It starts with everyday challenges like stress and sleep issues, which can cause either positive or negative impacts on one's health depending on personal experience. Moreover, he stated that mental health disorders are defined as conditions diagnosed by professionals, emphasizing that they differ from everyday emotional struggles, which are often over-diagnosed due to a lack of clear language and understanding. Mental health is a conversation that too many times people aren't willing to have. It's a real thing and even though people tend to ignore it, having those conversations, difficult though they are, is necessary. Contrary to popular belief, participants don't have to be adults to weigh in, give an opinion, and seek help because mental health also impacts youngsters, and not addressing their fears and concerns can have a lingering impact on their lives. ”I drink socially or occasionally, but what I really had to change was the environment around me.” – (Ross), 4:51 My guest today is Ross Szabo, a leading mental health advocate and a man who is working tirelessly to change the perceptions around mental health. His work includes how we approach it from a classroom dynamic as his vision calls for teachers, school districts, and leaders around the nation to begin building programs that address the very real phenomenon at an early age. He's a pioneer in this field and continues to champion the needs of children through his groundbreaking programs and curriculums. “If I knew what panic disorder was in the sixth grade it would've been a lot easier for me to come forward and talk about it.” – (Danny), 18:43 Today, Ross discusses the challenges he faced as a child growing up in Pennsylvania, how those challenges impacted his life as well as his stance on how our nation should address mental health moving forward. Ross also shares several real-life experiences including the things he has seen during speaking engagements and the way those engagements have shaped his way of thinking. “When it comes to students, everybody just wants to be seen and heard.” – (Ross), 27:38 If you've been wondering how to address the mental health issues of young people within your sphere, pull up a chair and listen to Ross as he shares the wisdom he's seen and learned along the way. This is an incredible conversation about a topic whose time has definitely come. “Mental health isn't just about emotions, it's also relationships, it's communication, it's coping mechanisms.” – (Ross), 37:47 In This Episode: (1:59) – Ross dives into how for years, he self-medicated heavily. “Are the kids okay?” Mental health in children and teens has been at the forefront of topics for concern, especially since the pandemic. Ross Szabo discusses the importance of mental health education in schools, and how we can normalize talking about it in our everyday conversations. This podcast is made possible by generous funding from BAE Systems, Inc. To learn more, visit https://www.baesystems.com/en-us/home. Audio mixing by Concentus Media, Inc., Temple, Texas. Show Notes: Resources: https://humanpowerproject.com/ About Ross Szabo Talking about emotions can be a challenge, but Ross's brutally honest, relatable and humorous approach puts audiences at ease as they confront a difficult topic. When Ross was a freshman in college, everything on the surface seemed to be fine. He was making friends, getting good grades and had a fun social life. However, no one could have imagined how many emotions he was suppressing. Ross was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 16, was hospitalized for attempting to take his own life during his senior year of high school, and like so many other freshman, just wanted to fit in. He tried to hide what he was feeling to convince everyone that everything was ok, but that can only last for so long. Ross's story resonates with the millions of college students who are putting on a happy face to hide their true emotions. Ross uses tasteful humor and insights to help participants understand common mental health conditions and individual differences. He also covers warning signs that students can look for in their friends and peers, as well as resources that can provide guidance in these sensitive situations. Ross is NOW the CEO of the Human Power Project. He is an award-winning mental health speaker, writer, trainer and Returned Peace Corps Volunteer. Ross has spoken to more than 1 million students about the importance of mental health and provided a positive example to empower them to seek help. He received the 2010 Didi Hirsch Removing the Stigma Leadership Award, 2012 Changing Minds Award and had his advocacy work entered into the Congressional Record. He is the co-author of Behind Happy Faces; Taking Charge of Your Mental Health and a blogger for The Huffington Post.

And what we're trying to do is tie that past history of physical literacy and mental literacy as a way to actually normalize conversations around mental health. 4:26 We need to start actually teaching that there are different categories for mental health challenges. One would be everyday challenges: stress, lack of sleep, body image issues, things like that. Those are things everyone experiences. Another category would be environmental factors. The next category would be significant events, so experiences with loss change, and rejection, and how that affects your lives. This is really critical in terms of normalizing mental health. Because most people are confusing these issues. But those aren't the same things. This is just one tool. Let's actually separate what you're experiencing so that you have a better vocabulary for it.6:20 - One of the most important things there is teaching kinds of sensitivity around what is a mental health disorder and what isn't. 6:25 - The conversations that are getting normalized now aren't actually beneficial. They're dismissive of people's experiences.8:06 - Mental health literacy and mental health education are different from social-emotional learning. 8:36 - Mental health literacy is important because the definition of mental health isn't having a problem. It's how you address challenges in your life.8:56 - Mental health should be taught the same way as physical health. What schools are mainly afraid of is becoming therapeutic centers. But there is a way to take a public health approach to mental health. 12:12 In the professional setting, put up boundaries and only share things you've processed. Give yourself the outlet so that you're not stuck to take things back or wish you didn't share some.13:27 - One of the most important things you can do as a parent is to model the behavior you want to see in your kids. The largest form of education will always be through example. It'll never be words.16:40 - It's natural for kids to have different things they like and have those things shift throughout adolescence. There's nothing wrong with that. But when it gets deeper than that, when you see that they're not able to do the things they used to do for a longer duration of time, that's when it's time to call someone in.18:05 - As you go through the early decades of your life, you spend so much time building and trying to find what works for you that it takes a while to get to a place where you can be more present and be in a place where you're connecting.Dear Mind, You Matter is brought to you by NOBU, new mental health, and wellness app. To download NOBU, visit the app store or Google Play. Ross Szabo has a powerful personal story that has fueled his mission to create resources to help people understand their own mental health. A pioneer, award winning educator, and book author, he is changing the way communities learn about mental health.

Mental health is important, talking about it is hard and that is exactly why my guest, Ross Szabo is consistently sought after as a go-to teacher on the topic. It was awesome having my friend in the diner and we kicked things off chatting about Pennsylvania diners and circus fries. We then took a classic James hard left and we talked about how Ross got into doing mental health work and the time he tried to take his life in high school. He told me about rebounding from bullying and being labeled from sharing his story. There were some of the role models who helped him early on that I loved hearing about. I then asked him why Physical Education is taught in schools but Mental Health Education is not. One of the reasons is because mental health is often approached from a reactive place, and that is something that needs to be changed. Ross told me some ways teachers can bring mental health work into the classroom. We then shifted focus to men and mental health – what happens in adolescence that needs to be undone later. I speak internationally to willing and unwilling attendees about authenticity, vulnerability, and leadership. My clients include American Express, General Electric (GE), Accenture, Yale University, The Ohio State University, and many others. As a speaker, I am doing the two things I loves the most: making people think and making people laugh! I host my own events multiple times a year. They are 2-day events called Living Imperfectly Live (and sometimes they are 1-day virtual events). They are a space where humans from every walk of life can come together to be part of a community on the pursuit of badassery. The goal is to help attendees start living the life we say we want to live. Alas, you're here because of an idea I had a number of years ago and didn't think I was good enough to pull it off. I finally acted on it and alas Diner Talks with James was born! As you can see from what I do in my professional life, Diner Talks is alligned with everything I believe in and teach. If this wasn't dry enough, and you would like to know more info about my speaking, events, or coaching feel free to check out my website: JamesTRobo.com. Let’s Be Friends on Social Media! But on the inside, he couldn’t hide behind his happy face anymore and at 17 he was hospitalized for attempting to take his own life. Ross is here today to talk about his inspirational journey of turning his pain into becoming a social innovator who pioneered the youth mental health movement. Ross is the Wellness Director at Geffen Academy at UCLA, an author, and an award-winning speaker who uses the power of his personal story to captivate his audience. "Someone who is stressed out needs mental health as much as someone who has bipolar disorder."There are few subjects as delicate as mental disorders and the best way to treat them.I'm guessing most of us tend to avoid the topic in general, we're pretty ignorant about what is involved.Until it affects us or someone we're close to it.That's why I was so interested in learning from today's guest.Ross Szabo is living proof that living with a mental disorder, in his case bipolar, does not have to define or isolate you.Through extreme mood swings, substance-abuse, denial, secrecy and erratic, sometimes harmful behavior and thoughts (as well as see his brother go through the same), Ross eventually found his way back to a dynamic peace with bipolar, and devoted his life to becoming a national advocate for better mental health education. His story is powerful and raw and he shares an honest look into what it's like to "feel the tentacles" of your disorder creeping up on you.We discuss his process of working through self-hatred as an adult after years of coping through alcohol abuse. He shares his viewpoint on the terminology we use around mental illness and we talk about the alarming trend in schools to cut programs like physical education and art (which are key in supporting mental health for kids).Fundamentally, Ross is about hope and education, building and sharing his curriculum with thousands of schools through his Human Power Project and speaking on the topic globally. Some questions I ask:Do you remember your first manic episode? What's the connection between anxiety and bipolar disorder? How did you get into the Peace Corps since you were exposing yourself to change, loss, and lack of sleep? What is it like to feel the tentacles of the disorder coming at you?How do you publicize a brand about mental disorders?Links we mention:The Human Power ProjectJoseph CampbellBehind Happy FacesScott HarrisonFollow Ross:Website | Twitter"I was a functional mess-up."
