Dr. Drew Ramsey is a pioneer in the emerging field of Nutritional Psychiatry and author of "Eat to Beat Depression and Anxiety: Nourish Your Way to Better Mental Health in Six Weeks." Dr. Ramsey reviews the remarkable research that has demonstrated the efficacy of diet for improving mental health outcomes. The foods we eat impact our brain function for better or for worse, delivering essential nutrients, fostering a healthy microbiome, combatting inflammation, encouraging neuroplasticity, and supporting neurotransmitters. He is co-developer of the Antidepressant Food Scale that rates foods based on their potential to support well-being. He is also director of the Brain Food Clinic, which offers integrative psychiatric care incorporating “dietary assessment and food prescription along with coaching, meal planning, and hands on skill building in your kitchen.” He believes that no single diet offers a panacea for mental health optimization, but that replacement of ultra-processed food with nutrient-dense alternatives offers the most benefits with ease of compliance.

How much can a change in diet influence symptoms of mental health disorders? Why are a diversity of plants and whole foods so important to include, and ultra processed foods so important to remove? Why are inflammation and microbe diversity in the gut so key to this question? What does this research mean for the life-style medicine movement and to world food policy? In this episode we have the exploding new field of nutritional psychiatry to get to grips with, that is the way our diet can influence and even treat mental health conditions. We're going to be discussing the historical separation of mind and body by science, which has led to scepticism that diet could influence mental health outcomes; the new understanding of the importance of diversity in our microbiome and inflammation to our mood and mental state; our main topic which is going to be the radical results of recent trials showing large changes in cognitive and mental health outcomes when diet is altered; we'll get into the foods that can bring about that change and why they work; and we're going to be getting into the reasons for the broken industrialised food environment that has contributed to the current mental health epidemic in the west.Fortunately, to understand this complex new field, our guest today is the very scientist that risked her reputation to conduct the first trials, facing considerable pushback, only to shift the consensus remarkably quickly with some top science, Felice Jacka. She is the Deakin University Distinguished Professor of Nutritional Psychiatry in Melbourne, the founder and director of the Food & Mood Centre, and of the International Society of Nutritional Psychiatry; She has been cited in over 100 institutional directives for food policy including the World Health Organization and UNICEF; and she is also the author of two books on this for the general public, the children's book “There's a Zoo in my Poo” and for adults “Brain Changer: How diet can save your mental health” which we'll be covering today. Her impact has been so high on public health that in 2021 she was awarded the Order of Australia for her services to nutritional psychiatry. What we discuss:00:00 Intro08:50 The historic separation between mental and physical health. 10:35 People with mental health die about 20 years earlier. 13:30 The connection between the immune system and mental health. 16:20 New microbiome & chronic inflammation research's influence on psychiatry. 20:00 Epigenetics, mitochondria (energy generation) & neurotransmitter influences. 21:15 Gut brain axis & oxidative stress response.33:30 The SMILES trial results and their integration into the consensus. 38:30 Using the Press to shorten the usual 20 year gap between results and policy change. 43:00 Industrialised food is the leading cause of chronic disease & biodiversity loss. 45:00 ‘We're not going to tell people what to eat': the food lobby's ‘nanny state' argument. 50:00 Soil depletion and the soil microbiome. 50:50 The life-style psychiatry movement: Diet, sleep and exercise. 01:05:30 Take out ultra-processed foods - even the nutritionally balanced ones. 01:12:30 Cognitive ability and memory reduced by processed foods. 01:14:45 Nutritional and energetic equivalent foods have totally different outcomes for the microbiome. 01:19:15 Put in a variety of plants - 30 a week. 01:20:20 The mediterranean diet. 01:24:50 Polyphenol science so far. 01:27:00 Emulsifiers and artificial sugars - the mucosal lining of the gut. 01:30:15 Fermented foods - the waste products of the bacteria are beneficial. ADHD is the most searched topic on ChildNEXUS, and our episodes on ADHD are among the most downloaded. It's clear that parents and caregivers are eager to learn about different options to support their children, and this episode is packed with useful information. Sara specializes in how diet can impact mood and behavior, and she offers practical advice on where to begin. She suggests some starting points, but acknowledges that making dietary changes can feel overwhelming, so she shares helpful tips for parents on how to start small and build from there. Throughout the episode, Sara discusses the common challenges faced by children with ADHD and the supplements that can help. While she emphasizes that nutrition isn't a “cure” for a problem, it is an important piece of the puzzle. Sara also highlights the strong connection between the gut and brain and how addressing this can benefit not only ADHD symptoms but overall well-being. If you're looking for new ways to support your child or simply curious about how integrative approaches can complement traditional treatments, you won't want to miss this episode!   Show Notes: [3:16] - Sara specializes in Nutritional Psychiatry, which is about how diet can impact mood and behavior. [5:16] - One good starting place that Sara recommends is to start integrating probiotics. [6:28] - Supplements are commonly asked about by parents of children with ADHD and there are several that could benefit as an addition to a vitamin rich diet. [9:17] - A lot of time, we cannot get the full nutritional benefit from the food we eat due to different factors. [10:43] - It can be very overwhelming to parents to make dietary changes. Sara gives some tips on where to start. [12:30] - Generally, children with ADHD have trouble falling asleep. There are supplements that can help with this as well. [13:53] - Nutrition is part of a puzzle. It isn't a “cure”. [17:18] - Working with a mental health professional or pediatrician can help guide a parent in choosing the right things for their child. [18:40] - There is a connection between the gut and the brain. [22:31] - It is tricky for many parents to make dietary changes due to the pickiness of their child as an eater and their need for quick dopamine through snacking. [23:47] - Some parents are seeking something different from medication. [25:59] - This integrative approach benefits more than ADHD symptoms.   About Our Guest: Sara Langley is a dedicated Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who specializes in treating children and adolescents with brain-based medical conditions. Welcome back to Superhumanize, where we explore the frontier of what it means to truly thrive in body, mind, and spirit. Today, I'm excited to be joined by someone who stands at the intersection of cutting-edge science and practical wellness—Dr. John Lewis.Dr. Lewis is a pioneer in the field of nutritional psychiatry and cognitive health. His groundbreaking work has expanded our understanding of how nutrition impacts the brain and has also led to tangible solutions that are transforming lives. Most notably, Dr. Lewis conducted a landmark clinical study on Alzheimer's disease, where his innovative use of an aloe polysaccharide multi-nutrient complex led to clinically significant improvements in cognitive function, reduced inflammation, and enhanced immune responses in patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer's. This study has opened new avenues for potentially reversing the cognitive decline associated with this devastating disease. In this episode, we'll explore the very mechanisms by which the food we eat can enhance cognitive function, support immune health, and even modulate inflammation—a root cause of so many chronic conditions. We'll go into the fascinating world of plant-based nutrients and their role in detoxification, heavy metal chelation, and adult stem cell production.Beyond the science, what truly sets Dr. Lewis apart is his commitment to applying this knowledge in ways that are both accessible and deeply impactful. Whether you're a health practitioner, a biohacker, or someone simply looking to optimize your mental clarity and longevity, this conversation will deliver insights that could very well change the way you think about food and health. In my conversation with Dr. Lewis, you'll discover:00:22 Meet Dr. John Lewis: Pioneer in Nutritional Psychiatry01:15 The Impact of Nutrition on Brain Health02:03 Personal Stories and the Importance of Brain Health03:57 Vitamin D: The Essential Nutrient07:18 Understanding Polysaccharides and Their Benefits10:08 Groundbreaking Alzheimer's Study13:19 Clinical Trials and Real-Life Impact20:52 Focus on Multiple Sclerosis28:35 Immune Function and Brain Health29:39 Nutritional Paradigm vs. Pharmacological Paradigm30:13 Polysaccharides and Their Benefits31:20 Personal Testimonials and Success Stories33:20 Introduction to Aloe Vera and Rice Bran37:10 Clinical Trials and Research45:42 Challenges in Academia and Business51:38 Future Plans and Innovations53:32 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsResources mentioned:Dr. Lewis' websiteGuest's social handles:InstagramYouTubeFacebookP.S. How can neuroscience help us personalise mental health diagnoses and treatments? How are mental heath stats changing and why? How effective are life style changes as a prevention? What other new treatments are proving promising and effective? In this episode we're going to get an update on all the recent research from neuroscience that's studying mental health, and not just the issues and the treatments being used to deal with them, but also the importance of the brain itself in the perception of our mental health, and the lifestyle choices that can preventatively ward off the issues before they arise; things like nutrition, sleep, exercise, and social contact. We'll be looking at the big one: depression and its connection to inflammation, and a wide range of buzz therapies including psychedelic therapy and cold water immersion. Today's guest has just written a book for the public on this topic “The Balanced Brain: The science of mental health”, and her lab at MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences in Cambridge bridges the gap between the nuts and bolts of cognitive neuroscience and the more mind base of clinical psychology. She is neuroscientist and author Camilla Nord. In 2022, she was named a Rising Star by the US Association for Psychological Science, and received the Young Investigator Award from the European Society for Affective and Cognitive Science.   Now it strikes me that if we can integrate new evidence from brain research into the clinical psychology field, we‘ve got a much better shot at treating ever rising numbers of mental health diagnoses and perhaps educating a good portion of the next generation enough to avoid these issues all together. It may be a pipe dream but we've got to try. What we discuss:  00:00 Intro 07:00 Our perception of pain. 11:00 Body changes lead to mental health changes. 12:00 Our ‘Inside-out' perception is an active predictor of our mental health and the outside world. 16:00 The importance of narrative repetition to our self-perception. 18:00 Individualised data and solutions to mental health are impractical for our one-size-fits-all medical systems on a budget. 23:30 Nutritional Psychiatry - the connection between diet and mental health. 26:30 Gut-brain axis importance. 28:00 The risk of dieting affecting pleasure centres and thus motivation and mental health. 30:00 Inflammatory diet choices and lifestyle leading to depression. 33:30 Microbiome research: promise vs wishful thinking. 37:45 Social connection, nature connection and connection to meaning. 40:45 Some mental health symptoms can be useful and adaptive. 43:20 Sport and physical exercise to improve mental health. 46:00 Depression leads to a lack of drive to obtain pleasure - Anhedonia. 48:20 Sleep neuroscience. 53:30 Anger management and ‘hangriness'. 56:20 The Placebo effect is a useful part of a treatment's effect. 58:00 Changing diagnosis rates in mental health. 01:02:00 Psychedelic therapy was unpopular before the last 10 years of study. 01:06:00 MDMA's uses for PTSD, and modifying beliefs and expectations. 01:08:10 Connection between psychosis and cannabis. 01:09:20 Cannabis CBD Oil treatment of THC addiction. 01:11:15 Cold water immersion for euphoria and pain tolerance. 01:13:00 The changing nature of mental health. This episode is brought to you by HVMN. it's important to understand that our capacity, our mental health, our physical health, these are all driven by energy and having energy allotted, energy available to literally think the thoughts that we want to think, to be able to have more self-control and self-management of our minds, of our thoughts. We can get depleted very quickly, you know, especially in today's society. Again there's so much coming at us. And so having some supportive nutrition is obviously critical. And right now with innovation there are some things that are kind of head and shoulders above other things when it comes to energy, and in particular numerous studies, including a study published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, AKA the FASEB journal, have found that exogenous ketones can be up to twenty-eight-percent more efficient in generating energy than glucose alone. Plus studies have found up to a 15% increased mean power output After recovery when utilizing ketones, helping our bodies to heal and to recover. There's something really special about these exogenous ketones, but we've taken a mighty jump from the conventional ketone esters. When we now are able to utilize ketone IQ, go to hvmn.com/model and get your hands on ketone IQ. I've personally experienced ketone IQ improving my cognitive performance and Specifically my endurance during my workouts. And for most people, this isn't gonna be for everybody, but for most people they notice this the very first time utilizing ketone IQ. I know that I did. And you know, of course over the years, I've been in this field for about 21 years now, and I've utilized so many different things. It's very rare to find something where you see a noticeable improvement immediately and that's what I experienced. Again this is not necessarily gonna happen for everyone, but for the majority of people utilizing ketone IQ, this takes their energy to another level. But here's the key, without any strange jitters or crashes or anything like that. It's just utilizing a primal energy system in our bodies for performance. So check them out. Go to hvmn.com/model and you're going to get hooked up with 30% off your first subscription order automatically. All right. So again, that's hvmn.com. And get your hands on ketone IQ. This episode is brought to you by LMNT. Neuroplasticity, the ability of the human brain to grow and adapt and evolve and really to unlock our superhuman capacity is driven by our experiences, our practices, our activities, but also our nutrition. Fascinating new research published in the journal Neuron found that magnesium, this key electrolyte, is able to restore critical brain plasticity and improve overall cognitive function. Again, neuroplasticity is the ability of our brain to change and adapt. Now this is one key electrolyte, but it works in tandem with other electrolytes like sodium. Sodium is critical for maintaining proper hydration of the human brain. If you didn't know this, the human brain is primarily made of water. We're talking somewhere in the ballpark of 75%, upwards of 80% water. It's so important because just a small decrease in our body's optimal hydration level, what's noted in the data, just a 2% decrease in our baseline hydration level can lead to dramatic cognitive decline. Helping to sustain and maintain proper hydration levels in the brain, sodium is critical in that. And also, researchers at McGill University found that sodium functions as a quote, off-on switch for specific neurotransmitters that support our cognitive function and protect our brains from numerous degenerative diseases. Right now, the number one electrolyte company in the world is delivering a gift for new and returning customers. With each purchase of LMNT, that's LMNT, the number one electrolyte in the market, no binders, no fillers, no artificial ingredients, no crazy sugar and sweeteners. My friend's son was just over at our house and my son, my oldest son Jordan, was training them, taking his teammates through some workouts and we opened the freezer and there's a bottle of Gatorade. There's a bottle of Gatorade in our freezer. And my wife's like, who's this? Cause we know we don't roll like that. We don't mess with the Gators, all right? We don't mess with the Gatorades. And we knew who it was, it was one of his friends. And he came in, he's like, well, at least this is the no sugar kind. And then I go through some of the ingredients with him and I find those curve balls of like, here's where they're sneaking in these artificial ingredients and things that the human body has no association with. But you know, he's taking a step in the right direction by being in our environment. So you know what I did? I put the LMNT in his hand. All right, make sure that he's got the good stuff, the very best stuff. And also this is backed by peer reviewed data and a huge body of evidence.
