In this episode, Robin Carhart-Harris, PhD joins to elucidate the intersection of psychedelics and neuroplasticity. Dr. Carhart-Harris is the Ralph Metzner Distinguished Professor in Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco. Robin founded the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London in April 2019, was ranked among the top 31 medical scientists in 2020, and in 2021, was named in TIME magazine's ‘100 Next' – a list of 100 rising stars shaping the future. Dr. Carhart-Harris begins by discussing the impact of psychedelics on neuroplasticity and mental health. He explains neuroplasticity as the brain's ability to change, emphasizing its role in mood disorders and substance use and describes how stress atrophies the brain, leading to mental illness. Dr. Carhart-Harris differentiates between neuroplasticity and neurogenesis, noting that while neurogenesis is limited in adults, neuroplasticity can be influenced by psychedelics like ketamine, psilocybin, and MDMA. In closing, he also discusses the entropic brain hypothesis, suggesting that increased brain entropy leads to richer subjective experiences. In this episode, you'll hear: The relationship between neuroplasticity and “canalization” Why homeostatic neuroplasticity may promote mental wellbeing Differences between ketamine, MDMA, and serotonergic psychedelics in terms of neuroplasticity The details of the entropic brain hypothesis Psychedelics' effect on the default mode network The frontiers of research into psychedelics and neuroplasticity Quotes: “So changeability is what plasticity is. And neuroplasticity—that's the ability of the brain to change. Okay, and how is neuroplasticity related to mood disorders like depression and anxiety or substance use disorder or something like that? Well, that's a great question cause we don't have it entirely nailed down. But one of the most reliable findings in biological psychiatry is that stress atrophies the brain.” [2:47] “The main thing with ketamine is that the window of increased plasticity is brief… That makes sense because that reflects how ketamine seems to work therapeutically—that it provides relief somewhat short-term, unless it is twinned with, say, psychotherapy or you do repeat administration and get someone out of the rut they were in.” [22:15] “We've seen in people with depression, brain networks can become quite segregated from each other—they are ordinarily, they're quite functionally separate and distinct—but that modularity might be a bit elevated in depression. But what we've seen with psilocybin therapy is that separateness between systems, that segregated quality of organization of brain networks, brain systems actually decreases after psilocybin therapy for depression. I'll put it another way: the brain looks more globally interconnected after psilocybin therapy for depression and the magnitude of that… correlates with improvements.” [39:19] Links: Carhart-Harris Lab website Dr. Carhart-Harris on X Dr. Carhart-Harris' 2025 article: “Neuroplasticity and psychedelics: A comprehensive examination of classic and non-classic compounds in pre and clinical models” Dr. Carhart-Harris' 2012 article: “Neural correlates of the psychedelic state as determined by fMRI studies with psilocybin” Dr. Carhart-Harris' 2010 article with Karl Friston: “The default-mode, ego-functions and free-energy: a neurobiological account of Freudian ideas” Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui

We are excited to host David Luke, for an episode on the Mangu.tv podcast series. Dr David Luke is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Greenwich where he has been teaching an undergraduate course on the Psychology of Exceptional Human Experience since 2009, and he is also Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Psychedelic Research, Imperial College. His research focuses on transpersonal experiences, anomalous phenomena and altered states of consciousness, especially via psychedelics, having published more than 100 academic papers in this area, including thirteen books, most recently: Breaking Convention: A Seismic Shift in Psychedelia (2022) and DMT Entity Encounters (2021. When he is not running clinical drug trials with LSD, doing DMT field experiments or observing apparent weather control with Mexican shamans, he directs the Ecology, Cosmos and Consciousness salon. He is a co-founder and trustee of Breaking Convention: International Conference on Psychedelic Consciousness. He has given over 400 invited public lectures and conference presentations; won teaching, research and writing awards; organised numerous festivals, conferences, symposia, seminars, retreats, expeditions, pagan cabarets and pilgrimages; and has studied techniques of consciousness alteration from South America to India, from the perspective of scientists, shamans and Shivaites. He lives life on the edge of Sussex. David speaks about his upbringing, experimenting with psychedelics, shamanism, parapsychology, entheobotany, and his PhD thesis on the psychology of luck. Giancarlo and David discuss synchronicities, the double-slit experiment and the power of thought.
In this episode, David interviews Floris Wolswijk: senior project manager at Delphi; co-founder of FLO coaching; and founder of Blossom, an online informational hub collecting psychedelic courses, trials, companies, and over 2000 categorized research articles. When Wolswijk began Blossom, he was barely able to fill a weekly newsletter, and now he's adding a new study nearly every day, perfectly illustrating the exponential growth in psychedelic research. He talks about why so much research is happening (and why more isn't), the trends he's seen, the benefit in research changing people's minds, and what he hopes for in the future. What can the research community learn from existing real world evidence, and how can retreat centers and underground communities contribute? He also discusses: What culture is like in the Netherlands, where psilocybin truffles are legal Drug development and the possibilities of adjusting existing molecules What we can learn from the Lykos and FDA situation The economics of psychedelics and how insurance will likely be the next big conversation His work with FLO coaching, and how coaching, acceptance and commitment therapy, and psilocybin can work together and more! Tara stumbled into her experience with Psilocybin, while on a self healing journey in Tulum, Mexico. As a former Paramedic who has suffered with PTSD, anxiety and some depression, she didn't even know how deep her pain was, until she had her first full dose of Psilocybin. Her experience left her with a deep sense of self and a feeling of peace that she had never experienced before. Working in Emergency services for 9 years, she saw an increasing rise in mental health and human suffering, as people become prisoners of their own minds and we enter into a “mental health crises”. She started working with this medicine under the guidance of a mushroom healer and began helping others through their own journeys to healing. She studied Psychology and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Calgary and then went on to train in Paramedicine, holding a A-EMCA, license as a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP), practising for nine years. In addition, she holds a credentials as a Certified Natural Health Professional (CNHP), Certified Holistic Nutritionist (CHN) and as a Clinical Hypnotist (CHt), training under renowned psychotherapist, Debbie Papadakis. Welcome back to The Trip Report Podcast, a production of Beckley Waves.Today's conversation is with Shamil Chandaria, and as I alluded to in last week's newsletter introducing computational neuroscience—it is the longest and most technical conversation we've had to date.I have wanted to speak with Shamil since I watched his lecture at Oxford titled The Bayesian Brain and Meditation.Shamil is a former advisor to Google DeepMind, co-foudner and research fellow at Imperial College London Centre for Psychedelic Research and Oxford University's Centre for Eudaimonia and Human Flourishing, and a co-author with Robin Carhart-Harris and the Imperial team of the influential 2023 paper titled Canalization and Plasticity in Psychopathology, Importantly for this conversation, Shamil is also a longtime meditation practitioner, and his current work is dedicated to exploring contemplative practices, spiritual awakening, and psychedelics through the lens of computational neuroscience. At the heart of the conversation is the Free Energy Principle, a relatively new concept in cognitive neuroscience that conceives of the brain as a prediction machine constantly updating its internal models to minimize prediction errors. This framework along with the Bayesian Brain Hypothesis show how the brain optimally processes sensory data through inference, which has profound implications for how we perceive and experience the world. We discuss:* The brain as a prediction machine* The convergence of ancient wisdom and modern neuroscience.* Defining human flourishing beyond the absence of suffering to include meaning, love, joy, connection, and psychological resilience.* The role of body sensations, emotions, and somatic practices in psychotherapy and how they tie into the brain's predictive coding mechanisms.* Spiritual awakening, liberation and human flourishing through a neurocomputational lens* The potential for integrating free energy principle-based models into the field of psychiatry, improving therapeutic approaches and mental health care.* And much moreMy takeaway from this conversation is that we are, in fact, in the midst of a paradigm shift—one that bridges the fields of meditation, psychology, psychedelics, phenomenology, psychiatry, and even artificial intelligence. This new understanding, grounded in the free energy principle, offers a unified theory that links ancient wisdom with modern neuroscience, reshaping how we think about consciousness, well-being, and what it means to be sentient. And now, I bring you my conversation with Shamil Chandaria.I want to highlight our friends at the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation (TBD), who have just announced their latest Request for Proposals for scientific studies of the Perception Box.Tiny Blue Dot Foundation strives to help people understand that they live in their own unique Perception Box whose walls can be expanded to minimize suffering, increase acceptance of self and others, and view trauma and other challenges as opportunities for growth.TBD has allocated $9,000,000 to fund up to 10 rigorous research projects related to The Science of the Perception Box. TBD ran similar RFPs over the last two years and funded a total of 23 projects thus far. Information about these projects can be found here and here.Listen to the episode on Substack, Spotify, Google or Apple.Credits:* Hosted by Zach Haigney * Produced by Zach Haigney, Erin Greenhouse, and Katelin Jabbari* Find us at thetripreport.com* Follow us on Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTubeTheme music by MANCHO Sounds, Mixed and Mastered by Rollin Weary This is a public episode. In this week's episode, we welcome Dr. Shamil Chandaria, a philanthropist, entrepreneur, technologist, and academic with interdisciplinary research interests spanning computational neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and the philosophy and science of human wellbeing. His PhD from the London School of Economics focused on the mathematical modeling of economic systems, and he later earned an MA in philosophy from University College London. Here, he developed an interest in the philosophy of science and explored philosophical issues in biology, neuroscience, and ethics. In 2018, Shamil contributed to founding the Global Priorities Institute at Oxford University—an interdisciplinary research center addressing humanity's most pressing issues. The following year, he co-founded the Centre for Psychedelic Research in the Department of Brain Sciences at Imperial College London, which investigates psychedelic therapies for conditions like treatment-resistant depression. He has also supported research on the neuroscience of meditation at Harvard and the University of California, Berkeley. Shamil is not only a brilliant mind but also a person with a great, open heart, whose smile and enthusiasm are infectious. In our conversation, we discuss the intersections between spirituality, meditative practices, and neuroscience—how the latest brain science connects spiritual experiences with emerging understanding in the field. Shamil introduces the ‘free energy' approach—a paradigm developed over the last 15 years in neuroscience, also known as predictive processing or active inference. We look into questions such as: Why does conscious experience exist at all? What is the brain's goal in experiencing? How do neurotransmitters function? What role does the self play? Why do we get to act as we do? How does this model interact with the tantric view of reality? And many more topics. Welcome to the Interdisciplinary Conference on Psychedelic Research! #ICPR24 In this episode of Psychedelic Conversations, I sit down with Cody Wenthur, an assistant professor from the University of Wisconsin's School of Pharmacy. Recorded at the ICPR 24 conference in Haarlem, Netherlands, we delve into Cody's motivations for entering the psychedelic research field, driven by his fascination with how small molecules can significantly alter human behavior. We explore the unique master's program at his school, which focuses on psychoactive pharmaceutical investigation, preparing students to navigate the regulatory process for brain-active molecules. Cody shares insights from the conference, discusses regulatory developments in Europe, and highlights the importance of education in advancing the field of psychedelic studies. Join us for an enlightening discussion on the intersections of science, education, and psychedelics. About Cody: From his earliest days in the laboratory, he's been particularly interested in questions that give a better picture of how the brain turns external stimuli into lasting decisions and driven by the vision of using the answers to try to improve human mental health. Cody honed this translational ethos during his training at Purdue, Vanderbilt, and Scripps, which included clinical work in inpatient psychiatric units, mechanistically novel academic drug discovery efforts, and the search for biomarkers of response to vaccines directed against abusable psychoactive substances. Cody is directing a group of talented, curious individuals from both clinical and basic science backgrounds, and he is relishing the unexpected insights and challenges that arise as he works through forward-looking problems at the interface of chemistry, neuroscience, physiology, and pharmacology. Whether through development of vaccines directed against synthetic psychoactive drugs, pharmacologic dissection of rapidly acting antidepressant activity, or manipulation of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy context, current projects in his lab ultimately focus on maximizing the benefits and minimizing the harms arising from chemically induced mechanisms of long-term behavioral change. In this episode, special guest host Court Wing interviews Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez, MD: professor and chair of rehabilitation medicine at UT Health San Antonio; Joel Castellanos, MD: co-founder and associate medical director of the Center for Psychedelic Research at UC San Diego; and MaryAnn Welke Lesage: a long COVID survivor who reports experiencing drastic improvement in symptoms after MDMA and psilocybin therapy. As the world slowly recovers from COVID, many people are seeing continued or new symptoms, and while much is still not understood, these symptoms are being categorized as long COVID: essentially a persistent viral inflammation causing brain fog, headaches, depression, and other hard-to-diagnose symptoms. With estimations of as many as 18% of people in the U.S. experiencing this at one point and 6.8% currently dealing with it, could psychedelics – which can decrease inflammation and reset neural networks – help alleviate these symptoms? They discuss: How long COVID fits into what we already know about psychedelics, pain, and inflammatory medicine Why MDMA or psilocybin therapy, specifically, can help The importance of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) and the myriad of tools these physicians have learned to work with Why anecdotal evidence matters towards future research and more! One could argue that psychedelic research has experienced a similar journey as crypto, in the sense that decentralised communities bound together to fund research where centralised entities refuse to do so. One of the greatest hurdles in modern science is access to research funding, and DeSci aims to provide a solution through decentralised crowdfunding. In addition, IP rights are incontestably attributed with the help of blockchain technology, as they cannot be altered at a later date. However, as the human mind is unique and moulded by each individual's life story, establishing a causal relationship between consumption and their beneficial or detrimental effects can be extremely biased. We were joined by Dima Buterin & Paul Kohlhaas, to discuss the vast subject of psychedelics (especially in relationship to trauma), how research has progressed and how decentralisation pushes the field forward (DeSci).Topics covered in this episode:Dima's & Paul's backgroundsDiscovering psychedelicsDealing with traumaPsychedelics throughout history and societiesHow Molecule DAO was foundedDeSci & on-chain IPEthereum early days, causality & rationalityPsyDAONetwork statesMiscEpisode links:Dima Buterin on TwitterPaul Kohlhaas on TwitterMolecule DAO on TwitterPsy DAO on TwitterSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. In this episode of the Psychedelic Medicine Podcast Tommaso Barba joins to explore the topic of psychedelics for sexual functioning and intimacy. Tommaso is a PhD candidate at the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London where his research is focused on understanding the potential role of psychedelic drugs for well-being. Tommaso authored the first paper on the effects of psychedelics on sexual functioning. In this conversation, Tommaso shares results from the multiple studies into psychedelics and sexual functions he has been involved in. He reports that in both a trial comparing psilocybin and escitalopram and a survey of naturalistic psychedelic use, respondents reported positive impacts on sexual functioning following psychedelic experiences. He also speculates about aspects of the psychedelic experience that are interpreted as “erotic” in the midst of the altered state and the reported shifts to experiencing sexual connection as more “spiritual” following psychedelic experiences. In closing, Tommaso discusses the promise of psychedelic journeys for healthy couples and the difficulties of researching this topic since there is no clear pathology being addressed. In this episode you'll hear: How Tommaso got interested in the intersection of psychedelics and sexual functioning Why SRRIs often have side effects of inhibiting sexual function How psychedelic neuropharmacology may help explain improved sexual functioning following psychedelic experiences The upcoming studies exploring the effects of psychedelic journeys on couples who undergo the experience together The possible differences between MDMA and classic psychedelics in terms of mechanism and impact when it comes to effects on sexual function Quotes: “When we looked at the positive affect symptoms—like wellbeing, connectedness, ability to feel emotions, and so on… Psilocybin outperformed escitalopram. And given so, we were really curious to investigate further the sex lives of these patients, because an active sex life is a key component of people's wellbeing, and a very overlooked one.” [7:34] “What we found was that people treated with psilocybin reported improvements in sexual pleasure, in capacity to communicate sexual desires with their partner, in sexual arousal, sexual satisfaction, and similar components of sexual functioning, while people treated with escitalopram did not report any of these changes and tended to report deterioration in this aspect of functioning.” [11:10] “[These psychedelic treatments may] work because it disentangles couples and its capable of individuating the two patients into the context of their relationship so that they start to develop a better identity in the context of the relationship instead of being completely fused into each other and not capable of really developing themselves and communicating their desires and what they want.” [31:15] Links: Tommaso on Twitter Tommaso on LinkedIn Imperial College Centre for Psychedelic Research online survey study: psychedelics and couples Previous episode: Microdosing and the Placebo Effect with Balázs Szigeti, PhD Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui
