A simple podcast committed to removing the stigma behind mental health. Here Kavin has guests of professionals, people with personal experience and solo episodes finding a path to acceptance, self love and mental and physical health.
mental health, understand, around, thanks, amazing, kavin.
Listeners of In My Head that love the show mention:I'm trying the Carnivore diet which goes against everything I've believed about diet and health my whole life. I used to see videos on the Carnivore diet and I'd immediately either turn it off or just think they were idiots. Now I'm here with 10+ yrs of chronic pain, anxiety, depression having tried multiple diets which put me right here. I figured, what better way to see if this works for me then running a very strict test on myself. So here's the gist of it: ***Only organic grass fed meats, range free chicken/turkey, bone broth and LOTS OF WATER. Pairing this with 16:8 intermittent fasting (11am - 7pm eating window). No caffeine, no alcohol, no carbs, no dairy, no sugars, no veggies no processed foods. Daily exercise at least 30min / 8hrs sleep This isn't to lose weight. This is simply to see how my mind and body respond to this. These are the main issues of mine that I want to track if this diet effects them at all. Anxiety / depression / Overall Mood Migraines Throat issues (Globus sensation/lump in throat) Congestion Body and joint pain tingling Neuropathy sensations Sciatica Ringing in ears I completely understand if this is just downright offensive to some of you but hopefully you'll watch the video and see why I've come to this decision to try the Carnivore diet. Here's to good physical and mental health that I wish for all of you.
I’ve decided to hit pause on our podcast, social media and Patreon for 3-6 months. I said from the beginning my goal is to create a place for open discussions on mental health and that I wanted to consistently put out quality audio, video and more than anything discussions and resources. That has gotten harder and harder over the past 9 months with COVID etc. I feel it’s most fair to our listeners that we take a pause, restructure some things and find a way to put out consistent weekly podcasts for you all. I believe in doing things 100%, and that’s just not possible for me right now with so much going on. * I want to thank you all for being a part of this community and I hope I’ve been able to share some content that has been beneficial for you. The podcast will remain available on YouTube and all podcast platforms but I just need to step away from it for a time to re-group, take a breather and come back at a better time. * Thank you to all of you for listening and we’ll be back soon.
In this episode Kavin discusses a whole host of tools to prevent and/or reduce the number of migraines you're having. Like most things, finding the source to your mental illness, migraines, chronic pain vs just treating the symptoms is always a better approach. We're lucky that we have medication as a tool to help us get to a place that we can do the necessary deeper work, but it shouldn't be looked at as the only solution to our issues. Kavin also shares a stretching and deep breathing program that he purchased years ago. This is one I've wanted to do since I started the podcast. Social Media is an interesting subject to study as it's still so new to humanity. But one thing is clear that while so many great things have come from social media, a lot of negative effects have been detrimental for peoples' mental health. There is a clear increase in depression, anxiety and suicide with the invention of the iPhone in 2007. Social Media was suppose to connect us to people and while it does that in so many great ways, it also ironically disconnects us with people. It's not a coincidence that a lot of the heads of these social media giants refuse to let their own children have social media accounts. This episode isn't about everyone getting off (while that might be necessary for some), it's more about learning how to have a healthy relationship with it. For some social media is about growing businesses and making new connections in industry, for others it's about honing in on a talent of theirs and sharing it with the world, yet for many it's a place they go that makes them feel bullied, less than, terrible parents, spouses or that they're worthless. Social media has caused problems with my mental health in the past as I had an unhealthy habit of comparing myself to other people. I took over a year off completely disconnected from it and it was fantastic, but also hard when trying to run businesses. I did a complete overhaul and found ways to make it a place that makes me laugh, grow business and strive to put out positivity. If we're going to social media to troll, degrade, constantly debate and shame people with different ideas than you, then it's probably time to take a break from it. It can be a very positive thing for you as you use it mindfully. How to support our podcast: YouTube: Like/Subscribe Patreon: Patreon.com/inmyheadpodcast . I enjoyed sitting down with Chad Brown who's a practicing life coach. We talked all about men's mental health. There are so many topics within mental health and this one in particular is so important because the statistics show that men die by suicide 3 to 4 times more than women. Something is going on where men don't feel like they can open up when they're struggling. In this episode we cover a lot on the stereotypes about male masculinity and the unproductive ways that men see themselves as people that can't ever show their vulnerabilities Chad and his partner Drew Renner have started a retreat endeavor called "Epic Man Trips". They go on a trip with a group of men which often involves mountain biking, dirt bike riding, climbing etc. They're usually staying in a cabin in a remote spot and dig into what is stopping men from being their best selves as individuals, husbands, dads, employees etc. They've reported lots of success stories from these men that feel stuck in their lives and are able to meet in a group to understand they aren't alone and talk about the tools to break out of those unhelpful ways of thinking. I had such a great time chatting with Alexia! She runs an awesome Instagram account called Not So Secret Diary of Anxiety. She shares education on mental health, tips when you’re feeling anxious or having a panic attack, tips on anxiety prevention and much more. I’ve enjoyed learning from her page and was inspired by her story. Alexia has dealt with anxiety most of her life and is using social media for something positive! Hope you like this episode! I love doing challenges that really push me out of my comfort zone. Caffeine and sugar are two of my biggest weaknesses that I crave and love and often have a hard time using them in moderation. So every year or so, I'll get off of it and I see enormous benefits. Starting Oct 15, 2020 I'm doing 30 days and would love for you to join me. If you're like me, when you get off caffeine and sugar there are bad withdrawal symptoms that come with it like fatigue, headaches/migraines, irritability, severe cravings etc. I'm going to try various things along the way to lower the intensity of all that like drinking plenty of water, drinking celery juice every morning, coconut water, eating plenty of food especially whole foods, getting plenty of sleep and more. Always good to try something hard for yourself that pushes you so we'll see how it goes. What started as Sharesa messaging me on Instagram turned into inviting her to do an episode on the podcast. I'm really inspired by her strength through dealing with mental illness most of her life and then living in a marriage with mental and emotional abuse for years. We discuss how she dealt with not only anxiety and suicidal ideation but living in a toxic marriage and being a parent. While there are really sad parts to Sharesa's story, I view it as a hero story as she's been able to move on as well as find strength in her journey. I was really inspired listening how she developed the necessary tools to take control of her mental health, find a supportive partner, and continue to be a positive light in her daughter's life. My wife joined me for the first time on the podcast and we talked all about dealing with mental illness in our marriage. I shared from my perspective as the one who deals with anxiety, depression and OCD and she shared from the perspective of not having it and being married to someone who does. We share tips on communication, getting out of the house, letting each other thrive together and independently of each other. We talked supporting each others goals, therapy and trying to understand each others differences and needs. To any of you dealing with this mental illness in a relationship, I really hope our perspective helps you. We don't claim to know everything, just that we've dealt with it for almost 12yrs together and we've come along way. It's worth the work. We're really wanting to grow the podcast and YouTube channel. In order to do that we need a bit of help from our awesome listeners. We're now on Patreon which is a monthly donation website. We've decided to go this route to avoid having our listeners listening to paid advertisements throughout the podcast episodes. A lot of work and time goes into each episode with finding and scheduling a guest, research, filming/recording, editing, uploading and posting to social media, not to mention the costs of running the website and domain fees as well as podcasting equipment. Up to this point, I've covered that all myself but as time goes on it gets harder to put out an episode every week. Your donations will help us be able to greatly streamline this process by purchasing equipment as well as hiring some help. 100% of your donation will go to the production of the podcast and YouTube channel. Just go to www.patreon.com/inmyheadpodcast and you can donate as little as $1/month. Thank you so much for your support. I've been so grateful for all your support and the important conversations we've been able to have to remove the stigma of mental illness. With your help we'll be able to extend the reach and provide more resources to those in need and education for those wanting to help their loved ones. Thanks so much!
Kavin chats with Evan Stowers about managing work, lifestyle, family life and many more things when also dealing with mental illness. Evan is a hairstylist and owns his own business. We had a candid and off the cuff conversation (without notes this time) to just get real about life and mental illness. We found plenty of things to laugh about and get side tracked with along the way. We appreciate all of you for checking out our podcast. Please subscribe and give us a five star rating. I had a great time chatting with Chris Voag for this episode! Chris is a cancer survivor who found great benefits of supplementing medical cannabis throughout his cancer treatments and after. He shares how helpful it was with his pain and nausea and overall outlook on life. Chris shares great experiences of people finding great benefits of cannabis including his father who survived stage 4 oral cancer. Chris was led to start his own company called Sir and Lady Cannabis Apparel. Founded in 2016. They provide quality clothing, but also a platform for other Cannabis Warriors such as himself to tell the world of how Cannabis gave them a better quality of life when all else failed. Through this venture he's bringing to light so many beautiful stories of people healing. You can email Chris directly Chris@SirCannabisApparel.com or DM us Via Instagram @SirCannabisApparel Email or DM us on Instagram @inmyheadpodcast Go to BetterHelp.com/inmyhead to get a free week of online therapy.
As a prequel to our episode with Chris Voag, this is an intro to cannabis if you will and how I've used it over the years medicinally to treat many things including anxiety, depression, migraines, insomnia, chronic pain and more. This is not an episode to tell everyone to get off all their meds and just use Cannabis, it's simply coming from my own personal experience and as always is not meant to be medical advice. Stick to your professional care taker for that. Shoutout to Better Help. They're giving our listeners a free week of online therapy. Go to betterhelp.com/inmyhead
It was an honor to chat with Greg Oliva for this episode. Based in Los Angeles, Greg is a Member of the community development team working with dedicated Mo Bros and Mo Sisters from around the US to support them in their efforts to raise funds and awareness for men’s health. He works for Movember as their Community Development Manager. He shared so much information that was new to me and it's so worth taking time on the Movember.com website to learn about the scary numbers regarding men's mental and physical health. Just to name a couple: 3 out of 4 suicides are men and there's one a minute. Meaning just during this podcast alone, 60 men have taken their life. Greg not only talks about the stats but he talks about all the tools continually being developed to stop this number in it's tracks and preventing men from dying too early. Movember has long been my favorite charity and causes. It’s the leading charity changing the face of men’s health on a global scale, focusing on mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Movember is best known for their campaign they do in November where November 1st you clean shave your face and grow a statue throughout the month which opens up conversations to others. They also have a way to create your own Mo-Community on their website and have friendly competitions for raising funds for more research and prevention tools. Movember has given the largest donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. The charity raises funds to deliver innovative, breakthrough research and support programs that enable men to live happier, healthier and longer lives. Committed to disrupting the status quo, millions have joined the movement, helping fund over 1,250 projects around the world. In addition to tackling key health issues faced by men, Movember is working to encourage men to stay healthy in all areas of their life, with a focus on men staying socially connected and becoming more open to discussing their health and significant moments in their lives. The charity’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. To donate or learn more, please visit Movember.com. Hope you enjoy this conversation and please share it with the men in your life! It's never fun when you feel like you've made so much progress with your mental health then BAM!!! Anxiety, depression, OCD etc hits you like a ton of bricks. It's times like these that I've been trying to realize that it doesn't mean I haven't made progress, it just means now I have more experience now and more tools to deal with it. It means that with experience, you know that you'll still have good moments and days. The importance of speaking up because all the more clear this time. Take care of yourselves.
You'll have to forgive me for the audio quality on this one. I was on a 6hr drive traveling and decided to record this episode that I've been wanting to do for awhile. Wish it sounded better but the message is there no matter how scatterbrained it was. I was sincere in what I said. Hope you enjoy it.
It was awesome chatting with Austin, he's a marriage and family therapist and currently runs a male retreat called Be The Rise. He shares success stories including his own with addiction and marital problems. Sorry the audio isn't fantastic on this one, will be better on the next one. It was great to have Dave Brinker on the podcast. He talks about his journey with anxiety, making lifestyle changes, and maintaining healthy habits with exercise, food and sleep. It's wild that we've been doing this podcast for a year. It's been awesome to research and speak with professionals and guests with their own personal experiences. In this episode we recap our 24 episodes, we cover things that have inspired me over the past year and we end this episode with a 7-day exercise challenge that goes from Monday May 4th - Sunday May 10th. This is 30min a day. This can be vigorous or simply walking around your neighborhood for 30min. The mental and physical benefits of 30min of elevated heart every day cannot be overstated. Join me for this challenge, I know I need a good restart on my mental and physical state. Hopefully you'll join me and we can take care of ourselves together. You can use a 30min exercise video I just shot for Shay Fit. The link is https://vimeo.com/411877473 - password: Kavin. My whole family did this workout the other day and it was hard but super fun. Jerri Jorgensen returned to our podcast to share her experience testing positive for COVID-19 while on a cruise. She shares how their ship was quarantined a mile off the coast, then when she tested positive she was quarantined in a Japanese hospital for two weeks. Her husband returned to the states, tested positive also and was quarantined in the states. She shares how the media wanted to share her story as long as she ramped up the fear. Some outlets decided not to interview her when she wouldn't agree to that. Jerri has an electric personality and I always love chatting with her. She's become an awesome friend! Hope you enjoy this episode. We're glad we're still partnering with Better Help especially during these challenging times. Quick little check in episode hoping you're all safe and healthy. I've had people reach out to me talking about things they're doing to combat the feelings of anxiety and I've shared how I cope with it as well. These are uncertain times and everyone is effected in different ways but these are the times to prove who we are. Are we the nice ones when times are good then hoard TP and push and shove at the store when times are tough, or do we use these times to be a good neighbor? Hopefully the latter. Many are suffering in ways I can't even begin to understand, but I can put myself out there to try and be there for them, even in very small ways. Let's take care of each other! Love you all! Please take advantage of our affiliates www.betterhelp.com/inmyhead for a free week of online counseling. This is all confidential.

I had such a great time chatting with Jerri as she shared her experience with her husband overcoming a pornography addiction. We cover so many great things in this episode and I learned a lot. We discuss that at the root of all addiction is trauma. One of my favorite parts was when Jerri said "The opposite of addiction isn't sobriety, it's connection." After Jerri's husband Mark went through an inpatient program they started their own in Southern Utah called Desert Solace. People come in from all over the US and outside to receive top notch inpatient treatment and connection and for those who follow the program and continue with it see a 100% success rate! They deal primarily with sex and pornography addiction. Jerri is a super fun and energetic person and I had such a good time talking with her and think there's so much to learn from this episode. If one of you is dealing with any type of addiction, she and her husband are incredible resources and can provide so many answers, resources and hope. In the intro episode of this podcast I mentioned wanting to do "challenge episodes" that promote mental and physical wellness. This is the first challenge episode and it's a 7-day meditation challenge. It's up to you what your meditation practice looks like. I usually do a guided 10-15min mindfulness meditation in the morning. In this episode, we talk mental and physical benefits of meditation as well as tips to make it more enjoyable. We talk resources like books and apps that are helpful. Kavin finishes the episode by demonstrating an 8min mindfulness session. We're back after a month off. In this episode I detail my experience back in October of receiving Ketamine treatments and how not following my own advice led me to end up in the ER. I've mentioned many times on this podcast that I'm a huge Ketamine advocate as long as it's done by a certified physician via IV infusions, that it's done of the course of 2-3 weeks and that the practitioner is present the entire time. On my week long trip to San Diego in October, I wanted to try Ketamine treatments again, so I ended up getting four treatments, four days in a row which turned out to not be a good thing. The first two treatments were two of the best experiences ever, but my body needed a rest and by day four, my body was completed exhausted. This episode outlines the bad things and the good things of this experience and what I'd do different next time. I'm still a big proponent of Ketamine infusions as long as they're done as previously mentioned. I didn't follow that outline and paid for it. But I hope in this episode you'll get something positive out of this in that I still had incredible experiences that I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. I sat down with a buddy of mine, Joe Tanner. We've been friends for years and didn't know until about three months ago that he has suffered with depression for a huge part of his life. A big theme of this episode is surrounding yourself with people you can talk to and opening up about the struggle of mental illness. Most people will find that people really care for your well being. The more we open up about this not only helps us find resources and clarity but also assists in destroying the stigma that is quickly going away. We talk sympathy vs empathy. We talk parenting as a dad with depression and anxiety and the trials in that, wanting to be the best parent you can. We talk about parenting in a way that allows space for your kids to open up if they're struggling with mental illness. We talk about how social media plays on our weaknesses of “I’m not good enough”, comparing yourself to others and instant gratification that instantly goes away. He talks ended relationships, good friendships, meditation, Ketamine therapy, new life journeys and resets and so much more. This episode is all about Ketamine treatments for mental health. I sit down with Dr. Drew Belnap, M.D. who runs the South Coast TMS & Ketamine clinic in Encinitas, CA. He's treated thousands of patients with Ketamine with anxiety, depression, suicidality, PTSD, OCD, bipolar, migraines, eating disorders, chronic pain and more. He said science researchers are treating Ketamine like the Holy Grail and they're just starting to realize the benefits of it. I've personally received Ketamine treatments and had great experiences and Drew has had many people tell him that he literally saved their life. For many people this is a last resort after they've tried everything. Over 80% of patients experience a 50% improvement to their mental health and many go into full remission. I hope you like this episode, please subscribe and share with others! Thank you for watching. This is a solo episode where I talk about my recent experience having anxiety and depression creep back in for a few weeks. I talk about the things I do when I start feeling anxious again. This time I completely tweaked most aspects of my lifestyle. Started exercising 5 times a week, doing sauna, supplementing vitamins, CBD, cut out sugar, caffeine and gluten, did spin classes, yoga, pilates, meditation, weight lifting, running and more. I did anything I could to burn energy and also calm my mind and body. And while I started all this to get feeling better, I've developed a little routine that feels much better than just peeling myself off the bed and going to work. For the past 10yrs anxiety and depression have been a roller coaster for me, sometimes being a mellow kids ride with little ups and downs and then like recently like a Magic Mountain free fall. This has been some of the most extreme anxiety I've felt in the past 10yrs and it felt really defeating but through taking control and trying to be healthy in all aspects, I've been feeling much better and once again realized that we can't get down on ourselves when these things surface again. We need to put in the work to feeling better cause it won't just disappear on its own. In this episode I share specifics about these experiences in the past couple of months to hopefully help listeners know that while they may be currently experiencing heavy depression or anxiety, it does pass if we take the wheel and take care of ourselves. I hope you enjoy this hour long rant haha! Krystal Chong is a Holistic Anxiety Specialist. We talked about so many things on this episode from dealing with anxiety on a daily basis, to holistic options to changing negative mindsets that we tell ourselves. Krystal was diagnosed with general anxiety at a level 9 out of 10 at the age of 14. She was told that with medication and luck she'd be able to get down to a 7 for the rest of her life. In her 20s she got to the point where she thought suicide was the only option. That day she made the shift to change her odds and her outcome became what it is today. She's been on a 20+ year journey to find healthy solutions to anxiety. She has a book out called "What the Hell am I Supposed to do With My Life" (https://amzn.to/2ZjvDY0) that takes you through her journey of having paralyzing anxiety daily to waking up everyday energized and excited for life. She's had incredible feedback and reviews for her book http://krystalchong.com/press/. You can check out some interviews she's done here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-tWR78lIgA&t=34s, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6ftsY74CVM&t=4s , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ky-BIPIsQXw . She also has a lot of free downloads for meditation, diet and anxiety emergency tool kits available on her website (https://linktr.ee/krystalchong). I think one of the most important things with this episode and many others is that there are so many options to finding the resources and help you need for your optimal mental health. Whether that's medication, therapy, yoga, meditation, exercise, diet, Ketamine or all of the above, the important part is that you take your mental recovery into your own hands and use the resources available. I had a great conversation with Dani Bates. Her husband Denny died by suicide in March of this year and Dani opens up about the heartbreak that followed living life as a single mother now to two daughters. I heard about Dani when my wife saw a video on Instagram that Dani had shared which showed her 3yr old crying in bed grieving over the loss of her dad. People who slip into suicidal ideation often think that their loved ones will be better off if they're gone and this video should make it clear that that's a total lie your brain is telling you. People won't be better off with you gone. People have reached out to Dani saying the video of Dani’s daughter has saved their life, that they were hours or days away from ending their life and seeing the video made them realize what they’d be doing to their family or friends by taking their life. There are too many resources out there for you to be going at this alone! Don't do it, reach out to me if you have no one else, call a suicide hotline, look up the free NAMI classes, don't go it alone! You can find Dani on Instagram at @Dani.Bates, on YouTube, her website danibates.com and her new podcast called “Make it Awkward”. Thanks for listening as always and please share with others. We filmed this episode! Check it out at our new YouTube: https://youtu.be/bq1seFQOqZI In this episode, TJ discusses his experience with Bipolar Disorder, drug and alcohol addiction then food addiction. He talks about having an addictive personality and how you can overcome one addiction and you often just trade it for another but that you can choose healthier options. He talks about the fear and stigma of opening up about his mental illness, the fear of people shutting him out, not having friends and how he came to embrace opening up about it in hopes people wouldn't feel alone. I had a great time chatting with TJ and hope you enjoy listening to an authentic person talk about his experiences here. Trigger Warning: This episode discusses in detail topics of suicide. I sat down with Laura Warburton as she shared about her daughter Hannah who died by suicide in 2014 at the tender age of 16 after a series of concussions which led to a fierce battle with depression and anxiety. She discusses the impact on her family and everyone who cares about Hannah. Laura discusses her own battle with mental health and how she's recently discovered and become an advocate for Ketamine treatments as long as they are done by IV infusion, one on one by a medical professional and partnered with ongoing therapy. I'm incredibly inspired by people that have been completely knocked down and not only find a way to get up, but create meaning out of the suffering and do something good with it, and that's exactly what Laura and her family have done. Laura is not only creating a space for open discussions on suicide and mental health in general but is also an advocate for people realizing the seriousness of concussions. She's doing a lot of this through a foundation she created called Live Hannah's Hope (www.LiveHannahsHope.org). There are so many incredible resources at this website. Please visit it, let's get educated on suicide prevention. Had a great time sitting down with Leigh Cox to hear a little bit about her experiences and it was really fun cause we covered a lot of topics. She received her Master's in Psychology from Pepperdine University, then became a certified pilates instructor and became more experienced in mind/body work. I really enjoyed this episode because it’s unique to any other one we’ve done so far. We did more of a free form conversation and whatever topics came up we entertained them and there’s definitely something for everyone here so I recommend hearing it out because we moved through many topics like: The relationship between physical and mental health, postpartum depression, medication, the different manifestations of mental illness, opening up about mental health and suicide, growing up in a religious culture that holds certain expectations for women and mothers, and being open minded to different world views. I commend Leigh for being so open and honest about her story because I think it will help a lot of people. Her honesty about the messiness of parenting and especially parenting with mental illness for me is very honorable and i commend her for that cause it’s scary enough to feel that in your own head and a whole other level to open up about it. Great things coming up for the month of July! This week we're recording 4 different episodes with a couple professionals and two personal stories so we’ll be releasing an episode every Sunday evening for the month of July and I’m really excited to learn from these great people. I sat down with Kris Barber and I learned so much from her. She was and is an awesome reminder that we can’t assume anything about someone without really getting to know them. At various times through my mental illness experience I’ve sunken into the thought processes of looking at everyone else that they’re not suffering, that they don’t know what I’m going through and that’s a very destructive path to go down. While not everyone has a diagnosed mental illness, no one is immune to adversity in their life. Kris is such a sweet person and it’s incredible that she’s that way considering the twists and turns that have come into her life, and that each time she’s come out with heightened acceptance, awareness, love and strength. I'm excited for you to hear her story! Please subscribe, leave a rating and most importantly share this if you think if could help someone. Peace, Love and Gratitude my peeps! We'd love to hear from you! Contact us at: TheInMyHeadPodcast@gmail.com IG/Twitter: @InMyHeadPodcast Facebook: @TheInMyHeadPodcast
Solo episode exploring the act of finding meaning in suffering. Kavin highlights a few stories of inspirational people using their struggle as raw material to build something powerful and influences people for good. He talks about Mother Theresa and the discovery of her journals post mortem that revealed a dark shadow that loomed over her throughout her life, which just adds power and credibility to the great work she did during her life despite the deep pain and loneliness she often felt. Immaculée Ilibagiza, a Rwandan genocide survivor, Victor Frankl, a holocaust survivor and author of Man's Search for Meaning, Gandhi, and MMA fighter Israel Adesanya are more of the examples discussed in the episode of inspiring people that understood that while they can't always control their situation, they can always control their attitude and reaction towards any circumstances. Kavin finishes by discussing a common Stoic Philosophy principle that all things and misfortunes happen to us for a reason and can be used as the materials that shape our character, how we view the world and how we treat other people. Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to this podcast! If you're enjoying it, please give us a good rating and review if you have time on whatever platform you're listening to this on. I sat down with Ryan Renteria who’s a resident of Carlsbad, CA with his wife and three boys. Him and I lived by each other and one of the first times we chatted we made this connection of having very similar symptoms of anxiety. We each had our own vocabulary for the things we were going through like brain fog but instantly were friends in this struggle. While you never want another to suffer with mental illness, it’s definitely comforting when you meet someone going through it as well and you realize you’re not alone. Ryan has a very kind and calming presence. He talks about how anxiety has in a weird way made him want to be more social. It's made him appreciate all the little things we tend to take for granted. He's made big lifestyle changes in diet, spirituality, meditation and exercise. He talks of the power of having positive and supportive people in your life and credits a lot of his well being to having a supportive wife. Not sure if this is backed up anywhere but it seems as a whole that men are less likely to speak up about their struggles with mental illness so I'm glad to see a shift in that trend and more men are beginning to speak up. I think people are more hesitant to speak up because first, they aren't even sure what's going on with them and next they aren't sure how people will react when they say they're struggling with mental illness. I'm learning time and time again, that most people are more than willing to help, we first just need to speak up. Thanks for listening and share this if you think it will be helpful for someone. She has done additional extensive training, receiving a Certificate in Mindfulness in Psychotherapy in 2014. Christine's practice is in St. George, UT. She helps patients with a variety of mental health related issues as well as dealing with bullying and past trauma. I split our hour long interview into two parts. This is part 1 where we discuss dealing with anxiety, depression and suicidality. She talks about how someone struggling with this can reach out but also how people can help those they care about struggling with mental health. She talks about how people can consistently show up and keep those loved ones safe when battling suicidal ideation. We discuss the huge jump in depression and anxiety over the past decade and how social media contributes to that. We sat down with Julia Stewart and had a great conversation. I've loved getting to know her and had a great time discussing her journey living with depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation since age 13. I really admire how she owns her story and struggle and has found peace in owning who she is and finding answers in openly talking about it. We discuss her ups and downs and many different things she's tried to overcome the despair she's often felt. We later talk about her experience receiving ketamine treatments and how for her has been one of the most positive experiences through all this. I originally met Julia doing a video shoot for a company in Encinitas, CA called South Coast TMS and Ketamine. It's owned by Dr. Drew Belnap, MD who worked as an anesthesiologist for years in the hospital setting and now runs his clinic treating people suffering with anxiety, depression, suicidality and migraines through Ketamine IV infusions. I also received Ketamine treatments when we lived in Encinitas and had a positive experience with it. I talk about it at the of the episode and give advice on what to be aware of and how to find the safest and best place if you're considering trying Ketamine for yourself. Hopefully you enjoy this episode and welcome to the podcast Julia Stewart. This is the premiere episode of the In My Head Podcast! The host Kavin will be sharing what this podcast will be all about. Most of these episodes will center around the theme of mental health and wellness and trying to dispense with the stigma around mental illness. We want to create open discussions in a time where it's most needed. While a lot of these episodes are to help people struggling with mental illness, it's also for those seeking help for people they know and helping you better understand what they're going through. In future episodes, we'll have guests with personal experience with mental illness, professionals sharing their expertise, solo episodes discussing certain topics as well as stand alone "challenge" episodes where we try to implement new positive routines or behaviors as well as trying to get rid of things that hold us back or tie us down to negative mind sets. We're very excited to be launching this new podcast and hope it will be helpful for you or someone you know. Please subscribe via iTunes or wherever you listen to your podcasts and share this if you think it will help someone. Thank you for listening and welcome to the In My Head Podcast!
