Self-Defence Law with Leigh Simms Leigh started training in "traditional" karate and after obtaining numerous dan grades. Leigh and his instructor Mike Judd 5th Dan, became disillusioned with the primary focus on "sport" karate and lack of real world application to the kata applications which were common place in their association and in the larger karate world at the time. Leigh Book : UK Self-Defence Law Leigh and Mike then changed their focus and began to study the history of karate along with training with the elite of practical martial arts. Leigh now specialises in practical kata applications which are applicable in the real world and legally underpinned and that are SYSTEMATISED in a LOGICAL and STRUCTURED order so that it easy to follow and progress can be made indefinitely (making karate fulfilling for life)! As a lifelong practitioner of Karate, including a 3rd Dan in Shotokan Karate under Mike Judd 5th Dan, Leigh currently holds a 5th Dan with the British Combat Karate Association (BCKA) and the English Karate Federation (EKF). Additionally, Leigh holds the Full Bunkai Jutsu Instructorship under world renowned martial artist and practical kata bunkai specialist Iain Abernethy 7th Dan and has gained a 1st Dan in Abernethy Jissen Karate-do. Combined with his Karate training, Leigh is a Solicitor who has studied UK Self-Defence Law in College, University and Post-Graduate courses achieving LLB with Honours and a Postgradue Diploma in Legal Practice. As an outspoken advocate of cross-training, Leigh has studied Jeet Kune Do & Kali under Guru Mick Tully. Sensei Joe Andrews is a Martial Arts Practitioner and Chief Instructor at the Somerset Applied Karate in Somerset, UK. Stripping the good from the bad. I first learned that principle not from karate but in my old career when I was training as a graphic designer. I was the kind that my first idea was my best idea. But what they said, I've got make a whole lot of doodle, 30, 40, 50 designs. Only when you do that, you can split them into good and bad. Sensei Joe Andrews - Episode 740 Sensei Joe worked as a nightclub doorman and various security jobs for over 10 years, gaining experience in violence prevention, violence management, de-escalation, communication, and social psychology. He used this expertise to help teach his students how to watch for signs of violence and how to avoid or manage the situation. It is also during this time that Joe realized what does and does NOT work in combative martial arts! Joe has trained with some great names in Karate and Martial Arts such as Iain Abernethy, Peter Consterdine, Christian Wedewardt, Les Bubka, Andi Kidd, Tommy Joe Moore, Mary Stevens, John Johnston, Leigh Simms, Bob Rhodes, Terry O'Neill, Shinji Akita, Gary Roberts, Elwin Hall, Gerry Bryan, Mario Spillere, Leon Jay and Paul Herbert. This episode marks the conclusion of our annual martial movie massacre season. It might be the end of this particular tradition, depending on how the programming goes for next season and not to mention your all-important feedback. CCMA will be making some major steps forward with our provision of services in the New Year. I am still not entire sure what next year's podcast theme will be, so again please let me know via the usual channels. From as long as I can remember, a proposed final instalment to a series was always an exciting prospect. Very few good movies, TV shows or other forms of media live up to expectations of their finale sequel or episode. Some of the best examples I think take the form of accidents. However, I am confident that you will enjoy the last Martial Movie Massacre. This show has some great guests, such as Iain Abernethy, Leigh Simms, Les Bubka, Chris Hanson and a piece written especially for the show by the great Gretchen Carlson. There is much rule breaking in the show – in fact it is the office party equivalent of an end of year office party, although I hope no one is photographing their arse on the photocopier. Considering all the liberties taken with my mandate and blatant rule-breaking going on in these recommendations, the finale episode appears to resemble an end of year office party. Although, I think we avoided anyone doing the podcast equivalent of photocopying their derriere. So, for the last time, put down the gloves and pick up the popcorn. We've both been busy for the last year, so it took Iain Abernethy and me this long to get another crossover podcast done. This time, we asked listeners to tell us their pet peeves and we then first steel-manned them to follow up with weak-manning them. The goal was to look for different angles to each one, nuance, and so on. As always, it was loads of fun for us to discuss all this and there will be a Part 2 soon. Enjoy! My guest today is Les Bubka, a thoughtful karate instructor out of England and a contemporary of Iain Abernethy. Les employs a different approach to teaching karate that he calls the "inverted pyramid," a way to teach minimal techniques to beginners, grow their technique base as they progress through the intermediate stages of training, but then narrow their focus again as they become advanced into the black belt grades. This leads into his very learner-centered approach to training karate, allowing his students the freedom to find out how karate techniques work for them instead of forcing them to master a single formally "correct" way of doing things -- and construct their own style of karate in that process. My friend Chris Hanson of Karate Unity joins us on this one for a discussion about all things kata related. It was a great talk that covered a lot including the idea that Iain Abernethy is the Indiana Jones of kata. Enjoy.
My guest today is Iain Abernethy, a well-known expert on practical karate training and kata application, and an advocate of traditional martial arts practice. In this episode, Iain presents his own view of kata as a process of 4 inextricable stages: 1. Solo Practice 2. Functional Application 3. Principle-based Partner Practice 4. Live Partner Practice or "Kata-based" Sparring While most other traditional martial artists view kata as a solo exercise that must be translated into practical techniques, Iain sees solo practice, application, and sparring as all one and the same process entailed by the kata system. Iain also explains what "kata-based sparring" is, why he hates one step sparring, and the necessity of bringing modern training methods into traditional martial arts practice. It was heaps of fun to record this special crossover podcast episode with Karate-expert Iain Abernethy. I had him on my podcast in episode 18 and it was a great interview. Iain suggested the idea of doing something together and I agreed right away. This is the result. The concept was this: We asked our followers on social media (and me on Patreon too) for questions to ask the other instructor. During the talk, we ask eachother these questions and then discuss them a bit. Iain comes from a mainly Japanese and Okinawan martial arts perspective where mine is mostly from Chinese martial arts. I think there are some interesting comparisons we made about the arts and how to train, along with hearing more from how we each view things. I very much enjoyed our conversation, I learned a lot and I'm confident you'll enjoy it as well. If you'd like us to do this again, let me know in the comments and we'll set it up. Enjoy! Be safe in your travels and your pursuits :) A Listener asks the following question : "Good Evening Sifu, How have you been? I have really been enjoying the last couple of podcasts that you put out about physiological learning and the physical senses used in martial training. I am fascinated with the mind/body connection. I also really enjoyed the ep 45 that included the ingredients needed to master the arts(any). I have heard about Aikido being the martial arts of "love" (gentleman, philosopher, martial artist), lacking strikes and using the opponents aggression against them. I even watched a documentary on it last night. And, we have a martial arts center very close to my house that teaches this and other styles. But then I made a mistake of watching a video of Aikido vs Jui Jistu, the Aikido practitioner didn't stand much of a chance. What are your thoughts on this form? I am very interested in Bushido, but am afraid that my life doesn't align with this life style. Even if you don't have much to say about this, I would love if you could give me a tip on where I could find a style that matches my personality and life values. I really with that I lived in your neck of the woods. I love you passion for the arts, and I your philosophy really rings true to my spirit. Thanks ahead of time for your time.Patrick" I call on a couple of folks to weigh in : Lori O'Connell : very sharp lady and I like her approach to martial arts, She teaches Jiu Jitsu at Pacific Wave Jiu Jitsu and another a man from the UK, that I have gotten to know, Iain Abernethy, he is a Karate man, and part of the World Combat Association, an organization that promotes martial arts for combat that I totally get on board with, because it is more aligned to how I was trained in martial arts and so were my classmates in the early 90's.
