This week we sit down with UK MMA Pioneer Les Allen - BJJ Black Belt, Catch Wrestler, Kickboxer and innovator. Les Allen has been one of the leaders in the UK MMA scene for over 25 years. Coach Bryan is available for Clinics and Seminars world wide. Email: levelupgrappling@gmail.com for info.
Chisanga Malata of Sun Sport returns to talk about a host of news stories generated from the U.K. scene. Is it possible that Paddy Pimblett will be fast tracked into a title situation in a similar way to Sean O'Malley? Is Mo Mokaev's return to Brave CF slightly underwhelming? And how does Dana White's continued praise of Jon Jones keep getting weirder?
We thought the narrative had changed surrounding the heavyweight title conundrum after Tom Aspinall's magic performance at UFC 304, but it feels like ever since that night in Manchester Dana White has been on a PR pedestal for Jon “Bones” Jones. Chisanga Malata of SunSport returns to wade through the debris of 304 and consider a world where neither Jones nor Stipe Miocic want to fight beyond their Madison Square Garden clash in November. Furthermore, what if Jones continues to fight, but pending victory over Renan Fereirra, Francis Ngannou is next opponent instead? We also ponder whether the hopes for an immediate rematch for Leon Edwards are dead and briefly look forward to UFC 305.
After returning home to Dublin after UFC 304, Petesy gives us the lowdown on his experience in Manchester, his reactions to Dana White insisting there would be no more bonuses beyond 50k and much more. Joining the show, Paddy Holohan instantly reacts to becoming the first Irishman to both win a UFC fight and coach someone to winning a UFC fight. Andy Stevenson returns to talk all the big storylines that came out of the Co-op Live on Sunday morning.
Petesy arrived in Manchester early on Thursday morning, interviewing Irish MMA legend Paddy Holohan on the ten-year anniversary of UFC Dublin and discussing his student Shauna Bannon taking up his famed berserker role for UFC 304. After a day of media activity, Petesy met up with colleagues Jose Youngs (MMA Fighting) and Abbey Subhan (MMA Junkie) to discuss the many storylines at the event: is Belal's hatred for Leon Edwards real, will Jon Jones really face the winner of Aspinall vs, Blaydes, Paddy Pimblett's mental health struggles and much more.
Returning to The Craic, Caolan Loughran is as cool as the other side of the pillow ahead of his UFC 304 clash with short notice replacement opponent, Jake Hadley. The Team Kaobon fighter discusses how good it feels fighting so close to his adopted home of Liverpool, how he was inspired to pursue fighting on the back of UFC Dublin in 2014 and how he is relishing a pint of Guinness on Sunday as he watches the All Ireland final.
In this episode of our Liverpool Tour Series, we are joined by one of the most recognisable faces in the Irish and UK MMA scene - Shem Rock. Shem's story is like something out of a fiction novel - accused of a crime he didn't commit, he fled from home and spent the next 10 years of his life on the run. It was during this time abroad that he found martial arts, and began competing across Asia and eventually Europe, where he was finally arrested after suffering his first loss. Shem then spent 6 months in jail before being cleared of the charge, and since his release has been chasing his ultimate goal – becoming the best martial artist he can be and fighting on the biggest stages in the world. ------------------------------------------------------------------ We would like to give a big thank you to the Official Sponsor for our Liverpool Tour, BeTheDifference 121 Training. It's been over a year since Shauna Bannon made her UFC debut and the Tallaght UFC straw weight is adamant the world will see a host of improvements in her second trip to the Octagon. “Mama B” talks personal tests over the last twelve months, being coached by Paddy Holohan who made his debut ten years ago on the historic UFC Dublin card, the outrage surrounding her opponent Alice Ardelean and training alongside Kiefer Crosbie and Molly McCann in preparation for the event.
Could Leon Edwards' be eyeing bout with lightweight champion and a 185-pound title shot prove troublesome for Irish welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry? What the fuss about Shauna Bannon's short notice opponent Alice Ardelean? The Trident of Knowledge - featuring Andy Stevenson and Donagh Corby - return to The Craic to break it all down.
Send us a Text Message.Lee Hasdell is often known as "The Godfather of UK MMA" and for good reason. He discovered the burgeoning new limited rules fighting scene in Japan before the first UFC shook the martial arts world to its foundations. Already a successful nak muay and kickboxer who had fought internationally under some of the biggest pioneers of the sport and earning several titles at the time, he switched to MMA and began promoting the first incarnations of this new sport in the 1990s. He quickly became a controversial and revered figure. However, Lee's scope stretches far further than competing in, teaching and promoting professional combat sports. He has a deep respect for traditional martial arts, was one of the original reality revolutionaries on the self-protection circuit and a sophisticated cross-trainer who gathers insight from a range of disciplines outside of combative systems. On this episode Lee shares his insights into Combudo, an organisation and approach to martial arts, combat sports and self-protection he founded in 2000. U.K. BJJ pioneer and head coach of UFC interim heavyweight champion, Andy Aspinall, returns to The Craic to give us the lowdown on his son's preparation for Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304. Having watched the growth of the U.K. scene since it's inception, Aspinall explains how it feels to see his son at the forefront of what could be a stratospheric moment for the sport on July 27th and gives insight into his son's preparation. Andy also weighs in on the current situation with Jon Jones, the undisputed champion, seemingly unwilling to allow Aspinall to attempt to unify the titles.
Petesy is looking forward to Ian Machado Garry's matchup with Michael “Venom” Page more than any fight on the stacked UFC 303 card. Keeping with the U.K. vs. Ireland theme, he invited his old verbal sparring partner Chisanga Malata back on the show to discuss the meeting. The lads weigh-in on the pre-fight talk between the two, question whether Garry is setting himself up for a big fall by talking down MVP's skillset and discuss who has more to gain as a victor in the high-stakes welterweight clash. Petesy also discusses Team KF's Omran Chaaban's big win agains the number one seed, Shamidkhan Magomedov, and gives his take on Garry's comments regarding the Irish media in a recent interview with Severe MMA.
Chisanga Malata is back on The Craic to discuss the slew of anguish amongst UFC fans due to the price of UFC Manchester tickets. The lads react to the online onslaught of fans after tickets were released last week, give their thoughts on the budding bromance between Leon Edwards and Tom Aspinall and shed light on how Chisanga didn't end up in Dublin last week after the cancellation of the UFC 303 press conference.
Petesy is joined Bloody Elbow reporter and the host of Wanna Fight About It, Donagh Corby, from Paris where is on site covering the Bellator Champion Series event that will se Cedric Doumbé look to avenge his first career loss. Petesy and Donagh also discuss Ian Machado Garry and MVP, Garry wanting to compete at UFC 303 and MVP seemingly wanting the fight to take place at UFC 304, and the Irish charges Shauna Bannon and Caolan Loughran competing at UFC Manchester. Petesy also provides an update on the Co-op Live arena, which is scheduled to host UFC Manchester, following its official opening on Tuesday.
After all of my belly-aching about the issues with the venue that is scheduled to host UFC Manchester, The Co-op Live is now set for it's official launch on Tuesday May 14th. Chisanga Malata of Sun Sport joins the show to discuss all the concerns surrounding the venue, whether UFC have a contingency plan if things continue to go badly for the arena and Manchester's own Lerone Murphy who headlines a UFC Apex event against Edson Barbosa this weekend.
The U.S. start times for July 27's UFC Manchester card should be the least of fans' worries as the Co-op Live venue, the arena that is set to host the event, has been embroiled in a “fiasco” which has seen multiple high-profile concert cancelled. Petesy gives a timeline of what has happened with the arena, from gigs being cancelled as fans stand in line to gain admission, to air conditioning units falling from the rafter and the general manager of the project stepping down from his role. As well as the UFC Manchester talk, Petesy looks back on a rough night in Rio for European fan favourites and discusses his shoutouts from Ariel Helwani, Dan Hardy and Paul Hughes on the latest episode of The MMA Hour.
SunSport journalist Chisanga Malata and Petesy have been discussing a potential UFC Manchester event since December on The Craic, but the event is yet to be confirmed. With Tom Aspinall present at UFC 300, and Chisanga on site at the event reporting, it felt like it was an open goal to announce the date that has been rumoured for the all-new Co-op Live arena. Chisanga and Petesy discuss what the holdup has been, if they're still confident Leon Edwards and Tom Aspinall will be on the card, the emerging storyline between Aspinall and Alex Pereira and Bobby Green declaring interest in a clash with Paddy Pimblett.
The Trident of Knowledge form with Donagh Corby and Andy Stevenson returning to The Craic to discuss Omran Chabaan of Team KF and Paddy McCorry of FAI being announced as cast members for the upcoming season of TUF, which begins filming in a little over a week's time. The trio shed light on the fighters careers up until this point, consider whether Alex Grasso or Valentina Shevchenko's team would be better to join, discuss the dying throes of the TUF concept and also look at the inclusion of Cage Warriors bantamweight prospect, Nathan Fletcher, who fights out of the acclaimed Next Generation gym in Liverpool, home of Paddy Pimblett and Molly McCann.
Michael Venom Page had a perfect introduction to his new promotion at UFC 299. From his spectacular homage to the Undertaker in his entrance, to his signature showboating in the Octagon and his unanimous decision win over Kevin Holland, it went about as well as it could. However, in the post-fight press conference, Dana White underlined that he wasn't a fan of his ringwalk and disclosed that he must “match-make the right way” for his next clash. The great Chisanga Malata of SunSport returns to give his take on the Londoner's big debut and on the verbal agreement between interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall and Curtis Blaydes verbally agreeing to a rematch, which would likely take place on the rumoured UFC Manchester card in late July.
During the pandemic, Jack Cartwright was bantamweight champion of Cage Warriors and considered one of the best prospects in European MMA. After a forgettable DQ win over Sylwester Miller, the word was that the Manchester native would be given an opportunity on Contender Series to prove he was UFC calibre. The opportunity came a whopping seventeen months after the Miller fight, with Cartwright coming out of it on the wrong end of a decision to Jose Johnson. In November 2023, Cartwright made a massive statement in his Oktagon debut, setting up a clash with former divisional champion Jonas Magard, which takes pride of place in Newcastle this Saturday night for Oktagon 52. Cartwright joins The Craic for the first time to discuss being CW champion, the Contender Series loss, Jonas Magard and his future with Oktagon.
After their lofty aspirations for the proposed UFC Manchester in July, Petesy Carroll welcomed back U.K. journalist Chisanga Malata so they could walk back their hopes of joint headline event with Leon Edwards and Tom Aspinall at the top of the bill. Following the devastating news of Irish flyweight Ryan Curtis suffering a career-ending injury last week, Petesy recalls covering the Dubliner's career and gives an overview of the situation he is now facing. He also describes how the Irish MMA community have rallied around Curtis due to his close friend Leah McCourt going public with the information on Saturday. Following Leon Edwards' successful title defence against Colby Covington, Petesy is joined by one of the best in the business, Chisanga Malata, who was at T-Mobile Arena to cover UFC 296 on Saturday night. Chisanga relives shocking remarks made at both UFC press conferences during the week, gives his take on UFC Manchester speculation and how impressed he was by defending UFC champion Leon Edwards.
Petesy is joined by UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards ahead of his UFC 296 clash with Colby Covington. “Rocky” discusses life as a champion, Colby Covington's last chance at UFC gold, Donald Trump hoping he loses, Ian Garry and the rumoured UFC Manchester card. Petesy gives his take on the UFC Manchester rumours, talk quietening down on UFC Dublin and the highly anticipated UFC 296 press conference on Thursday.
Following on from a massive night for U.K. MMA in New York with Tom Aspinall clinching heavyweight gold, Paul Craig becomes the first Scot to headline a UFC card when he faces Brendan Allen in his second fight at middleweight. Craig gives insight on the confidence he's gained from seeing his training partner crowned champion at Madison Square Garden and endorses the growing hopes for U.K. stadium show in 2024. Also on the show, Petesy gives his take on the latest in the Leon Edwards/Ian Garry saga.
A stadium show in the summer of 2024 in the U.K. could give MMA a bigger spotlight than it's ever had in the U.K. and Ireland, and with both Tom Aspinall and Leon Edwards currently holding titles, there is no better time to do it for the UFC. Legendary Craic campaigner and a frontrunner for U.K. combat sports media, Chisanga Malata, returns to the show to give us his take on Aspinall's career defining victory over Sergei Pavlovich, what's next for the Wigan Warrior and what the implications of having a U.K. stadium show could be at this point.
What was the first thing U.K. martial-arts O.G. Andy Aspinall taught his son when he began to teach him self defence? Do. Not. Get. Hit. The childhood teachings of his father will ring truer than ever on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden when the golden boy of English MMA takes on the thunderous stopping power of Sergei Pavlovich for the interim heavyweight title. The man who taught Aspinall everything he knows, his father Andy Aspinall, returns to The Craic to talk short notice shots at destiny, New York City, how to fight Pavlovich and much more.
Joining The Craic today is Alex Pattle of the Independent, who broke the news that Ian Garry has been asked not to return to the home of the UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards. Pattle discusses conducting the interview with Garry, how he thinks the Irish welterweight feels about the situation and ponders whether it's all that shocking considering the two men are in the same division and Garry is already booked to fight a former teammate in Vicente Luque. Petesy questions what the public perception of the news will be considering this is the second gym that have asked Garry not to return to following Team KF cutting ties with the Dubliner before his Cage Warriors title fight with Jack Grant.
One of the biggest prospects on the UFC roster, undefeated flyweight and multiple time amateur world champion, Muhammad Mokaev joins the Craic.Mo gives us the lowdown on his UFC 294 clash with Tim Elliott, plots his route to breaking Jones' record of being the youngest ever UFC champion and sheds light on why he feels Manel Kape is ducking him.

The king of the U.K. main event, Tom Aspinall, returns to The Craic to give his take on Ciryl Gane no selling a fight with him following the UFC Paris main event. The Wigan man reveals how he ended up on the beer with the French heavyweight following the event and gives his take on Jon Jones' recent comments reflecting on the two facing off for the title one day.
