In this week's episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating Principle #10: Honor Your Health with Gentle Nutrition. In this week's episode, Hannah and Ali are joined by nutrition therapist and Registered Dietitian Rachael Hartley. Rachael is a nationally-recognized food and nutrition expert who is passionate about helping others rediscover the joy of eating and foster a healthier relationship with food. Rachael is author of Gentle Nutrition: A Non-Diet Approach to Healthy Eating, which explores the role of nutrition in intuitive eating, so she was the perfect guest to answer all your listener questions about gentle nutrition. Why isn't it important to eat healthy if it could contribute to reducing morbidity later on? As practitioners, how do we help patients both have freedom with food and make choices that they like and are satisfying, while also stabilizing their blood sugars? Is it possible to be an intuitive eater and manage a chronic illness at the same time? Do I have to eat fast food or “unhealthy” foods to be an intuitive eater? Is it possible to eat intuitively and just prefer eating healthy foods? We live in a world in which diet culture implies that food and fitness are the only two things that will make or break your health and while they may play a role, in reality, it is a very minimal role compared to environmental factors, socio-economic status, genetic predisposition and many other things that just aren't behaviors that can be controlled. The research is clear that increasing pleasure, joy, food freedom, and widening the definition of what we consider health while incorporating the ten guiding principles of Intuitive Eating has been proven to improve physical, mental and emotional health sustainably- sounds pretty great right?! Hannah, Ali and Rachael are here in this final episode of the Intuitive Eating series to help guide the listeners to focus on the power of adding food in for health and wellness vs. excluding foods for fear while remembering that health is so much more than the food we eat or the choices we make. Make sure to head over to the @eatcakepod Instagram account Thursdays at 3pm PST for a live support "Snack Time & Chill"- a chance for a supported snack at a physical distance, to ask your nutrition questions and have some laughs along the way. In this week's episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating Principle #9: Movement- Feel the Difference. Exercise can many times go hand in hand with diet culture so when learning how to reconnect to food and start to trust your body, it can get confusing deciding if, when or how to start to exercise. On this week's episode Hannah and Ali are joined by certified personal trainer Julie Newbry. Julie is passionate about helping her clients use exercise as a form of self-care rather than punishment while focusing on health promoting behaviors rather than weight or aesthetics so she was the perfect person to answer all your listener questions on incorporating movement while recovering from diet culture. As I am exercising more I have been noticing more binge urges and behaviors- do I have to give up exercise that I actually enjoy and which has been helping my mental health infinitely, or do I carry on while consciously ignoring the disordered voices in my head until they go away? Is it wrong to like the changes to my body and attention I am getting as I feel more toned and fit? Is it counterproductive to Intuitive Eating to feel like I need to force myself to exercise? Is it okay to not listen to your intuition when it comes to exercise, especially if it means you'll give up exercise forever? Is it okay for exercise to be taking up a lot of my time and energy if it's helping me get stronger and healthier (vs thinner and more focused on the number of the scale)? Is it okay for exercise to be a huge part of my life and identity? When it comes to exercise, diet culture gives a lot rules and “shoulds” which can make choices feel anything but intuitive. In this week's episode Hannah, Ali and Julie will help you connect to the ‘why' behind movement and help you feel the difference when movement is not guided by rigid rules or diet culture B.S.. Oh and spoiler alert- you don't have a moral obligation to move your body but if you want to, this episode will help you do it in a kind, compassionate and FUN way. In this week's episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating principle #8: Respect Your Body. To cover this complex topic they are joined by registered dietitian and eating disorders specialist Christyna Johnson. Christyna practices from a person-centered perspective with a social justice lens to help dismantle diet culture which made her the perfect expert to help answer all your questions about respecting your body. How do you overcome the desire to lose weight and be thin, when that's considered to be more desirable in our society? Can people who fall outside of the thin, white ideal benefit from Intuitive Eating? My body is changing as I work through Intuitive Eating and recovery from binge eating- how do I acknowledge where my body is at and shift away from weight loss as a goal? Is this extra weight I've gained as I work on the IE principles really what my body needs, or just a result of overindulging in play food? How do I liberate myself from the negative body image I've developed from thirty years of exposure to diet culture? How can I develop a loving attitude towards my body, whatever its shape, when I've been conditioned to hate every speck of cellulite I see? Coming to a place of neutral respect for your body is a key aspect in healing from diet culture but it can be complicated especially when the idea of loving your body feels far away. Letting go of the thin ideal can be challenging and the process can feel overwhelming which makes this eighth principle an important step in the journey to find body peace and food freedom. In this episode, Hannah, Ali and Christyna use their expertise to help you take the first small steps towards a place of respecting your body for all the wonderful, incredible things it is able to do. Make sure to head over to the @eatcakepod Instagram account Thursdays at 3pm PST for a live support "Snack Time & Chill"- a chance for a supported snack at a physical distance, to ask your nutrition questions and have some laughs along the way. In this week's episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating principle #7: Cope with Your Emotions. Learning to validate and cope with your emotions can be a very important step in the process of Intuitive Eating which is why Mimi Cole was the perfect guest for this week's episode. Mimi is a 2nd year graduate student in the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counselling program at The University of North Carolina and co-host of The Lovely Becoming podcast. On her podcast, Mimi interviews mental health and eating disorders practitioners from all over to discuss topics related to Intuitive Eating, systems of oppression, anti-fat bias and much more so there was no question Hannah and Ali had to have her on this episode to answer all your questions about emotional eating and coping with your feelings. How can I just rely on physical hunger to guide my food choices? How do you break the vicious cycle of emotional eating? Is it wrong to eat for boredom? Is it ever okay to eat for emotions? How do I stop using food as punishment when I feel I have made a mistake with my eating? What do you think about using food or treats as a reward? How do I break the cycle of using food as a motivation? Emotional eating is a topic that diet culture likes to use to create guilt and shame around choices to eat. Human beings eat for a variety of reasons including for pleasure, joy, comfort, nurturing, excitement, celebration, and many more including nutrients. The diet world wants you to believe that the only permissible reason to eat is physical hunger and eating in response to anything apart from hunger cues is wrong. Hannah, Ali and Mimi are here to call B.S. on this harmful rhetoric and help to support you in your journey of learning to cope with your emotions while remembering there are no conditions on “unconditional permission”. Make sure to head over to the @eatcakepod Instagram account Thursdays at 3pm PST for a live support "Snack Time & Chill"- a chance for a supported snack at a physical distance, to ask your nutrition questions and have some laughs along the way. In this week's episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating principle #6: Feel Your Fullness. They are joined once again by Certified Body Trust provider and registered dietitian Aaron Flores. Aaron joined Hannah and Ali last season on one of their most popular episodes about body trust so they knew they had to have him back again. Aaron has worked in eating disorders in a variety of settings with a focus on Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size where he helps individuals make peace with food and develop body-positive behaviors so there was no better topic to bring him back for then answering all your listener questions on fullness. Does fullness lead to weight gain? Is it okay to feel fullness? How do I stop the guilt and shame I feel with fullness? What does fullness actually feel like? How do I learn about fullness when I have always been a member of the clean plate club? Will fullness cues become more tolerable over time? Why is it that I always feel full as soon as I eat? Diet culture tries to reduce Intuitive Eating to simply the “eat when you're hungry, stop when you are full” diet but the connection to our body is SO much more than that. The purpose of Intuitive Eating is to connect body, mind and the food we eat which means learning to allow and respect the sensations that come with fullness. In this week's episode Hannah, Ali and Aaron will start you on the path towards using this sixth principle of Intuitive Eating to give you permission to truly feel your fullness while tuning into and trusting your body. Make sure to head over to the @eatcakepod Instagram account Thursdays at 3pm PST for a live support "Snack Time & Chill"- a chance for a supported snack at a physical distance, to ask your nutrition questions and have some laughs along the way. In this week's episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating principle #5: Discover the Satisfaction Factor. They are joined by registered dietitian and certified intuitive eating counselor Kathleen Meehan. Kathleen is passionate about satisfying food and respectful care for all bodies, and helps people reconnect to their needs through curiosity and a practice of non-judgmental awareness so she was the perfect guest to answer all your listener questions about satisfaction. How do you reconnect with pleasure in eating when you've lived your whole life according to food rules? How do you know you're satisfied with a meal? What do you look for and where do I start to connect to satisfaction? What if the only foods that satisfied you were high in sugar and fat or fast food? How can I be certain that if I let myself be satisfied I won't eat forever and ever? Is it true sweeteners make you more hungry and you'll end up eating more? The idea of truly allowing satisfaction can be a tricky one as diet culture has co-opted this concept once again with fear and anti-fat bias. Diet culture wants us to believe that adding pleasure or satisfaction is indulgence but Hannah, Ali and Kathleen are here to tell you this important principle is possible for all. This episode will give you all the goods on this fifth Intuitive Eating principle and be sure to leave you feeling satisfied! Make sure to head over to the @eatcakepod Instagram account Thursdays at 3pm PST for a live support "Snack Time & Chill"- a chance for a supported snack at a physical distance, to ask your nutrition questions and have some laughs along the way. In this week's episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating principle #4: Challenge the Food Police. They are joined by registered dietitian Shana Spence and the self proclaimed “eat anything dietitian”. Shana's philosophy is that life is complicated enough, and there shouldn't be a reason to restrict yourself with the food you eat, which made her the perfect guest to help Hannah and Ali answer all your listener questions about challenging food rules. How do I manage comments from coworkers while I am working on freedom from food rules? How can I eat things that feel good for me and don't follow any rules, without having all the guilt? How do you support someone in your life who eats mostly “junk” and fast food? Is there a way to help someone eat more “healthy”? How do I stop the nagging rules I have learned from dieting and my fitness pal from occupying my thoughts and influencing my choices? Will these food rules ever go away? When it comes to the choices we make around food, the Food Police and diet culture are never shy to tell us what's wrong, what's right, what's good, what's bad and tells us how to feel about the food we like to eat. Even if those messages are often conflicting, the Food Police adds guilt and shame to food choices and implies that the morality of food has something to do with who we are as people. Well the Food Police has got to go! Join Hannah, Ali and Shana as they take the B.S. out of these food rules and shut the Food Police up once and for all! In this week's episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating principle #3: Make Peace with Food. They are joined by registered dietitian Alissa Rumsey, a nutrition therapist, certified intuitive eating counselor, and the author of Unapologetic Eating: Make Peace With Food and Transform Your Life. Given the title of her book and her expertise in advocating for women to reclaim the space to eat and live unapologetically, Alissa was the perfect person to help answer all your questions about making peace with food. What happens if you can't trust yourself to have certain foods in the house? Why is it that I'm still so freaked out about bingeing if I'm eating consistently throughout the day? What does it really mean to have “unconditional permission” to eat all food”? Would you say eating fast food every single day because you “feel like it” is intuitive eating? Does unconditional permission ever cross a line that isn't healthy anymore? How do I begin to start practicing food freedom when the idea of incorporating so many previously off limits foods terrifies me? Making peace with food sounds great in theory but often leaves people stuck in the “how” when their fears come up. Diet culture loves to reinforce the rules and fears around what to eat. In this week's episode, Hannah, Ali and Alissa go step by step into this important third principle- what it is and how to start making peace with food. Make sure to head over to the @eatcakepod Instagram account Thursdays at 3pm PST for a live support "Snack Time & Chill"- a chance for a supported snack at a physical distance, to ask your nutrition questions and have some laughs along the way. In this week's episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating principle #2: Honor Your Hunger. They are joined by a dietitian who needs NO introduction- the one, the only Christy Harrison. Christy is an anti-diet registered dietitian nutritionist, certified intuitive eating counselor, certified eating disorders registered dietitian, and journalist. She's the author of Anti Diet (with a 2nd book on the way in 2023!) and is the host of Food Psych, a podcast about Intuitive Eating, Health at Every Size and body liberation. It was a no-brainer that Christy was the perfect guest to unpack all your listener questions about hunger. What is “normal” hunger? What if I don't feel hunger cues- can I still practice Intuitive Eating? Is it wrong to eat if I don't feel hungry? Is it common to have insatiable hunger? How can you honor your hunger and not be totally out of control with food? Why do I get more hungry the more I eat? Why does my hunger seem to change from being not hungry at all to ravenously hungry in an instant? Diet culture has managed to co-opt intuitive eating and turn it into the “hunger and fullness diet”. Hannah and Ali knew they needed the best of the best to call BS on diet culture and help their listeners understand the second principle of intuitive eating: honoring your hunger. This is an episode will want to listen to loud and on repeat! In this week's episode Hannah and Ali talk all things Hannah and Ali. The Let Us Eat Cake Podcast started with the intention of taking the BS out of the health and wellness industry and providing evidence-based nutrition information in a world where the messages are to fear food and your body. They named the podcast “Let Us Eat Cake” for a reason. They wanted their listeners to know even as eating disorder dietitians they still get messages from diet culture telling them what to do, how to eat and who to look like. This week Hannah and Ali take listener questions all about their lived experience with food, body image and how they navigate weight stigma in health care. Why did they become dietitians? Why did they choose to work in eating disorders? What are their biggest challenges with meal planning and nutrition? How do they navigate food preferences, beliefs and maybe even diet culture in dating or in a relationship? Have they ever wanted to lose weight or change their body? How does a Health At Every Size dietitian experience body dissatisfaction and what advice would they give to someone struggling with body image? There was no topic off limits and Hannah and Ali kept it real. They want you to know that they are not immune to the impacts of diet culture AND that there is another way to live- one that supports and respects the body for all it can do and the experiences it can bring. Buckle up for this special final episode of Season 4 all about the Let's Eat Girls ;) P.S. In this week's episode Hannah and Ali talk all things movement for health. In a world where everyone believes they are a fitness expert especially when it comes to exercise for weight loss, Hannah and Ali knew they had to bring in physical therapist Dr. Lisa Folden. Lisa brings her own experience shifting her relationship with exercise away from a focus on weight loss to embracing her body and the principles of Health at Every Size which makes her the perfect person to help answer all your questions on movement for health. How can I create a balanced relationship with exercise when I normally become obsessed? How does exercise improve your health if weight loss isn't a goal? Isn't it true weight loss can help improve joint pain? How do I manage chronic pain without stretching and movement if I've been recommended to rest because of an eating disorder? Exercise can be an important way to connect to your body, to improve mood, help with sleep quality and improve some markers of physical health. It is not mandatory nor is it a requirement of living a happy, healthy life. Hannah, Ali and Lisa come together this week to help support you in developing a relationship with exercise that is mindful, happy and joyful...if you choose! In this week's episode Hannah and Ali talk all things ADHD. They are joined by Registered Dietitian, anti-diet therapist and Certified Body Trust ® Provider Aleta Storch from @the_adhd_rd to answer all your listener questions on navigating ADHD as an adult living in a diet-culture world. Aleta brings her lived experience of having ADHD and having recovered from an eating disorder to help our listener's navigate this complicated topic. How can I develop a better awareness of my hunger signals when my medication suppresses my appetite? Is eating intuitively possible for someone with ADHD? How do I manage planning and preparing food when my executive function, energy or motivation is low? How do I practice having self compassion for my body in the same way that I have self compassion for my neurodiversity? Are there resources for people who want to treat their ADHD and eating disorder simultaneously? Diet culture tries to tell us that the only permissible reason to eat is connection to a hunger cue but the reality is for folks with ADHD these cues are not always clear or accessible. In this week's episode, Aleta uses her encouraging approach to make eating disorder recovery feel possible for neurodivergent folks and together Hannah, Ali and Aleta bring tips, tools and guidance to make recovery accessible to all! In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things the gut brain connection. They are joined by gut health specialist and Registered Dietitian Dr. Heather Finley. Now we know dietitians love to talk about poop but when it comes to the complicated relationship between emotions and digestive symptoms, Hannah and Ali knew they needed to bring in an expert. Heather has made a career of helping individuals understand their symptoms and eat in a way that feels good while preventing their symptoms from coming back so she was the perfect person to answer your questions on the gut. Is it true that IBS is all in my head? How do I increase my intake to support recovery from restrictive eating when variety causes pain and discomfort? Is it okay to just keep eating the foods that make my gut feel okay, or do I just suck it up and accept I’ll be in pain? What is the difference between leaky gut, SIBO and IBS? What foods do I need to avoid, and is there also a connection between leaky gut and mental health? What is Migrating Motor Complex and how do I manage recommendations to eat less frequently with blood sugar control? The acronyms alone related to gut health are enough to leave you confused and unsure how to proceed let alone trying to navigate through all the noise diet culture adds into the mix. Heather, Hannah and Ali are here to help you understand your gut and its connection with your brain while giving you clear steps to improve your relationship with food, digestion and your poop! In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things the diet-free revolution. They are joined by clinical psychologist and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist-Supervisor Alexis Conason. Alexis gave Hannah and Ali a sneak peak at her new book “The Diet-Free Revolution: 10 steps to free yourself from the diet cycle with mindful eating and radical self acceptance” and once they read it they knew she was the PERFECT person to answer these listener questions: How do you manage feelings of guilt and shame that come up when you allow yourself to eat foods you enjoy? How do I know the differences between food preferences and disordered eating beliefs? How can I implement mindfulness strategies with eating when I’ve always used busyness to avoid food? How can meditation improve your relationship with food? We spend a lot of time identifying the problems within diet culture and the negative impact on our relationships with food and our bodies but what we don’t always talk about are the next steps. In this episode Hannah, Ali and Alexis will give you a how-to guide for getting started on breaking free from the grip of diet culture and living a life of food freedom. In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things diabetes. They are joined by world renowned diabetes care and education specialist Registered Dietitian Megrette Fletcher. Megrette brings over 25 years experience working in diabetes and chronic illness as a champion and advocate for anti-diet, weight inclusive diabetes care. Our listener questions this week include: Do I need to watch my weight and food choices to prevent diabetes? Can people give themselves type 2 diabetes by eating poorly, being fat and eating too much sugar? Do you need to calculate your carbohydrate intake to the gram to manage your diabetes? What’s the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes? Is it true that if I lose weight I can reverse my pre-diabetes? Can you eat intuitively and manage your blood sugars? Diabetes care and education can be deeply rooted in diet culture and weight stigma, which often leave those impacted by diabetes believing their body is the problem and that it is their responsibility to fix themselves. Megrette helps bust this myth, and shows how fat-phobia, weight stigma, and weight bias perpetuate trauma and contribute to health inequity in diabetes care. In this episode, Hannah, Ali and Megrette will take all the B.S. out of diabetes messaging and show that all bodies are worthy of respect, care and support. You’ll leave this episode knowing that no matter the person or the chronic illness, nobody’s body is a PROBLEM and that the principles of intuitive eating can apply to all! That sounds pretty darn good to us! In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things weight and eating disorders. They are joined by the incredible eating disorders therapist Jennifer Rollin. Jennifer uses both her lived experience of overcoming an eating disorder, paired with her professional expertise of being a world renowned therapist, to help people believe eating disorder recovery is possible AND worth it. This week’s listener questions focus on the fears associated with gaining weight in eating disorder recovery. Is it okay to keep my weight at a place where I don’t hate myself and feel so uncomfortable in my body? Do you have to completely give up control of your weight if you want to recover from an eating disorder? How do I improve my body image so I don’t relapse into my eating disorder? Do I need to stop weighing myself to completely recover? What if the distress from gaining weight is worse than distress from an eating disorder? How do I manage other people’s expectations of my recovery, if I don’t feel ready for it yet? Eating disorders and eating disorder recovery is complicated... especially with the anti-fat bias that diet culture has created in the world. Hannah, Ali and Jennifer know one podcast episode (or two- make sure to check out the one about eating disorders as well!) is not going to be a magic cure but they do know that a life without the eating disorder can feel magical. The theme of this episode is that recovery IS possible and Hannah, Ali and Jennifer KNOW every listener can find the freedom to make their life sparkle. In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things body trust. They are joined by Health at Every Size Registered Dietitian and Certified Body Trust ® Provider Aaron Flores to tackle your questions about how to make peace with and trust your body. Hannah and Ali have been following Aaron’s message on Instagram (@aaronfloresrdn) for years and have always admired the effortless balance of wisdom and empathy he brings to his followers so they were THRILLED when he agreed to share his message with the Let Us Eat Cake community. The questions you pitched his way were not easy but there is no surprise Aaron hit them out of the park. How can I trust my body if I gain weight when I eat whatever I want? Why do we need to trust hunger and not fullness cues in eating disorder recovery? How do you trust your body is at an ideal or natural weight? Is there a way you can eat and make food choices to feel more confident in your body, but also not subscribe to diet culture? With summer approaching and lockdown (hopefully) ending soon, do you have any tips to increase comfort seeing friends in person in a body that has changed? The idea of body trust can feel so daunting that it’s hard to know where to even begin. In this week’s episode Hannah, Ali and Aaron give tangible tips and steps to get started repairing your relationship with your body today. This episode is an absolute home run!! In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things processed foods. They are joined by the delightful Registered Dietitian and founder of The Wellful, Brenna O’Malley. Brenna specializes in helping people find freedom from diet culture, food guilt and being tied to the scale so that they can do the things in life they really love. Together we dig into your questions about processed foods, health and intuitive eating. Do food companies process foods to make them addictive? How can we say “all foods fit” when clearly there are differences between processed and whole foods? Should you avoid foods where you can’t pronounce items on the ingredient list? Do you need to be worried about protein powders with artificial ingredients and additives? Are the calories in processed foods different than those in natural foods? Do processed foods have more health risks associated with them than whole ingredients? We know diet culture loves to reduce our relationship with food down to morality: is the choice good or bad, right or wrong, healthy or unhealthy… but as Brenna likes to say “guilt is NOT an ingredient” and there is so much more to our relationship with food than this narrow black or white view. In fact, in this episode Hannah, Ali and Brenna will show that health is about so much more than eating for nutrient value alone. Don’t worry, as always they provide the science and evidence to help you feel free to eat the rainbow! (Skittles pun intended ;)) Make sure to head over to the @eatcakepod Instagram account Monday-Friday at 3pm PST for a live support "Snack Time & Chill"- a chance for a supported snack at a physical distance, to ask your nutrition questions and have some laughs along the way. In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things mindful eating. They are joined by the wonderful and insightful Registered Dietitian and certified intuitive eating counselor Vincci Tsui. Vincci is a former bariatric surgery dietitian turned body liberation advocate and author of The Mindful Eating Workbook: Simple Practices for Nurturing a Positive Relationship with Food. Vincci’s unique experience practicing in a weight loss clinic before finding her place as an expert in coaching clients with intuitive eating, mindfulness and rejecting diet culture makes her the perfect person to answer all your questions about mindful eating. What exactly IS mindful eating? What do we use it for? How much time should you allow yourself to eat so that you can eat mindfully? What kind of strategies should you practice to make meals more satisfying? Is it bad to have distractions like TV or your phone while you’re eating? How do you tell the difference between emotional hunger and physical hunger? Diet culture has tried to corrupt mindful eating as a diet trick to limit our intake and add more rules. In this week’s episode, Hannah, Ali and Vincci call diet culture’s bluff, and help you do the opposite! This episode gives you the skills so that you can be present in the moment, remove judgement and connect with curiosity so that you can truly enjoy and be satisfied with food. In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things fat positivity. Understanding how important it is to listen and learn from those in the fat positive community, Hannah and Ali asked the fabulous Tash Nigindi from @thethicknutritionist to join this episode. Tash is a non-diet nutritionist, body supportive Zumba instructor and a former crash dieter who uses her story with recovering from diet culture and embracing her body to answer all your questions on social media, race and reclaiming the word fat. Do social media filters perpetuate unrealistic beauty standards? Is calling someone fat an insult? Are the BMI cutoffs rooted in racism? Can you be healthy if your body is outside the normal BMI range? There was no better collab than bringing on the sassy, hilarious fellow Canadian Tash Nigindi to tackle this topic. There were lightbulb moments and of course a ton of laughs as Tash takes a one, two punch to diet culture and dances with self-acceptance all over this episode. In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things ob*sity. They have the honor of having Dr. Nathasha Larmie from @fatdoctorUK join them for this dynamic episode to answer all your questions about ob*sity and chronic disease. Dr. Larmie uses her personal story to illustrate the impact of weight cycling and the pressures health care providers and patients feel when they are told their weight or health condition is a personal problem to fix. As a Health At Every Size aligned and weight-inclusive GP with over 20 years of medical experience, there was no better guest to help Hannah and Ali cut through the B.S. regarding ob*sity, weight stigma, anti-fat bias and chronic disease. Isn’t ob*sity a significant risk for several common and serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes and osteoarthritis? Why do you censor the word ob*sity? Doesn’t classifying ob*sity as a disease enable more people to get help, resources and support so they can be healthier? Does weight-inclusive care protect people’s emotional health, but worsen their physical health? What is “disease of adipose tissue dysfunction” and does body fat cause disease? This episode had Hannah and Ali fist pumping and doing a little dance as Dr. Larmie challenges weight-focused care and drops truth bomb after truth bomb. Trust us, this is an episode you must listen to - it’s the doctor’s order! In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things gender. In recognizing this is a topic beyond their lived experience and expertise, Hannah and Ali asked the incomparable James Rose to join them for this important conversation. James does it all - they are a non-binary New York City based actor, Health at Every Size Personal Trainer, trauma-informed yoga teacher, co-host of the @Full.Soul.Nutrition Podcast and the perfect person to answer all your questions on gender. What’s the difference between gender dysphoria and body dysmorphia? Do eating disorders show up differently for trans folks? Is it true that there is a double stand in how we approach disordered eating and eating disorders for different genders? How do you navigate same gender relationships when you’re struggling with comparing your bodies to each other? What is the most inclusive way to understand gender, sex and sexuality? James Rose has the most incredible ability to inform and enlighten using their lived experience while making you feel like you’re having the best chat with your BFF. In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things orthorexia. To tackle this topic they head to the land down under and chat with the amazing HAES nutritionist Maddie Deakin (thank you modern technology!). At this point most of the Let Us Eat Cake Podcast listeners would agree that fad diets do not work and can understand why diet culture is so toxic, but the wellness industry can be so much sneakier. The idea of what is “healthy” or “unhealthy” is complicated and Hannah, Ali and Maddie answer questions about how to pursue wellness without it being an obsession and making you unhealthy in the process. Do you feel a lot of pressure to look and eat a certain way because you’re a nutrition expert? What’s wrong with only wanting to eat healthy, whole and natural foods? What’s Intuitive Fasting, and does it follow the same principles as Intuitive Eating? The wellness industry is often described as a wolf in sheep’s clothing because it’s much more subtle in how it moralizes food and undermines our ability to trust our bodies. In this week’s episode Hannah, Ali and Maddie pull the wool off of the world’s eyes and expose how the wellness industry messages aren’t backed by science, can be full of BS and don’t have our best interest in mind. Emma is the ultimate bad ass: she is a queer, non-diet, fat-positive dietitian, a teaching assistant at Harvard Extension School, a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and the PERFECT person to answer all your questions about Health at Every Size. Does health at every size mean healthy at every size? Why does BMI get used in health care if it isn’t actually accurate or reliable? Is “Thin on the Outside Fat Inside” (TOFI) a real thing? Can you believe in fat positivity and still want to be thin? If you have listened to any episodes of the Let Us Eat Cake Podcast in the last year you have heard Hannah and Ali talk about Health at Every Size many times, but maybe you aren’t exactly clear on what it means or how it can even be possible with the messaging diet culture shoves in our faces. The hilarious Registered Dietitian Andy De Santis from @andytherd join Hannah and Ali to answer all your most buzzed about questions on caffeine and coffee. How much is too much coffee? Is it better if I spread my coffee intake out throughout the day vs have them all at once? When’s the latest in the day I can drink coffee and not be kept up all night? Is it true that caffeine can help you lose weight? Does caffeine speed up your metabolism? What’s the deal with caffeine and adrenal fatigue? Does this impact weight gain or sugar cravings? In addition to being Nutrition Month, March is also Caffeine Awareness Month- a month dedicated to helping North American’s understand their caffeine intake and allow individuals to consume caffeine in a safe and effective way. Whether you are a caffiend or just enjoy the occasional matcha, there is a lot of information about whether caffeine is good or bad, right or wrong, can be used for weight loss or the cause of weight gain and like most things in the media diet culture has happily contributed to this topic. This week Hannah, Ali and Andy are here to shed some science-based light on the topic of caffeine so whether you start your day with a green tea, enjoy an afternoon cold brew or are a regular drinker of nature’s bean water- you will be armed with the facts to consume caffeine in a safe way. Make sure to head over to the @eatcakepod Instagram account Monday-Friday at 3pm PST for a live support "Snack Time & Chill"- a chance for a supported snack at a physical distance, to ask your nutrition questions and have some laughs along the way. In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things PCOS. These are four little letters that carry A LOT of weight stigma and misinformation. This is a topic so important that Hannah and Ali had to bring in the ultimate expert, Julie Duffy Dillon to tackle these questions. Julie’s work as a Registered Dietitian and PCOS clinician has helped hundreds of clients find freedom from diet rules while helping them find peace from the painful symptoms of PCOS. To start off Julie breaks down what the heck Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) even is. Is it possible to intuitively eat and manage your PCOS at the same time? How do you eat to reduce inflammation? Is cutting out gluten, dairy and processed foods a good place to start for PCOS and inflammation management? Do I need to lose weight to increase my fertility with PCOS? Are there ways to manage PCOS and increase my chances at fertility if weight loss is impossible? It should come as no surprise that diet culture has wrapped its hands around PCOS and is leading people to believe their bodies and their choices are to blame. This week’s episode cuts through these lies, will be worth a second and a third listen… but here’s the bottom line: Your body is not the problem, diet culture is. In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things radical belonging. They are honored to be joined by the esteemed Dr. Lindo Bacon to discuss their new book “Radical Belonging: How to Survive and Thrive in an Unjust World (While Transforming It for the Better)”. Lindo not only helps us understand the science behind coping strategies and the harm our bodies experience when being marginalized, but uses their own lived experience with gender identity to bring these concepts to life and ultimately highlight our common need for belonging. Together, Hannah, Ali and Lindo answer listener questions about how to break free from diet culture when it seems like controlling your weight is your only way to find belonging. Where do you start with recovery when your eating disorder feels like your best friend? What if people treat you better when you lose weight? How do you handle the trauma of weight stigma if weight loss isn’t an option? We live in a world that tells you that in order to find belonging, we must conform to society’s impossible standards and ideals. Together with THE Dr. Lindo Bacon, Hannah and Ali bring you an episode which explores intersectionality, authenticity and the hope that all people are able to experience true belonging. Family Therapist Rachel Coleman and Registered Dietitian Tina LaBoy use evidence-based science and their own unique experiences to normalize all things motherhood and changing bodies postpartum so they were the perfect guests to help answer all your listener questions. How long does it take to get back to your pre-pregnancy body? Does breastfeeding help with weight loss? How do you eat healthy and exercise when you’re exhausted, stressed and always busy? In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things pregnancy. No, this isn’t a pregnancy announcement and since neither Hannah or Ali have any lived experience with pregnancy they asked their dear friend and mama-to-be, the incredible Registered Dietitian Jenna Werner to join them for this episode. Jenna uses her passion for nutrition, her lens as an anti-diet dietitian and her own experiences navigating a changing pregnancy body to help answer these listener questions. What do I do when I can’t even look at a vegetable during pregnancy? How do I balance the need to increase my protein and calcium intake when I don’t feel like eating anything apart from animal crackers? Any advice on how to tolerate the changes to my body without returning to my old habits of controlling food? Is it true that you should watch your carbohydrate intake during pregnancy to avoid gestational diabetes and not gain too much weight? Is “eating for two” really a thing? Grab your pickles and your peanut butter and tune in for another awesome episode. Even pregnancy isn’t free from the influence of diet culture and Hannah, Ali and Jenna are here to kick that BS out of the delivery room. Is there actually a connection between what goes on in your gut and your energy levels or mental health? How do I manage a diet where I am constipated on one end and poop my pants on the other? In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things set point. Talking about letting go of controlling your weight can bring up a lot of thoughts, feelings and fears, and we knew there was no better expert to answer your questions than Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian and fellow anti-diet crusader Haley Goodrich. What the heck is set point theory? How do you even know if you’re at your set point? Why is it so bad to keep your weight stable through diet and exercise if you have a normal BMI? Is your highest weight your set point? If I lose fat and gain muscle, and stay at this same weight, will I still be at my set point? Listen, we get that trusting your body can feel overwhelming and scary, so we’re here to give you the facts, encouragement and reassurance you may need to ditch the scale. Hannah and Ali could not be more thrilled to have the impeccable Haley Goodrich on the episode to drown out the fat fearing, diet culture noise and impart her wisdom for all. In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things weight loss for chronic illness. The incredible Anna Sweeney joins the conversation and uses her signature no nonsense approach and her lived experience as a disabled dietitian to answer your most pressing questions about chronic illness. Is it okay to pursue weight loss if the goal is to improve my chronic illness? A health practitioner has told me to lose 5% of my body weight- how do I do that as a busy mom? Should I avoid gluten, sugar, dairy and processed foods if I have chronic fatigue? Do healthy food and exercise prevent diabetes, cancer, heart disease and more? Isn’t it true that food is medicine? Struggling with chronic illness can be confusing and scary, and it makes sense to have questions. Spoiler alert: weight loss and dieting are not the answer. Hannah, Ali and Anna will say it loud and say it proud- there is no body size that is exempt from chronic illness and there are no illnesses found exclusively in larger bodies. The wellness industry wants us to blame our bodies and this week’s episode is a one, two punch to knock out that message once and for all. In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things meal planning. January is here and with the New Year comes the NOISE of diet culture telling us what, when and how to eat. There is no better person to help drown out that chatter and answer your questions about starting the New Year off right than Registered Dietitian Lindsay Pleskot. Lindsay is the creator of the Make Food Feel Good Again and the 321 Method programs designed to provide you the tools to successfully plan, prep and eat meals with ease. You asked, Hannah, Ali and Lindsay answered: Meal planning feels so overwhelming, where do I start? How do I prevent meal prep burnout? Is it possible to meal plan and eat intuitively? How do I know if a meal is healthy without following diet rules? Dieting brings rules, rigidity and restrictions which no one has time for in 2021. In this week's episode Hannah and Ali talk all things fitness. 'Tis the season for diet culture to tell you your body is wrong, so Hannah and Ali team up with body positive, certified personal trainer Kira Onysko and answer your fitness questions. How do I deal with friends and family talking about burning off their Christmas indulgences? How do I reintroduce exercise into my life when it has been obsessive or harmful in the past? How do I incorporate more movement into my lifestyle if I don't enjoy the typical ways to exercise? We have barely rested our heads after Christmas Day and the diet culture machine wants to make sure we have a plan to make up for the "mistakes" we have made. If 2020 has taught us anything it is that nothing is predictable... except for diet culture which obviously hasn’t read the memo, and keeps dishing out the same BS. Diet culture is a basic b and Hannah and Ali are excited to have Kira join this episode to give us all the permission we need to leave shame based exercise in the past. In this week's episode Hannah and Ali talk all things intuitive eating… again! There were so many incredible questions on the topic of intuitive eating that Hannah and Ali had to record two episodes. This week they invited their friend, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and Registered Dietitian Claire Chewning to help them out! Is intuitive eating just another fad diet? Isn’t it important to only eat certain foods in moderation? Isn’t it unhealthy to have limitless amounts of certain foods, especially ones with preservatives or super-processing? If I were to start intuitive eating tomorrow what should my first steps be? Understanding and practicing all the intuitive eating principles is necessary to find food freedom, experience joy and pleasure with eating, and to ultimately break up with the limiting beliefs of diet culture. In another special episode, Hannah and Ali continue to talk all things coronavirus. The many months of physical distancing have continued to impact the way people feel about food and their bodies, and the pressures of diet culture remain relentless. Are people with anorexia and eating disorders at higher risk for infection? Is it true that “obesity” is one of the greatest risk factors for COVID-19 hospitalizations and critical illness? As restrictions begin to be lifted in some areas how do I cope with a body that may have changed during the pandemic? And if restrictions haven’t been lifted in my area, how do I deal with the anxiety of exercising less and eating differently? What are some practical ways I can distract or occupy my time without being stuck in the extremes that come with diet culture? Hannah and Ali head to the literature to give you the most up-to-date facts, and give you practical tips to social distance from all the diet culture B.S. Hannah and Ali get together for a bonus episode to tackle the questions coming up about food, nutrition and health during this pandemic. Are there any foods that can prevent or cure COVID-19? How do I handle the stress of these food shortages, especially when I can’t go to the store often or buy what’s normally on my list? Are canned, frozen or dried foods less healthy than fresh foods? How do I manage the fear of weight gain when my exercise schedule is disrupted and I have constant access to food? How do you explain your eating disorder to your family and friends? How do you face the scale or approach intuitive eating if you’ve had a history of an eating disorder? February 1-7 is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. If any of the information in this episode is relevant to you, know that there is no such thing as looking like you have an eating disorder. Eating disorders do not discriminate; they are severe and far reaching, and affect people of all ages, cultures, genders, socioeconomic status and of ALL weights and shapes. Early access to support is one of the most predictive factors in finding a healthy relationship with food and your body. Unfortunately the stigma associated with this illness often prevents people from accessing the supports they need. This has to stop. Eating disorders can’t afford to wait. Hannah & Ali are here in this special final episode of season 4 to let you know that you are worthy of support, you are deserving of care, and you are not alone. If you or someone you know is struggling with your relationship with food, your body or exercise, the first step is asking someone you trust for help. Going to your GP or a trusted healthcare professional is a great place to start.
