PCOS and managing any health condition that calls for dietary changes can be really challenging when you're also trying to stay off diets and heal your relationship with food.   My guest today is a fellow non-diet dietitian. Julie Duffy Dillon is a Registered Dietitian and Host of Find Your Food Voice®, a popular long running nutrition podcast. Through speaking and writing, she helps people with a complicated relationship with food strategize how to remove the shame and blame dumped on them from the diet industry. Her work has been featured on TLC and in the New York Times, Outside Magazine, Shape and other outlets. She is the author of the book, Find Your Food Voice.   We cover a lot of ground in this conversation - including what it's like coming up as a dietitian in the medical field that very much subscribes to a weight-centric model of care, and we both spilled some tea about the inner reckonings we had that shook us and caused us to change the path we were on in our careers.    We also talked about emotional eating - Julie has a hot take on this that you don't want to miss.    Julie shares some great strategies for how to navigate health conditions like PCOS, HTN, diabetes, IBS, high chol, and things like that without getting sucked back into dieting.    Make sure you listen towards the end for the part where Julie talks about the concept of “finding your food voice” which is such a cool concept that is going to help you to silence diet culture and your inner critic as you are learning to trust yourself with food.    As you can tell, this is an incredible conversation, so pop in your ear buds, push play and get ready to be inspired!   Episode Highlights   -Why Julie bailed on the nutrition class she was teaching 5 minutes into it and almost got fired. -How chronic illnesses like PCOS, diabetes, high blood pressure, IBS, and high cholesterol impact our relationship with food. -PCOS and what mainstream medical culture gets wrong about it. -Finding your “food voice” and how this will help you make peace with food.   Resources Mentioned   - Connect with Julie Duffy Dillon on social media @FoodVoiceRD - Grab a copy of Julie's book Find Your Food Voice - Julie Duffy Dillon's website   Read the full episode show notes here.   Resources for Your Intuitive Eating Journey   Intuitive eating education on the blog Work with Katy Explore the self-paced mini-course Stepping Off The Dieting Rollercoaster     Connect with Katy Harvey   Website: KatyHarvey.net Instagram: @katyharvey.rd Facebook: KatyHarveyRD      Subscribe and Review   Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts   I would be thrilled if you could rate and review my podcast! Have you ever felt like intuitive eating wasn't built for your real-life challenges? You're not alone. This week, I'm joined by registered dietitian, author, and longtime anti-diet advocate Julie Duffy Dillon to unpack how we can care for our health without falling into the trap of diet culture. Julie's new book Find Your Food Voice goes beyond the basics of intuitive eating to address chronic conditions like PCOS, shifting body image, and the messy reality of staying grounded in a weight-obsessed world.   From her early days in clinical dietetics to becoming a leading voice in the weight-inclusive space, Julie shares her evolution—and her bold vision for what's next. Julie brings honesty, insight, and a lot of heart to this conversation. Whether you're a dietitian, someone navigating PCOS, or just trying to untangle your relationship with food, you won't want to miss it.   In this episode, we explore: Why intuitive eating sometimes needs more nuance (especially for PCOS) What to do when clients want weight loss but also want to feel at peace with food How to advocate for yourself in the doctor's office—especially when weight stigma gets in the way The role of GLP-1 medications and how to navigate them without abandoning your values Practical ways to raise kids who reject diet culture and build lasting body trust   Connect with Julie: Website: https://julieduffydillon.com/   Connect with Deanna: Instagram: @dietitiandeanna and @online.entrepreneur.academy Want my help and strategies to have $30, $50 or $100K launches of your online program? Apply to OEA Scale

What did you think of this episode? Send me a text message and let me know! After years of dieting, the advice to "eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full" can feel frustrating and oversimplified-especially if you've been trying to “get” intuitive eating This week, fellow intuitive eating dietitian Julie Duffy Dillon joins me to help us understand some of the common roadblocks that keep us “stuck" and why reconnecting with your body's natural cues takes patience. Most importantly, that healing is possible at any age, size, or health condition. We explore why dieting's pull is so strong and why there's so much value in naming why diets have given you a spark of feeling hopeful or empowered. With intuitive eating, weight gain can feel like failure, but Julie reminds us it's normal for our bodies to change — and why accepting this is key to healing and feeling like you're making progress. Julie also shares insights from her new book, Find Your Food Voice, and encourages us to let go of diet culture so we can focus on healing from the trauma it's caused. If you feel stuck, this conversation is a powerful reminder that you are not the problem in the intuitive eating equation! Connect with Julie The Website: https://julieduffydillon.com/

Join the conversation as they discuss: Timing and Season: Recognize the right timing for pursuing your goals. Giving yourself permission to wait for the right season can lead to better outcomes. Adaptability: From 1:1 practice to group programs, online courses, and eventually a podcast and book, offers change and that's ok. Being open to change and new opportunities can lead to growth and success. Flexibility and willingness to adapt are essential for personal and professional growth. Building a Brand: Online content can play a significant role in building your brand and attracting publishers' attention. Consistency and branding are powerful tools for achieving recognition and opportunities. Financial Considerations: Pursuing your passion, like writing a book, may not always bring immediate financial rewards. Sometimes you need to acknowledge that you may not make much money in a particular season because you believe in the value of your book and the opportunities it could create. Community and Accountability: Find support and accountability through your audience and community. By thinking outside the box (live sessions & coworking with others) you can engage with your audience which helps you stay on track with your writing goals. Remember that success often involves waiting for the right season and being open to change and new opportunities. She now helps people with PCOS burn their diet books, regain the energy to live their life and reclaim their power. Together we will change PCOS health care. "I want you to know that you did not cause your PCOS, and there's no magic bullet waiting for you, so don't believe the hype. What works well, of course because people experience PCOS differently, is going to be different for each individual. As someone who has worked with people for a number of years on this I've had the privilege of seeing people long term, to see what helps and what doesn't. You know, there's some things that will initially help for like 2-3 months, but long term they seem to just make it worse. So if you're ready for the long haul, you need to make sure you're eating enough food. And I think for most people who are socialized as women, we're taught that we don't need to eat that much and really we need to eat a lot more than we think." I ask Julie: What is PCOS? What works and what doesn't work when it comes to managing PCOS? What is the cis-male counterpart to PCOS? What management have you seen work well for people with PCOS? Let's talk about exercise and PCOS: Let's talk about inflammation and PCOS: Let's talk about cannabis and PCOS: How can you rebuild a relationship of trust with your body when you have PCOS? Dear Food, I have had a complicated relationship with you for most of my adult life.  Growing up you were part of celebrations and parties or could serve as comfort during the loss of a loved one.  When I got out on my own, you definitely shifted to comfort as I was in a complicated situation and food seemed to soothe me/make me feel better.  What I did not like was the weight gain that came with all that "comfort".  I got married, joined a commercial weight loss program and lost a significant amount of weight-felt good about myself, others validated me and my efforts.  But it was freaking hard to keep up this new found body that I was in-so many unhealthy habits crept up in an effort to show up on the scale and see what I deemed to be the prized number at the time.  I yo-yo'd over the years, and if we fast forward to now, I have put on weight and weigh more now than I have ever weighed in the past.  I saw a counselor for a few sessions and they introduced me to the book Intuitive Eating, but it never really took off for me.  I love one of the authors, I watched and listened to so many interviews with her, she is fabulous and that laugh is contagious.  I don't know if it was because the counselor was not well versed in Intuitive Eating or if I wasn't ready for it at the time?  I don't know.  But I can tell you that I'm super unhappy in my current state-I've had to repurchase my wardrobe to accommodate my bigger self.  I get frustrated during some workouts as I have to modify some of the moves, but I'm also humbled because I used to do this in the past with no problem.  I love to scrapbook, but do not have many pictures of myself for the past year OR if I do, they are creatively cropped to not show how much I have gained.  How do I balance you?  I've tried restriction in the past or putting limits on myself and that did not go well!  How do I get back to a place where I am comfortable around you and ultimately with myself? How to Love Your Body

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 13, 2021 25:49

Welcome to How to Love Your Body - on today’s episode we are talking about Intuitive Eating on your period or during PMS. That’s right, we are going there today. We have seen many women post about feeling guilty with the cravings and amount of food they eat during PMS or while on their period.  We first want to say we are not experts in this area - if you have irregular cycles, PCOS, endometriosis, etc - this is not a replacement for professional guidance. There are amazing resources you can find which we will link - one of those being an expert in anti diet and PCOS, @foodpeacedietitian - Julie Duffy Dillon.  If you do struggle with something in this area we recommend finding an expert who can help you - especially someone who is anti diet.  That being said if you live with the question - should I be eating this much during PMS or during my period? I feel so hungry! I want to eat all the chocolate! Etc … this is what we re going to address in this episode. This episode is for EVERYONE - just know if you do need extra support in this area to outsource - but also know listening to your body and eating intuitively during your period is what your body wants. IE is just the way you live, it doesn’t need to change when your period comes along, it’s a part of the ebb and flow.  Tips to Intuiting Eating when you feel like you want to EAT ALL THE THINGS during PMS or during your period:  #1. DO IT. EAT. Whatever your body is craving and the amount it’s craving that is what your body needs. The less judgement you have in what you eat and how much you eat, the more likely you will get the amount that feels good to your body. Judgement will cause mental restriction which will lead to overeating and bingeing - of course there is nothing wrong with eating past fullness or bingeing but the more you allow the food, the craving, the desire, the more you’ll be able to listen to your body and eat the amount that feels good.  #2. There are 4 phases during your cycle- this means there is an ebb and flow to what our body is signaling to us - it does not matter so much what the phases are - the point is that if you are craving something on your period that you don’t necessarily crave as much when you aren’t on your period, there is a reason for that. Our body is speaking to us and by listening, without any diet rules, just pure tuning in- We will be able to give our body what it needs and wants. Remind yourself through each phase our body may require something different, we can trust that, and not judge it. If you do not have any concerning issues with your cycle, let your body lead you. If you want to get further educated and take a deeper dive into it all we recommend finding an anti diet expert on menstrual cycles/ etc. If you aren’t interested in that, continue to intuitively eat and allow yourself to ask your body questions without judgement and then answer the signal.  Intuitive Movement on your period:  #3. Our bodies go through different phases and in each phase we may have more or less energy to move. The point is to listen to your body. If it’s asking for rest. REST. If it’s asking for something gentle, do that. If it wants something upbeat and sweaty, do that. The point is that our bodies naturally ebb and flow between our 4 phases so just because you had a really strong/ heart pumping workout one day, doesn’t mean that is what your body needs every single day. There are days when our bodies don’t have as much energy and need to rest - this is why we don’t need to force our movement. It really is about listening to your body and doing what feels good - and what feels good may look very different throughout each month.  Long story short - if you think you need to counteract your cravings or hunger levels during PMS or your period just know that this is not intuitive. Whether the reason is hormonal changes, altered energy levels or emotional reasons, continue listening to your body. This way of life doesn’t change based on the time of the month, it’s a constant. Always listen to AND TRUST your body. We hope you got some insights and permission to listen to your body ALL THE TIME.  If you enjoy our podcast please rate and review wherever you listen, it helps the work of UnDieting get further and be seen by more people. PS - Want to take our Intuitive Eating Quiz? You can do that HERE! Thank you!

In this week’s episode Hannah and Ali talk all things PCOS. These are four little letters that carry A LOT of weight stigma and misinformation. This is a topic so important that Hannah and Ali had to bring in the ultimate expert, Julie Duffy Dillon to tackle these questions. Julie’s work as a Registered Dietitian and PCOS clinician has helped hundreds of clients find freedom from diet rules while helping them find peace from the painful symptoms of PCOS. To start off Julie breaks down what the heck Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) even is. Is it possible to intuitively eat and manage your PCOS at the same time? How do you eat to reduce inflammation? Is cutting out gluten, dairy and processed foods a good place to start for PCOS and inflammation management? Do I need to lose weight to increase my fertility with PCOS? Are there ways to manage PCOS and increase my chances at fertility if weight loss is impossible? It should come as no surprise that diet culture has wrapped its hands around PCOS and is leading people to believe their bodies and their choices are to blame. This week’s episode cuts through these lies, will be worth a second and a third listen… but here’s the bottom line: Your body is not the problem, diet culture is. Dear Food, For probably my entire entire life I have used as a scapegoat to avoid my divided and toxic family life, my fear of relationships and men, and the excuse as to why I can't keep the weight off.  After my brother passed unexpectedly this year and after mindless eating to numb the pain of his absence I seeked out some help from a therapist. I am still in therapy and I was able to unblock myself with the numbness. This is where you came in Food. I was no longer using you as a source of comfort anymore. Alongside this journey I decided to read the Intuitive Eating book that Julie Duffy Dillon put on her must reads syllabus section. I read it slowly and realized even more that you don't really bring me that source of comfort anymore or really the satisfaction. In fact I had face so much without you in just a matter of 3 months. I had to face the reality that my brother is no longer here, that I used you to numb myself to the point where I didn't know what I was feeling, and that I fed myself the wrong foods to keep myself fat so men would leave me alone. I say this because when I have been at a lighter weight I did not feel comfortable at all with the attention. I felt vulnerable in my new body. Fat is all I have ever known. I was a wallflower and invisible to men. Once I wasn't I was back at the binging and the weight crept up, although on a conscious level I was so upset about this.  I know all of this sounds crazy but I had such a huge insight in such a short amount of time. I began to take care of myself, but I am really struggling with something: PCOS. I really want to build a strong and healthy relationship with my body. My body is completely out of balance because I feel it at a cellular level. Because I had gained almost 15 lbs from the loss of my brother my PCOS symptoms came back. I don't weigh myself anymore but I do want to lose some weight so I can get off medication and re-stabilize my hormones. I just feel like all the information out there about nutrition and PCOS is so contradictory. I don't know where to start. I find myself getting into diet mentality and I fight myself mentally constantly, especially lately. I don't feel at peace and this concerns me. I have stopped exercising because of this mental stress too.  I ask you Food, what am I really supposed to do? Am I supposed to be ok with the fact that maybe my PCOS Is always going to wreck havoc on my health? Am I supposed to be ok with being large and constantly fighting to stabilize my hormones. I'm only 26, and I am so fatigued. I really don't care what the scale says anymore, what I want to know is: what exactly am I supposed to do? I honor my hunger but I noticed some days I barely eat. I logically do not think this is ok since I have PCOS. Idk if I can trust my body fully because of the PCOS. Instead of going around in circles, does intuitive eating really work for PCOS? Are carbs really what is making my hormones insane or gain a few extra pounds? I just feel so lost. I want to get out of this. I want to heal my body and my soul. I want to heal my PCOS naturally and I want to be ok with you Food. I just hate how healing PCOS equates to weight loss. I think this may be the issue. I just feel like I am always going to lose when it comes to PCOS.  Sincerely, Lost Cyster.    Show Notes: Julie Dillon RD blog The PCOS + Food Peace Free Roadmap The PCOS + Food Peace Course Link to get latest Food Peace Syllabus. 6 Keys To Food Peace Submit your Dear Food letter here or https://forms.gle/pepKRGPC8JbHLHHn8 Julie on Instagram: Instagram.com/FoodPeaceDietitian Find Eating Disorder Dietitians near you. Julie specializes in helping people with PCOS move away from dieting and rewrite their relationship with food to promote health, and advocate for better (non-weight centric) care.Together, we explore the similarities and differences between HA and PCOS, and why these seem to constantly get mixed up by medical practitioners (http://noperiod.info/HAvsPCOS).We start by defining the classic criteria for PCOS diagnosis (irregular/missing periods, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovaries) and why diagnosis is often loaded with weight and body shaming. We also explore whether "lean PCOS" is in fact PCOS, or just misdiagnosed HA, and how PCOS "symptoms" can be NORMAL side effects of recovery from disordered eating (also see http://noperiod.info/HAvsPCOS2)  and  that it is therefore important in recovery to wait for a year before investigating PCOS as a condition.Julie confirms that the main difference between HA and PCOS is high circulating insulin levels - typical of PCOS. We then explore how the typical "PCOS recovery" recommendations to cut sugar and carbs are not evidence-based and rooted in weight stigma.Find the latest evidence-based PCOS guidelines here (2018).Julie explores her non weight centric steps for PCOS healing and recovery. Nico and Florence notice these are similar to HA recovery: restore a balanced relationship with food and movement, including eating and resting! And, unique to PCOS, finding sustainable ways to lower insulin levels without dieting.Julie reminds Nico and Florence that PCOS and diabetes are typically NOT caused by lifestyle but genetic predispositions, and that preventing weight cycling and healthcare avoidance is key for anyone with PCOS, as well as addressing other symptoms, like sleep & mood disorders. To find out more about Julie Duffy-Dillon's work and non-diet PCOS community, please visit www.juliedillonrd.com or www.pcosbodyliberation.comTo find support in your HA recovery:Get the "No Period. In this episode I talk to Julie Duffy Dillon. Julie is a registered dietitian and food behavior expert who wants to help you enjoy eating again. She combines her specialized nutrition therapy with her training as a mental health counselor to promote food and body peace. Julie owns a North Carolina group nutrition therapy practice helping individuals, families, and health care providers treat and prevent disordered eating and promote positive body image. She is also the host of the weekly podcast, Love Food. You can find out more about her and ways to experience Food Peace at JulieDillonRD.com and find her on Facebook, Instagram (@FoodPeaceDietitian), and Twitter (@EatingPermitRD). Fed up with creating short-term diet plans for patients, Julie began questioning the idea of dieting altogether and decided it was time to take a different approach. This meant going against the mainstream belief that weight loss results in improved health and instead giving her clients permission to feel good in their skin just they way they are right now. Through her Health at Every Size (HAES) and weight neutral approach, Julie helps her clients experience health without dieting. About halfway through our conversation I noted that Julie was referring to some clients as a “person in a larger body” or a “person in a fat body.” Consistent with her approach, Julie believes individuals should not be defined solely by the way their body looks. In an ideal world the word “fat” would be neutral descriptor and the stigma associated with words such as “obese” and “overweight” would be nonexistent. Unfortunately, size discrimination is dominant in our culture, and the word “fat” has a negative association. But, we have the power to change how we use the word. Having fat on your body is not bad. It's not good. It's just what is. Julie emphasizes that this is not something we need to hide from our children either; your child can be fat and beautiful. Fat is not something that needs to be fixed, but rather viewed through a different lens. We need to armor our children with tools to view their body in more positive light, regardless of size, shape, or weight.
