Diets, and an obsession with weight, are so much a part of Western culture that it's hardly surprising our teens can struggle to understand how to eat well. When I researched the topic for episode 9, I discovered that many experts are using mindful - or intuitive - eating to treat patients who develop disordered eating patterns. Indeed, the Intuitive Eating Workbook, which is now in its fourth edition, is recommended on the website of the UK's premier eating disorder charity Beat. I reached out to Elyse Resch who is co-author of that book, because she has a long list of academic and industry accreditations, and decades of experience in dealing with eating issues. Even better, she's created The Intuitive Eating Workbook for Teens to help our kids at one of this vulnerable stage. I'm delighted that she agreed to help us unpick how we are talking with our teens about this tricky subject. CONTACT ELYSE RESCH: elyseresch@gmail.comhttps://elyseresch.com/EResch/DEALING WITG EMOTIONAL EATING:https://www.helpguide.org/articles/diets/emotional-eating.htm THE TEN PRINCIPLES OF INTUITIVE EATING:https://www.intuitiveeating.org/10-principles-of-intuitive-eating/• Reject the Diet Mentality. Throw out the diet books and magazine articles that offer you the false hope of losing weight quickly, easily, and permanently• Honour Your Hunger. Keep your body biologically fed with adequate energy and carbohydrates. Otherwise you can trigger a primal drive to overeat• Make Peace with Food. If you tell yourself that you can't or shouldn't have a particular food, it can lead to intense feelings of deprivation that build into uncontrollable cravings and, often, bingeing. • Challenge the Food Police. Scream a loud no to thoughts in your head that declare you're “good” for eating minimal calories or “bad” because you ate a piece of chocolate cake.• Discover the Satisfaction Factor. When you eat what you really want, in an environment that is inviting, the pleasure you derive will be a powerful force in helping you feel satisfied and content. • Feel Your Fullness. Pause in the middle of eating and ask yourself how the food tastes, and what your current hunger level is. • Cope with Your Emotions. Food won't fix any of these feelings. It may comfort for the short term, distract from the pain, or even numb you. But food won't solve the problem. • Respect Your Body. Accept your genetic blueprint. Just as a person with a shoe size of eight would not expect to realistically squeeze into a size six, it is equally futile (and uncomfortable) to have a similar expectation about body size. • Exercise—Feel the Difference. Shift your focus to how it feels to move your body, rather than the calorie-burning effect of exercise.• Honour Your Health with Gentle Nutrition. Remember that you don't have to eat perfectly to be healthy.Previous episode: https://www.teenagersuntangled.com/parenting-tips-9-how-to-help-your-teens-manage-their-screen-time-and-talking-to-them-about-healthy-eating-without-giving-them-an-eating-disorder/Support the showThanks for listening. Episode #: 83. Principle 8, Respect Your Body.“Accept your genetic blueprint. Just as a person with a shoe size of eight would not expect realistically squeeze into a size six, it is equally as futile (and uncomfortable) to have the same expectations with body size.” This episode has more to do with accepting your blueprint, while wanting to improve on what you have to work with, than accepting a health condition (weight or otherwise) that you don't have to live with. No good can come from hate. Let me say that again, “No Good Can Come From Hate.” I know the reason you are seeking out help or have the desire to lose weight is because you want to change your body but come to it from a different angle. If you have a “I-hate-my-body” mindset you will not want to do good things for yourself. You put off treating yourself better such as getting pretty clothing that fits NOW, eating foods that you enjoy, spending money on things that will help you sleep better and move better. If you take weight loss out of the picture, and decide to do nice things for yourself, you will be respecting not only your physical health but your mental health. This episode is a great way to change your outlook for the new year.Get all my free guidesTake a look at this great courseJoin me on FacebookFollow me on InstagramCheck out PinterestAnd don't forget my book!

Bailey began her running journey at a very young age, competing in track and cross country through high school and into college, at Clemson University. While her college running career only lasted 2 years due to mental health struggles, it ultimately landed her in Boulder, Colorado, where she discovered trail running. We chat about how she overcame a negative atmosphere and began to love running again. She fell in love quickly and spent 2020 chasing competitive FKTs around the Boulder mountains, quickly growing her thirst to return to competition. In 2021, she dove into trail racing and found herself on every US podium she raced at. Come 2022, she was hungry for more and entered the international scene, ultimately placing 5th at Sierre Zinal, second in the Golden Trail World Series Final and 5th overall in the Golden Trail World Series. Bailey has lofty goals for the future, in regards to running and her voice in the community. She is a dedicated coach and an advocate for mental health and women in sport. She currently runs for Nike, and spends her days playing in the mountains above Boulder, preparing for races/travel, coaching, and spending time with family. This week we are talking to one of the co-founders of Intuitive Eating, Elyse Resch! Alongside Evelyn Tribole, Elyse developed and wrote the book Intuitive Eating, which has gained popularity for people who have been burned by diets and want to get back in touch with their body's intuition around food. However, this process is more complicated than it sounds. Elyse answers questions from our community and explains many of the nuances of IE for our listeners. Intuitive Eating: is it a method for weight loss? How does IE work if you don't have reliable hunger and fullness cues? Elyse reveals how she'd change up the principles for a future edition of the book What is “future deprivation”? Stef's favorite principle: Respect Your Body and how it applies to this work What about highly processed foods? How do you get to Gentle Nutrition (and/or Gentle Movement)? Interoception: what is it and how do you develop it? IE is not just instinct! It's “a dynamic interplay of instinct, emotion, and thought.” Different parts of the brain are present to give us different pieces of information. Community Question: What if I binged at night and I'm not hungry in the morning? Will my body think I'm restricting if I don't eat? Community Question: How to say No to food but not in a restrictive way? I feel sad when I have to stop eating Eating without distractions Did Elyse expect IE to get so big? In this week's episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating principle #8: Respect Your Body. To cover this complex topic they are joined by registered dietitian and eating disorders specialist Christyna Johnson. Christyna practices from a person-centered perspective with a social justice lens to help dismantle diet culture which made her the perfect expert to help answer all your questions about respecting your body. How do you overcome the desire to lose weight and be thin, when that's considered to be more desirable in our society? Can people who fall outside of the thin, white ideal benefit from Intuitive Eating? My body is changing as I work through Intuitive Eating and recovery from binge eating- how do I acknowledge where my body is at and shift away from weight loss as a goal? Is this extra weight I've gained as I work on the IE principles really what my body needs, or just a result of overindulging in play food? How do I liberate myself from the negative body image I've developed from thirty years of exposure to diet culture? How can I develop a loving attitude towards my body, whatever its shape, when I've been conditioned to hate every speck of cellulite I see? Coming to a place of neutral respect for your body is a key aspect in healing from diet culture but it can be complicated especially when the idea of loving your body feels far away. Letting go of the thin ideal can be challenging and the process can feel overwhelming which makes this eighth principle an important step in the journey to find body peace and food freedom. In this episode, Hannah, Ali and Christyna use their expertise to help you take the first small steps towards a place of respecting your body for all the wonderful, incredible things it is able to do. The 8th Principle of Intuitive Eating is Respect Your Body. One way to do that is to Accept your Genetic Blueprint. It is futile and uncomfortable to try for years and years to think you should be something different. You are born with your unique DNA that will not deviate so it is time to give it respect instead. Acknowledge what your body has done for you up to this point in your life and what it continues to accomplish everyday! Listen for more about my analogy of DOGS that will help you remember this concept even more. Accept your genetic blueprint. Just as a person with a shoe size of eight would not expect to realistically squeeze into a size six, it is equally futile (and uncomfortable) to have a similar expectation about body size. But mostly, respect your body so you can feel better about who you are. It's hard to reject the diet mentality if you are unrealistic and overly critical of your body size or shape. All bodies deserve dignity.

Episode 12 is a continuation of my summary of the 10 Intuitive Eating principles as outlined in the book, Intuitive Eating, by Elyse Resch & Evelyn Tribole. Here I review Principle #8: Respect Your Body. Living in a diet-obsessed world has normalized speaking negatively about our bodies, disrespecting our bodies, and feeling uncomfortable with giving our bodies praise or accepting a compliment. In this episode I talk about how our genes dictate our body type, ways to have gratitude for our bodies, how to stop body comparison and body-checking, how buying clothes that fit and that we feel good in is a form of body respect and language we can use to start feeling better in the one and only body we have in this life. ------- As mentioned in this episode, I am available for intuitive eating counseling through my group online course, Intuitive Eating Foundations, as well as private online counseling. You can schedule a FREE 20-minute call with me to learn about my intuitive eating services and decide if we're a good fit to work together on your anti-diet journey! Also mentioned in this episode: More To Self Care Than Weight Loss --------- If you have a question you'd like answered on the show or are interested in being interviewed on the show please CONTACT ME!! I'd love to hear from you.

They keep chat pretty light, Leanne has a wonderful presence and likeable personality, super confident and easy to listen to. You’ll hear Leanne discuss her journey with Keto and how she has tweaked it to work for her over the years because we simply aren't all build the same, and that’s ok. Leanne also used to be a raw vegan so she’s made quite the switch, brought her health back and also stopped certain medications. Karen and Leanne have a lot of fun, and discuss travel and bucking the trend of living a conventional life. Enjoy! To know how to eat “right” gets confusing in this diet-obsessed world, so intuitive eating is learning how to eat what is “right for you” . This episode features Angela Prior Intuitive Eating Counselor, LCSW, RYT. We explore the 10 basic principles of Intuitive Eating and how to implement it into your everyday therapy life, so you can enjoy a variety of food without taking the guilt/shame and/or feeling out of control. 1. Reject the Diet Mentality 2. Honor Your Hunger 3. Make Peace With Food 4. Challenge the Food Police 5. Respect Your Fullness 6. Discover Your Satisfaction Factor 7. Honor Your Feelings Without Using Food 8. Respect Your Body 9. Exercise: Feel The Difference 10. Honor Your Health with Gentle Nutrition Book: Intuitive Eating by Evelyn Tribole, MS, RD, and Elyse Resch, MS, RD, CERD More About Our Guest: We are over-the-moon about Angela Prior LCSW, RYT, Intuitive Eating Counselor coming on the podcast to talk about all things intuitive eating and the Health At Every Size movement. Angela is a licensed clinical social worker and a registered yoga teacher as well as an intuitive eating counselor. She trained with Evelyn Tribole, co-author of Intuitive Eating. She has a private practice and helps adults embrace their messy, beautiful feelings and let go of their habits of avoidance through self-compassion and radical acceptance. She has a specialty focus with anxiety, addictions, and eating disorders. Some of things that feed Angela's soul are her furbabies, husband, traveling, yoga, and tacos. . Angela describes Intuitive Eating as essentially hitting the reset button and beginning the process of unlearning what the world of dieting has taught most of us. Picture a baby. They cry when they are hungry and they stop eating when they are full. Toddlers find joy and play around food. There isn't this stress to weigh, count, and analyze the food. That is what Intuitive Eating allows us all to be able to do. To go back to a time in our life before we were "taught" how to eat and simply reconnect with what we all inherently know how to do which is feed our bodies. . . Learning to fuel our bodies in a way that is nurturing and not punishing is so important, yet can be so confusing with all the contradictory nutrition Info and diets that are promoted! Tune into learn more from @angelapriorlcsw! . www.angelaprior.com
Hey guys! We welcome back Arron Daniels this week, Colin's brother, over from Velocity Academy in Edenderry, and we're discussing how he learned to respect his body. He eventually got sick of eating 'Chicken, Rice & Veg'.
Tracy Brown, dietitian and body image coach, joins me to talk about the eighth principle of Intuitive Eating—Respect Your Body. We dive into what it means to respect, versus love (or hate) the shape, size, and feel of your body. Tracy had a unique road to becoming a dietitian, and started doing this work long before the anti-diet movement as we know it today. (Thank you, Tracy!) Mentioned on the show, Tracy's book pick for all women listening: When Women Stop Hating Their Bodies This recording came at a unique time for me–my third trimester of pregnancy—and carries lessons anyone can use during any stage of life. In Episode 309 I discuss: *your body is your Temple, and to have Power in your Life, you MUST have it in your physical body FIRST *how physical Power began with me lifting weights for the first time at the age of 15 *your body is DESIGNED to be physically Powerful, and the benefits will bleed into ALL areas of your Life *how thankful I am to have created Power in my Physical Body and the contrast I am currently experiencing and reminder of this with a boxing injury *that age is NOT a reason for not caring for your body or having Physical Power (I feel better at 48 years old than any other time in my Life) Listen to the latest Women Wanting More episode on iTunes here.
