Vincci is a former bariatric surgery dietitian turned body liberation advocate and author of The Mindful Eating Workbook: Simple Practices for Nurturing a Positive Relationship with Food. Vincci’s unique experience practicing in a weight loss clinic before finding her place as an expert in coaching clients with intuitive eating, mindfulness and rejecting diet culture makes her the perfect person to answer all your questions about mindful eating. What exactly IS mindful eating? What do we use it for? How much time should you allow yourself to eat so that you can eat mindfully? What kind of strategies should you practice to make meals more satisfying? Is it bad to have distractions like TV or your phone while you’re eating? How do you tell the difference between emotional hunger and physical hunger? Diet culture has tried to corrupt mindful eating as a diet trick to limit our intake and add more rules. In this week’s episode, Hannah, Ali and Vincci call diet culture’s bluff, and help you do the opposite! This episode gives you the skills so that you can be present in the moment, remove judgement and connect with curiosity so that you can truly enjoy and be satisfied with food.  Make sure to head over to the @eatcakepod Instagram account Monday-Friday at 3pm PST for a live support "Snack Time & Chill"- a chance for a supported snack at a physical distance, to ask your nutrition questions and have some laughs along the way. The “Myth Busters” Series Today we are busting the age old diet myth that in order to manage your weight it’s a simple math equation of “calories in vs calories out,” or calories expended. The reason this myth is so popular is because it gives people a sense of control. By counting, calculating, tracking, and monitoring: BAM, the solution will be what they desire. The marketers sell the apps, the memberships, the programs by saying “come join us and we will make something complex more simple so you can find control since your relationship with food is confusing and chaotic.” But there are some major flaws in this approach that we unpack in this episode. We review the history of the word “calorie” and it’s origins in the field of industrial agriculture, explain metabolic compensation as well as what to do about food labels. We interview Vincci Tsui, RD @vinccird and she unpacks the science behind why calories work in a lab setting but do not translate to our bodies in simple math! Our bodies are not science experiments and food freedom means letting go of external factors of calorie counting and numbers! On this important episode of The Mindful Dietitian, Fi chats to Safeena Jabar and Gurneet K. Dhami, Dietetic Students and RD’s-to-be based in Canada, we hear; What justice means to Gurneet; from what it is to fit in, to the lack of diversity in dietetics and questioning; why are these conversations being centred now? What justice means to Safeena; from being asked the hard questions, to her lived experience, and understanding; that with our personal privileges, comes power. Gurneet and Safenna step us through the origins, definitions and meaning behind the term; white privilege, and ways privilege can manifest in health care.  ‘Calling in’ Dietitians of Canada; Safeena and Gurneet share how their cowritten statement to Dietitians Canada came about and the current developments brought about by it.  Their hopes for how the statement might start a shift towards racial and ethnical diversity within the dietetic profession. How in response to the statement, extensions of diverse groups and communities have been built and why we need to power groups and movements that are already happening, rather than reinventing the wheel. HAES and Weight Inclusive Practice and the ways in which we are not including race and culture into the framework; Safeena shares her experience finding HAES and weight inclusive practice and her difficulty and discomfort in trying to reconcile HAES with her culture identity. She also shares how a new HAES framework can become more inclusive and applicable to all different types of people. Gurneet shares her experience learning about HAES, the challenge of putting it into practice (as it stands) with a consideration for culture and race and why we need to understand all the intersections at play. She also shares the need to meet clients where they are at to ensure client-centred care and why we need to continue to have these messy and mucky conversations. In finishing up, Safeena and Gurneet graciously offer us additional ways in which we can begin to enhance our practice to ensure it is truly inclusive. SEASON 7 FINALE! Fat activist, author, speaker, and podcaster Victoria Welsby returns to the podcast to discuss the intersection of fatphobia and healthism, why all weight-loss advice is a form of weight stigma, the moralization of different health conditions, the role of thin allies in fat activism, and so much more. Plus, in our new “Ask Food Psych” segment, co-host Vincci Tsui answers a listener question on how the anti-diet and intuitive eating frameworks address health. Victoria Welsby is a world-leading expert on body image and confidence, TEDx speaker and best-selling author. She went from being homeless, abused with self-esteem that was achingly low into the courageous fat activist and change maker she is today. Victoria helps people fall in love with themselves and is dedicated to shifting the way society views fat bodies. Find her online at FierceFatty.com. Vincci Tsui (she/her) is a former bariatric dietitian turned certified intuitive eating counselor and Health At Every Size® advocate. She is the author of The Mindful Eating Workbook: Simple Practices for Nurturing a Positive Relationship with Food, and is the Community and Content Associate for Food Psych Programs. In this episode, Keith sits down with Registered Dietitian Vincci Tsui to discuss intuitive and mindful eating. Vincci encourages us to stop dieting and start building a healthy relationship with food by trusting our intuition to let us know what, when and how much we should eat. She asks us to regard food as morally neutral, neither good nor bad, and to abandon the guilt we feel when we eat certain foods. Mindful eating means bringing our awareness to what we eat, appreciating and enjoying our food and respecting and nurturing our bodies. This episode is brought to you by my courses: PCOS and Food Peace and Dietitians PCOS and Food Peace. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how. This episode's Dear Food letter: Dear Food,   Oh my, I just don't even know where to begin.  When I was around 13 years old my mother told me that I needed to watch out because too much more of you would take me from the regular sizes to the misses sizes - which in that day was more like plus size.  If I ate more of you, which was always intensely scrutinized and monitored by her, than she felt happy with, she would give me a look of disappointment and shame around you and my body set in.  I would sometimes whip up a bowl of cookie dough while she was out of the house for a brief time, scarf you down, and then clean up as fast as possible.  You were associated with shame at home and then freedom when I was out in my car alone.  It was then the roots of "thin means worthy, beautiful and acceptable" and "fat was unsightly, made you worth less, and would negatively affect your life in so many ways from getting a man, to getting a job, to embarrassing your teenagers."  What is so crazy now is that pictures of me still living at home show a healthy, not even chubby, girl.  I do not know what my mother was seeing!  Anyway, so from there I restricted and binged you.  I went from diet fad to diet fad.  Of course, I would get so many compliments from people when they observed my eating less of you, even when I was nearly starving myself.  But those never lasted, I'd always come back to you, so much so that you would make me so sick I'd swear never to binge on you again, which I did.  Then floods of shame and embarrassment and failure would overcome me as I regained all my weight plus some.  My ups and downs with you have cost me so much money Food!  Between all the diets, special ingredients and clothing...oh my...I cannot even imagine how much money I've wasted over these years trying to get to that size where I would be acceptable to my mother and therefore, myself and others.  I was once again failing at keeping weight off from my most recent diet and I started searching podcasts for food related subjects.  I came across your podcast three months ago and was introduced to Intuitive Eating, Diet Culture and Peace with Food for the first time - wow - totally new concepts for me.  I love them and I want to incorporate them into my life.  I so want peace with you and with myself!  I want to accept where I am right now, at this moment!  However, I am discouraged and feeling confused.  As I have given myself freedom with all foods and as I've tried to eat only when hungry and stop when full, a skill I have A LOT of work to do to figure out, I have just gotten fatter and that scares me.  I need to know what is the normal process.  I want to set my expectations of how my newfound relationship with you is going to look.  I feel like as I have said no to more dieting and seeing all food as permissible - this way of doing things is back firing!  Is this how it works? Is my body holding on to everything thinking I'll starve it again?  Does it get worse before getting better?  I would love to know as I want my journey towards loving you to be free and peaceful.  Thanks for keeping me alive Food.  We just need to figure out how this relationship is going to pan out!   Love, Time to DTR (define the relationship) Show Notes: This episode's guest Vincci Tsui The Mindful Eating Workbook Meredith Noble's list of Best Body Positive Instagram Accounts Julie Dillon RD blog Link to subscribe to the Love Food’s Food Peace Syllabus. It's a fluid concept, and very individual. Vincci Tsui joins us to chat about gentle nutrition and intuitive eating! Finding the balance between gentle nutrition and diet mentality can be so hard. Too much of the nutrition information out there is so tainted with diet culture! What even is gentle nutrition? It's less about food rules, and more about what makes our bodies feel good. It's all about our INTENTION! Nutrition is super individual! Your own experience with certain foods is way more important than what the current research says. There are way too many books out there that claim to be non-diet, but still perpetuate diet culture and the thin ideal. It's so hard to escape it! So be careful with the anti-diet media that you consume, and decide for yourself which parts of these books and films are helpful, and which parts are harmful. Rely on your intuition to tell you which is which! It's about what works for YOU! The research may give us some parameters, but we need to rely on our own body cues to figure out what actually works for us. It's literally about experimenting on ourselves. You can incorporate foods that are typically considered "diet foods" without them being about dieting and weight loss. It's about making choices out of self-care! When the intention is different, it makes ALL the difference. Show Notes: Julie Dillon RD blog Link to subscribe to the weekly FREE Food Peace™ Newsletter. It is sent out every Tuesday morning.
