My guest today is Jason Knight, the creator, host, producer, editor and promoter of the One Knight in Product podcast, a B2B SaaS product consultant, and fractional Chief Product Officer for companies that have gotten to product market fit and need help scaling their product team. Jason is also the founder of My Mentor Path, an inclusive, accessible and cloud-based mentorship service. Sandra Monteiro, a Product Manager at SAGE Publishing and a mentee of Jason's, joined us halfway through to share her own experiences with mentoring, how she found her way to working with Jason as a mentor and what some of her learnings and insights from working with Jason as a mentor have been. She also shares her thoughts on what mentees should be thinking about as they search for and work with mentors. We explored Jason's mentorship journey and why mentorship matters to him, the challenges of Industrializing mentorship pairing and productizing the matching of the lopsided mentorship marketplace. We also touch on how to measure the impact of the work and the subtle and important difference between Mentoring and Coaching. Jason suggests that many people who say they want coaching really want mentoring from someone who has “been there and done that”…and that great mentoring leverages coaching mindsets and skills in a practice he affectionately calls “centering”. Some fundamental questions we explored were the differences and relative merits of FORMAL vs INFORMAL mentorship as well as working with someone INTERNAL vs EXTERNAL to your Organization One of the big insights Sandra shared was shifting her expectations on the nature of the mentoring relationship from one centered around SOLVING vs conversations centered around TOOLS (ie, being offered relevant examples, learning materials and frameworks, holding space for emotional distance, and being offered broader context for challenges). Many health professionals use BMI to judge health and wellness, but is BMI accurate? Learn what we should actually use and what we need to know to make sure we are at optimal health! Overall wellness is guided by many things, and while weight can be important it isn't necessarily indicative of where we are in our health. As a country we are weight obsessed, this can lead us to having issues with our mental wellness. Which in turn can affect our overall health. Alissa Rumsey, MS, RD, CDN, CSCS is a registered dietitian, nutrition therapist, certified intuitive eating counselor, and the author of Unapologetic Eating: Make Peace With Food and Transform Your Life. Alissa is passionate about advocating for people to reclaim the space to eat and live unapologetically. She is the founder of Alissa Rumsey Nutrition and Wellness, a weight-inclusive nutrition practice that offers virtual counseling and online programs to help people liberate themselves from dieting, cultivate a peaceful relationship to food and their bodies, and live a more authentic, connected life. She calls New York City home and spends her free time exploring the city's food scene and searching for patches of green space to sunbathe in. Grab her FREE 5 step guide here! What is BMI? BMI stands for Body Mass Index and is a ratio between a persons weight and height. It is used to categorized people into groups of underweight, normal weight, overweight, obese and morbidly obese So many health professionals use this to evaluate and diagnose health. How is BMI calculated? The BMI equation takes a person's weight in kilograms and divides it by the person's height in meters squared. History of BMI A man named Adolphe Quetelet developed what was called the Quetelet index in the early 1800's. He was not a medical practitioner, but in fact was a mathematician, astronomer, statistician, sociologist and a eugenicist and had no interest in health. Adolphe developed this equation to study population models. The data that he used to develop the equation and the categories were taken from white European groups that were mostly male. Which shows how skewed it is. Meanwhile life insurance companies in the US needed metrics to determine their rates and began using these height and weight tables. Which again were developed using mainly white wealthy men. Their tables showed higher rate of death for overweight people, and even though later on studies showed the opposite, that they had a lower risk, they never changed it. Then a researcher in the 1970's was trying to find a different way to evaluate body mass, and he proposed using the Quetelet index which eventually became the body mass index and started being used by health professionals and researchers. Accuracy of BMI BMI is not a good indication of whether you are healthy or not healthy. It is simply a plugin of numbers. It's easy to change categories within the span of your life by small gains or losses in weight due to differences in the stage of life or season of life you are in. It is also found that when weight related feedback is given to people, they are less likely to make long term health changes. A study done a few years ago (of about 40,000 people) found that almost 50% of people categorized in the overweight category and 30% in the obese category were all metabolically healthy. This means that all their numbers like blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, etc was normal. Also about 30% of people in normal category were found to be metabolically unhealthy. Another issue is that the differences between the BMI categories are largely arbitrary. If you zoom out and look at the bigger picture you can see that a jump in category may not be that big of a jump in the weight...

Thin privilege in coaching is a reality that will impact your client relationship and coaching efficiency. Here's the thin privilege definition: being able to experience the world knowing you will always be accommodated for and considered “acceptable”, based on the (smaller) size of your body. Thin privilege in health coaching – what it means for non-diet coaching businesses is that coaches in smaller bodies have to take responsibility for their thin privilege in practice. What you'll learn listening to this episode on thin privilege in coaching: Thin privilege – definition & what it means in practice The power of language when discussing bodies Why feeling guilty about your thin privilege isn't helping & what to do instead Your role as a non-diet coach when helping clients in larger bodies Links mentioned in the show: Undiet Your Coaching Scholarship Non-Diet Professional Mentorship Program Free Professional Training & Resources Alissa Rumsey Julie Duffy Dillon Connect with our guests: Website - Alissa Rumsey Instagram - Alissa Rumsey Facebook Alissa Rumsey Website - Julie Duffy Dillon
In this week's episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating principle #3: Make Peace with Food. They are joined by registered dietitian Alissa Rumsey, a nutrition therapist, certified intuitive eating counselor, and the author of Unapologetic Eating: Make Peace With Food and Transform Your Life. Given the title of her book and her expertise in advocating for women to reclaim the space to eat and live unapologetically, Alissa was the perfect person to help answer all your questions about making peace with food. What happens if you can't trust yourself to have certain foods in the house? Why is it that I'm still so freaked out about bingeing if I'm eating consistently throughout the day? What does it really mean to have “unconditional permission” to eat all food”? Would you say eating fast food every single day because you “feel like it” is intuitive eating? Does unconditional permission ever cross a line that isn't healthy anymore? How do I begin to start practicing food freedom when the idea of incorporating so many previously off limits foods terrifies me? Making peace with food sounds great in theory but often leaves people stuck in the “how” when their fears come up. Diet culture loves to reinforce the rules and fears around what to eat. In this week's episode, Hannah, Ali and Alissa go step by step into this important third principle- what it is and how to start making peace with food. In this episode I'm chatting with dietitian, nutrition therapist, certified intuitive eating counselor, and author Alissa Rumsey about the transformative power of making peace with food. As you'll hear in the podcast, Alissa is the author of Unapologetic Eating: Make Peace With Food and Transform Your Life, a book which teaches the reader how to reconnect with their body and make peace with food. Alissa is also the founder of Alissa Rumsey Nutrition and Wellness, a weight-inclusive nutrition practice that offers virtual counseling and online programs to help people liberate themselves from dieting, cultivate a peaceful relationship to food and their bodies, and live a more authentic, connected life. I love the work Alissa is doing and learned so much from our chat, but here are some of my favorite takeaways: Our society and diet culture normalizes disordered eating, but the reality is that health and weight are not as linked as we've been led to believe; Intuitive eating allows you to focus on eating what is right for you, while taking care of your body, without restriction or deprivation; Food can be an entry point into what we want out of life, so it's important to learn to trust yourself around food; Unlearning what we've been taught about food and our bodies is an essential step in living a healthy life; Healthy living is living in a way that is aligned with one's values, specifically those associated with mental, physical, spiritual, financial, and social health. I'm interviewing Alissa Rumsey, registered dietitian, nutrition therapist, certified intuitive eating counselor, and the author of Unapologetic Eating: Make Peace with Food and Transform Your Life. We're talking about the importance of raising awareness around the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that are behind how we interact with food, why that's different from mindful eating, and what to do if you overthink food choices. Show notes: summerinnanen.com/198 In this episode, we chat about: - How Alissa got into this work and how she transitioned from a weight loss focused practice to a weight neutral one, - Why mindfulness is not the same as mindful eating, - What Alissa means by the “grey area” when it comes to food and eating, and how there's no right and wrong in intuitive eating, - Why eliminating the restrictions on food, including the mental restrictions, is so important, - How the concept of scarcity plays into our eating behaviors and relationship with food, - Tips for transitioning from doubting and questioning your hunger, decisions, and experiences, to learning to trust your intuition, Plus so much more! What on earth would a podcast about designing human conversations, facilitation, leadership and organizational change have to learn from a coach and an expert on Food and Eating? Quite a lot, as it turns out! One of my favorite design thinking principles is to learn from “alternative worlds” - absorbing how other people and communities are solving similar problems in different contexts. My guest, Alissa Rumsey, is a registered dietitian, nutrition therapist, certified intuitive eating counselor, and the author of Unapologetic Eating: Make Peace With Food and Transform Your Life. It's always interesting to learn from reflective practitioners - people willing to think about how they do what they do. Alissa designs many human conversations in her work and life, from her coaching work to her group programs to her book, and the marketing thereof - a book is a conversation, after all. Alissa's whole business is a series of conversations designed to shift the larger conversation about food and dieting. Food and eating can be fraught topics, but Alissa's approach of connecting with and learning to trust your own body is inclusive, empowering, encouraging and wise. She places dieting in a much larger (and longer) conversation about historical racism and gender dynamics. At the core of Alissa's work is an idea that is of deep interest to me: Interoception. Interoception Lately, I've been using this word in my coaching calls a lot, and it's Alissa's work that put it back at the top of my vocabulary. You might have heard the word proprioception: It's how you can touch your fingers and toes with your eyes closed: You know where your body is, physically. Proprioception is sometimes described as almost a sixth sense, the sense of self-movement and body position. It's essential for navigating the world in three dimensions, and survival. But if proprioception is a sixth sense, there's a seventh: Interoception: One's sense of one's internal state. When we say we feel fine, or feel sad, or angry or hungry, we're interpreting a multitude of internal sensations and summarizing them into a simple word. It's how we know what we need and start on the path of getting what we want in response to those needs. When we feel sad, what are we feeling that lets us know that we are feeling sad? Where is it in your body? Think about that...and feel that! When we're hungry, it can be physical hunger (like when I do a 16 hour fast...I know that I'm really hungry at the end!) or “mouth hunger” ...like how it just feels GOOD to eat ALL the popcorn. Or it can be emotional hunger that we soothe through eating. The challenge is that, unless we are attentive and aware of what's really going on with ourselves, we can't take care of ourselves, we can't give ourselves what we really want and need...and we can't grow. For example, for me, getting a massage is a much better way for me to soothe my emotional hunger...because I can tell you, no amount of popcorn will do it! In leadership, facilitation, coaching and transformation work, we need to learn to take deep care of ourselves since we are constantly caring for others. It's only when we give ourselves real nourishment, that we can care for and nourish others. Like the sign in the airplane says “Put your own oxygen mask on first”. The Work is in You & The Leader you want to be If you listen back to my episodes with Alisa Cohn (a different spelling and a very different type of coach!) she talks about how “the work is in you”...the idea that as we grow and develop, we have to find new resources in ourselves: ways to be firm and decisive, to be bigger and the CEO others need us to be...while being and staying true to ourselves. As Amy Jen Su (Author of The Leader You Want to Be) said in our conversation about leadership development coaching, “we need to find our own North Star”. I truly believe that Interoception is an absolute key to personal growth and transformation from the inside out. Also..we all eat and try to diet, to control ourselves...so stop! Eat ALL the popcorn and mac-n-cheese if you want to...and listen to your body when it says you have had enough. The Body Keeps Score If you can learn to listen to your inner signals, you'll know when your gut tells you your client is gaslighting you, or if the deck isn't actually right (versus all the changes everyone wants to make!), or when to say what needs to be said. In my coaching work, I have to hear the voices in my head and trust that sometimes, it's intuition...and sometimes I'm getting ahead of the conversation - that rushing feeling in my stomach could be my excitement to share my insights instead of bringing them out of the person in front of me. It's a dance. I like to joke: If we don't listen to our intuition, it just might pack up and head off to someplace where it's more appreciated. So, welcome your Interoception, your body wisdom, and give it a place of pride. Honor it! Alissa's book, Unapologetic Eating could also be called “Unapologetic Living”...if you want more of that in your life and work, check out her book. I've enjoyed it. Excerpt: Food is our lifeblood and eating is one of life's greatest joys and yet it can seem so complicated. Everyone has an opinion on what is “good and bad”; the “healthiest” way to eat; what is the right amount to eat and even who is allowed to eat certain foods without guilt and shame. Our culture is obsessed with food rules and as such leaves us feeling pressured, confused, guilty and ashamed if we don't or can't conform to them. On this week's episode, I am joined by Alissa Rumsey RD and author of “Unapologetic Eating”. During our conversation, Alissa discusses the political and cultural roots of our fat-phobic society obsessed with food rules and thinness. We discuss how our relationship to food is a metaphor of our relationship with ourselves, and that once we make peace with food our lives are transformed t as a resultAlissa explains how letting go of the rules and diets, in favour of an “unapologetic”, intuitive eating style allows us to step into our individual power and focus on what we were put on this earth to do. What you'll learn by listening:How food can be a powerful entry point into exploring more about ourselves, our beliefs, our values, and what we truly want out of life. How to tell if you're eating style is indeed a diet. In today's episode, we'll talk about everything the BMI gets wrong Are you "overweight"? Am I "overweight"? That single question creates more anxiety & stress to women than any other question. Being overweight implies that there's a weight we should be at. In today's society, THAT weight is determined by BMI. The Body Mass Index, the metric that uses to classify people in groups. Moreover, it's the measure of "obesity" as per medical view and a simple calculation of 2 factors: weight and height. To convert the measurement to the unit of BMI in kg/m2, you must divide the weight in pounds by the height in inches squared, then multiply by 703. My BMI Story For the purpose of this article, I did my BMI calculation using the official CDC BMI calculator. If you are between 18-24.9 you are deemed normal, 25-29.9 "overweight" and 30 or above "overweight". I bet you're curious to know my result? 39. I'm considered a class 2 "obese". As a matter of fact, for the longest, I can remember I was never not considered “overweight” based on BMI. During one of my many diet cycles in my adulthood, I remember hitting one of my lowest body weights, 180 lbs., body fat of 18% and wore size 8 p but when I calculated my BMI: "overweight". I remember the day I did the calculation and seeing the result. It sent me down a spiral of shame and binging. I still wasn't enough. Not only was I healthy as ever but also had just received a full annual health check and no longer was considered pre-diabetic. My cholesterol was well below normal, my blood pressure was stellar, my inflammation blood markers were the lowest they could be... and overweight. Is BMI an accurate measure of health? What happens if you are over-the BMI weight prescribe? Is BMI ratio an accurate measure of health? Many experts disagree that just stating the fact that BMI ratio was never created with the intention of measure of health. Recently, a 2016 study by researchers at UCLA published this month in the International Journal of Obesity looked at 40,420 adults in the most recent U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and assessed their health as measured by six accepted metrics (not including BMI) blood pressure, triglyceride, cholesterol, glucose, insulin resistance and C-reactive protein. It found out that 47 percent of people classified as "overweight" by BMI and 29 percent of those who qualified as obese were healthy as measured by at least five of those other metrics. Meanwhile, 31 percent of normal-weight people were unhealthy by two or more of the same measures. That means, we can be healthy and yet be considered "overweight". It bears the question: Over what weight exactly? So, why do we worry about BMI?
