Our conversation today is on the recent FDA panel about the safety of antidepressants during pregnancy—and all the ways the panel got it wrong. It's not just about wrong information, but it's about the harm that wrong information does to people in the perinatal period. Join us to learn more about why this information from the FDA is so dangerous to women.  Dr. Catherine Birndorf is a reproductive psychiatrist and the CEO, founder, and medical director of The Motherhood Center of New York. Dr. Birndorf is a founding director of the Payne Whitney Women's Program at Weill Cornell Medical Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where she is a clinical associate professor of psychiatry. A graduate of Smith College, Dr. Birndorf attended Brown University Medical School and did her psychiatry residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. For 10 years, Dr. Birndorf was a regular mental health columnist for Self Magazine and appeared on numerous television programs, including the Today Show, Good Morning America, MSNBC, and CNN. Her most recent book, What No One Tells You: A Guide to Your Emotions from Pregnancy to Motherhood, was published by Simon & Schuster in 2019. Show Highlights: Dr. Birndorf's perspective on the FDA panel and their decisions: “I knew this was a disaster in the making.” The FDA panel was made up of 10 “experts” (8 men/2 women) who were biased and stacked against medication and mental illness. Women have been suffering, and they continue to suffer. The work of The Motherhood Center in supporting women who need help through mental illness The potential for harm is HUGE.  What Dr. Birndorf wants people to know about mental illness and life-saving medications Dr. Birndorf's motivation to start The Motherhood Center Highlights of the support provided for women through The Motherhood Center The ways we “mother” have impacts on the generations to come; no mother should suffer with mental illness when transformation is possible. Emotions play a crucial role in our overall mental health, acting as both messengers and influencers of our psychological well-being. Positive emotions like joy, gratitude, and love can enhance mental resilience, foster strong social connections, and improve our ability to cope with stress. But on the flip side, the more challenging emotions such as sadness, anger, jealousy or anxiety, if persistent and unaddressed, can contribute to mental health issues and illness.  Understanding and managing our emotions has a positive impact on our wellbeing. By recognizing and processing our emotions, we are better equipped to deal with life's challenges, manage strong feelings, achieve better emotional balance, enhance our mental clarity, and improve our overall quality of life. But how do we learn to manage our emotions more effectively? For many we can feel at the mercy of our feelings, unaware that by drawing from simple techniques from within, we can help mitigate their intensity and reduce overwhelm.  This is where Dr Emma Hepburn comes in. An award winning clinical psychologist, lecturer, author and illustrator, Dr Emma has written and illustrated the books ‘A Toolkit For Happiness', ‘A Toolkit For Modern Life' and most recently ‘A Toolkit for Your Emotions - 45 Ways To Feel Better'. Dr Emma Hepburn is also one of the most well-known psychologists on Instagram as @thepsychologymum and has won numerous awards for her contribution to mental health awareness. Dr Emma talks to The Happier Life Project host Gabby about how emotions are made and where they come from. She shares how emotional habits are created and what it means to be on the emotional roller coaster of life, with all of its loop the loops. Dr Emma also explains how our past history and experiences influence our brain and body to create an emotional response; and ways we can objectively step back to review if how we are feeling is more of an echo from the past, rather than an appropriate response to the present.  Dr Emma reveals some of her favourite tools to manage more difficult emotions and suggests ways we might break emotional patterns that are not helpful to us. The expert psychologist also explains why we should never feel ashamed of our emotions and how we can positively influence others towards the feel good feelings too. 'A Toolkit for Your Emotions' helps readers to navigate and understand their emotions effectively. Taking a deep dive into how we feel, Dr Emma explains all the tools we need to intercept and redirect challenging emotions by offering practical strategies, exercises, and insights. Each topic is illustrated with Dr Emma's well-loved illustrations to make them accessible, meaningful and memorable.  *Note this episode is a repeat broadcast To download the free My Possible Self App: https://mypossibleself.app.link/podcast To follow My Possible Self on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mypossibleself To purchase 'A Toolkit For Your Emotions' on amazon: https://amzn.eu/d/aXJOfnI To follow Dr Emma Hepburn on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thepsychologymum

I could totally relate to the character! Can you? https://Art2Life.com - Rukmini Poddar is an artist, educator, and designer. Her creative passion lies at the intersection of emotional wellness and creative storytelling. She is an artist who draws feelings.  She admits that stumbled into art. It wasn't a planned career path. When Rukmini graduated college, she was burnt out. As a graphic designer, she spent much of her time on the computer. She wanted to get her hands dirty, so she dove into the 100-Day Project. She started playing with watercolors and made abstract doodles. She started drawing her feelings to express her creativity. She'd post them on Instagram. Before she knew it, it became the anchor for her day. By the end of the 100 days, her life was changed. People would comment and say, “I've always felt this way and I've never had words for it.” Something extremely personal to her became universal. She found a community that resonated with her work. It became her guiding light.  Drawing her feelings led to a passion for art she never knew existed. Diets, and an obsession with weight, are so much a part of Western culture that it's hardly surprising our teens can struggle to understand how to eat well. When I researched the topic for episode 9, I discovered that many experts are using mindful - or intuitive - eating to treat patients who develop disordered eating patterns. Indeed, the Intuitive Eating Workbook, which is now in its fourth edition, is recommended on the website of the UK's premier eating disorder charity Beat.  I reached out to Elyse Resch who is co-author of that book, because she has a long list of academic and industry accreditations, and  decades of experience in dealing with eating issues. Even better, she's created The Intuitive Eating Workbook for Teens to help our kids at one of this vulnerable stage.   I'm delighted that she agreed to help us unpick how we are talking with our teens about this tricky subject. CONTACT ELYSE RESCH: elyseresch@gmail.comhttps://elyseresch.com/EResch/DEALING WITG EMOTIONAL EATING:https://www.helpguide.org/articles/diets/emotional-eating.htm  THE TEN PRINCIPLES OF INTUITIVE EATING:https://www.intuitiveeating.org/10-principles-of-intuitive-eating/• Reject the Diet Mentality. Throw out the diet books and magazine articles that offer you the false hope of losing weight quickly, easily, and permanently• Honour Your Hunger. Keep your body biologically fed with adequate energy and carbohydrates. Otherwise you can trigger a primal drive to overeat• Make Peace with Food. If you tell yourself that you can't or shouldn't have a particular food, it can lead to intense feelings of deprivation that build into uncontrollable cravings and, often, bingeing. • Challenge the Food Police. Scream a loud no to thoughts in your head that declare you're “good” for eating minimal calories or “bad” because you ate a piece of chocolate cake.• Discover the Satisfaction Factor. When you eat what you really want, in an environment that is inviting, the pleasure you derive will be a powerful force in helping you feel satisfied and content. • Feel Your Fullness. Pause in the middle of eating and ask yourself how the food tastes, and what your current hunger level is. • Cope with Your Emotions. Food won't fix any of these feelings. It may comfort for the short term, distract from the pain, or even numb you. But food won't solve the problem. • Respect Your Body. Accept your genetic blueprint. Just as a person with a shoe size of eight would not expect to realistically squeeze into a size six, it is equally futile (and uncomfortable) to have a similar expectation about body size. • Exercise—Feel the Difference. Shift your focus to how it feels to move your body, rather than the calorie-burning effect of exercise.• Honour Your Health with Gentle Nutrition. Remember that you don't have to eat perfectly to be healthy.Previous episode: https://www.teenagersuntangled.com/parenting-tips-9-how-to-help-your-teens-manage-their-screen-time-and-talking-to-them-about-healthy-eating-without-giving-them-an-eating-disorder/Support the showThanks for listening. Saddleback Spiritual Growth Pastors Jason Wieland and Rob Jacobs talk about The Wall, an experience that all Christians face at some point or multiple points. Sometimes called “the dark night of the soul”, the wall is a season of spiritual dryness where one feels that God is distant. Rob and Jason talk about the wall's place in the JESUS stages, what it looks like being at the wall, and the emotional toll that the wall can take. The conversation, though, continues to talk about the wall as an invitation to step into a new season of deep, vulnerable growth with Jesus. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by the Saddleback Spiritual Growth Team.
