I really enjoyed my conversation with Haley Goodrich, RD, LDN, CEDRD-S. It's really hard to get the RD credential, but Haley went above and beyond and got her CEDRD(Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian). The extra S means that she can actually supervise other dietitians to get this CEDRD credential. In this episode, Haley and I went on a journey through her life and how we chose the career path that she chose. These are some interesting questions to ask yourself when you are unpacking your own diet culture history. Did you grow up with a food neutral home. Were you allowed to have ice cream? Pancakes? Do you have thin privilege? Is your personality more Type A? Are you going through any type of transition? And if you have chosen the career path of nutrition/dietetics - ask yourself these questions too - to make sure that nutrition hasn't become your career just so that you can learn more disordered eating techniques. Has this led you to pursue a degree in nutrition, not realizing that your eating has become disordered? For many people, stumbling upon Intuitive Eating is just an AHA moment. I see this pattern with many private practice dietitians, that entrepreneurship parallels with Intuitive Eating, because it's so right yet so hard! How do you stay aligned with your values when your getting pushback? How do we brake out of that "people pleaser" cycle when we are growing a private practice? Haley Goodrich, RD, LDN, CEDRD-S Haley Goodrich is a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian who is fiercely passionate about helping people heal from disordered eating and cultivate a peaceful relationship with food and their body. She specializes in eating disorder recovery, body image, weight-inclusive nutrition therapy, and is an iaedp approved supervisor for other registered dietitians. Talking about letting go of controlling your weight can bring up a lot of thoughts, feelings and fears, and we knew there was no better expert to answer your questions than Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian and fellow anti-diet crusader Haley Goodrich. What the heck is set point theory? How do you even know if you’re at your set point? Why is it so bad to keep your weight stable through diet and exercise if you have a normal BMI? Is your highest weight your set point?  If I lose fat and gain muscle, and stay at this same weight, will I still be at my set point? Listen, we get that trusting your body can feel overwhelming and scary, so we’re here to give you the facts, encouragement and reassurance you may need to ditch the scale. HAES® informed eating disorders dietitian Haley Goodrich joins Jennifer for an informative and heartwarming discussion on this episode of the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast. Co-founder of INSPIRD to SEEK, a community for weight-inclusive healthcare professionals, Haley shares her story of how she evolved to become an advocate and educator of the HAES approach to dietetics. After quickly discovering early in her career that clinical dietetics was not her jam, she reflects how becoming an entrepreneur was the only way to practice the way she wanted. After opening a private practice which grew quicker than she anticipated, she studied Intuitive Eating as a tool, learned more about how to teach her clients about HAES, and worked toward being an eating disorders dietitian. Now running a group practice with two other dietitians, Haley discusses the process of hiring, the satisfaction of employing others, and how success in a private practice is not always based on the numbers, but sustained growth by creating relationships with referral sources and practitioners in the area. “I was tired of living really small, and I’d rather take a risk and live a bigger life than feel really safe inside my comfort zone, and I’ll figure it out.” – Haley Goodrich Haley also tells how she took on the Eating Disorders Chair position in the Behavioral Health and Nutrition dietetic practice group from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, how it has helped her to communicate strategically, and the importance of HAES being embraced in the academy. She also shares how INSPIRD to SEEK evolved out of her own need for community at a time before any Facebook groups, and being the only HAES practitioner in Pittsburgh, PA. Together they shine a light on the topic of collaboration instead of competition in the niche of anti-diet practitioners, and how we all bring our own message that is unique to help each other learn and grow. “I truly think that competition in this space is a way to distract ourself from the real purpose of our work. We don’t need to compete against each other. We’re going against the grain and a $70 billion diet industry; that’s who we need to compete against.” – Haley Goodrich Some of the topics discussed include: The privilege of being a Dietitian and being able to take the risk of being a business owner. The challenge of finding balance her professional and personal life. The importance of boundaries, how they shift, and managing time on social media. Her passion for supporting dietitians in private practice to shift to a weight-inclusive approach.  Her advice to new dietitians. In this episode, we’re talking food and body with our first guest, nutritionist Haley Goodrich, who we adore for many reasons—especially the way she helps others find joy and peace with their bodies. If you’re tired of feeding into toxic diet culture, you’ll be refreshed by Haley’s “Health at Every Size” philosophy that says you are worthy of caring for your body in ways that make you feel stronger and healthier, no matter the number you see on the scale. Jen and Haley have an eye-opening discussion about the way thin privilege shows up in our everyday lives and how we can become more inclusive of others’ different shapes. Haley encourages us to develop a healthy relationship with food that doesn’t involve strict calorie counting or calling foods “good” or “bad,” but instead helps us remember food is neutral—it’s just something we nourish ourselves with, body and soul.

But we have to move away from this to find authentic health! The world is still really stuck in diet culture, and so we have to guard ourselves against the messaging around us! Support is ESSENTIAL to this process, especially from clinicians that understand Health at Every Size. We have to be sure that we're getting ENOUGH food every day, and that we're finding satisfaction from our food experiences in order to feel truly satiated. In this diet culture world, we actually might be UNDER eating! This can make our bodies think we're starving, which leads to bingeing. Make sure you're eating enough and eating a VARIETY of foods! It's also important to make sure that we've fully made peace with ALL foods! This is a part of intuitive eating, and will help you to balance your eating behaviors. Having true permission to eat can transform your relationship with food and can even help you to honor your body overall, which can help support body acceptance and body respect. Common aches and pains happen to people in ALL body sizes! If someone blames your knee pain on your size, they're being fatphobic, PERIOD!! By allowing your body to be where it wants to be, you're actually giving yourself the best opportunity to heal. What would happen if you all of a sudden gave yourself permission? Permission to eat what you want, permission to be your authentic self, permission to move your body in a way that feels good (rather than exercising out of a sense of body manipulation)? These are powerful questions to explore in your journey toward a healthier relationship with food and your body. Haley Goodrich, RDN is a dietitian and nutrition therapist who specializes in helping her clients create effective strategies and individualized solutions to nourish a happier and healthier life. I’m really excited to introduce you to disordered eating dietician Haley Goodrich. Both Haley and I suffer from anxiety and Haley shares some great advice on how she deals with that, as well as her perfectionist tendencies that in her college days manifested as issues with food and over exercise. We discuss how they can morph and show up in other ways even when you've developed a healthy relationship to food. We also talk about the experience of being a nutrition student and how that can really fuel weirdness around food if you have perfectionist tendencies or are predisposed to it in some way. There's also a level of cognitive dissonance where on one hand you’re trying to be the perfect nutrition student, but on the other hand you want to drink beer and eat cake; something that intuitive eating is flexible enough to incorporate but traditional nutrition and dietetics models are way too rigid for which can again cause a lot of anxiety if you’re a perfectionist. Haley is also a total nutrition boss and she shares some advice for really anyone who wants to be an entrepreneur but especially people who want to work within the health at every size, intuitive eating, and non-diet paradigm.
