This podcast series is intended to take you on a journey to each of the world's many fascinating and diverse nations. In each episode you will learn factual points as well as many details that make each nation unique. Each episode will include four segments. The first one - Bare Bones - will include the basics such as the country's capital, it's form of government, languages, religions, and more. The second one - Heart of the Nation - is where we go more in depth into the geography, wildlife, history, family life, education, arts and culture, imports and exports, to name a few. The third one - Who is? will discuss a few of the notable people from this country. The fourth one - (my favourite) Who Would've Thought? - where detailed unique facts about a country are presented. You will hear no debates, no political slants, and no personal opinions. You will get just the facts. Gaining knowledge about other people and their culture is often the best way to understand who they are and why they do things a certain way. This, in turn, can make us less fearful of differences and hopefully more accepting.

The world's largest ancient castle is in the capital city, Prague, equal in size to about 7 football fields. Prague is known as the “City of a Hundred Spires” due to its breathtaking Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. The country has the highest per capita beer consumption in the world; maybe they can blame that on the fact that this is where Pilsner beer originated. It's home to the oldest functioning astronomical clock in the world displaying Babylonian time, Old Bohemian time, German time, and Sidereal time. Mineral springs are the focus of many quaint spa towns and the deepest freshwater cave in the world, at 1 km or .62 miles deep, is in the eastern part of the country.· 03:38 – Intro · 04:56 – Bare Bones· 06:11 – Heart of the Nation· 01:19:50 – Who Is?· 01:26:06 – Who Would've Thought?Find Nations of the World Podcast:Email now-podcast@heartsgroup.orgWebsite https://nationsoftheworldpodcast.comPatreon https://www.patreon.com/nationsoftheworld
Legend has it that Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, was born in Cyprus. She is said to have emerged from a rock at Aphrodite's beach. Today, people watch the ocean waves crash over this rock as they form pillars of foam said to resemble the goddess of love. It is also called the playground of the Gods. The unity of this island nation is lacking as there is a division between the Greek and the Turkish citizens.· 00:00 – Intro · 00:59 – Bare Bones· 03:45 – Heart of the Nation· 03:49 – Geography and Climate· 06:57 – Plants and Animals· 13:12 – People· 31:44 – Urbanism and Architecture· 34:32 – History· 39:52 – Government· 45:16 – Economy· 49:56 – Doing Business· 51:10 – Crime and Legal Issues· 52:05 – Social Provisions· 54:44 – Education· 57:56 – Health· 01:00:10 – Food · 01:04:30 – Arts· 01:06:49 – Unique Holidays and Celebrations· 01:09:20 – Sports· 01:10:04 – Transportation· 01:12:11 – Communications· 01:13:33 – Energy· 01:14:47 – Travel· 01:23:59 – Who Is?· 01:30:55 – Who Would've Thought?Find Nations of the World Podcast:Email now-podcast@heartsgroup.orgWebsite https://nationsoftheworldpodcast.comPatreon https://www.patreon.com/nationsoftheworld

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a country with the natural resources to be one of the world's richest countries but is among the world's 5 poorest. It has nearly half of the world's cobalt supply, used in producing lithium-ion batteries that drive electric vehicles. This is an island nation which was created by rising magma from the ocean. There is still an active volcano on one of the islands, and several other places where the ground is very warm or even hot. There are nearby underground volcanoes that have not yet reached the water's surface and will likely add to these islands in the future. True to its volcanic nature, the smell of sulfur can be detected when the wind blows in the right direction, as the steam escapes from underneath the surface. Cameroon has had a history of attacks by the Islamist terrorist group known as Boko Haram, who was responsible for the death of at least 1,000 in 2015. The country has one of the most diverse ecosystems in Africa. It has been confirmed by scientists that HIV originated here in wild chimpanzees. Some of its people practice spider divination, where the spider is deemed capable of answering questions depending on how it displaces cards stacked outside its burrow hole. · 00:00 – Intro · 01:05 – Bare Bones · 02:40 – Heart of the Nation · 01:08:04 – Who Is? · 01:08:31 – Who Would've Thought? It's home to many interesting and unique animal species including the first (and currently the only) species of terrestrial mollusk known to be bioluminescent. It's also where the Aspara dance originated – a dance which is such a symbolic feature of the culture that it was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This country has the world's longest lake as its western border. And along that lake many have seen Gustave, a crocodile who is credited with eating hundreds of people over the course of his life which is estimated at being 60-100 years. The country has seen 2 mass genocides in its history. The people here enjoy banana beer, which is an important part of social gatherings. It's generally placed in a large bowl and drunk communally through straws by all who are gathered. · 00:00 – Intro · 01:02 – Bare Bones · 02:49 – Heart of the Nation · 01:03:23 – Who Is? · 01:05:32 – Who Would've Thought? Bulgaria, full of ancient history, is home to the oldest European city, founded in 6000 BCE. Its culture includes folk songs often accompanied by bagpipes. This is such a significant cultural heritage that one such song was included in the infamous Voyager Golden Record, which journeyed into space onboard the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Its population (6.8 million today) is on a decline since its peak in 1986 of 9 million. It's only one of two nations whose population is lower today than it was in 1950. · 00:00 – Intro · 01:12 – Bare Bones · 02:34 – Heart of the Nation · 01:21:28 – Who Is? · 01:25:23 – Who Would've Thought? Botswana was, in 2016, named by Lonely Planet, as the top destination for tourists. It is likely because about 40% of its land is reserved under government protection, as natural areas in the form of sanctuaries, reserves, wildlife management areas, and national parks. One special area is the Kalahari Desert, with a delta that supports many species of large mammals including rhinoceros, cheetahs, and lions. It is also famous for its large dazzle of zebras and meerkats. · 00:00 – Intro · 01:11 – Bare Bones · 03:03 – Heart of the Nation · 01:08:26 – Who Is? · 01:10:14 – Who Would've Thought? Bolivia is a country with 36 indigenous people and 37 official languages. It has the world's largest salt flat. Besides supplying salt, it contains several other minerals of use. It is so large that after it rains the standing water becomes the earth's largest mirror making it ideal for calibrating the altimeters for earth's satellites. Nearby you will find the Hotel de Salad, built entirely from salt blocks including the interior and the furniture. It is home to what was known as The Death Road - the world's most dangerous road in the 90's. · 00:00 – Intro · 01:29 – Bare Bones · 05:12 – Heart of the Nation · 01:14:43 – Who Is? · 01:16:04 – Who Would've Thought? Bhutan is a country that is very serious about the environment. In fact, it's the first country to become carbon-negative, and one of 3 countries who can claim that title. Unlike most countries who measure their success via GDP, this country has a measure known as GNH - Gross National Happiness. This is based on 4 different indicators: sustainable development, preservation and promotion of cultural values, good governance, and a healthy environment. Even the nation's constitution includes an article pertaining to the environment, where it states, ‘Every Bhutanese is a trustee of the Kingdom's natural resources and environment for the benefit of the present and future generations, and it is the fundamental duty of every citizen to contribute to the protection of the natural environment.' · 00:39 – Intro · 01:39 – Bare Bones · 03:35 – Heart of the Nation · 01:01:10 – Who Is? · 01:04:04 – Who Would've Thought? Bermuda is group of limestone islands made from the protruding parts of a flat, extinct submarine volcano. It is a popular tourist destination known for its pink sand beaches, its abundance of golf courses, having more per square mile than any other country, and for the more than 300 shipwrecks just off its shores, which makes for intriguing underwater scuba diving adventures. It lies in the region of the mysterious Bermuda Triangle, or Devil's Triangle, where numerous airplanes and ships have gone missing never to be seen again. · 00:25 – Intro · 01:06 – Bare Bones · 02:50 – Heart of the Nation · 00:58:30 – Who Is? · 01:01:05 – Who Would've Thought? Benin is a country whose government's aim is to educate future generations about its long history of human suffering via the slave trade. There are a couple of museums in place just for this purpose. Yet, due to great poverty in the country it is ironic that many parents in desperation, send their children to work as servants in the homes of the wealthy, both in their own country and in neighbouring countries. It is also the birthplace of Vodou, a practice which voodoo stems from. This is a country where the Royal Python is welcomed into the homes nearby the Serpent Temple they are released from weekly, as they hunt for a meal. Those who've hosted a python visit will kindly return them to the temple at day's end. · 00:00 – Intro · 01:19 – Bare Bones · 02:47 – Heart of the Nation · 48:43 – Who Is? · 49:13 – Who Would've Thought? This is the last country in Europe which still uses the death penalty and the last country in Europe run by a dictator. It is also the only country of the former USSR that has restored the Soviet flag (with minor changes). This is a country where every second child, instead of wanting to be an astronaut, wants to become a programmer, since it is considered a very prestigious profession, where people here earn more than programmers in all the neighboring countries. This tropical island is the third-most developed country in the Western hemisphere. Although it is a tropical island in the Caribbean, it has managed to evade being hit by a hurricane in over 40 years. It is home to the world's oldest rum, established in 1703. There are believed to be over 1,500 rum bars located on the island. This island's shores at times are overrun with a severe volume of a certain seaweed which causes many problems including entangling sea turtles and dolphins.
