You can find Sariah Wilson at her website www.sariahwilson.com or on IG - @sariahwilsonauthor   We chat this week with Sariah Wilson, the author of many, many rom-coms, who recently published her first romantasy titled A Tribute of Fire. A Tribute of Fire is inspired by the myth of Cassandra who, if you remember, is the Trojan princess who was cursed with the ability to see the future but no one believes her. Sariah's story focuses on Cassandra's assault in Athena's temple by Greek hero Ajax and the resulting punishment which is that two maidens from Ajax's home, Locris, will be sacrified. How exactly, this punishes Ajax, I'm not sure, but such is Greek myth.    Sariah talks to us about her favorite romance trope (which she hardly ever writes herself), the whirlwind backstory to the publishing of this book, and how the popularity of The Fourth Wing series really cracked open a whole new world for romance writers.   And for our book recommendations, we're going to share some children's picture books that have stories and illustrations we love. Earlier this month was National Picture Book Authors & Illustrators Week, but we don't think you need a special week as an excuse to read a delightful picture book.    Books Mentioned in this Episode:   1- A Tribute of Fire by Sariah Wilson 2- The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks   3- A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes   4- The Schwa was Here by Neal Shusterman   5- Greek and Roman Warfare: Battles, Tactics, and Trickery by John Drogo Mortagu   6- A Monsoon Rising by Thea Gaunzon   7- Roland Rogers Isn't Dead Yet by Samantha Leigh Allen   8- A Book Recommended by Fellow Book Lover Corinne @she.loves.bookshelves - A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Kaleidoscopic psychedelia from one of Australia's finest. While it might feel early to call bets on DJs of the decade, Kia Sydney, best known as Kia, is undoubtedly one of them. The Animalia founder began in Naarm's (Melbourne) underground scene in the mid-2010s, crediting a trip to the influential deep techno Japanese festival, Labyrinth, as the inspiration behind her sound. Deep techno might not cut it as a descriptor for Sydney's sound, though. Hypnotic ribbons of steely techno mix with atmospherics and nimble grooves, drawing from IDM, dub and tech house, sharing as much with DJ Nobu and Donato Dozzy (try to find the track that overlaps with Dozzy's own RA Podcast) as well as modern practitioners like Priori and Beatrice M. This distinctly Australian scuttling psychedelia has made Kia one of the most sought-after underground DJs globally. Her brainchild, Animalia, showcases a plurality of sounds and scenes, serving as living proof of the fruitful shift of the 2020s: less serious, perhaps, but with a sense of open-minded worldliness that offers a far more promising vision of what dance music can be and achieve. Sydney's rare talent lies in forging connections, bringing people, sounds and ideas together with a distinct playfulness. Her RA Podcast showcases this alchemy in abundance, weaving classics like Monolake and Enya with peers such as OK EG, Cousin and Command D. As she told us in her 2023 Breaking Through profile, "people tell me I have quite a distinctive sound but I can't tell so much because I hear so many different versions of it." RA.973 serves as confirmation that Kia's style is, to say the least, the mark of a generational talent. @kia-sydney @animalia-label @cirruslabel Read more at ra.co/podcast/973

The supremely talented DJ Plead launches us into a mind warping world of percussive pleasures and dexterous genre bending, with his trademark agile club rhythms and pacy low end palpitations on full display in episode 303! @1djplead Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when planning this mix, and what type of listening environment could you imagine it being easily enjoyed in? A. I actually looked through my rekordbox history from a recent Animalia night I played in Naarm and drew some inspiration from that. When listening back to the mix I can imagine it being played for a semi-casual game of Futsal or something like that. I feel like there are some light-footed tracks in there that would be useful to some nimble futsal players. Q. Are there any songs in the mix that are especially close to your heart, and what is it about these cuts that resonate with you so much? A. Mata by Nidia & Valentina It's taken off a truly sublime Album that I draw lots of inspiration from. It's simultaneously organic and loose and club-playable, which is a tough one to get right. It's something I'm constantly trying to achieve but they seem to have done it effortlessly. Dotted by Cliques I actually tried to google to see if I've ever put this tune in another guest mix before. I probably have, so I'll apologise for that now. Cliques has always had a big influence on me since I started producing music. They've since stopped producing themselves which is a shame but I always play their old tunes out if I can. RIP Cliques.. Q. One of the things I've been fascinated with in your DJ sets (the Sustain-Release set for example) is your mixing of polyrhythms to seamlessly bridge tempos throughout a set. How did you first get inspired to experiment with this style and what are some of otherwise conflicting genres/sounds that have blended nicely? A. My DJing style is at times an extension of my music production. I think this might be a good example of that. The sustain release transition from 150 to 100 is using a tune that I produced years ago in a 3/4 time signature. I've produced a few tunes over the past few years that are able to do that. It just allows me at times to bounce around to different worlds and stops me from feeling stuck in a tempo-range. I haven't done it so much recently but I'd like to get back into doing it. It can create a really strange feeling for the audience. At Sustain-Release, a lot of the audience were on hallucinogens so it felt appropriate to get trippy in that way. It's harder to pull off in a nightclub environment. I'm no longer sure what the original inspiration for experimenting with this style was. Playing a lot of tunes that have a polyrhythm in them can often make you feel like you have the option to dance at two different tempos.

Robin and Julia Rogers: A Collaboration Resulting in Provocative Glass Sculpture

Physically and metaphorically Robin and Julia Rogers put their minds, hearts and hands together to create sculptural works in glass – their chosen material because of its inherent qualities of luminosity, viscosity, and seductive flow. Their inspiration is drawn from the natural world, personal experience, family life, music, psychology, and science. Robin and Julia state: “Complex and mystifying, the human mind drives us, but the subtle inner workings remain, to certain extent, unknown. Delving into the psyche, our work explores the human mind to reveal a metaphorical interior of ideas, emotions, and mystery. Floating in the vast sea of our own thought we are alone. This solitude, both deeply haunting and beautiful, is ours to contemplate, conquer, and call our own. Our minds never stop imagining the possibilities of what can be explored, discovered, shared, and executed.” In their series, Architecture of the Mind, heads are turned into buildings whose history and occupancy is contemplated. Each building has its own unique story, a background different from the one living next door. Community is formed, despite the differences, allowing life to thrive in this modern, fast-paced world. Thoughts from day-to-day life, memories, or even multiple personalities are reflected in these works. Animalia is also a driving and important theme in the narrative of the Rogers' work. Since the advent of human expression, animals have been ever present. The artists feel that animals have a certain wisdom and intuition that brings alignment with the natural world. There is something to be learned from the animal spirit; especially in today's fast paced digital life where it is easy to forget that we, ourselves, are inseparable from nature. Human Hybrids (Bioengineered) is a series of anthropomorphic humans, where animal and human DNA have been melded together. Imagine the possibilities of a not- so-distant future, where rapid breakthroughs in genetic research, advances in molecular biology, and new reproductive technologies, allow scientists to manipulate human DNA at the gene level to cure inheritable diseases. In this plausible future, parents can choose which of their own genes to share with their children and which to omit. One can even imagine how animal genes could be introduced to give heightened senses and new abilities to these superhuman species.  Discovering how to translate their ideas into glass can be both challenging and rewarding. After scale drawings are made, Robin and Julia decide who will make which parts of the sculpture and hot work begins. Once all the parts are made, they work with a skilled team of assistants for the final assembly. The finished glass is often combined with other materials such as fur, wood, and steel to complete the sculpture. Currently, Robin and Julia both work at the Chrysler Museum of Art, where Robin is the Glass Studio Program Director and Julia is the Higher Education and Outreach Coordinator. They met in a small hot glass studio in Western Montana in 2001 at a glass shop called Cloud Cap Glass. As their friendship grew, their glass practices began to overlap. They both became part owners of the studio and worked together, operating the small business and creating glass works. In pursuit of Master of Fine Art degrees, the couple decided to leave their beloved Montana in 2005. They re-envisioned their glass studio and created a trailer-mounted portable shop. With their tools, dogs and one-year-old son, they set out for Southern Illinois. Following professional opportunities, the glassy family has lived in Carbondale, Illinois; Bowling Green, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; and Norfolk, Virginia. In 2010, after nearly 10 years of working together and assisting with each other's work, the duo decided to start creating artwork collaboratively. In these bodies of work, every step of the process, from conception to installing, is completed by both artists. This method of working has led to the creation of artwork that Julia and Robin are excited to make and proud to exhibit. Through the synergy of this collaboration, the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts.  The couple is currently working on new pieces to be shown in the Habatat International Exhibition in April 2024 at Habatat Gallery in Michigan. They are also starting a collaboration with Fabiano Zanchi, teaching at UrbanGlass in June, and will be the featured artists at the International Glass Symposium in Novy Bor, Czechia in October. Additionally, the studio at the Chrysler Museum of Art, where they make most of their work, is currently tripling in size. Phase 1 of the project ends in May 2024 and phase 2 will be completed by the end of 2024.

The Secret Teachings

The Joker said that “madness is like gravity; all it takes is a little push.” All throughout the world, and especially in the United States, we are witnessing a growing divide between civility and barbarous behavior. From flash mobs robbing stores and mobs attacking people on the street, to social media challenges, and even the lack of basic ‘concert etiquette'. It seems as if it is not only our culture or social institutions but our very minds and bodies too that have been contaminated with something perverse and putrid. From the Fukushima water dump into the ocean this month to Maui and Burning Man. We are watching the pink turn black, i.e., nature, love, etc., being inverted and burned away. The paradise of Maui was scorched with fire and then officials planned to spray it with a pink plastic coating. The pink salty desert of Black Rock, where Burning Man takes place, was scorched with brown and black mud from flooding. These are microcosm of contamination; of alchemical mutation rather than transformation. It's the same theme we saw in Barbie with the Saturn Sigil and in Oppenheimer with the Jupiter Sigil. In fact, Deborah De Luca, a DJ at Burning Man, also wore the Jupiter Sigil while she played over the weekend. This barbarous behavior is a de-evolved mankind, birthed from the blackness of the womb and pinkness of the birth canal. That birth is of a new man, less evolved, more angry, and driven by radical and dangerous ideologies, as well as a general lack of values. It is no coincidence then that Burning Man's theme this year was ANIMALIA, the animal, or that the Electric Zoo festival was turned into chaos when attendees stormed the gates like feral or caged animals. Even all the roads into Burning Man were named after cryptids like the Kraken - which is also a disease variant. This behavior is also exemplified by the concept of ‘crazy barbie' who is played with too hard by Lovecraftian beings, i.e., humans, in another dimension beyond the torn membrane separating universes.Something is making us crazy, be that ideology, lack of education, or pop-culture. Something is turning us into beasts, dragons, and monsters. All the drugs, sex, bizarre art, and energy transfer at Burning Man, not to mention the giant burned effigy, is equivalent to an Aleister Crowley magic ritual, or something akin to a black mass offering. The fact that this occurs in a desert, like the Trinity bomb test, is further indicative of its ritual and magical nature. The same debauchery is encouraged at every level of our society. And it opens the body and mind to the same forms of possession. Then when you step outside of these popular culture themes and topics you find people like Taylor Swift who has a phantom piano, fans chanting 'summon the demons', UFO sightings over her concert, and people leaving with ‘post-concert amnesia'. In fact, many swifties are having out-of-body experiences or entering into dream-like states - the name of Burning Man in 2022 was ‘Waking Dreams', which featured pink smoke, DNA, and an eyeball Saturn Sigil. Taylor Swift's current tour is also called Eras, like the goddess of discord and also another variant like Kraken. Taking a look at other ultra-famous artists like Dojo Cat make the picture a lot clearer. Her songs ‘Paint the Town Red' and ‘Demons' are not metaphors and they are not for shock value - a shirt that reads ‘feral', armbands of reversed pentagrams, blood sacrifice; the pulling back of the white veil and demonic possession in a bathtub of black goo.Doja Cat also announced her new album 'Scarlet' with a red spider in August, just a few weeks after AHS announced the new season 'Delicate' which features birth and spiders. These lyrics, songs, and images are sincere rituals intended to steal through vampiric means people's currency in the form of attention and money. This is also not the Satanic Panic 2.0, but instead a result of our collective loss of culture, values, morals, ethics, responsibly, etc. Therefore, people are losing their minds, becoming animals, and BEASTS, and the elite priestly class, that uses these celebrities as dolls, is openly and proudly showing what they believe in and have faith in.This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5328407/advertisement

This week we bring you Part 4 of History of the Cosmos: Animalia, where things are really starting to happen here on earth after millions of years of being frozen solid.  We talk more about this cool little lipid membrane that, as Dr. Blundell says, “will be an essential element of all life on our planet.  It lets the world flow into us and out of us in the relationships that sustain us.”Plants begin to evolve, animals arrive, we talk about the connection between the salt in the oceans and the salt in your tears, and after listening to this episode, you may never look at your vision the same way. Now, for those of you out there who, like me, or not science nerds, please  don't worry about, or trip on the science, just kind of let it wash over you and take in the overall message here, because it's a very powerful one that can truly make a positive and beautiful difference in your life. How did we get here? And where do we go from here? In this five-part series, Ecologist and founder of Oika, Dr. Rich Blundell takes us on a journey of the cosmos.  But this is way more than a history lesson about the universe.  This is about you, and me and everyone and everything around us, how it all came to be, and how we all are connected. Nature has intelligence; A magnificent, sublime, complex intelligence that science is just now beginning to understand.  What would it be like if we felt that intelligence inside of us?  In this series, you will discover how to tap into, and feel that innate intelligence that is already inside of you right now.  Once humankind begins to understand this, to know this, to feel this, we will be living in a very different, much more beautiful world.  So join us on this journey.  It just might change your life.To get the most out of this episode, please first watch this short 9-minute film:Animalia: https://vimeo.com/showcase/7295405/video/483691027To learn more about Dr. Rich Blundell and Oika, please visit:https://oika.com To stay connected with Better Place Project and for updates and behind the scenes info, please follow us on social media:Website:https://www.betterplaceproject.org/ Instagram: @BetterPlaceProj To follow Steve on Instagram@SteveNorrisOfficialFacebook: Facebook.com/BetterPlaceProjectPodcastTwitter: @BetterPlaceProjEmail: BetterPlaceProjectPodcast@gmail.com

Australian Kia very quickly rose up through the grimy after-hours rave scene of Melbourne to make her mark on the international stage. Now Berlin-based, her unique grasp of rhythm is rooted in a love of bass, IDM and deeper techno though she is adept at exploring a wide range of moods within those worlds. She has done so at places like ADE and our own festival and extends her good taste to the curation of her Animalia imprint and its ambient sub-label Cirrus as well as her own original tracks on Nous'klaer Audio. In this week's mix, Kia showcases a colourful and kaleidoscopic take on techno which she says was awakened by an early trip to Japan's famously head Labyrinth festival. It's a hi-fidelity feast of supple rhythms, icy synths and deep space ambiance that unfolds in late-night fashion. The melodies are as delicate as silk, the drums rubbery yet punchy. It's high-paced future music that manages to be as delicate and beautiful as it is dynamic.

And what's a clock anyway? Hear this year's art theme (ANIMALIA) express itself through cryptids (animals that no one can prove are real). “It's consumption media, not social media. A lot of people are struggling with this, and a lot more are going to. And I would like to be part of the solution.” James is also CEO & Co-founder of Loop.co — a company focused on Improving the world's social and mental health. James Veraldi is ALSO a longtime FrieMMd of the Pod. Beyond being the a past guest (+host of the podcast Animalia) - he's tirelessly trying to make the world a better place, despite all the social / consumption media around us. So many of us - often including folks we love and work with - have had experience with mental health. James' missions is to help solve these challenges — the very definition of "touching lives, improving life." This is a very recent conversation from Raman's OTHER podcast "Learnings from Leaders" - but it was so powerful that we wanted to share it here. James is a veteran of the early internet / content era - with roles partnering with and on the inside of YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok. There he got only invaluable insider experiences in product and content marketing — but also a deeper understanding of the potential negative effects our media consumption economy can drive — for young and old folks alike. So James made a bold choice to step out and solve the problem, by founding LOOP, a platform built to tackle mental health challenges - starting with social anxiety.  Today in the US 36% of adults identify as severely lonely, 61% of adolescents and teens. That's a big number that identify as severely lonely. And what the clinical science shows is that this is a product of lacking high quality of relationships in your life — and work. Too many people struggle today with building social relationships and succeeding in different social situations - in work and life - which is especially a challenge for the younger millennial and Gen Z workforce today. If you're a manager of people - an exec or HR stakeholder - you can learn more and sign up for a free 30-day trial for you and some of your colleagues — just visit Loop.co/work. When he's not not working, James is a dog lover, beekeeper, and even rehabilitates the occasional squirrel or crow. You'll enjoy this candid conversation about a career journey that led to a greater good - building meaningful solutions for the world of social and mental health - and hopefully be inspired on how you can make a difference.
