A wide-ranging conversation with Bernhard, who spent over 40 years in the German police force. Bernhard has been hugely successful in the uniquely German sport, "Schutzhund" (German for Protection Dog), also known as IGP. This is something of a triathlon for working dogs (tracking, obedience, protection)or working trials for protective breeds - notably German Shepherds but also the other main protection dog breeds. Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 77-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 21,603 on turnover of 2.3-billion N-T. The market closed flat on Tuesday as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing saw its early gains eroded due to stiff resistance ahead of the critical 1,000 N-T per share mark - despite the opening of Computex in Taipei. Lai calls Beijing an 'aggressor' that threatens peace President Lai Ching-te has marked the first anniversary of his taking office by holding a press conference during which he accused Beijing of being an "aggressor" by threatening peace across the Taiwan Strait. However, despite branding China as an "aggressor," Lai also reiterated his openness to continuing exchanges and collaborations with China provided that each side treats the other equally and with respect. According to Lai, he remains willing to "engage in dialogue instead of confrontation" and work with China toward peace and prosperity. Lai also told reporters that many countries, including Taiwan, are under the threat of aggressors - but Taiwan is, on the contrary, committed to pursuing (追求) peace. CDC reporting 88% rise in COVID outpatients and emergency visits The Centers for Disease Control is reporting an 88.2-per cent weekly increase in the number of COVID outpatient and emergency visits last week. According to the C-D-C, there were 19,097 outpatient and emergency visits from between May 11 and 17. Although that figure is up from the previous week, it was still lower than same period of last year. C-D-C Deputy Director-General Philip Luo says the current COVID outbreak will peak in mid-to-late June, when weekly outpatient and emergency visits reach between 55,000 and 65,000 and it will continue through the end of July. SA president to meet Trump on Wednesday amid deteriorating relations South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is due to meet his US counterpart Donald Trump today. The crunch talks come amid ideological (思想) differences, geopolitical alliances, and domestic policy conflicts. Kate Fisher reports from Washington UN Sounds Warning on Colombia Indigenous Groups The United Nations human rights office in Colombia says that five Indigenous groups in northern Colombia's mountain range face “physical and cultural” extinction. The UN says this threat stems from armed group conflicts over their territory and insufficient (不足的) state protection. Colombia's representative for the UN High Commissioner for Human Right says the risk of physical and cultural extinction of Indigenous People of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is “an ongoing (持續存在的) tragedy that we can and must prevent.” He urged the Colombian government to protect the Indigenous groups, whose combined population is approximately 55-thousand people. In 2022, UNESCO added the ancestral knowledge of these Indigenous groups to its Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. That was the I.C.R.T. "I chose this sound because it is a particularly well recorded field recording with a wide frequency range providing me a lot of scope with which to play. Whilst listening to it I instantly heard clear and distinct resonant frequencies, and even in places ghost tones produced by the interaction of frequencies. I felt these resonant frequencies (the uniquely experienced result of specific physical objects interacting with each other in a very particular physical space) and ghost tones (which are not ‘really' there but whose effects are ‘really' felt) served as an excellent metaphor for Intangible Cultural Heritage.  "I wanted in my piece simply to pull out and emphasise some of these resonant frequencies and ghost tones whilst maintaining much of the original recording. I did this by sampling very short pieces of the recording and looping them whilst adding reverbs, feedbacks and delays. I also replicated some of the tones using a synth, again looping them and adding reverbs, feedbacks and delays. I allowed these drones to come in to the composition very slowly over the length of the whole piece. I also had a second copy of the original recording to which I applied more reverbs, feedbacks and delays, again mixed to come in slowly over the length of the piece.  "As the original dry recording is slowly removed from the mix the altered copy is slowly introduced. I wanted the transition to be so slow as to be barely noticeable. If one were to listen only to the end of the piece one may not be able to discern the source, although all the tones are there in the original. Finally, as the drones fade at the end of the piece, all that is left is the residue of the process, the memory of the experience of hearing the bells, which then too fades." The Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is a cornerstone of Chinese culture, centered around family reunions, festive traditions, and an unparalleled travel rush. This year's celebration holds even greater significance, as it marks the first Spring Festival since UNESCO recognized the festival as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The global recognition highlights the cultural richness of this ancient tradition, which has become a bridge connecting communities far beyond China's borders.

Every Friday, musician Enes Salman performs the Sevdalinka, an ancient form of love song from Bosnia and Herzegovina. 每周五，音乐家埃内斯·萨尔曼 (Enes Salman) 都会演奏《塞夫达林卡》(Sevdalinka)，这是一种来自波斯尼亚和黑塞哥维那的古老情歌。 Sevdalinka was recently included in UNESCO's National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. UNESCO Koji Fermentation recognition? In episode 83, we discuss the recent announcement that Japanese koji alcohol fermentation has been named an intangible cultural heritage.

In December, UNESCO recognized “Traditional Sake Making Techniques” as Japan's latest example of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Andy and Jim have questions, and maybe even a few answers, about what exactly that might mean. The key is, of course, koji and its use in alcoholic fermentation in Japan. Vocabulary for this episode: Barakoji バラ麹 - Japan's particular style of sprinkling Aspergillus oryzae spores over loose rice to make koji. The kebaya has been successfully inscribed onto the UNESCO representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. It was jointly nominated by five Southeast Asian countries - Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand - and is the largest nomination from Southeast Asia to date in terms of nominating countries. The collaboration comes as the kebaya celebrates the shared cultural identity across the five countries, promotes cross-cultural understanding, and continues to be present, actively produced and worn by many communities across Southeast Asia. Cilvēces nemateriālā kultūras mantojuma reprezentatīvajā sarakstā (Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity) šogad tika iekļautas 58 jaunas vērtības. Starp tām ir dažādi festivāli un tradicionāli svētki – piemēram, Jaunā gada svinības Novruz (arī Nauruz, Nevruz, Navrus), ko bija pieteikušas 13 valstis (Afganistāna, Azerbaidžāna, Indija, Irāna, Irāka, Kazahstāna, Kirgizstāna, Uzbekistāna, Pakistāna, Tadžikistāna, Turcija, Turkmenistāna un Mongolija). Un arī Ķīna starptautiskajam sarakstam pieteica Pavasara sagaidīšanas svinības, kas vienlaikus ir Ķīnas Jaunais gads. Reprezentatīvajā sarakstā tika iekļautas arī dažādas amata prasmes, piemēram, Parīzes cinka jumtu meistaru amata prasme (Francija), norvēģu tautastērpu darināšana un valkāšana (Norvēģija), Alepo ziepju izgatavošana (Sīrija) u. c. Uzmanību un atzinību izpelnījās arī vairākas gastronomiskās tradīcijas, piemēram, Astūrijas sidra kultūra (Spānija), Tomjum Kung zupas gatavošana (Taizeme), Malaizijas  brokastu kultūra (Malaizija), arābu kafija (Apvienotie Arābu Emirāti, Omāna, Katara, Saudi Arābija un Jordānija) un sakē gatavošanas tradīcijas (Japāna). Spring Festival is now globally recognized (被全球公认) as a cultural treasure (文化宝藏), and it's the 44th Chinese item to be listed, putting China in first place (第一) worldwide for the number of heritage items (遗产项目). The term “intangible cultural heritage” (非物质文化遗产) in English refers to traditions, practices, and expressions passed down through generations (代代相传). The word intangible (无形的) means “not physical” or “not material”, and its opposite is tangible (有形的、可触摸的), like in “tangible assets (有形资产)”. The news is making waves. 消息一出立刻引起轰动。For example, Global Times《环球时报》 ran the headline: "China's Spring Festival inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity." 《环球时报》的标题运用了inscribe这个词，这个词让人感觉“春节”不仅是被列入了非遗名单，还有一种被刻在了人类文明的史册中的隆重感。That's a powerful title.And it's not just about the celebration—it's about the deep cultural and historical significance behind it.申遗成功的Spring Festival不仅仅是这个节日本身，还包括它背后深刻的文化和历史意义，比如它所涵盖的很多习俗和民族文化。02. “春节”申遗成功对中国以及全球意味深远A lot of people in the world are no strangers to the Spring Festival. It's just been announced that Ireland's practice of Dry Stone Construction has been included on UNESCO's list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Ken Curran of the Dry Stone Wall Association of Ireland tells us more.

The delegation from China will be led by Shanghai Vice Mayor Hua Yuan and will engage in exchanges with Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an. The Taipei City Government has previously said two sides will sign memorandums of cooperation in "smart medical care" and "zoo animal exchanges" at the forum. Taipei and Shanghai have taken turns hosting the forum every year since 2010. MOL Could Establish Hotline for Filing Bullying Complaints Labor Minister Hung Sun-han says his office is considering establishing a hotline for the general public to report workplace bullying after his office sets up a dedicated (專用) complaint channel for its own agencies. UNESCO Lists Zinc Roof Restoration Techniques as Intangile Cultural Heritage UNESCO has listed the restoration techniques for the zinc roofs of Paris as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The art involves removing old pieces of zinc, then measuring and custom-cutting new pieces using a Parisian folding machine, and assembling and fixing the pieces onto the roof. And the United Nations agency says "with nearly 80 percent of the roofs in Paris covered in zinc, the city is a living archive (檔案) of these skills that shape the unique identity of its urban landscape." Manjusha is a multidisciplinary artist and arts worker, who lives, works and creates on the intersection of Performing arts, Intangible Cultural Heritage practices and Events Management.Anya (she/ they) is a South Indian Tamil woman living on unceded Wurundjeri land and one of the dancers in Temple of Desire. The Echternach Hopping Procession, on the UNESCO Intangible World Heritage list, celebrates the life of St. Willibrord. Despite the 'high humidity', as Raoul Scholtes put it, there was another exceptional turnout for this year's Sprangpressessioun (or 'Hopping Procession') in Echternach, which pays homage to Saint Willibrord. This Anglo-Saxon Benedictine monk is revered as the founder of Echternach Abbey and every year is honoured for his gift of curing illness. Ambassador Jean McDonald, Ambassador of Ireland to Luxembourg, hosted a delegation from County Carlow, celebrating the links between Saint Willibrord and Carlow. Councillor Andrea Dalton and Dermot Mulligan, Curator of the Carlow Museum, also joined in studio to discuss the deepening re-connections between Luxembourg and Carlow through their shared history with Saint Willibrord. HE Fleur Thomas, British Ambassador to Luxembourg, hosted HE Ambassador Christopher Trott, Britain's Ambassador to the Holy See, for their very first Sprangpressessioun experience. Providing a bit of background into St. Willibrord's ancestry — Ambassador Trott detailed the saint's Northumbrian origins, before his travels brought him to Ireland, the Netherlands and then Luxembourg. Ambassador Trott also talks about his work as a diplomat in the Vatican, and the immense 'intelligence network' the Vatican has globally through priests on the ground, often in places where diplomats cannot visit or live. Patrick Dondelinger, Head of Studies for Intangible Cultural Heritage at the Ministry of Culture of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, talks about the importance of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage label for the Hopping Procession, and what this means for one who experiences the 'rite'. Raoul Scholtes — a member of the procession's organisational committee and Vice-president of the Willibrodusbauveräin (Willibrod building society) organisation responsible for the procession — ends with a call for more volunteers! This week, 1 May, marks 20 years of the rapid expansion of the EU with the accession of many former Soviet satellite states. Dr. Laima Andrikiené reflects on her role in the history of Lithuania's transformation and its current geopolitical challenges within the EU. While a well renowned Lithuanian choir are coming to Luxembourg. 20 years ago, the European Union grew bigger as, on 1 May 2004, the citizens of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia became citizens of the EU. Laima Liucija Andrikiené is an ex-politician, now working at the European Court of Auditors. She was instrumental to the independence of Lithuania, as a signatory of the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania. In this conversation, Dr Andrikiené talks about the Lithuania of her youth, of her parents youth and how the hope for independence never dimmed. Laima poignantly describes her parents meeting in Siberia, when they were both sent to the Gulag amongst many other family members. Her Grandmother always believed that her children and grandchildren would live to see a free Europe. They were right. Dr. Andrikiené remembers the day the last Soviet Troops pulled out of Lithuania and the work that had to be done then: starting an economy from scratch, giving people property back, opening up and processing tenders for foreign investment. Given the proximity to Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, we also talk in depth about what is happening in Russia / Ukraine right now. Laima has a strong message for Russian people - they also hold responsibility for what is happening and can act. For Lithuania, being a part of the European Union has meant 20 years of peace, security and financial aid- almost 30 billion euros of financial aid to build infrastructure, schools and hospitals. Life in Lithuania is now incomparable to the past under Soviet rule. Lithuanian youth recently ranked number one for happiness across the EU. It is a dynamic and competitive country . Vilnius Choir To mark 20 years of being part of the EU, a cultural delegation from Lithuania has come to Luxembourg, including Maestro Artūras Dambrauskas, the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Vilnius Choir, along with Gitana Krikščiūnaitė, Concert Activity Manager. Vilnius Choir was founded in 1970 and is recognised as a curator and ambassador of Lithuanian choral music. Professor Artūras Dambrauskas, Head of the Department of Music Theory and Pedagogy at the Kaunas Vytautas Magnum University, also conducts the Lithuanian Song Festivals, is a member of the Jury of the Lithuanian and International choral competitions, and is the Artistic Director of the International St James Festival. The Lithuanian Song Festival (also known as The Baltic Song and Dance Celebrations) celebrates 100-years this summer. The Baltic Song and Dance Celebrations is included in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2008. Building on the smoke sauna tradition of Southern Estonia (included by UNESCO on its “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”), filmmaker Anna Hints brings together a group of Estonian women to share the smoke sauna experience and to share some of their most personal stories. The result is Anna's masterfully constructed and emotionally layered Sundance award-winning documentary “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood”.   Joining Ken on the pod, Anna discusses how she conceived of the smoke sauna in her film as a safe space and a source of mutual support for the women in her film. What was the process of finding a smoke sauna, casting the film and shooting it over multiple seasons? How did she work with her cinematographer Ants Tammik to build trust with the women and create a distinctive visual portrait? In a fast changing world, it's important to ensure the preservation and protection of these invaluable cultural assets. In China, many localities are trying out an approach by blending cultural heritage with tourism. How can we strike a harmonious balance between sharing these treasures with the world and safeguarding them for generations to come? In 2020, Finland's sauna culture was added to the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Sauna culture is an integral part of the lives of the majority of the Finnish population. Interestingly, the Finnish style of sauna-going has inspired quite a few individuals in Japan to travel to Finland to learn more about sauna as a lifestyle. It seems that there is active interest in investigating foreign bathing habits in Japan. In this episode, Julie Yu-Wen Chen talks to Eetu-Antti Hartikainen, a Finnish research student at Hokkaido University to understand the sauna boom and the localization of sauna culture in Japan. Eetu-Antti also shares his research of how Japanese sauna enthusiasts form some commonly shared values to differentiate themselves from others. However, sauna enthusiasts are very diverse as a group, which is seen in the contrasting opinions and assumptions concerning how sauna space should be utilized for enjoyment. Many dishes have become famous national symbols both at home and abroad, for example Italian pizza, or British fish and chips. Whilst such dishes can create a sense of unity and identity, they can also be used to fuel nationalism, or to push a political agenda. In this edition of The Food Chain, Izzy Greenfield hears the stories behind some of the most famous national foods, some based more on myth or marketing than historical fact.
