Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems problems at work, in your personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life. And it can make you feel as though you're at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful emotion.   Anger is "an emotional state that varies in intensity from mild irritation to intense fury and rage. The instinctive, natural way to express anger is to respond aggressively. Anger is a natural, adaptive response to threats; it inspires powerful, often aggressive, feelings and behaviors, which allow us to fight and to defend ourselves when we are attacked. A certain amount of anger, therefore, is necessary to our survival.   In todays episode we will provide you tips on better identifying the underlying emotion of anger.   The three main approaches are expressing, suppressing, and calming. Expressing your angry feelings in an assertive, not aggressive, manner is the healthiest way to express anger. To do this, you have to learn how to make clear what your needs are, and how to get them met, without hurting others. Being assertive doesn't mean being pushy or demanding; it means being respectful of yourself and others.   Taking a mental health screening is one of the quickest and easiest ways to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition.  Mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety, are real, common and treatable. Effective communication is about more than just exchanging information. It's about understanding the emotion and intentions behind the information. As well as being able to clearly convey a message, you need to also listen in a way that gains the full meaning of what's being said and makes the other person feel heard and understood.   Effective communication sounds like it should be instinctive. But all too often, when we try to communicate with others something goes astray. We say one thing, the other person hears something else, and misunderstandings, frustration, and conflicts ensue. This can cause problems in your home, school, and work relationships.   For many of us, communicating more clearly and effectively requires learning some important skills. Whether you're trying to improve communication with your spouse, kids, boss, or coworkers, learning these skills can deepen your connections to others, build greater trust and respect, and improve teamwork, problem solving, and your overall social and emotional health.   In todays episode we will discuss the role of a speaker and listener, the key component to being a good speaker and a good listener. What is Psychiatry?   Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.   A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (an M.D. or D.O.) who specializes in mental health, including substance use disorders. Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.   People seek psychiatric help for many reasons. The problems can be sudden, such as a panic attack, frightening hallucinations, thoughts of suicide, or hearing "voices." Or they may be more long-term, such as feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiousness that never seem to lift or problems functioning, causing everyday life to feel distorted or out of control.   On our next episode we are joined by Ngin Ratanakromanea. Ngin is a resident psychiatrist at University of Health and Sciences and Founder of AromStation. We discuss his work and why he chose to study psychiatry. He will help us understand why he believes mental health is so important, especially in Cambodia.   Ngin's journey in studying psychiatry is a taboo field in Cambodia. Self-acceptance is self-love, but somedays it is a hard thing to do when you're caught up in the endless barrage of self-talk.   Learning self-acceptance takes work. You must set an intention and stick with it, celebrating your success and strengths when you can and shutting up the inner critic (thus forgiving yourself) when you can't.   Acceptance is not resignation, but rather a letting go of the things we can't realistically control. Self-acceptance allows us to speak to a higher self and empower ourselves to do greater things simply by getting out of our own way.   Compassion is a natural state but like all natural things will die if it doesn't receive the care it needs.   We welcome on our show Renee Lee. She is such an incredibly powerful woman who continuously shows us the power of self acceptance and self love. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June.   Even though society has progressed, there are many places in which LGBTQ+ individuals still lack protections for fundamental rights and dignity in hospitals, schools, public accommodations, and other spaces.   We continues to witness a tragic spike in violence against LGBTQ+ individuals especially youth who defy sex or gender norms, they face bullying and harassment in educational settings and are at a disproportionate risk of self-harm and death by suicide.   During LGBTQ+ Pride Month, we recognize the resilience and determination of the many individuals who are fighting to live freely and authentically. In doing so, they are opening hearts and minds, and laying the foundation for a more just and equitable world. This Pride Month, we affirm our obligation to uphold the dignity of all people, and dedicate ourselves to protecting the most vulnerable among us.   We welcome Chhum Ratha on the show. Chhum Ratha is the LGBTIQ Organizing   Team Leader at Rainbow Community Kampuche. Why won't my brain just let me relax? Why do I have such a short fuse? Why do I feel so sad? I wish I could just pull myself up by the emotional bootstraps and get happy!   These are some of the most common questions people ask. And they're all thoughts we have all had about our own emotions.   What we're really saying is, “Negative emotions are bad. I want to get rid of them.” And no wonder! Fear twists our stomachs, anger makes us feel out of control, and sadness is such a downer. Sometimes, these emotions can seem so powerful that we feel like victims of their relentless grasp.   So why do we have them? Why do our brains play such cruel tricks on us? And how can we avoid having negative emotions?   In our next episode Thay PichMony walks us through the importance of not running away from the difficult emotions but rather sit with them and listen to what they are trying to teach us about ourselves.   Taking a mental health screening is one of the quickest and easiest ways to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. EMDR - Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy. What is that? It is a psychotherapy therapy technique that utilizes sensory input such as eye movements to help people recover from trauma.   As a therapeutic approach, EMDR is based on several theories of psychotherapy, including concepts of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). EMDR techniques are used to unblock emotional processes that have been stagnated by distress.   By unblocking your emotions, you can (in a sense) reprogram your brain. Then, you can begin to heal from the fear and pain associated with the trauma and emotional distress you have experienced.   EMDR can also allow you to gain a new perspective, which can facilitate improved self-esteem and enhance your personal beliefs about your capabilities. We are joined by Phul Sophearith who is a therapist and psychologist at EMDR Cambodia.   Phul and Mony discuss EMDR and it's benefits. Significant mental health problems can and do occur in young children. Children can show clear characteristics of anxiety disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and neurodevelopmental disabilities, such as autism, at a very early age.   That said, young children respond to and process emotional experiences and traumatic events in ways that are very different from adults and older children. Stigma against mental illness involves labeling, stereotyping, and rejecting people diagnosed with mental illness. The public stigma against mental illness represents the discrimination directed at people suffering from mental illness by the larger population or the community.   Self-stigma occurs when people diagnosed with mental illness believe that they are less valued because of their mental illness. The stigma against mental illness may lead to social exclusion of people with mental illness and affect patients' willingness to seek mental health care. Culture-specific perceptions were viewed as affecting both the patients living with mental illness and people living in the community.   Cultural factors often influence beliefs about the cause and treatment of mental illness and shape the public attitudes toward people diagnosed with mental illness. Addressing the cultural beliefs associated with stigma against mental illness is of special importance in Cambodia.   We are honored to welcome So Monyrak, a licensed psychiatrist who is currently working at svay rieng provincial hospital. For many Asian, talking about mental health issues, especially to their parents, is like pulling teeth. Asian are actually three times less likely to seek mental health services than other cultures, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.   Anxiety, depression, and mental health issues aren't really topics discussed in Asian households and are considered taboo. Often times, they are told to “get over it” and “we had it so much worse than you, you should be grateful.   Cultural differences are the root cause for many Asian parents' lack of understanding and sympathy towards their children's mental health concerns. Infamously known as “tiger parents,” parents from Asia are thought to be abnormally strict towards their offspring, speak to them harshly, and punish them if they are anything less than perfect.   Another reason that Asian parents may not be supportive of their children's mental health issues is that many Asian cultures simply don't believe that they exist. Mental health is very much a Western concept with much of its development and theories originating in Western countries.   In Asian cultures, it is a black and white concept. Feeling sadness and hopelessness is believed to be one's own fault for not trying hard enough. Depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues do not hold the same significance in other cultures as it does in Western societies.   We are so honored to welcome Dari Kellom. She is a Cambodian American who is a licensed clinical social worker in the United States on our show to give us advice and ways to communicate with parents about mental illness.   Taking a mental health screening is one of the quickest and easiest ways to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. We live in an incredibly fast-paced world. Our mobile phones are constantly buzzing, social media is infinitely calling, and Netflix always has something new to binge on.   Taking the time for reflection is a bit of a lost art. Most of us, unfortunately, are living unexamined lives.   Simply put, self-reflection (also known as “personal reflection”) is taking the time to think about, meditate on, evaluate, and give serious thought to your behaviors, thoughts, attitudes, motivations, and desires. It's the process of diving deep into your thoughts and emotions and motivations and determining the great, “Why?” behind them.   Today Thay PichMony will break down what is self reflection and the importance of it within our own lives.   You probably look in a mirror most days and are as familiar with your appearance as almost any other sight.   But how often do you look inward to become more familiar with your inner self? That is the crux of self-reflection: to know your inner workings as well as you know your outer form.   Taking a mental health screening is one of the quickest and easiest ways to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. Mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety, are real, common and treatable. And recovery is possible.
