We dig deeper into ideas around: What embracing equity means and why the pendulum has to swing further the other way to remove centuries of bias. Why gender equality is imperative to a successful business Embracing diversity of thought and defining targets for gender equality How the unconscious bias impacts recruitment and the overall culture of a workplace Why technology is one of the biggest contributors to enabling an inclusive and equitable workforce Lastly, Catherine and Adam share their final piece of wisdom for women in the workplace. What does your menopause look like? The chances are it's not much like a lot of the media portrayals of the menopause! With International Women's Day fast approaching and with a theme of Embrace Equity, I wanted to take a closer look at diversity around the menopause, because it doesn't just happen to the tired-looking grey-haired white woman that seems to take centre stage in so many of the slightly depressing stock shots used in the media. Every woman goes through menopause – and it can happen at any age, some women experience premature menopause, others may have menopause triggered by medical treatment or a surgical intervention. And women of every ethnicity experience menopause and it's really important to understand that the timing and some of the symptoms and risk factors can vary quite significantly if you're black or Asian, for example. If that's you or one of your loved ones, it's essential to understand these key differences in order to take positive action and this month's guest is just the woman to help us with this. Meet Karen Arthur! She's a fashion creative, menopause diversity campaigner and host of the ground-breaking podcast Menopause Whilst Black. Karen is also the inspiration behind Wear Your Happy, because she believes passionately in the power of clothing and accessories to enhance your mood and lift your spirits. In this episode we discuss the different way that black women experience menopause and the challenges that they face. Karen talks through her own experience and the motivation behind creating her Menopause Whilst Black podcast. She's keen to open up the menopause conversation to women of all ages and ethnicities, taking the conversation out to communities and is doing a brilliant job of it. Karen is also completely inspirational on the subject of fashion and how what you wear should make you happy. She's a complete bundle of energy and positivity – tune in to hear her words of wisdom! If you've enjoyed the podcast, please give it 5 star rating and a short review on Apple podcasts, or whichever platform you listen on, I'd be so grateful. And do tell your friends and family about it too. It really does make a huge difference to the visibility of the podcast, so that more women can find the show. After all, every woman deserves to have a happy menopause. Check out the Show Notes for this episode here, where you'll find all the relevant links and references for my guest. Have you had a moment in your life when you thought "wow, I'm really becoming like my mom"? With International Women's Day just around the corner, this episode is about all things "women". Cayley, Dani, Emma and Rebecca talk about expectations, harmful stereotypes, and intergenerational communication between women in the family. Regardless of your gender or how you identify, the truth of "being authentically you" remains. Understanding where others are coming from, and being able to have a good relationship despite differing views is not easy, and definitely a work in progress. This International Women's Day we want you to celebrate how far you've come, how much you've grown, and encourage you to press on as you try to be the most authentic you.
With International Women's Day coming up, we have decided to dedicate a whole episode to female health. Joining me this week is nutritionist and founder of The Fit Clinic, Dr Michelle Hone. We will be discussing everything from hormones and fertility to the importance of carbs in a woman's diet. Michelle says women need to be treating their health and fitness differently to the way men do. She explains that a lot of the health and performance related research to date has been done in men. But with female hormones being very different, Michelle says it is not enough to simply take that information and apply it to women. “If you look at something like the fasting research or the low carbohydrate research, most of [that] has been done in men. “[Women] are not just shrunk down versions of the male physiology. Our female physiology is completely different, and we need to really honour our hormones” she says. We also chat about the impact overexercising can have on a woman's body. “When we are over exercising or undereating, we are constantly sitting in this fight or flight response state. That is what is detrimental for our hormones. That is what switches off the interaction between the ovaries and the hypothalamic amenorrhea” Michelle says. With International Women's Day on the horizon, host Alejandra Siroka recognizes the value of celebrating women. By supporting women, we remind them of their worth, improving society as a whole. With her experience coaching women and as a woman herself, Alejandra breaks down concrete language suggestions that can raise up the women in your lives. Historically, and even now, many women are minimized by their well-intentioned loved ones. By ignoring young girls' accomplishments and having separate rules for daughters and sons, we send a message that women are less than in society and culture. By changing the tone and descriptive words we use and highlighting powerful women, we can change the narrative and allow women to recognize their full potential. Tune into this week's episode of Language Alchemy for an educational discussion on positive communication with women. Learn more about Alejandra's five language tools to uplift women, the negative messages women receive, and why supporting women helps us all succeed. Quotes • “When we support women to thrive, we all thrive.” (1:44 - 1:48) • “When we contribute to women having the same opportunities as men, we have more members of our human family believing, communicating, and behaving with confidence, with trust in their capacity, dignity, and shared power. And this is the kind of mindset needed to thrive.” (1:44 - 2:12) • “I've coached lots of women, and I'm a woman who comes from a family of mostly women and who's worked in professions where most of my peers were women. I don't know one single woman who hasn't received messages about our place, worth, and role in society as dependent, vulnerable, or incapable beings. We've heard these messages from our loving and well-intentioned parents, from teachers, from authority figures, from society, from arts and culture, and other women.” (2:33 - 3:22) • “Want a world in which all female members of our human family know their value, their worth, trust their capacity, and believe that they too can realize their full potential and thrive?” (9:00 - 9:22) • “Communication is not just about the words we use. It's about the tone and how you say these words. If you call women or girls sensitive, say it with a positive tone of voice because someone sensitive has access to their feelings. And someone who has access to their feelings, has empathy and compassion for others. And someone who has empathy and compassion for others is someone who's able to take action for positive change.” (11:36 - 12:11) • "You have the wonderful opportunity to change the message for all the women in your life. You can communicate that you see their capacity and support their success." With International Women’s Day happening this past Monday, I’ve partnered with Coast Capital Savings on their campaign to put a spotlight on the disproportionate social and economic impacts that the COVID-19 has had on women, and women-owned businesses, and hopefully inspire action. To discuss this more in-depth, I have Larkin MacKenzie-Ast on the show, who is currently the Chair of the Business Women’s Network at Coast Capital Savings. Throughout the almost 6 years of this podcast, I’ve tried to emphasize the importance of using your dollars as votes for change. Of course it’s important to be frugal and find deals to save money, but it’s also important to be mindful of what your spending says about your values and realize how big of an impact your spending has on the bigger picture. For instance, maybe instead of using Amazon for everything or always going to the big box stores, seeking out local, women-run businesses instead. Especially since they’ve been the hardest hit during this pandemic. To get some ideas about how you can be part of the change, you find more resources and info about Coast Capital’s campaign on their website. Also watch their quick video about some startling statistics about how women have been affected by the pandemic. For full episode show notes, visit https://jessicamoorhouse.com/271

With International Women's Day coming up and Women's History Month, we are honored to speak to Samnang Chea. Samnang Chea is a Clinical Psychologist and Therapist Facilitator and Curriculum Designer. She has lectured at the Department of Social Work at the Royal University of Phnom Penh and is also a Senior Advisor at the Cambodian Ministry of Women Affairs. She is a well respected individual who has dedicated her work in human development and helping manage emotional obstacles with those she guides towards success. Samnang and Thay PichMony discuss parenting and child development (anti social issue, anxiety issue, anger management, autism and down syndrome). Significant mental health problems can and do occur in young children. Children can show clear characteristics of anxiety disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and neurodevelopmental disabilities, such as autism, at a very early age. That said, young children respond to and process emotional experiences and traumatic events in ways that are very different from adults and older children. Consequently, diagnosis in early childhood can be much more difficult than it is in adults. Taking a mental health screening is one of the quickest and easiest ways to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. Mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety, are real, common and treatable. And recovery is possible. With International Women's Day 2021 just around the corner, we're talking all things #ChooseToChallenge. We were fortunate enough to recently attend a Business Chicks event (in person, hooray!) and learn from the incredible former prime minister, and Australia's first female PM, Julia Gillard. As a woman in leadership, Julia has certainly had her fair share of challenges but is choosing to call out bias and inequality. We walked away absolutely buzzing after this event and want to share our highlights with you. With International Women’s Day coming up this weekend, I had the real pleasure last week of moderating a panel on inclusion and diversity during the inaugural Ambient Experience Summit held in Atlanta and organized by Constellation Research. It was a great event and I was proud to be the local host for the conference. But the highlight for me was the panel, which featured Jenn VandeZande, Editor-in-Chief of SAP’s thought leadership site, and Lately CEO and founder Kate Bradley Chernis who we just spoke with for the series. The conversation with Jenn and Kate was honest, open, blunt and eye-opening. And while quite a bit of it was sobering, we were also able to find some humor along the way. But the bottom line is that we still have a ways to go before some of the uncomfortable truths that were touched on can be turned into meaningful actions to change where things stand today. And I think Jenn, Kate and the Constellation team (Ray Wang, Nicole France, Liz Miller, Meghan O'Neill Ruona and Aubrey Coggins) for making this session a part of a great agenda. Thanks to Constellation also for making this video available for us to feature here in the series.
Joshua Kissi is the creative director and photographer who picked up a camera at the age of seventeen. He’s the co-founder of Street Etiquette, known for their documentation of men’s style with a focus on black men. He joins The Dropcast this week to talk about his ongoing mission of empowering creatives through his latest ventures including TONL. Joshua joins hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas in a moment of appreciation for the new Air Max 95 “De Lo Mío.” The quick hits continue with Aimé Leon Dore’s color-blocked New Balance 827s which will have Jian dressing up as both a Chinatown grandma and an ALD model. While these are the sneakers that will get people scrambling, Supreme’s Nike Air Force 1s will be as accessible as sneakers can get. The shoes will essentially be their version of the CDG Play Converses — relatively affordable sneakers where the supply meets demand (3:49). Paris Fashion Week saw the debut of Virgil’s Arc’teryx collection along with new off white-colored Off-White Air Jordan 4s (6:52). In other news, many people don’t quite realize that Virgil’s brand is another name for crack (9:26). Speaking about layers of meaning, Balenciaga’s FW20 show brought a new end-of-the-world aesthetic to the runway by addressing climate change and rising sea levels (9:36). Last Friday, YEEZY Season 8’s surprise PFW presentation showcased polarizing but nonetheless Noah-verified shoes (10:55). Unfortunately, Tokyo Fashion Week which was next on the lineup has been hit with a precautionary coronavirus cancellation. While Milan Fashion Week reached an early conclusion due to an outbreak, fashion weeks in Shanghai, Beijing, and Seoul have all been either postponed or canceled (13:53). The cast notes the essential need to stay hygienic and be aware of unwarranted racism particularly in diverse regions like Jackson Heights where Joshua calls home. With International Women’s Day coming up, the hosts give shout outs to the women in their lives including those at Highsnob (16:25). Their appreciation and best wishes are extended to Megan Thee Stallion who’s going through trouble with her music label 1501 Ent. after Roc Nation encouraged her to renegotiate her contract. This episode’s Question of the Week (QOTW) asked “How do you grow to have a lucrative career as a photographer?” (18:11). The Dropcast listeners called in with a series of inquiries that asked Joshua to reflect back on his own career by making the important distinction between celebrity photographers and photographers who photograph celebrities and commenting on smiling with your eyes. The next QOTW which will be posted on Highsnobiety’s Instagram so make sure to leave a voicemail on The Dropcast hotline at 833-HIGHSNOB (833-444-4766) for a chance to be featured in a future episode. Moon in 4K: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ilifg26TZrI Venus Sensor Contest: https://www.herox.com/VenusRover/guidelines The Moon in 4K NASA with the help of the high-resolution camera of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, has recreated the Apollo 13 crew’s trip around the Moon, only this time it’s in4k. The video uses data gathered from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft to recreate some of the stunning views of the Moon that the Apollo 13 astronauts saw on their journey around the farside in 1970. These visualizations, in 4K, depict many different views of the lunar surface, starting with earthset and sunrise and concluding with the time Apollo 13 reestablished radio contact with Mission Control. Also depicted is the path of the free return trajectory around the Moon, and a continuous view of the Moon throughout that path. All views have been sped up for timing purposes — they are not shown in “real-time.” Link in the Show Notes. The Daily Beast Reports thatThe Pentagon wants to extend the reach of its satellites tens of thousands miles toward the moon. And it’s working on a high-tech, atomic-powered “nuclear thermal propulsion” engine to make it possible. Right now, almost all of the satellites between here and the moon and placed in orbit, then left to fall around Earth unless acted on by another force. The military’s goal is to deploy maneuverable satellites into the vast space between the Earth and the moon—“cislunar” space, it’s called—before China gets there with its own spacecraft. But this isn’t the first time the U.S. government has tried to develop an atomic rocket. And there’s no guarantee the same problems that ended previous efforts won’t also end this one. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which oversees the atomic rocket effort, explains in its budget proposal that: “The capability afforded by this [nuclear thermal propulsion] will expand the operating presence of the U.S. in space to the cislunar volume and enhance domestic operations to a new high-ground, which is in danger of being defined by the adversary, here being China The U.S. and Chinese space agencies and even private corporations are eager to mine the moon for minerals that could support deep-space missions, potentially including humanity’s first trip to Mars. DARPA’s budget request for 2021asks for $21 million for the “Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations” program, or DRACO. Congress gave DARPA $10 million in 2020 to start studying the DRACO engine. The 2021 budget would allow the agency to start building components. The plan is for DARPA to test DRACO before handing it over to the U.S. Air Force for routine operations. DRACO is basically, it’s a small nuclear reactor atop a space rocket. The reactor heats up a propellant—hydrogen, for example—that accelerates through a nozzle, pushing the satellite in the opposite direction. These Nuclear-thermal engines aren’t for launching from Earth’s surface. They’re for cruising long distances through space or maneuvering a lot while keeping closer to Earth. The moon is 240,000 miles from Earth. Most man-made satellites orbit no more than a few thousand miles from Earth’s surface. The United States and China are both in a scramble to fill that gap. Would you like to make $15,000According to Tampa Bay’s Channel 10 News, you can enter your designs for NASA next Rover for exploring Venus. After sending four rovers to Mars -- with a fifth launching soon -- NASA is now eyeing Venus for future research missions. And, the space agency needs the public's help to design the perfect rover that can survive Venus's "hellish" landscape. On Venus -- the second planet from the Sun -- temperatures can reach more than 840 degrees Fahrenheit. The surface pressure on the planet can also be 90 times that of Earth. That level of pressure can turn lead into a puddle and easily crush a nuclear-powered submarine, NASA said. Many missions have visited Venus, but only about a dozen have reached the surface of the planet before being destroyed by the heat and pressure. Soviet Vega 2 was the last spacecraft to touch Venus in 1985. That’s 35 years ago. Despite Venus's "hellish" environment, scientists say it and Earth are "basically sibling plants." But, they say at one point Venus took a turn and became inhospitable. More on that in our episode on Climate Change Jonathan Sauder, a senior mechatronics engineer at JPL and principal investigator for the Automaton Rover for Extreme Environments concept says that "By getting on the ground and exploring Venus, we can understand what caused Earth and Venus to diverge on wildly different paths and can explore a foreign world right in our own backyard," The "Exploring Hell: Avoiding Obstacles on a Clockwork Rover" competition aims to get public input for a sensor that could be incorporated into a future Venus rover. NASA said the biggest challenge is designing a sensor that doesn't rely on electronic systems, which fail during exposure to more than 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Submissions are open now through May 29. The first-place prize is $15,000, second place is $10,000 and third place is $5,000. The link to apply will be in the show notesAccording to NASA.com Katherine Johnson passed away Feb. 24, 2020 at age 101, after living a life filled with trail-blazing achievements. But why should you care, and why was she important? With International Women’s day coming up on Sunday March 8th, let’s take a look! Being handpicked to be one of three black students to integrate West Virginia’s graduate schools is something that many people would consider one of their life’s most notable moments, but it’s just one of the breakthroughs that have marked Katherine Johnson’s long and remarkable life. Born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, by thirteen, she was attending the high school on the campus of historically black West Virginia State College. At eighteen, she enrolled in the college itself, graduated with highest honors in 1937 and took a job teaching at a black public school in Virginia. In 1953, Johnson began working in the all-black West Area Computing section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics’ (NACA’s) Langley laboratory. Just two weeks into her tenure in the office, she was assigned to a project in the Flight Research Division, and Katherine’s temporary position soon became permanent. In 1957, Johnson provided some of the math for the 1958 document Notes on Space Technology, a compendium of a series of lectures given by engineers in the Flight Research Division and the Pilotless Aircraft Research Division (PARD). Engineers from those groups formed the core of the Space Task Group, the NACA’s first official foray into space travel, and Katherine, who had worked with many of them since coming to Langley, “came along with the program” as the NACA became NASA later that year. She did trajectory analysis for Alan Shepard’s May 1961 mission Freedom 7, America’s first human spaceflight. Then In 1960, she coauthored a report called, Determination of Azimuth Angle at Burnout for Placing a Satellite Over a Selected Earth Position, laying out the equations describing an orbital spaceflight in which the landing position of the spacecraft is specified. It was the first time a woman in the Flight Research Division had received credit as an author of a research report. In 1962, as NASA prepared for the orbital mission of John Glenn, Katherine Johnson was called upon to do the work that she would become most known for. The complexity of the orbital flight had required the construction of a worldwide communications network, linking tracking stations around the world to IBM computers in Washington, DC, Cape Canaveral, and Bermuda. The computers had been programmed with the orbital equations that would control the trajectory of the capsule in Glenn’s Friendship 7 mission, from blast off to splashdown, but the astronauts were wary of putting their lives in the care of the electronic calculating machines, which were prone to hiccups and blackouts. As a part of the preflight checklist, Glenn asked engineers to “get the girl”—Katherine Johnson—to run the same numbers through the same equations that had been programmed into the computer, but by hand, on her desktop mechanical calculating machine. “If she says they’re good,’” Katherine Johnson remembers the astronaut saying, “then I’m ready to go.” Glenn’s flight was a success, and marked a turning point in the competition between the United States and the Soviet Union in space. So today, we remember her life and her contributions to space travel.
If you are connected to the online accounting community, you probably have noticed that there has been a plethora of noteworthy industry-related conversation emerging recently within the Twittersphere. From the future of bookkeeping to debunking whether certain apps are truly powered by AI, these conversations have sparked lively back and forths, and a variety of subsequent content pieces. As each hot button topic has unfolded, so have a number of carefully crafted responses of so from practitioners & “industry experts” alike. Even though their individual responses & opinions have varied, the ones that have gotten the most airtime have all been connected by a common thread: they were all produced by men. I'm not knocking the content that these guys wrote, but the cacophony reached a point where some of us started to wonder, where are the women in all of this? Are we somehow getting lost in the noise or do we need have to still shout to be heard in the first place?Women's voices are still dramatically underrepresented in the world of accounting, despite the fact that women make up the majority of the profession. 61.3% of the profession at large is female, and yet we still see a predominate number of men highlighted online & at conferences as “authorities” on topics related to the profession. It's clear that there is a disconnect that goes deeper than the surface because more women than ever before are graduating accounting expertise, yet the top positions of the profession are still overwhelmingly male-dominated and the wide gender pay gap within the profession isn't showing any signs of closing. As one might guess, the statistics for representation & pay for women of color within the profession are even more abysmal. These inequalities are hardly unique to the accounting profession, but the issues are pressing all the same, so it's time for us to set aside some time to start addressing them head-on.With International Women's Day on the horizon, and with it the release of Practice Ignition's list of Top 50 Women in Accounting, it seemed like the perfect time to spark a conversation with women in accounting and provide a place for them to share their stories and opinions around the status of women in the profession. Rather than sitting around waiting for someone else to pass the mic, I collaborated with Practice Ignition to host a virtual panel discussion featuring some of the incredible & inspiring women in the accounting space. The goal of the moment was simple: to shed some light on the experiences, opinions, and triumphs of women in accounting. The panel discussion happened live Practice Ignition's Facebook page the morning of March 8th, and featured some of their Top 50 Women In Accounting finalists, as well as a diverse array of other female voices from across the profession. For those who couldn't make it live, I captured the conversation in this special episode of the Finding Fearless Podcast. The conversation covered a variety of questions about their entrepreneurial ambitions and the current position of women in the accounting profession, along with talking about the ways that we can elevate more women to within the profession to share their voices & be heard. Although there were only so many questions we could tackle.

With International Women’s day coming up, we wanted to do a special edition of the Podcast. The role of women in business a topic that is becoming more and more a top priority for companies, but also one where there’s still a major ongoing debate and not necessarily a consensus yet. To discuss this, we’ve invited Anne Engerant, currently SVP of RB Health in Latin America. Anne joined RB in France, her home country, in 1997, after five years spent at P&G and a two-year sabbatical between her first two maternities during which she went back to university to and worked with NGOs taking care of homeless people and Aids affected persons. After the birth of her third daughter, in 2000 and another sabbatical spent at writing a novel, she moved in 2001 to UK to lead the European business for AirWick. She was promoted as Regional Marketing Director for South Asia in 2003, based in New Delhi (India). Here she turned India into a growth machine and … conceived her fourth daughter. After a seven month long maternity break in France, she moved back to UK in 2007 as Global Category Director Sustainability to shape, with a cross functional team, the RB Carbon 20 Program aiming at reducing RB´s carbon footprint. Sustainability is a family passion. Anne´s husband is a gardener from the Royal Horticulture Society of England and a Beekeeper from the Royal Beekeeping Society of Belgium. In 2008 Anne was promoted General Manager of Belgium where she spent two years before moving back to UK as Global Category Director for AirWick and then the RB sore throat business (Strepsils, Graneodin). She (finally?) moved to Mexico in 2014 to complete the integration of the BMS Health brands and factory and put the business to double digit growth. In 2018, she got promoted as SVP latam health and led the integration of Mead Johnson acquisition and the creation of the RB Health business unit across Latam. Main topics covered in the Podcast How women’s position in business has changed throughout the years How Anne and RB have encouraged the promotion of female talent The evolution of the topic in the next years Actions to be taken to promote gender diversity within an organization
Hello March! With International Women's Day just around the corner, it only made sense for the theme this month on YGTMAMA to be inspirational women! We are diving deep into the triumphant stories of overcoming. These women push past the limits of the societal norms, they have figured out how to design a life that suits them. Deirdre Slattery is a retired physical education teacher and sports coach turned transformational fitness and health coach, a personal trainer, 5x published and 1st place fitness model, 4x published co-author and lead author of her first book launching this year. Her background is Bachelor of Kinesiology, and Bachelor of Education. She is a motivational speaker and solo mama to a teenage girl. In this episode, Deirdre and Sabrina start off strong and they dive right into what it means to own your life. Deirdre admits that it didn't come easy for her. She spent many years doing what she thought she should be doing, not what set her soul on fire. She talks about the courage it takes to follow those nudges that our intuition gives us so often. They speak to the ease and comfort that comes along with "one-day" goals. "One day when I ___, then I will___." This inspiring mama right here can attest to what it means to take the reins back and get back into the driver's seat of your own life. It is normal to have excuses. "I'm too; old, poor, ugly, fat, unworthy . . . " Well, this beautiful FORTY-SIX-year-old woman is here to prove to you that those are all just stories that happen between your ears. “It's about being stronger than your excuses.” ~ Deirdre Slattery Deirdre explains that our power really comes from how we manage our excuses and emotions. We all get them; negative thoughts and self-talk, lack of will power, defeat, feelings of unworthiness. This is our egos trying to keep us small and away from our full potential. It is sooo often, especially in motherhood, guilt, and fear that fuel these emotions and anxieties. She encourages our listeners to strive for what truly brings us joy and makes us happy. As mamas, we have a responsibility to our children to model the behaviors we want to see in them. As a mama to a teenage girl, Deirdre shares the immense importance in this. "I've got beautiful eyes watching my every move. When I step up into my power, she is my biggest cheerleader and is always in my corner." ~ Deirdre Slattery The girls chat about what it means to be a BOSS MAMA and that really the definition is having control over your life. Being the sole decision maker when it comes to the energy you allow into your circle and having control over how you spend your time. Time is truly the only renewable resource, how are you going to spend it? Deirdre shares that she wasn't unhappy in her small town teaching job, she just knew her soul craved more and that she was destined to be more, for her daughter and herself. Now she inspires women everywhere to step into the best version of themselves, without the guilt and the shame that can accompany such success. Deirdre will be sharing her website with our community soon and her online programs but for now you can catch up with her on Instagram, and her business Facebook page.
This month SuperHuman Women is focusing on female empowerment, and how advertisers, brands and businesses engage consumers and make a difference. With International Women’s Day having just passed and Women’s History Month in full swing, brands and advertisers all over the world are jumping onboard the female empowerment wagon. But, not all are gaining the goodwill they expect. But, the bigger question is SHOULD they get involved? And, more importantly, how and where should they do it? Today, we’re talking to Tiffanie Darke, Editor in Chief of A&E Networks, about the groundbreaking series, History, Herstory, which shines a light on overlooked women in history. It is a great example of how a brand can contribute to a global conversation in a significant way. We asked her how this campaign came about and how other brands can better engage female audiences.
First we turn to a journey – the journey of Nishiyuu. Aboriginal youth recently trekked over 1,500 kilometers on foot through extreme conditions to promote solidarity and action around the issues facing indigenous peoples. We hear words from Isaac Kawapit also known as the “The White Wizard” and an interview by Lorraine Chisholm from RedEye Radio with Matthew Mukash. So, are you a feminist? What does that even mean? Artist, activist, and educator Kim Crosby says there are many different feminisms. With International Women's Day on March 8th Riaz Sayani –Mulji met with Kim Crosby to talk about feminism, organizing and more. Here's part of their conversation. For this story we turn to Halifax. In the 1960's the municipal government, against the wishes of residents, razed the historic Black settlement of Africville. Now once again there is a struggle over space and community. This time the fight is over what could be a community centre. Talking Radical Radio's Scott Neigh [Ni] spoke with Rev. Rhonda Britton of Cornwallis Street Baptist Church in Halifax, Nova Scotia about the struggle to preserve the closed St. Patrick's-Alexandra school building as a community space. We have just passed the two year anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster. Chie Matsumoto is an anti-nuclear and labour activist in Japan who gave an updated on the situation to Asian Pacific Current's Jiselle Hanna. Finally Bob Wiseman is the man that wrote and peformed our theme song. He also has a new album out and we get to share with you a great song called “The Reform Party at Burning Man.”
