Which Ginger Ale is best? This week we are finally getting to ginger ales. We've all seen the main players in this category, but our experience says they are a little weak on the ginger flavor. Instead we are trying out some of the pricier players in the game in hopes of getting more of that ginger. The contenders are Fever Tree, Q, Reed's and Zevia. Please like and subscribe and if you have any suggestions, let us know by tweeting us @tastetestdummies or email us at nickandjohnpodcast@gmail.com. SPOILER! Below is a list of which ginger ale corresponds to which numbered glass it was in: 1. Q 2. Reed's 3. Fever Tree 4. Zevia

That's the word on Dixon Dedman's new 2XO whiskey brand, that's said to stand up against much higher-priced bottles of bourbon. Dedman was the master blender and cofounder of Kentucky Owl & left a few years after Stoli acquired the brand. As the story goes “The name 2XO means “two times oak.” Admittedly, the palate punch that results isn't for everyone. James Elliott - Filigree & Shadow - in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.filigreeandshadow.co/ Founded in 2013, the name Filigree & Shadow emanates from a twice-borrowed reference to the song by Fever Tree. The late Robert Hermann wrote, “His series of ethereal and complex fragrances established him as a first-class natural perfumer, proving small indie perfumers can more than hold their own when running with the big dogs.
We're here to help you make it through Dry January We've made it through another year and here we are with our livers beaten senseless through the holiday celebrations. If you're giving the body a break and trying to go dry we have some good news. There are some pretty decent options available now to allow you to still have drink with your friends. People always have questions about the Beer Guys drinking NA beers. Hey, we like beer, but we know that too much of it is not a good thing. We also like the taste of beer so having an occasional day, week, month where we ease up on the alcohol can be a good thing. Speaking of just doing a day or so... we heard of Damp January this year. That's kind of the principle we've been going by. It can still be beneficial to take a break even if you don't go totally dry. With that in mind... here are a few of our favs. NA Beers Athletic Brewing - Most of what we've tried from Athletic is solid. They are our favorite all around NA brewer Partake - Another one that is mostly solid. Bravus - Their Peanut Butter Dark is our single fav NA beer, and the one that would be most difficult for us to tell from an alcoholic version of the same style Ceria - Only a couple offerings right now but they are tasty. If you're in CA or CO, they offer NA brews infused with THC and CBD. (Ceria was founded by Dr. Keith Villa, the creator of Blue Moon.) One to pass on.... Hairless Dog. We tried several of their offerings and did not find any we thought were palatable. NA Spirits NA spirits have some catching up to do with NA beer. The quality is just not there and they are VERY far off from tasting anything like what they are trying to replace. Most brands do say they are meant to be mixers rather than drinking them straight. We highly suggest you follow this guideline. The "bite" and mouthfeel is the hard part here. Some brands add pepper and capsaicin to try and mimic the heat, but it's still a long shot We recently tried Drink Monday gin and whiskey. They are some of the better ones we've tried, but still not sippers. Nate made an NA Old Fashioned with them and it was a decent cocktail, but not really passable as an Old Fashioned. BIG WINNER - Lyre's Italian Spritz is pretty tasty. Even on it's on. A cocktail of 1 part Lyre's, 1 part Drink Monday gin, over ice and topped with Fever Tree tonic made a very enjoyable cocktail that would pass for a gin and tonic. If you're shooting for Dry January we're rooting for you. We know you can do it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Which Tonic water is best? The theme of this NICE episode is mixing. We start the episode by mixing two unexpected products, and finish by testing half of the classic Gin and Tonic. The Contenders are Canada Dry, Fever Tree, and Schweppes. Please like and subscribe, and if you have any suggestions tweet us at @tastetestdummies or email at nickandjohnpodcast@gmail.com. SPOILER! You probably know by now that Fever-Tree are big supporters of Drinks Adventures. In fact I can say without any exaggeration that I would not be sitting here talking to you if it hadn't been for their support over the last few years, so thanks very much to Andy and Caroline at Fever-Tree Australia. Given this relationship I reckon it's overdue that we get Fever-Tree ambassador Trish Brew on for a short chat about one of their new mixers. And this is a product I'm personally excited about, Fever-Tree Distillers Cola. I do enjoy my dark spirits and it's surely time we had a cola that was purpose built for mixing with the premium products we're drinking these days. Fever-Tree Distillers Cola is made up of Caribbean Kola Nuts, Tahitian Limes, and a selection of distilled botanicals and spices, resulting in a deliciously rich and balanced mixer for your favourite dark spirits. With no artificial sweeteners or colours, Distillers Cola allows the ingredients to speak for themselves with top notes of refreshing lime, complex spices and a hint of vanilla to finish. Where leading cola brands use their strong flavour profiles to mask the flavour of spirits, Distillers Cola has been designed to complement and elevate the flavour of whiskies from the finest distilleries around the world. With whisky and cola making up 28 per cent of all mixed drinks, Distillers Cola fits perfectly into the Fever-Tree range to accommodate dark spirits drinkers who want to mix with the best.

In this week's episode of Cocktail College, Tim explores the Whiskey Highball with Iain Griffiths from New York's Hidden Leaf, Midnight Cafe, and Midnight Theatre. In its simplest form, this drink can be something as basic as a splash of Scotch, some fizzy water, and a few cubes of ice. Or, if you're taking it to extreme levels, the Whiskey Highball can present a study in such topics as temperature, pouring skills, carbonation, and nucleation points. Listen on to discover Iain's Whiskey Highball techniques — and don't forget to like, review, and subscribe!Iain Griffiths' Whiskey Highball Recipe Ingredients 2 ounces whiskey Club soda, such as Fever-Tree, to top Spear Ice Directions In a chilled highball glass, add whiskey, then ice, and then club soda. “My approach to tasting is to try to make it as approachable and accessible to as many people as possible.”In this episode we talk with Hazel Lee, an international chocolate judge and the creator of Taste with Colour: The Chocolate Tasting Flavor Map. We talk about how Hazel got into chocolate, what led to the development of her flavor map, and how it's used to deepen and inform the experience of tasting chocolate for both newcomers and experienced tasters.A few months back we asked artist Katie Clark Gabbard to put paint to canvas in response to tasting beers and chocolates without knowing what they were. The results were illuminating, and today Hazel will share with us how she uses the connection between flavor and color to help people better understand what they're tasting in their favorite chocolate.Chocolate and chocolate makers mentioned in this episode include La Iguana Chocolate, Mission Cupuaçu 70%, Hotel Chocolat, and Karuna Chocolate. In this episode we discussed Bean to Barstool Episode 01: Personal Flavor Vocabularies, Episode 16: Cultural Beer Language with Dr. J., and Episode 36: Painting Flavor with Artist Katie Clark Gabbard. The music for this episode is from the song “Umbrella” by my dear friend, indie folk musician Anna ps. You can find out more about Anna's music in the show notes or at her website annapsmusic.com, where you can also get in touch to book her to play at your brewery or other establishment.Hazel Lee is the Creator of Taste With Colour®: The Chocolate Tasting Flavour Map, an international chocolate judge, home bean to bar chocolate maker and cocoa adventurer. She studied Food Science at Leeds University and currently works full time as a Liquid Development Manager for Fever-Tree. He promised to help me like it because I find it hard to take down. Fortified wines: When it comes to vermouth, Dolin reigns supreme in many cases. Valerie also makes use of Routin. Marshall said you could always substitute in a different style of fortified wine like Cocchi Americano or Lillet Blanc. He also said you need more Sherry in your cabinet. His preferred brand is Lustau. Want to keep up with their new concept Madame George? One of the first takes on things will be Marshall sprucing up the cloying Midori Sour. Local comedians Dave Standal and Tim Jones join us on todays show to discuss a couple of their favorite beverages when out at a club. We compare a bar rail gin and tonic to one that we upscaled a little by adding better quality of the same exact ingredients, and a rum and coke with again slightly upscaled ingredients, and we compare the two against each other to see if it would be worth charging a few extra bucks per drink at the bar. The one caveat is that we used a 3:1 ratio of alcohol to mixers, and some bars just don't do that. In this episode we sample and review gin and tonics made with Karkov Dry London Gin with Schweppes tonic water facing off against Boreal Juniper Gin from Vikre Distillery paired with Fever Tree's Premium Indian tonic water. Then we dive into rum and cokes (or Cuba Libre's) with Captain Morgan and Diet Coke up against Real McCoy 12 year and Fever Tree's Distillers Cola. What do adaptogens, nootropics and botanicals have to do with the future of social drinking? If you ask Kin Euphorics co-founder and CEO Jen Batchelor, the answer is “quite a bit.” And, based on Kin's trajectory, it's hard to argue with her. Founded in 2017, Kin Euphorics is based on the idea that there needed to be a better-for-you alternative to alcohol when decompressing after work or enjoying a night out with friends. Available in five SKUs tied to distinct use occasions, the beverages are formulated with functional ingredients said to enhance mood and relieve stress, including,, depending on variety, Rhodiola Rosea, 5-HTP, Gaba and L-Theanine. Since its inception, Kin has raised over $10 million dollars in venture capital, a figure that reflects the brand's remarkable growth, particularly via e-commerce. While 90% of the company's revenue is currently derived from direct-to-consumer sales, Kin is in the midst of an aggressive push into brick and mortar retail. The company recently announced the hires of three former Fever-Tree executives tasked with expanding distribution of the brand into large retailers in all channels of trade. In an interview featured in this episode, Batchelor discussed the inspiration for and development of Kin, why the brand adopted “euphorics” as part of its branding despite the word's association with drug culture, how Soylent provided a rough template for the company's business strategy and the brand's association with sober-curious lifestyles. She also explained how Kin has built an effective D2C strategy, applying learnings from success at upscale retailer Erewhon to other chains, and how she views me-too brands that have emerged in recent years. Show notes: 0:49: Interview: Jen Batchelor, Co-Founder & CEO, Kin Euphorics – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif spoke with Batchelor about Kin's recent company retreat, the impact that growing up in Saudi Arabia had on her belief system, how she weaved together cultural experiences and Ayurvedic methodology into the creation of the brand and why, despite its unconventional positioning, traditional business fundamentals have been critical to Kin's development. She also explained how Kin became an “accidental D2C brand,” how supermodel Bella Hadid became an investor and partner, the ambitious goals for the company's new commercial team, and why Batchelor is enthusiastic about some emerging non-alcoholic social brands — and less so about others. Brands in this episode: Kin Euphorics, Soylent, Ghia
