This episode did not come easy. It became more of my mini-version of the road to Ninevah - to quote Jonah, "do I really have to do this?" Yeah. I did. The curse of being able to see what is going on in an SEO strategy from the outside, is the inability to unsee it. I did not name names because I wanted to speak freely about my opinion about what I saw. Figuring this out, brought me no joy. PLUS big news on the indexer front. Can't wait to share it. Welcome to Season 4 Episode 25 of Confessions of an SEO Episode 3 of Confessions of an SEO Mountain Edition 2024. This episode is subtle, well, it is ABOUT something subtle. Human behavior and how hard it is to take in new information when we know what we know. How challenging it came be and yet, its kind of easy eventually - something comes in hot and totally new eventually becomes accepted as if it was ALWAYS that way. Welcome to Season 4 Episode 24 of Confessions of an SEO Episode 2 of Confessions of an SEO Mountain Edition 2024. This week brought my voice back and the jet lag induced exhaustion seems to be behind me. While I was sleeping it off seems like the world kind of got a little interested in my theory that sites that were hit by the 2023 September HCU after seeing impressions increase like crazy in the spring/summer AND that were using TOC links on all their content - was due to the canonical attribution system not working - or not working for a while. An unintended side-effect was the number of assumptions in the industry about the transparency (or lack thereof) shining through many of the objections to the possibility that the canonical attribution system either is or has been uncoupling jump links from the listed canonical. Some even just focused on ONE THING - namely the URL with hashtags. Jump links have hashtags as to other html features - languages, comments etc Sitelinks are a display feature in SERPs as a visual display of the TOC jumplinks. The fact they CAN appear in SERPS does not provide proof that the canonical attribution isn't broken. We used the site when we went away for an anniversary trip and had a beautiful riverfront apt in Wilmington, NC for a fraction of the price of a hotel. Priceline: I'm a huge fan of their Name Your Own Price feature, which has helped us score plane tickets, hotel rooms, and car rental half off the advertised prices. Better Bidding: Speaking of bids, there are forums and sites online that can help you figure out what it will take to your bid accepted. ou might also want to keep an eye for flash deals with airlines like Southwest where you can score huge discounts on flights for select cities. The guest audio (as is always the case) sounded a bit boomy, and at times the host got a little soft. You can make your guest sound better by recording separate tracks with a tool like the https://supportthisshow.com/zoomp4 (Zoom Podtrack P4) or a service like https://supportthisshow.com/squadcast (Squadcast). Then you can run the guest's side of the conversation through the https://supportthisshow.com/descript (Descript )software and turn on their Studio Sound tool that makes bad audio sound amazing. DescriptionPodcast Rodeo Show: Reviews and First Impressions of Your Podcast Listen to a fine collection of surreal and hilarious AI-generated short stories read by Bram Stoker Award Finalist and Clarion West 2015 Graduate Thersa Matsuura and sound designer Rich Pav. Check it out https://uncannyrobotpodcast.com/ (https://uncannyrobotpodcast.com/) What I Liked About This EpisodeThe introduction let me know what was coming. The audio quality was good (especially for only being their 2nd podcast). I loved that they were going to provide some "behind the scenes" and they are going to do it toward the end of the show (which keeps the stories at the front) I love that this is original. It's not a movie review, true crime, bro-cast, etc. It ticks one of the signs of a good podcast which is, "Information you can't get anyplace else." What I Thought Could Use Some PolishingThe introduction of the first episode was a lil' clunky. It sounded like you were winging it. You're talking about last week's show, but you couldn't remember what it was.... I would've stopped, regrouped, and taken another stab at it. As this was the second episode, this is somewhat normal, and probably a little bit of nerves. You did a great job of introducing the second story. So the intro (after the voice-over person) could be as simple as: Rich: "Hey, Thersa." Thersa, "Hey Rich, What do you have today?" Rich: "I've got an AI story about Elvis being alive. How about you? Thersa: "I've got a story about Jim Morrison" Where should we start? Then you pick a story and go (and make sure not to spoil the story). The Elvis story pulled me in, but it started to lose me when it went into stalker mode. The Goal Of This ShowThis podcast rodeo show aims to help you make the best episodes and grow your downloads. OpenBSD 6.8 has been released, NetBSD 9.1 is out, OpenZFS devsummit report, BastilleBSD’s native container management for FreeBSD, cleaning up old tarsnap backups, Michael W. Lucas’ book sale, and more. NOTES This episode of BSDNow is brought to you by Tarsnap (https://www.tarsnap.com/bsdnow) Headlines OpenBSD 6.8 (https://www.openbsd.org/68.html) Released Oct 18, 2020. (OpenBSD's 25th anniversary) NetBSD 9.1 Released (https://www.netbsd.org/releases/formal-9/NetBSD-9.1.html) The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce NetBSD 9.1, the first update of the NetBSD 9 release branch. It represents a selected subset of fixes deemed important for security or stability reasons, as well as new features and enhancements. OpenZFS Developer Summit 2020 (https://klarasystems.com/articles/openzfs-developer-summit-part-1/) As with most other conferences in the last six months, this year’s OpenZFS Developer’s Summit was a bit different than usual. Held via Zoom to accommodate for 2020’s new normal in terms of social engagements, the conference featured a mix of talks delivered live via webinars, and breakout sessions held as regular meetings. This helped recapture some of the “hallway track” that would be lost in an online conference. • After attending the conference, I wrote up some of my notes from each of the talks • Part 2 (https://klarasystems.com/articles/openzfs-developer-summit-part-2/) ZFS and FreeBSD Support Klara offers flexible Support Subscriptions for your ZFS and FreeBSD infrastructure, simply sign up for our monthly subscription! (https://klarasystems.com/support/) News Roundup BastilleBSD - native container management for FreeBSD (https://fibric.hashnode.dev/bastillebsd-native-container-management-for-freebsd) Some time ago, I had the requirement to use FreeBSD in a project, and soon the question came up if Docker and Kubernetes can be used. On FreeBSD, Docker is not very well supported, and even if you can get it running, Linux is used in a Docker container. My experience with Docker on FreeBSD is awful, and so I started looking for alternatives. A quick search on one of the most significant online search engines led me to Jails and then to BastilleBSD. Tarsnap – cleaning up old backups (https://dan.langille.org/2020/09/10/tarsnap-cleaning-up-old-backups/) I use Tarsnap for my critical data. Case in point, I use it to backup my Bacula database dump. I use Bacula to backup my hosts. The database in question keeps track of what was backed up, from what host, the file size, checksum, where that backup is now, and many other items. Losing this data is annoying but not a disaster. It can be recreated from the backup volumes, but that is time consuming. As it is, the file is dumped daily, and rsynced to multiple locations. MWL - BookSale (https://mwl.io/archives/8009) For those interested in such things, I recently posted my 60,000th tweet. This prodded me to try an experiment I’ve been pondering for a while. Over at my ebookstore, two of my books are now on a “Name Your Own Price” sale. You can get git commit murder and PAM Mastery for any price you wish, with a minimum of $1. You might also want to keep an eye for flash deals with airlines like Southwest where you can score huge discounts on flights for select cities. How does Priceline seem to always keep your attention? Whether it's a funny commercial or a Twitter chat, Priceline always has an answer to what their audience wants. How do they do it? Listening of course! Today, social media manager, Karianne Stinson, joins us and discusses exactly that. Andiamo! About Karianne Stinson Karianne is the Social Media Manager at Priceline.com. She is a lover of coffee and wine, a karaoke superstar and has an incurable case of wanderlust, which fits her well, considering where she works. Tweet with her: @karianne About Priceline.com Priceline first became known for its Name Your Own Price system, where travelers would name their price for airline tickets, hotel rooms, car rentals and vacation packages. While the purchaser can select a general location, service level and price; the hotel, rental car company and/or airline (as well as the exact location of the hotel and the exact flight itinerary) is disclosed only after the purchase has gone through, with no rights to cancel. Priceline's cut of the proceeds is the difference between the price an individual named and the price charged by the service establishment. More recently, it has added a more traditional model, called Express Deals, where travelers are presented prices but are not told the name of the establishment. Travelers can still choose to name their price for airline tickets, hotel rooms and rental cars. The number of airlines, hotels and car rental company participants in the name your own price program has increased as these suppliers utilize this opaque market Priceline created to sell their perishable inventory without lowering prices through other traditional sales channels. Priceline now also sells discounted cruises, as well as tours and attractions. In 2002 Priceline licensed its "Name Your Own Price" travel system to eBay. During November 2007, Priceline “permanently” eliminated all booking fees on published airfares. In April 2014, Priceline.com Incorporated announced that it has changed its name to "the Priceline Group Inc." This corporate name change was intended to create a clear delineation between the global Priceline business. Now, Priceline.com is one of six primary brands of the Priceline Group. Priceline announced in May 2015 that it would invest an additional $250 million in Chinese online travel company Ctrip to tap the fast-growing China market.
