Kegels have been around since Dr Arnold Kegel invented them in 1948, and it's fair to say that we've definitely moved mountains of change in the pelvic floor industry in the last decade or so, but Kegels are still being prescribed as the "go-to" exercise in a lot of cases. You may be aware that there are a few issues associated with the Kegel, particularly if clients have been doing them regularly, but not getting any results. And, you may also know that a lot of clients aren't necessarily performing their Kegels with 100% accuracy if verbal cues alone are used. But, were you aware that there are more than 9 reasons why Kegels are a problem?! Well, in this week's episode of the Pelvicpreneur Podcast, resident pelvic floor expert, Claire Mockridge is here to share ALL of the PROBLEMS she's encountered with clients doing Kegels over the years, so strap yourself in, grab a cup of your favourite non-bladder irritating beverage, and enjoy! When it comes to teaching movement and exercise to clients, there are lots and lots of ways that you can do this as a Fitness Professional. The vegan-friendly way of saying this is “There's more than one way to peel an orange”! Now, depending on how you entered the fitness industry, and/or who trained you, you may have been encouraged to cue exercises to clients following a step-by-step, cue-by-cue approach. Over the years, perhaps you've been influenced by lots of educators out there, and you may have even developed your own strong opinions about HOW movement teachers should be cueing exercise. In this week's episode of the Pelvicpreneur Podcast, allow Claire to take you on a trip down memory lane where she shares: a taster of her own teaching style with you; WHY everyone who teaches movement teaches it differently, and why it's necessary for you to develop your own teaching style (which sets you apart from your competitors). Ever wondered if conditions like prolapse, stress and urge incontinence, pelvic girdle pain, birth trauma and/or abdominal separation could be prevented? It's an interesting question (and a long list of conditions!) to ponder, isn't it? It's true that a lot of the work we do as FitPros is in a rehabilitation setting: we assess, we treat and we get people out of pain, but what if some of the conditions that are so prevalent in the postnatal population nowadays, could actually be addressed when working with our pregnant clients? Would you like to be a part of a new wave of pre-hab versus re-hab expert? If so, tune into this insightful episode of the Pelvicpreneur Podcast, where Claire shares her thoughts on the topic of prevention versus cure. Pop your earbuds in, take a walk and enjoy! When it comes to working with diastasis recti clients, the whole "Should they do sit ups, or should they avoid them altogether?" debate gets swirled around in postnatal exercise circles quite often, doesn't it? It's truly annoying for us as FitPros that the 2 most common exercises that the majority of the human population on the planet know about are: 1) the plank and 2) sit ups, and as postnatal exercise specialists, we have our work cut out for us about educating our clients on safe movements to perform whilst they're in a rehab setting. If you want to know if sit ups should be avoided entirely for postpartum clients, then tune into this week's episode of the Pelvicpreneur Podcast to find out. In this segment, Claire helps arm you with all the information you need to be able to answer the questions "Can I do sit ups?" or "So and so told me to avoid sit ups, is that right?" the next time a postpartum person asks you these. When it comes to seeing 1:1 clients virtually and/or teaching classes online, it can be really draining on your energy, can't it? If you've ever felt the need to decompress or literally lie down in a darkened room after a Zoom call, please know that you're not alone. Teaching anything online (regardless of the subject matter) requires a different skills set to seeing clients in-person. When it comes to teaching exercise online though - well, there's dead air time to fill in between reps, the constant movement you have to do back and forth between demonstrating an exercise and checking your screen to make sure your participants' technique is ok, and we can't NOT mention the constant lag or delay that happens every single time you're trying to have a conversation! In this week's episode of the Pelvicpreneur Podcast, Claire is here to share her experience of protecting her own physical and mental energy when showing up live; what Zoom calls she's tweaked so her clients get the best out of her every single time; and a whole host of useful tips on how you too can do the same. Most FitPros use some form of content marketing to attract clients into their business. And, if you've been doing what you do for a number of years now, you've probably produced and published LOTS of content, right? But, have you ever wondered about whether something you posted on Facebook or Instagram 5 years ago should still be there on public view? Have you ever considered the implications of a prospective client finding a blog post that you wrote over a decade ago that's now full of misinformation because your industry has moved on, new research has been published, and/or you've updated your qualifications since then? In this anecdotal style episode, Claire is here to give you a timeline tour of all of the social media platforms and content marketing strategies she's used since 2005, as well as what content she's removed from public view and why she's done so. After listening in to this episode, you'll learn exactly what the best practices are for you to follow if you have old content still swimming around. It's true that there's life beyond the Shoulder Bridge and the Kegel when it comes to prescribing exercises to clients with pelvic floor dysfunction, but do you know the real reasons why standing exercises are so incredibly beneficial for our pelvic floor patients? Whilst it's a delicious experience to lay our postnatal clients on their backs post-pregnancy, it's not always practical to do this (particularly once you throw a baby/toddler and/or a four-legged friend into the mix!), and if workout space is an issue for you or your client, you need to put your thinking cap on for sure, don't you? In this episode, Claire is highlighting a recent client case study where she relieved a client (22 years post-birth!), of her stress and urge incontinence symptoms by prescribing standing exercises only. Social media content is all about balance. Sure, it's important to educate your followers about safe and effective exercise, and to inform them about how your approach can help them, and how it differs to other approaches etc, but have you ever thought about what impression you're giving prospective clients via your social media content? Do you only post work-related stuff on your business Instagram or Facebook page, for example? Do you ever let clients in and peel back the curtain for a peek of what interests you outside work, or what you do when you're "off the clock"? Are you scared to share anything messy, negative, or a personal story from your life because people will judge or think less of you? Here's the thing: people buy from people, so if all you're sharing on social media is educational, "how-to" content 100% of the time, what impression do prospective clients have of you? Tune into this week's episode to hear some actionable tips on how you can create more of a connection with your audience, gain new followers, and also get more interaction with your content too. It's been a while since we've had a guest on the Pelvicpreneur Podcast and this week, we have not 1 but 5 experts here, to share their stories about how finding the full-body approach has helped them personally, their clients, AND their business. Gone are the days when a client comes to us with shoulder pain and we "spot-reduce" their problem by only focussing on the shoulder site itself - the same rule applies to pelvic floor health. We need to look further up the chain for what's causing that downwards pressure onto the pelvic floor, and assess what's hanging below the pelvis too, to help improve gait cycle, foot mechanics and glute strength. Not every expert featured in this episode specialises in pelvic floor rehab, so tune in to hear each of them explain how they came to discover how everything in the body is connected, and what types of clients they're been able to treat, as a result. Things have been busy behind-the-scenes at the Pelvicpreneur Podcast the last few months, and this week, Claire is ready to announce her NEW program to the world! Are you excited to hear more?! Background: Claire first had the idea for this course for fitness professionals, way back in July 2021 and she's been adding concepts and content to it whilst out on walks, "talk-to-text" style, via the Notes app on her phone. Once she'd mapped out 18 modules and had racked up 8,713 words, she then realised she kind knew what she was talking about here! This NEW course isn't anything to do with feet, pelvic floor, abdominal separation, pregnancy or postnatal exercise. It isn't related to marketing or social media either, but it IS a little bit business-related. Why choose the podcast for this announcement? Well, if you like stories, there's plenty of them in this new course, and in fact stories make up pretty much the entire premise of this new offering, and this is why Claire's chosen audio-only format for the content's delivery AND her podcast to make this announcement. Intrigued? Well, pop your earbuds in, and press play on this week's episode. Enjoy! Approaching pelvic floor dysfunction from the foot up is a really sensible strategy. Many clients with incontinence, prolapse and pudendal neuralgia really benefit from increasing the mobility in their forefoot because it helps improve their gait, which in turn assists in improving their pelvic floor function too. If you know you should focus more on forefoot mobility, but you're stuck for exercise ideas, or you're unsure which pieces of equipment to use with clients (because some of them seem to be just gimmicks to make us go out and buy shiny new things!), then you're going to love this week's episode. Claire is here to share her top 3 "foot tools" that she uses regularly with clients; why the best way to improve forefoot mobility actually requires no equipment at all (!); and some super useful tips on modifying the use of foot tools from someone who's been there and done it. Cue the confetti and open the champagne because this month, Claire is celebrating 7 years of freedom from teaching those traditional pelvic floor exercises called "Kegels"! Invented in the 1940's, Kegels are known as the "go-to" exercise in more industries than you think (not just pelvic floor health), and you might appreciate that it's somewhat hard to go it alone in this sea of Kegels, but Pelvic Floor Expert Claire has managed to do it successfully now for more than half a decade. Join Claire in this honest and candid episode where she highlights 1) why she stopped teaching Kegels and what exercises she prescribes instead, 2) whether she ever regrets making the decision to takes Kegels out of her repertoire, 3) what research exists for and against Kegels (and why it's somewhat contradictory), 4) whether it's appropriate to teach Kegels AND the full-body approach at the same time, 5) what benefits her clients have gained from her non-traditional approach, and 6) finally a truly honest account of some of her experiences of (unsuccessfully) teaching the Kegel in a group exercise setting. Do you want to know if it's possible to help treat clients with pelvic floor dysfunction without prescribing Kegels? Well, tune in to this week's episode to find out!
