In this week's episode of The Power Lounge, host Amy Vaughan welcomes Ilise Benun, acclaimed business coach, author, and founder of Marketing-Mentor.com, for a candid conversation about money, mindset, and marketing for creative professionals. Together they explore why so many talented freelancers and solopreneurs fall into the exhausting cycle of undercharging and overdelivering, and what it truly takes to build a business that reflects both your skill and your value.Ilise shares decades of wisdom on how to reframe pricing from a matter of self-worth to one of clear strategy and confident communication. She offers practical advice on having better money conversations, identifying ideal clients, and setting prices that feel fair to both sides. The discussion is packed with insight, from her signature “$500, $5,000, or $50,000” approach to budget talks, to the mindset shifts needed to escape desperation pricing and cultivate lasting client relationships.Amy and Ilise also dig into the art of consistent marketing, emphasizing that real success comes from showing up regularly and authentically. They discuss the power of simplicity, how to market yourself without making it about you, and why even small, steady efforts can transform your business over time. Whether you're a creative struggling to charge what you're worth or a seasoned professional ready to attract higher-value clients, this episode will challenge how you think about money and remind you that confidence, clarity, and communication are your strongest assets.Chapters:00:00 – Introduction & Welcome00:29 – Meet Ilise Benun: Guest Introduction01:22 – Ilise's Background & Podcast01:49 – Episode Overview: Pricing, Mindset, and Marketing02:28 – The “Spooky” Topic: Money03:53 – Why Creative Professionals Undervalue Their Work05:21 – The Power of Mindset in Pricing06:02 – Pricing Problems Need Marketing Solutions07:24 – Attracting the Right Clients & Using AI10:10 – Real-World Pricing Stories11:08 – The Importance of the Money Conversation12:31 – Mindset Shifts for Discussing Budgets13:44 – Avoiding Desperation Pricing15:10 – Transparency and Building Client Partnerships16:16 – Value-Based vs. Hourly Pricing17:32 – Common Marketing Mistakes19:58 – The Simplicity of Effective Marketing21:30 – Raising Rates & Upgrading Clients24:28 – Marketing Yourself vs. Marketing a Product27:30 – Power Round & Final AdviceQuotes:“There's this people-pleasing thing we tend to do, especially as women, and it gets all tied up in our so-called self-worth — which doesn't really belong in business. Coaches tell me all the time, “I know my why.” That's great. But do your values actually show up in the way you market and sell? In today's episode of The Raving Coaches podcast, I walk you through how values become your north star — not just for motivation, but for pricing, offers, branding, visuals, and your entire sales experience. I talk about Brené Brown's example of courage and vulnerability, and then connect it back to us as coaches: if your value is kindness, you can't be out here doing high-pressure, shame-based sales. That's off-brand. We'll look at what kindness looks like in copy, what it looks like in design (yes, even fonts can be “pokey”), and the difference between telling the truth and tearing down other coaches to sell. Then I invite you to the November 13 Marketing Lab — a 90-minute, interactive, “fix it right now” session where we'll identify your real business values and make sure clients can actually see them in your marketing. If your values are missing, you will not attract the right-fit clients. Period. https://ravingcoaches.com/marketing-lab

Most new coaches start by throwing everything into social media—posting, tweaking, chasing the algorithm—hoping it leads to clients. But here's the truth: social media is fleeting. A post lives for a few hours (maybe days). A podcast episode can work for you for years. In this episode of The Coaching Edge, I'm sharing why I believe podcasting is the single most powerful top-of-funnel tool for coaches, and how it has worked for me in both my personal coaching practice (Bite-Sized Balance) and my business coaching work (The Coaching Edge). I'll walk you through five hidden benefits of podcasting most coaches don't think about, from the fact that you own your podcast (no algorithm stress), to the way long-form audio builds real trust, to the evergreen power of episodes that continue to convert years later. (I still sign new 1:1 clients from Bite-Sized Balance—a podcast I wrapped up over two years ago.) You'll also get an inside look at my funnel model and how my podcast fits into it. Each episode flows naturally into my freebies, my low-ticket workshops, and then into my Business Building Bootcamp Open Houses. From there, the right-fit clients join BBB or my more premium offers. It's a simple, low-pressure funnel that works because the podcast does the heavy lifting of building trust. And I'll tackle the three biggest pushbacks I hear from coaches about podcasting: “Isn't it too expensive?” (Nope—editing and hosting can be surprisingly affordable), “Doesn't it take too much time?” (Not if you keep it simple with short episodes, and/or bi-monthly publishing, and tools like ChatGPT), and “But I don't know anyone to interview” (You don't need guests—your expertise and coaching tools are more than enough). Here's the truth: podcasting isn't as hard, expensive, or time-consuming as it looks from the outside. And the ROI is dramatically better than what you'll get by pouring your energy into social media posts that disappear overnight. If you've been on the fence about starting a podcast—or if you're wondering how to use one strategically to grow your business—this episode will give you both the inspiration and the practical steps to get started.
