Send us a textFaith Through the Roof – Finding Jesus Beyond the Crowdthe BibleHave you ever felt lost in a crowd—even a religious one? In this episode, we dive deep into Mark 2, where a group of faithful friends break through a roof to bring a paralyzed man to Jesus. Their determination challenges us to reflect on whether we're truly pursuing Christ—or just moving with the crowd. As we unpack this powerful moment in Scripture, we explore how the crowd around Jesus symbolized more than physical obstruction. While some genuinely sought Him, others—like the religious leaders—stood in judgment. It's a reminder that proximity to religion doesn't equal intimacy with God.This conversation confronts a hard truth: even within church walls, it's possible to miss the presence of Jesus. Sometimes, traditions, opinions, or even well-meaning structures can become barriers. The paralyzed man's friends chose faith over form, showing us the kind of community that doesn't give up when life gets hard.In today's hyperconnected world, where relationships are often shallow and curated, the message of this story calls for authentic community—the kind that carries us when we can't carry ourselves. Are the people around you drawing you closer to Jesus, or just keeping you occupied? We also explore what it means to step back from institutional religion (without abandoning community) in order to reconnect directly with Christ through Scripture, prayer, and personal devotion. Communion becomes a reminder that our access to Jesus is not filtered through crowds, titles, or rituals—it's personal, present, and powerful. This episode is for anyone who feels stuck, sidelined, or spiritually numb. Let the faith of four friends inspire you to break through the noise and find Jesus in a deeper, more direct way.
Send us a textFaith That Breaks the Roof – Escaping the Crowd to Reach JesusThe most dangerous path in your faith journey might be the one that looks safest—following the crowd. In this bold and eye-opening message, Pastor Ben Cooper takes us to Mark 2:1–12, where a paralyzed man's friends literally broke through a roof to reach Jesus because the crowd was blocking the way. This episode challenges believers around the world to examine what's truly directing their spiritual walk. Are you moving toward Christ—or just being swept along by religious momentum, social media trends, or cultural pressures? As Pastor Ben reminds us, just because a church is full doesn't mean hearts are tuned to God. Some gather only to critique or conform. This teaching addresses a deep truth: the crowd can become a barrier, even in spiritual settings. Sometimes, finding Jesus means pushing past the noise—even temporarily stepping back from routine church environments—to pursue personal engagement with the Word of God.The message also explores the importance of authentic community. When life leaves you paralyzed—by fear, failure, or pain—who's carrying your mat? Do you have people of faith around you willing to lift you up, or are you surrounded by surface-level “likes” and silence? True community isn't about visibility—it's about loyalty, sacrifice, and spiritual depth.Whether you're feeling lost in a sea of religion, discouraged by performance-based faith, or unsure how to get closer to Jesus, this message will reignite your personal pursuit of Christ. It's time to stop blending in and start breaking through. Why following the crowd can block you from encountering JesusHow Mark 2 reveals the difference between religion and relationshipWhat it means to “break the roof” in your spiritual lifeHow to discern authentic friends from passive followersWhy personal faith must be rooted in Scripture, not social approvalMark 2:1–12 – The healing of the paralyzed man through radical faithRomans 12:2 – “Do not conform to the pattern of this world…”John 5:39–40 – “You study the Scriptures... yet you refuse to come to Me…”Stream this episode globally on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, iHeart Radio, Buzzsprout, and all major platforms. Genesis 9:6, "From the hand of every man's brother I will require the life of man. Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man." God is the one who instituted capital punishment. However, there are some qualifiers, and there are some exceptions. The original reason God demanded the death penalty for certain sins was not only because they were heinous crimes, but because death is a severe deterrent to prevent others from committing them again. If sin is addressed and punished early on, the rest of society will not embrace it. Join Bill and Annette for a biblical discussion on capitol punishment. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar are diving into the nuanced topic of slavery in the Bible. Atheists like to point fingers at this and claim that the Bible supports slavery. While contemporary perceptions of slavery evoke images of the brutal Atlantic slave trade, the biblical context offers a different understanding. In biblical times, slavery predominantly referred to a form of indentured servitude where individuals voluntarily entered service as a means of survival or economic gain. Unlike the race-based slavery prevalent in history, biblical bondservants had certain rights and protections under Mosaic law. Moreover, the Bible unequivocally condemns the dehumanization and mistreatment of others, emphasizing principles of love for one's neighbor and equitable treatment of all individuals. The guys reinforce the inherent value and dignity of every human being, created in the image of God.Critics often point to instances in the Bible where slavery is mentioned, such as taking prisoners of war as slaves, as evidence of its endorsement. However, these objections overlook the historical and cultural context in which these practices occurred. The Bible does not necessarily endorse all practices it records but presents them within the broader framework of the times. Importantly, figures like Hagar, a slave girl, play significant roles in shaping God's redemptive plan, emphasizing the inclusivity and universality of God's love and grace.Christianity has historically been a driving force behind social reform and the abolition of slavery. Harriet Tubman, who risked her life to rescue hundreds of slaves through the Underground Railroad, gained the nickname of Moses. In the exodus of Israel from Egypt, Moses was the great emancipator. The absence of a specific commandment against slavery in the Ten Commandments does not imply its endorsement. Instead, the principles of justice, compassion, and human dignity woven throughout the biblical narrative provide a moral framework that condemns oppression and upholds the inherent worth of every individual. In summary, the Bible's portrayal of slavery requires nuanced understanding within its historical context, emphasizing principles of justice, compassion, and human dignity. Christianity, far from endorsing slavery, has historically laid the moral framework that atheists and others borrow from when trying to find flaws in scripture. Christians should use their example as encouragement to deeply study God's word. The guys encourage everyone to walk as bondservants to Christ, willingly submitting to Him and His word. When Justin and Stefanie Boyce faced the unfathomable loss of their children, Jayden and Brooklyn, to a rare genetic disorder, the fabric of their lives was irrevocably torn. Yet, out of the depths of their sorrow, they emerged with a story that is as inspiring as it is heart-wrenching. This episode is a tribute to the strength it takes to not only carry on but to transform grief into a force for healing, as the Boyces have done through their work at the Oak Center Retreat in Southern California. As we sit down with Justin and Stefanie, they open up about the overwhelming support they received from their community during the darkest times. Their narrative extends a delicate invitation to contemplate the unexpected kindness of friends, family, and even strangers, and how these acts of compassion can illuminate the path through adversity. Their experience with community kindness underscores a central truth: no one should have to navigate the treacherous waters of grief alone, and it is the connections we forge that often buoy us through the storm. The conversation naturally flows into the heart of resilience, exploring how shared suffering can lead to profound bonds and a shared sense of purpose. Justin and Stefanie's candid reflections on their growth in the aftermath of tragedy, coupled with their commitment to helping others find solace, serve as a beacon for anyone grappling with their own losses. Their story, punctuated by their move to California and the founding of The Oaks Retreats, serves as an intimate guide through the complexities of mourning, faith, and ultimately, finding a way forward in a world that has been forever changed.Alabaster Beautiful individual Books of the Bible Support the showCheck out our website for more ways to fully connect to God's Word. Have you ever paused to consider how your career and faith intertwine? In our latest episode, we sit down with Chelsea Patterson Sobolik, a distinguished author and policy expert, who shares her inspiring journey from international ambitions to significant policy work in the heart of Washington DC, all through the lens of a biblical worldview. Chelsea's candid discussion about her adoption story and her advocacy for refugees and immigration broadens our perspective on the unique challenges and victories women face in balancing their profession and personal lives. This conversation takes a deeper look at the sacred act of labor, transforming our understanding of work into an expression of divine worship. Reflecting on Martin Luther's teachings, we realize that even the most mundane tasks carry a profound purpose - serving others and acting as vessels for God's love. The reassurance from Scripture that our labor, whether praised or unsung, is seen and valued by God, offers comfort and compels us to seek His presence in our daily grind. It's a heartfelt reminder that our work can be a beautiful expression of our faith. To wrap things up, we contemplate the forgotten art of Sabbath rest and the essential nature of finding balance. The episode draws attention to the modern obsession with being perpetually busy and how resting is not only rejuvenating but also a humbling acknowledgment of our human limits and God's overarching control. I also share some of my treasured Bible study practices, hoping to encourage you to weave spiritual growth into the fabric of your day-to-day life. For those seeking a deeper exploration of these themes, Chelsea Patterson's book, "Called to Cultivate," comes highly recommended as a guide to discovering the joy and fulfillment found in the intersection of work and faith.Book: Called to CultivateWebsite: chelseapattersonsobolik.comGo-To Bible: ESV Study BibleJournalFavorite App/Website: DwellAlabaster Beautiful individual Books of the Bible Support the showCheck out our website for more ways to fully connect to God's Word. Preston Sprinkle doesn't shy away from the tension of wrestling with what the Bible says about marriage and sexuality. As the world's conversation around same-sex relationships and marriage gets louder, it's my desire as a christian to know how to listen and engage in a humble, Christ-like way. Today's guest loves the Word of God and the people of God and engages in this topic with such love, compassion, depth, and thoughtfulness. I'm so incredibly grateful to have Preston Sprinkle on The Happy Hour for the very first time!Dr. Preston Sprinkle is a biblical scholar, speaker, podcaster, a New York Times bestselling author, and is the co-founder and president of The Center for Faith, Sexuality & Gender. Preston loves talking and writing about hot-button cultural and theological issues with thoughtfulness, honesty and grace. He is passionate about approaching topics that everyone wants to know about, but few are willing to talk honestly and graciously about. Topics like sexuality, gender, race, violence, patriotism, hell, politics, war, and what it means to follow a Jewish prophet-king who was executed for treason. He works hard to challenge himself and others to read the Bible with conviction and humility, while holding their predetermined beliefs loosely.Maybe you think this topic doesn't affect you, or you're feeling apprehensive after listening to our conversation. My prayer is that we can think more deeply, love more widely, and learn to listen and engage in conversations in Christ-honoring ways.SHOW LINKS:Center of FaithPeople to be LovedDoes the Bible Support Same-Sex Marriage?Launch PodcastTheology in the RawChristian SexualityCONNECT WITH JAMIEHAPPY HOUR BOOK CLUB
The Bible does not support slavery. The Bible subverts slavery. 4 things to remember when reading the Bible. -The bible is a library, not a book. -The bible is written for us, but not to us. -Never read an isolated bible verse -The entire bible points to Jesus.

Does the Bible support the death penalty, or is capital punishment a barbaric relic of the past that should be abolished? Listen now to Dr. David K. Bernard's response. If you enjoy this podcast, leave a five-star rating and a review on iTunes or your preferred podcast platform. Show notes: Dr. Preston Sprinkle covers his reasons for writing Does the Bible Support Same-Sex Marriage, how to have a loving, respectful conversation about tough issues, and how he became an author and speaker in this field (2:42). He talks about the need for graciousness, humility, and genuine curiosity, how Gen Xers and Boomers can easily fail at this (12:40). Dr. Sprinkle defends his using secular psychology and why he uses the term “historical Christian view” (24:19). They turn to discuss singleness, and why life without sex or marriage is still fulfilling in the Christian worldview (34:59). Does the Bible Support Same Sex Marriage, part 2, continues our discussion from the last episode. In this episode, I address the top 5 arguements (that my Patreon suppporters voted on) agianst the traditional view of marriage, which include: 1) Is this simply a secondary "agree to disagree" issue? 2) does the ethical trajectory regarding women and slavery suggest that same-sex sexual relationships are on the same trajectory toward acceptance? 3) did consenual same sex sexual relationships even exist in biblical times? 4) Love is love; why can't gay people experience love? 5) isn't the traditional view of marriage harmful toward LGB poeple? You came for the Real not the fake. You came for the Kingdom, not the symbols of It. While you are truly blessed by worldly success, you're more blessed and excited because you know (you are) the Source of it.That's what keeps this Light on, here-- the Source of the miracles, the Source of the stuff, not the stuff. That's what gets me up every morning. That's what inspires me to share each day. I'm grateful for the words that come, but the Silence they come from... I give all the praise, all the glory. What will that Silence become in your life? Listen... and see :) Watch what happens.I Love you,Niknikki@curlynikki.com
Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 2:12, “But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.” This verse is cited frequently by opponents of women in ministry. However, the United Pentecostal Church International ordains women to preach, teach, and serve in leadership roles. How does the UPCI reconcile this practice with Paul's statement? Dr. David K. Bernard answers this question by noting examples of women in spiritual leadership in the Old Testament, the early church, and the modern Pentecostal movement. In doing so, he makes the case for women playing an active role in ministry today, including preaching and teaching God's Word.If you enjoy this podcast, leave a rating and a review on iTunes or your preferred podcast platform.
