Jeffrey M. Bradshaw discusses two new commentaries on the life and ministry of Abraham, Sarah, and their families. The first of these books is part of his commentary series on Genesis, In God's Image and Likeness, written with co-authors (and Conversations with Interpreter guests) Matthew Bowen and John Thompson. The second book is a shorter version called Look unto Abraham and Sarah. In this episode, Dr. Bradshaw explores the advantage of a commentary format for Latter-day Saints, pointing ways in which this format can help us become richer readers of the scriptures. He also discusses how the Abrahamic Covenant impacts women and men in our desires to become more like God and to follow the covenant example of not only Patriarchs like Abraham, but also Matriarchs like Sarah and Hagar. How do you keep walking when the promises of God seem impossible? Summary: In this episode, we dive into the heart of the Old Testament: The Abrahamic Covenant. We look at Genesis 12–17 and Abraham 1–2 to see how a "foreigner and a stranger" became the Father of the Faithful. The Search for Greater Happiness: We analyze Abraham's desire for the "blessings of the fathers" and why he sought for his own "place of residence" spiritually and physically. The story of Abraham and Sarah, spanning Genesis 11–25 and illuminated in Hebrews 11:8–19, exemplifies a living faith that justifies and transforms. Called by God to leave their homeland for an unknown land of promise, they obeyed in faith, sojourning as strangers and pilgrims in tents while looking forward not merely to earthly inheritance but to a heavenly city designed and built by God. Despite Sarah's barrenness and their advanced age—Abraham "as good as dead" at 100 and Sarah past childbearing—they trusted God's seemingly impossible promises: a son through whom descendants would multiply like stars and sand. Sarah, by considering God faithful, received strength to conceive Isaac, turning her initial laughter of doubt into joy. Their faith endured trials, including impatience leading to Ishmael's birth, repeated deceptions for safety, long waiting, and ultimately Abraham's willingness to offer Isaac in obedience, reasoning that God could raise the dead—a foreshadowing of resurrection hope and the ultimate sacrifice of God's Son, Jesus. Though they died without fully receiving the promises in this life, they greeted them from afar as exiles seeking a better, heavenly country, proving that true saving faith—alone justifying us before God—inevitably produces obedient, persevering works to His glory.

Abraham and Sarah's story reminds us that God's promises stand firm—even when our faith feels weak. They were called to leave everything familiar, to believe in the impossible, and to wait decades for a promise that seemed out of reach. Along the way, they doubted, tried to control the outcome, and made mistakes—but God remained faithful
God promised to make Abraham a great nation. But both Abraham and Sarah were very old and had no children. God promised they would have a baby in spite of advanced age. This session will guide kids to understand God's promise. God is faithful and dependable. There is no promise that God cannot keep.

Genesis 16 recounts the story of Hagar, Sarah, and Abraham, uncovering profound truths about suffering and God's care for us. Through Hagar's experience, we learn that even in our darkest moments, God sees and hears us. The phrase 'El Roi' - the God who sees me - becomes a beacon of hope, showing that no matter our circumstances, the Creator of the universe cares deeply for each of us. This message challenges us to trust in God's larger plan, even when we can't understand our current suffering.
