At the ERLC, our goal is to serve our Southern Baptist churches in the public square. As you have heard throughout this series about our work in Washington D.C., having a presence and a voice in our nation's capital allows us to speak up, for, and from our Southern Baptist churches before various audiences. In previous episodes, we have broken down how that work covers all three branches of government and some of the specific ways we seek to engage those arenas. Today, our focus turns to the work of the ERLC's Research team and how they support and undergird the work of the ERLC Policy team. Joining us is Rashan Frost. RaShan serves as the ERLC director of research and senior fellow focused on issues of human dignity. He is the teaching pastor of Centerpoint Church in North Charleston, South Carolina, and is an adjunct professor of Christian Studies at Charleston Southern University. Frost earned his doctor of philosophy in theology with a concentration in public theology at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is active in denominational leadership, serving with the Charleston Baptist Association of the South Carolina Baptist Convention.
In today's conversation, the last in our Women in Theology series, we catch up with Regent's own Library Director and Professor of the History of Christianity, Dr. Cindy Aalders. Cindy has recently published her thesis as a monograph, The Spiritual Lives and Manuscript Cultures of Eighteenth-Century Women (2024). In this conversation, we delve into the archives and lives of Methodist, Baptist and Anglican women in the eighteenth century, seeking to understand their friendship, kinship and spiritual development as demonstrated in their letter-writing and diary entries. Cindy's work highlights the significant impact of women in relational spheres and religious communities. These women invested deeply in intergenerational friendships and spiritual kinship as they sought to be faithful to God. Cindy reminds us that we can learn much from them today as we strive to support one another in an increasingly isolated world. Cindy also shares her upcoming summer class, Children and Spiritual Identity (June 30–July 4).BioDr. Cindy Aalders is the Director of the John Richard Allison Library and Associate Professor of the History of Christianity at Regent College. Why do universities require students to take classes in the humanities during their first few years? Dr. David Horner, who has taught these classes for many years, helps us see the wisdom of requiring these courses, in light of the value they bring to the student who takes them seriously. Dave earned his master's and doctoral degrees in philosophy at Oxford University, is a professor of philosophy at Talbot School of Theology, and is the author of (among other books) the popular Mind Your Faith: A Student's Guide to Thinking and Living Well. In this podcast we discuss: How Dave got interested in studying the humanities How apologetics (defenses of the faith) helped him overcome a crisis of faith in college What the “humanities” are and how they relate to humans, being “humane,” and being a “humanist” Understanding a “College of Liberal Arts,” what a “liberal education” is, and how this relates to the humanities The structure of classical education, on which the “core curriculum” was historically based, and on which contemporary classical Christian education is based The interesting “border-line” cases of law and psychology How the “arts” and the “sciences” differ (it's not what most people think) Why students should be required to take core courses in the humanities The importance, in all fields, of learning to make good distinctions How to discern whether or not a specific humanities course is worth taking The connections between the humanities and wisdom An argument against the humanities--“They are so “impractical!” The critical distinction between “ends” and “means” in evaluating the value of the humanities The valuable role of the humanities in providing us with “cultural literacy” Why Christians should study non-Christians in literature, philosophy, and the other humanities Other practical benefits of studying the humanities, according to the CEO of a major corporation How to get the most out of your core curriculum courses The role a healthy campus ministry can play in your studies Why you shouldn't just learn about the humanities, but rather learn to engage in the humanities Resources mentioned during our conversation: David Horner, Mind Your Faith: A Student's Guide to Thinking and Living Well Stan Wallace, Have We Lost Our Minds? Greetings everyone! In this podcast, Christian and I had the opportunity to interview a mentor that is dear to our hearts, Steve Edwards. He serves as the women's basketball head coach and the campus pastor at Brewton Parker College in Mt. Vernon, GA. BPC is where Christian and I both got our B.A. degrees in Christian Studies. During our years at BPC, coach Edwards was one of our closest mentors. He has been in ministry for many years, and has a lot of God stories to share, along with advice for ministers. Throughout this podcast, Steve shares his story and discusses his life as a minister. Throughout the conversation, we spent a lot of time just discussing ministry from all of our perspectives and sharing some important advice from experience and scripture about "Ministry Lifers" as Steve called it! It was a great discussion and we are excited to share it with all of you! We are so excited to have Dr. David Koyzis, author of Political Visions and Illusions, with us on the podcast today! This is an encore presentation of one of our favorite conversations! We did a book report on the Political Visions book in the past several episodes and invited Dr. Koyzis to bring the conclusion to the book. I think you will enjoy his perspective on how the ideologies in the book mimic the true gospel. He gives good advice to the church about how to think about our relationship with political entities. Dr. David Koyzis is an experienced theologian who taught for 30 years at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ontario, and is currently a Global Scholar with Global Scholars Canada. He has attained a Ph.D. in Government and International Studies at the University of Notre Dame, a Master's in Political Theory at Toronto's Institute for Christian Studies, and a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. In recent decades, classical education has experienced significant growth both in the U.S. and globally. This educational approach takes various forms, including traditional five-day programs, hybrid/collaborative models, and homeschooling. Alongside these formats, a flurry of terms like “classical Christian,” “Christian classical,” “classical liberal arts,” and “humanities education” have emerged. Understanding and distinguishing among these options can be complex for schools and parents alike. Today, Dr. Chris Schlect, Director of the Classical and Christian Studies at New Saint Andrews College, joins us to help clarify these terms and explore their significance in shaping the next generation through our homes and schools. Peace Talks continues exploring the role of art in faith and life with this tender and encouraging interview with Leslie Roberts and Bryanna Russell from Sanctuary Mental Health MInistries (an organization that equips the Church to support mental health and wellbeing).Leslie and Bryanna share with Vanessa why they've chosen to use art as a medium to give permission, belonging, and support to those struggling with mental health challenges. They also describe the formation, justice, and peace deeply embedded in the landmark project Sanctuary Songs. Leslie Roberts is the Communications Director at Sanctuary Mental Health Ministries. She holds a Master of Arts in Christian Studies from Regent College and lives in Vancouver, BC. Prior to Sanctuary, she worked in advertising, film production and post-production, and ministry at a church in Texas, as well as running her own photography business. In her time working at the church, she recognized that one of the biggest needs in the Church is for education, awareness, and care for people living with mental health challenges. Bryana Russell has worked as a consultant, speaker, published writer, producer, and connector in the non-profit sector, including Church ministries, for the past two decades. She has developed curriculums, established youth programs, and grown an international medical institute. Prior to her work with Sanctuary Mental Health Ministries as Director of Engagement, she worked as gallery curator, bridging conversations of art and faith. Her undergraduate work focused on International Studies and Psychology, and she holds a Masters of Theological Studies, with a concentration on art and female embodied. Her most important work, however, is raising four boys, aged 15, 13, 10, and (surprise) 1, alongside her beloved husband, Chris. » Subscribe to PEACE TALKS Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/peace-talks/id1590168616About the Center for Formation, Justice and Peace:Justice and peace come from the inside out—from the overflow of a transformed heart. And so joining us today is Professor Nancy Pearcey. Heralded as "America's pre-eminent evangelical Protestant female intellectual" in The Economist, Pearcey earned a Master's degree from Covenant Theological Seminary and pursued further graduate work in the History of Philosophy at the Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto. Currently, she is a professor and scholar in residence at Houston Baptist University. Today, she'll share with us how men benefit from being fathers, how Darwin forged the secularization of the postmodern masculine script, how masculinity became "toxic," and why boys fail to launch. Back in the spring, we talked with Dr. Jeffrey Dudiak, ICS alum and Professor of Philosophy at The King's University in Edmonton, while he was enjoying a sabbatical. We walked, chapter by chapter, through some of the guiding questions of his short book Post-Truth? Facts and Faithfulness (Currents in Reformational Thought Series, Wipf and Stock, 2022) and got a bit of a glimpse into his forthcoming sabbatical project: an interactive forum on wisdom and polarization called Of Serpents and Doves: Explorations in Christian Wisdom. In this episode, Jeff explores a more enriched understanding of truth, compares worldviews vs. ideologies, considers the role of relevance in one's approach to teaching, and exhorts us to learn how to “do wisdom Christianly.” Have a listen! *** Critical Faith is sponsored by the Centre for Philosophy, Religion, and Social Ethics (CPRSE) at the Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto.
