“It's about doing something that's relevant to that brand that makes people, you know, have intrigue and then go either search for it or find out more information.” -- Aaron Matthews   This episode's the second half of my interview with audio branding expert and creative director Aaron Matthews as we talk about how Creative Fix goes about crafting the perfect brand sound, the secret to hosting a successful branded podcast, and the surprisingly retro future of audio branding. As always, if you have any questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes.  If you have questions for me, just visit http://www.audiobrandingpodcast.com/ (www.audiobrandingpodcast.com) where you'll find all sorts of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter (on the http://www.audiobrandingpodcast.com/ (www.audiobrandingpodcast.com) webpage) will let you know when the new podcasts are available. Open to Everybody We begin the second half of our interview with a look at Creative Fix's process for working with clients and guiding them through the creative process, at the role audio mood boards play in the brainstorming process, and how long it might take for all the different elements to come together. The conversation turns to audio branding, and its untapped potential, particularly on a local level “I think brands are at the start of waking up to it. Very few brands do it well, to be honest, but I think it's open to everybody.”   Bringing Jingles Back The topic shifts to both the past and future of audio branding, and to how jingles, the hallmark of audio branding in the '80s and '90s, might make a comeback in the digital age. "I think there's an opportunity," Aaron says, "and I think we can do it in a 2022 way." As he jokes, "I think it's time to bring back the jingle. I'm going to start a campaign." Aaron explains that the key to audio marketing is to do the unexpected: “Let's do less copy in those ads and more sound design, let's do the jingles and the sonic identities and the stuff no one else is doing because that's how you stand out.”   The Tip of the Iceberg As the episode comes to a close, we talk more about branded podcasts and the role they play in company branding and the tricky balance of creating brand recognition without selling a product. "There's a lot of opportunities," Aaron says, "and I think there are a lot more branded podcasts coming, and I think we're just at the very, very tip of the iceberg." We wrap things up with a look at social audio apps like Twitter Spaces and Clubhouse, and the role they might play in the future of audio branding and marketing on social media. As he puts it, "it's the idea that it's meant to be for everyone, and that everyone can jump in and have that conversation and that's the important thing about it."   Episode Summary The process of creating an audio brand from start to finish The rise and fall of jingles and how they could make a comeback Branded podcasts and how to successfully market without selling How social audio is opening the media landscape to everyone Connect with the Guest Creative Fix Audio: https://creativefixaudio.com/ (https://creativefixaudio.com/) Connect with Aaron Matthews on LinkedIn:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09BGN8Z4S/ ( https://www.linkedin.com/company/creative-fix-audio/) Connect with the Audio Branding Podcast: Book your project with https://voiceoversandvocals.com/ (Voice Overs and Vocals) https://voiceoversandvocals.com/ (https://voiceoversandvocals.com) Tweet with me on https://twitter.com/JodiKrangle (Twitter) - https://twitter.com/JodiKrangle (https://twitter.com/JodiKrangle) Watch the Audio Branding Podcast on https://www.youtube.com/c/JodiKrangleVO (YouTube) - https://www.youtube.com/c/JodiKrangleVO (https://www.youtube.com/c/JodiKrangleVO) Connect with me on https://www.linkedin.com/in/jodikrangle/ (LinkedIn) - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jodikrangle/...

“Production companies make these amazing videos and then go ‘oh, we need to think about some music and stuff,' and it sort of like becomes a bit of a rush. But actually, when you think about it at the same time as pre-production and you start planning out how the sound's going to work with the visuals, it elevates the video so much. And you'll know this if you've ever watched some of the latest prints, like the new James Bond trailer, and if you listen to the actual sound design on that and what's included over the top, it just takes to another level.” -- Aaron Matthews   This week's guest is an audio branding expert who's worked for some of the biggest media brands in the UK, including BBC Radio 1, Global Radio, and Bauer. He's fine-tuned his understanding of how consumers interact with brands at a content level, and the company that he founded, Creative Fix, develops unique audio advertising content that's relevant, distinct, and memorable. His name is Aaron Matthews, and he has a lot to share with us in this interview about the current state of the advertising industry, especially when it comes to effective audio branding. Altering Your Emotions Regular listeners know that we usually start the interview off with a look back at my guest's earliest memories of sound, and Aaron shares the '80s music that his parents listened to with him as a child, from INXS to George Michael, and how, as a teenager, a CD of Gustav Holst's The Planets opened his eyes to the power of music. “What an amazing sound,” he describes it, “and you know how emotional that music is and how it moves you, and I remember hearing this as a teenager and thinking ‘wow, I've never heard anything like that before and it's amazing.'” He tells us how he went on to become a DJ, and how that experience taught him the profound connection between music and its listener. “At the simplest form,” he explains, “you're altering someone's emotions through music.”   Doing Things Digitally We talk about the differences between traditional radio advertising and digital audio, and how digital audio's more personal podcasts have created a new kind of audio market. “Radio,” Aaron tells us, “from its conception, is a shared listening experience... and advertising hasn't really changed in radio because of that." He explains that over eighty percent of digital audio is heard through headphones, and how new audio technology like 3D audio opens up unique branding possibilities. “That presents lots of really interesting opportunities for us,” he says, “in what we can do with sound generally, and we can actually do things with sound that we never could in radio because you'd miss them.”   Transporting the Listener “There's so much more we can do with sound than we can do in radio,” Aaron continues as we talk about digital audio marketing. “You can put people in different places using really great soundscapes.” He tells us how silence is an underused but particularly effective tool in digital audio, and how binaural audio effects have helped transform such diverse soundscapes as ambient horror movie tracks to a recent New Zealand tourism campaign. “Before you even speak one word of copy or the voiceover even starts speaking,” he says, “you've transported someone through their imagination.”   The Sound of Consistency As the first half of our interview concludes, we talk about how corporations use a combination of consistent branding and versatile audio to create an effective sonic brand....

Tim is a literary giant in the US, who has written many books about the Vietnam war, including The Things They Carried as the most famous one. The documentary follows him writing his final book, that he wanted to leave as a memoir and legacy for his sons. I loved this gripping documentary, and it's just impressive how Aaron followed Tim's life for 5 years, still filming even when Tim became seriously ill. We talk about the making of the film and about Tim's views on war in general. He's a fascinating man who manages to make me laugh even when discussing difficult topics. He's made me re-evaluate the way I view the wars we wage and I feel like I'll be mulling this discussion over for a good while yet... “ We pride ourselves in our sophistication, our cosmopolitan, and our awareness of moral issues. In Aaron Matthews’ clear-eyed look into the life and times of a writer that has been called “the best American writer of his generation,” and our "poet laureate of war” Tim O’Brien. A Vietnam veteran, and National Book Award-winner, O’Brien is one of the great voices in modern American literature. The Library of Congress recently named his groundbreaking novel about the Vietnam War, “The Things They Carried,” one of the 65 most influential books in American history. It’s practically a cliché in the military – the book everyone carries is “The Things They Carried.” But O’Brien hasn’t put pen to paper in nearly two decades. He swore off making sentences when, at a late age, he had his first of two children. Plus, the nation was waging new wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that he couldn’t wrap his head around – wars that both reconfirmed and upended the notions of war, soldiers, and society that animated his books. Now, Tim O’Brien is trying to write again. He thinks the country is past due for a conversation about war’s impact. He thinks we’re running out of time. And, at age 70, that he is too. THE WAR AND PEACE OF TIM O”BRIEN follows O’Brien on his journey writing his next and last book. What makes wars worth fighting? How do we write about war? What are the obligations of citizens with respect to war? What are the after-effects of war on individuals and families? Director Aaron Matthews (Token Exchange, The Paper), brings us inside the lives of the O’Brien family with his intimate film about the struggles of a world-renowned war writer illuminates the everyday ties between duty, art, family, and the trauma of war. But by doing so, the film captures the day-to-day intrusions of family life on Tim's creative process. The discussion naturally leads to the importance of fatherhood, and Tim's perception of all wars – past, present and future – given his own experiences as an infantryman in the Vietnam War. “I find it outrageous that we can spend 15 years in Vietnam killing 3 million people, and you can go to a school in America and they know nothing about the Vietnam War.” - Tim O'Brien Time Stamps: 03:31 - Where you can watch The War and Peace of Tim O'Brien. 04:17 - What the film is about. 05:30 - How Aaron met Tim and got the idea to make the film. 07:05 - What Tim's response was to a film being made about him. 08:37 - What it's like having a camera crew follow you around for so long. 10:47 - What it was like for Aaron being allowed so deeply into someone else's life. 12:27 - What Tim's family thought of the documentary's creation. 15:29 - What it was like for Aaron seeing Tim's creative process unfolding over time. 18:46 - The struggle and unpredictable nature of writing a book. 25:20 - First clip: Tim talks about his experience in Vietnam. 28:29 - What it was like for Tim to not write for over 15 years. 31:39 - The film's theme of fatherhood, and the importance of fathers. 37:45 - Second clip: how Vietnam changed Tim's life forever. 40:21 - The never-ending outrage Tim has towards war. 43:05 - The different reasons you can use to go to war. 47:50 - What Aaron's motivation to make the film was. 52:15 - The issues with using the word ‘war'. 56:10 - How interested Tim's sons are in the Vietnam war. 01:01:20 - The contrast Tim's warmth brings to the dark nature of the film. 01:04:43 - Will Tim ever write another book? Tim O’Brien has been called “the best American writer of his generation,” and America’s “poet laureate of war.” A Vietnam veteran, and National Book Award-winner, O’Brien is one of the great voices in modern American literature. The Library of Congress recently named his groundbreaking novel about the Vietnam War, The Things They Carried, one of the 65 most influential books in US history. But O’Brien hasn’t put pen to paper in nearly two decades. What makes wars worth fighting? How do we write about war? What are the obligations of citizens with respect to war?  What are the after-effects of war on individuals and families? The War and Peace of Tim O’Brien follows O’Brien on the journey of his last book, as he reveals the everyday ties between duty, art, family, and the trauma of war. The War and Peace of Tim O’Brien is available as a VOD on Tuesday 2 March 2021

Comedian Frank Skinner returns to the stand-up stage with his new tour Showbiz which he will be taking to the Edinburgh Fringe this summer where he first made his name, winning a Perrier Award in 1991. Now a radio and panel show host and co-writer of football anthem Three Lions with long time double act David Baddiel, he talks about the changing face of comedy and the thrill of improvisation. BAFTA have analysed nearly 130,000 non-news programmes between September 2017 and September 2018, and found out that climate change featured fewer times than cats, cakes and picnics. But how much is it the responsibility of the arts to enact social change through its programming? Aaron Matthews, the head of industry sustainability at BAFTA and David Butcher of The Radio Times discuss. Anna, a new immersive play by Ella Hickson, is a thriller set in 1968 East Berlin, a place where what you said in public and what you might admit in private needed to be rather different. The audience for this production have to wear headsets so as to experience things from the perspective of the secret service. Theatre critic Susannah Clapp reviews. George the Poet won big at this years British Podcast Awards in a wide range of categories - fiction, arts and culture and current affairs - for his show Have You Heard George's Podcast? He talks about what he felt he could do differently in a podcast as opposed to a new poetry collection. Presenter: Stig Abell Producer: Julian May

Transcription: Narrator: Hi there folks, this week on the polyphonic patter pod we're going to be talking to Fraser Walker a sound engineering student from Edinburgh and then briefly with Aaron Matthews who runs a home studio in Glasgow. Carrick: Hi Fraser, thanks for joining us this week. I'm going to start with the hard-hitting questions, Do you smoke? Fraser: Eh. Yeah. Yeah. But I'm pretty sure everybody in the industry does. Carrick: -breathe- Not necessarily everyone, but 90% of people Fraser: I don't think I've ever been to an event or a gig or an anything that where like you're recording in the studio or something like that and there hasn't been a fag break or my fag break or yknow or- Carrick: Or going, going out 'n' where is the bass player? Where is- Fraser: Where is the drummer? -snigger- Carrick: -snigger- y'know, out having a fag Fraser: Yeah Carrick: Y'know Fraser: It's not the best. Carrick: So, how do you feel about that? Fraser: Well, uh, smoking always seems to have coincided with musicians. It's very strange, it's a weird relationship. 'cause if, if you don't partake in tha- if you're not involved then you lose out on a lot of the social aspects. Carrick: Yeah. Fraser: Especially if you're, y'know, at a gig or something like that and you go out even if you're a viewer or you're running the desk you go out, you have some chat with the bands, yknow. Uh you put a few plugs in, see if you can get anywhere with connections 'n' usually they're out having a cigarette if you're going to see them after the gig. Carrick: It's certainly a, a, a large aspect of it I would, I would say it's the majority of conversations. I mean you can't have a conversation in a venue, y'know Fraser: No, exactly Carrick: Can't have a conversation while the bands are on so Fraser: And you can't have a cigarette in the venue Carrick: Exactly! Fraser: But yeah there is there is an aspect of professionalism to it which is kind of perplexing because uh. Uhm. uh. Nevermind. Carrick: I think the thing to remember is, there's a time and a place. Y'know? Fraser: -sniggers- Carrick: Y'know if you want to have a fag, have a fag after the soundcheck Fraser: Exactly Carrick: Or before your soundcheck don't go, “when's soundcheck? Half 7? Oh it's it's 28 minutes past now, we've got plenty of time for a fag” Fraser: -Laughs- Then they're meant to be on stage or meant to be recording and guh. Yup there's definitely a time and a place. Carrick: It certainly separates the amateurs from the professionals to a certain extent. What is, what is your biggest pet hate with bands who think they're on parr with the professionals in the industry. Fraser: Uh, I like, when you're going out and you're seeing stuff in the scene or even in the studio aswell. There's always one, but tuning pedals. And tuning pegs, y'know clip on tuners that would just clip on to the top of your headstock on your guitar, absolutely essential. Instead of just op hey op hey just gimme a minute while I turn all my machine heads and get in tune by ear and then they're not in tune and just when you're not in tune on a recording it's absolutely awful. Carrick: Yeah. It's always the worst thing between uh songs, it can't be helped in some cases but I mean I hate, hate hearing bands tune inbetween songs, it it its unbelievably unprofessional particularly when they haven't planned anything out, the vocalist's not talking to the crowd, no-ones talking to the crowd, the drummer's just smacking on some stuff y'know Fraser: The drummer's just -doo do dodo do doo- Carrick: The guitarist and the bassist are both trying to tune at the same time both putting each other off and then you're 10 minutes into the set and no-ones played a song. Fraser: Exactly Carrick: Well it would appear that that's all we have time for today, but thank you very much for coming in to talk to me and I shall talk to you again soon. Narrator: And now we're going to move on to a short talk with Aaron Matthews. Carrick: Hi Aaron thanks for making the time to come and talk to us today.I know you're pressed for time so we're just going to fire through some quick questions with you today. So first off, what's your biggest pet hate in the studio? Aaron: It's got to be when bands can't actually play their own songs. They come into the studio very confident uhm and then it comes to playing tight to a click and they just lose it or they can't harmonise parts together and aw, it's a shambles. Carrick: I can see how that would be frustrating, particularly when you're recording Aaron: Oh aye you dinnae ken the half o' it. Carrick: Okay, so, second question. What is the strangest experience you've had in the studio with a band? Aaron: Well actually there was a time that eh a band came into record and the drummer had broke his leg 2 days before hand and so could not play the part but they had already prebooked and prepaid so the singer came in and played his parts with his feet and then we rerecorded the drummer playing with his hands, so the cymbals and the snares and whatnot, strange. Carrick: That is actually rather strange, but atleast you've got a good story out of it! Aaron: Aye, aye I suppose Carrick: And lastly, What artist or band, dead or alive, would be your dream to record Aaron: Ach it's gotta be Led Zeppelin hasn't it Carrick: haha- of course. Narrator: Okay so that's all the time we got here at the Polyphonic Patter Pod this week, hope you've all enjoyed and we'll see you next week.

详细内容请关注俺们今天的微信!!! That's the way Fijians support their rugby players. Yesterday at the Youth Olympic games in Nanjing, the Fijian men lost a hard fought battle to France in the semifinals, despite enthusiastic support from family members and fellow athletes. Rugby Sevens is one of the 31 sporting events featured at the second edition of the Youth summer Olympic games in Nanjing. But more significantly, this event marks rugby's official return to the Olympic fold after a 92 year absence. The last time rugby was played in an Olympics was at the Paris Games of 1924. Rugby fans have waited a long time for their beloved sport's return, and next up is Rio 2016. The level of play is a fair indicator of which countries are rugby powerhouses and which are still developing. There were strong performances from the top four: France, Argentina, Kenya, and Fiji. Maurice Tikasilva was disappointed her son and team Fiji lost out on the chance for the gold, but was proud of the way he broke his wrist and didn't quit. "The first game, I mean they were doing good all along until today, but we supported our sons. He played good but he broke his wrist from the first game, he had the first touchdown for USA, but he stood for his team and played right through." Rugby sevens has grown in popularity around the world, but recently the competitiveness of the various countries competing in the Sevens circuit has exploded. In addition to the usual powerhouses like New Zealand and South Africa, countries without rugby roots, like China, Japan, and the US, have also become more competitive in recent years. Michael Matthews and his family were in the stands supporting their son Aaron Matthews, who plays flyhalf for team USA. He said team USA has gotten better recently, although they still aren't a top contender for the podium: "The competition is good. America has to do some more things to work together as a team, but overall the competition is good but it's showing us where we need to get better… Support, teamwork, we have the talent, the talent's there, but it's just the overall strategy of the game. Aaron Matthews and many of his teammates are first-generation rugby players. Usually the story goes that these American teens take up rugby during their football off-season to stay in shape, but then they end up getting hooked on rugby. China is another country that has seen rapid developments in the sport of rugby. The Chinese men didn't send a team to the youth games this year, but the women's team had some dominant victories during the group stages. Anchored by talented players like Liu Xiaoqian and Wang Tingting, the Chinese team stomped over Canada, Tunisia, the USA, and Spain before falling in a rematch with Canada in the semis. They'll compete for the bronze medal later today.
