When it comes to Pat Ahearne, it's a really interesting story. He was the NCAA CWS MVP in 1992 when his Pepperdine Waves went all the way. That effort surely helped Pat get his 1st MLB contract with the Detroit Tigers. He pitched 4 games for them in 1995 starting three of them, over a two week period in June. But he was not able to make it back to the big leagues. Yet he kept on persevering playing another 15+ years in various locations professionally all over the globe. These days Pat does some remote analytics and coaching at www.thewayofbaseball.com and has launched a retail tea business called www.insidecornertea.com based on his experiences traveling and tasting tea in many different countries. Other regions in red will move to orange then too, apart from Northland. SkyCity Entertainment Group CEO Michael Ahearne says told Mike Yardley the cap on numbers is tricky under red, but trade has picked up and restaurant bookings are strong. “I think we can all look forward to certainly a great New Year's Eve, and we're looking forward to next year now with a little bit more confidence,” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Andy and Martin find themselves in their new slot of the 14th day of every month and thankfully (workload-wise) an episode with no extras to edit! This time we explore the culty 1998 6-part Channel 4 drama, Ultraviolet, written and directed by Doctor Who legend Joe Ahearne. Although they definitely didn't hate it, they are both struck by how serious and po-faced it is and question what might be missing. Humour? Engaging characters? The word vampire? Be nice. As they critique the series they inevitably touch on This Life, Buffy and Being Human. They also consider whether a second series was expected and how they feel about the fact that Ahearne had to get this series commissioned as police procedural first and a supernatural drama second. Also Andy would like to know if you went to that big Brazilian conference in Rio in 1992, because everyone who was 'green' was there. Next Time: A Very Peculiar Practice.

Alan is currently a Professor of Economics and Director of the Whitaker Institute at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and has also taught economics at UCD, DCU and the Carnegie Mellon University. Coined by the Independent News & Media Group as "the man who told you so”, Alan is an internationally renowned economist, and was one of the very few people that spoke out before the economic collapse warning that the country was headed straight for it in 2007. Alan has worked as a special advisor to Brian Lenihen in 2011 and in the United States where he served as external advisor to the Strategy, Practice and Review Department of the International Monetary Fund, advising IMF senior management on how the Fund could better support the efforts of countries at all levels of income to boost growth and create jobs in the period ahead.
On this episode, Mike Ahearne shares some of his research about how to get the most out of core performers in your sales force!
In this episode, we spoke with Michael Ahearne PhD, a professor and researcher at the University of Houston. Mike is an expert in sales incentives, so we talked about the behavioral issues that come to light with – mostly – bad incentive design. Mike’s work with Tom Steenburgh, PhD at the University of Virginia’s Darden School has introduced a new way of thinking about salespeople. This was highlighted in a Harvard Business Review article from July-August 2012 called "What Really Works." These two researchers coined the use of the terms Stars, Core and Laggards to describe salespeople on their performance journey. One of the things we took away from our conversation with Mike was that the emphasis on Stars and Laggards is overshadowing the Core performers – those in the middle 60%. We touched on some big mistakes common to sales incentive design and the importance of measurement. We also talked about the Baseball Hall of Fame, General Colin Powell, and automobile sales. In our Grooving Session, Kurt and I wondered into talking about outdoor concert experiences and want to encourage everyone who loves music to check out Milwaukee's Summerfest. It's a high-quality festival with lots of good music.

The past forty years have seen a surge in efforts to litigate under state constitutional provisions furthering individual liberties. Panelists could look to numerous examples of differences between the state and federal constitutions (examples include criminal justice, property rights, same-sex marriage, education/school choice, labor, speech, and economic liberty) and explore how such differences have affected litigation strategy and forum shopping. Which emerging controversies are ripe to be litigated in state courts as opposed to the federal courts? What about business and arbitration cases? In the light of the results of the 2016 election, might some litigators further turn to the state courts to best protect liberty in light of changes to the federal bench? -- This panel was part of the 2017 Annual Western Chapters Conference at The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, CA on January 28, 2017. -- Litigating State Constitutional Issues -- Thomas F. How did two right wing presidents use culture to govern France? In Government through Culture and the Contemporary French Right (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), Jeremy Ahearne, a Professor of French Studies and Cultural Policy Studies at the University of Warwick, explores are range of examples to probe the decade of Right Wing government between 2002 and 2012. Drawing on the implicit/explicit distinction in cultural policy studies, Ahearne considers how core cultural concepts have changed in France, for example the French idea of ‘laicity’ and state secularism, as well as discussing specific cultural examples. These include television and media policy, museum building, eduction policy and the political uses of French history. Overall the book is framed by the continuities and differences between the Chriac and Sarkozy regimes in France, along with the struggle for hegemony over culture and thus over government. The book will be of interest to cultural policy, cultural and media studies and French scholars, as well as those interested in examples of the governmental use of culture. Dave O’Brien is the host of New Books In Critical Theory and is a Senior Lecturer in Cultural Policy at the Institute for Cultural and Creative Entrepreneurship, Goldsmiths College, University of London. His research covers a range of areas between sociology and political science, including work on the British Civil Service, British Cultural Policy, cultural labour, and urban regeneration. His most recent books are Cultural Policy: Management, Value and Modernity in the Creative Industries and After Urban Regeneration (edited with Dr. Peter Matthews). He tweets @Drdaveobrien. The Three Who Rule are travelling back in time this week to the wild, wooly days of 2005, when a certain program about a madman in a box first re-graced our screens after a long, long hiatus. Though we take the success of Doctor Who as a matter of course these days, in those early stories the show could have easily failed, and the fact that it didn’t is in no small part due to the work of one Joe Ahearne, gentleman director and subject of the Miniscope. Join Steven, Warren and Chris as they dissect the work of one of the most important directors of new Who…and also waste your time beforehand with news, japes and the introduction of P-Cap and J-Co to the “irritating shortened names for actors” pantheon. Check out the show notes at http://www.radiofreeskaro.com
When Joseph was younger he felt that he was very smart and that rules were merely suggestions meant for testing, if not for breaking. He created a whole philosophy around shoplifting. That philosophy led to many detours and misadventures. The first tenet in the philosophy of stealing is pretty simple -- don't get caught. A corollary to this first tenet is --if you do get caught, and you are able to, run like hell. Here's a story about Joseph's first insights into the very real consequences of stealing.
