In recent years, Ireland has seen a steady increase in anti-immigration, racist and conspiracy laden politics. What began as an online fringe has manifested in recent months and years into events such as the Dublin riots in 2023, or the burning down of buildings destined to house asylum seekers across the country. While the sentiment and emotion behind Ireland's anti-refugee activists tends to be represented in the media by racist and xenophobic protesters, there are underlying cultural and societal issues that have been trigger points the political fringe have latched on to.Here, we delve into the issues that have given rise to far-right sentiment in Ireland, such as the housing crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic and post 2008 austerity.Roscrea crew: Oisín Deignan, Peter Cooney and Eoin Ronayne. Tim Meagher from Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, who will host this year's Irish grassland Association Beef Event, is on this week's Beef Edge podcast to discuss his farm system, while Paddy Casey from the Irish Grassland Association highlights what to expect at the event. It will take place on Tuesday June 10th, with the event kicking off at 6:30 pm sharp and will conclude at 8:30 pm. Tim operates a store-to-beef system on 88 ha of grassland and 24 ha of tillage. When he took over the reins, he pushed suckler cow numbers to 90 – they were predominately Limousin which were crossed with a quality Charolais stock bull; heifers at the time were ran with an Angus bull. Separately, weanlings were also purchased from the west of Ireland. At the time, the farm was also home to roughly 200 ewes. However, over a decade ago, Tim moved to simplify the operation and focused on moving to a traditional store-to-beef enterprise, prioritising on incorporating as much grass into the diet as possible. Looking at the stock present on the farm, it's evident that Tim - who does all the purchasing from marts in the west of Ireland - has a keen eye for quality. Heifers and bullocks are bought in September and October each year weighing in the 500 – 520 kg bracket. These are then finished the following year from July to October as they come fit for slaughter; all cattle are slaughtered under 30 months-of-age. Currently, there is 252 head of cattle on the farm - 160 bullocks and 92 heifers. During the grazing season, the cattle are run in large batches of roughly 40-50 head in a paddock system; there are roughly 43 paddocks on the farm. Strip wires are also used to achieve desired clean outs and to manage paddocks correctly. In the springtime, all cattle are grouped according to age (January, February, March and April-born calves) to ensure easy management during the summer period. Tim places a huge focus on preserving top-quality silage as a winter feed. If he can hit 75% plus DMD silage, he can cut out the need for meal over the winter. However, due to weather conditions in 2024, silage quality ranged from 68% to 73% DMD on the three cuts harvested last year. As part of the operation, Tim places a big focus on animal health to ensure all animals reach peak performance during their stay on the farm. Vaccination and dosing are carried out when required, and Tim has invested in state-of-the-art handling facilities to manage animals efficiently and safely. Tim first introduced clover onto the farm in 1998 and now both red and white clover play a pivotal role in silage production and on the grazing platform. Since incorporating clover into the system, he has reduced the reliance on chemical nitrogen (N), while not negatively impacting the kilograms of beef sold off the farm. A slurry aeration system is also present on the farm. Tim places a huge emphasis on health and safety and outlined his handling facility and technologies he uses to be safe and labour efficient Paddy Casey said that the Irish Grassland Association National Beef Event is an event not to be missed. Following such a fantastic event on Martin Shaughnessy's farm in Mayo last year, Paddy says really it's a very social evening for all beef farmers. Everyone is invited to the free event kindly sponsored by FBD Insurance and the move this year from a suckling farm to a finishing farm will showcase the top quality stock that Tim is purchasing in the west and finishing efficiently with grass key to his system. The new commission-free Love Tipperary Gift Card has gone live in the county with over 190 businesses accepting the card, including national brands and independent businesses. Tipperary businesses say the new gift card will drive footfall in local towns, take 'shop local' to the next level and provide an easy way to reward staff. County Tipperary Chamber and Tipperary County Council are behind the newly launched county-wide gift card for the towns of Carrick-On-Suir, Clonmel, Cahir, Cashel, Tipperary Town, Thurles, Templemore, Nenagh and Roscrea. Available to buy online as physical gift cards or digital e-cards, a range of shops, restaurants, salons, attractions and services are participating. Edel Kennedy is the owner of ladieswear boutique Edel's Boutique in Nenagh and said the gift card is a positive move for the county: "Nenagh is a thriving market town with many wonderful restaurants, coffee shops and of course boutiques. It's a shopper's paradise, we have it all! Nenagh's success can definitely be attributed to the fact that so many of the businesses are managed and run by the owners. We really do care about our customers and our town. Edel's Boutique has been in Nenagh for 19 years and has seen so many changes in that time, including plenty of challenges for small business owners. "The gift card is a fantastic initiative because it keeps money in the community. Small businesses have to pay commission to accept the national gift cards which is tough when margins are already tight. But the Love Tipperary Gift Card is commission free. As we approach the Christmas trading period, we as business owners are very excited for the launch of the gift card. We feel positive that we can take 'shop local' to the next level and put Tipperary on the map. "In Ireland, we have such a great incentive to reward staff tax free through the Small Benefit Exemption scheme and what better way to reward staff than the Love Tipperary Gift Card, encouraging employees to shop in the county, driving footfall and helping create thriving towns where people want to live and work. It's a no-brainer for organisations." A unique feature of the gift card is that it can be spent with both national brands and independent businesses, including New Look in Clonmel. Aisling O'Meara is the store manager and said: "New Look in Clonmel is one of the most profitable in Ireland but even as a national brand, we'd noticed a drop in footfall and were keen to look at initiatives to increase both footfall and dwell time in Clonmel. When we heard about the Love Tipperary Gift Card, we said 'this is amazing and how do we get involved'. "Even though New Look is a big brand, we're all local businesses staffed by local people and we all have pride in our town. By working together and backing each other through the gift card, we can help our town and our businesses to succeed. "The great thing about the Love Tipperary Gift Card is that it has to be spent in Tipperary county and will encourage people to visit Clonmel and other towns. I think the choice on offer with the card is really good. People will look at where to spend it, visit one business, and likely stay to try others. We have a reward and recognition scheme at our store, and this year we will buy the Love Tipperary Gift Card because it puts the money we invest in rewards back into our town." 5th generation Tipperary Town business O'Rahelly Sports is also participating. Bryan O'Rahelly said the gift card promotes the county: "The fact that people will have a card in their wallet - physical or digital - that has Tipperary on it is brilliant. It's a bit of advertising for our county and it's a push for people to shop local who might not have otherwise. It also means it's less likely to be forgotten about. "Some of the national gift cards have a 10% commission for businesses to accept the card whereas the Love Tipperary Gift Card has no commission, so when people buy the Love Tipperary Gift Card as a present, or orga...
County Tipperary Chamber and Tipperary County Council are collaborating to introduce a county-wide gift card to champion 'shop local' and boost the local economy. The Tipperary Gift Card is set to launch pre-Christmas as part of efforts to drive footfall and spend across the county and in the towns of Carrick-On-Suir, Clonmel, Cahir, Cashel, Tipperary Town, Thurles, Templemore, Nenagh and Roscrea. Once launched, the Tipperary Gift Card will only be able to be spent with registered businesses, in person, locking spend into the county. There will be a 0% commission rate for the first 12 months for Tipperary businesses to accept the new gift card, keeping 100% of the transaction within the business. All types of businesses are eligible to accept the card, including retail, hospitality, leisure and tourism, health/beauty and services, with no additional equipment required. Businesses don't have to be a County Tipperary Chamber member to be a part of the new gift card. Michelle Aylward, Chief Executive at County Tipperary Chamber said: "Local businesses are the backbone of our Tipperary communities and now is the time for us to work together on a single shop local gift card for the whole county that will be transformative for our towns. "The Tipperary Gift Card is a phenomenal opportunity for Tipperary businesses to bring people through their doors with money to spend. With the zero commission to accept the card, there is no reason for a business not to be a part of this gift card. And as all types of consumer facing businesses can accept the card, it spreads out the benefit across Tipperary. It will provide tangible support for businesses and help to pull our communities together." Sinead Carr, C.E. of Tipperary County Council stated: "The availability of such an opportunity in County Tipperary is something I have long envisaged and I am particularly delighted to see that it will be in place for the Christmas 2024 period. Registering to accept the forthcoming Tipperary Gift Card is straightforward and cost-free. As we approach the key Christmas trading period, being a part of the gift card is a route to new revenue and new customers." The Tipperary Gift Card will be part of the multi award winning Town & City Gift Card concept active across Ireland in Ballinrobe, Carndonagh, Drogheda, Letterkenny, Sligo and Waterford. Over €7 million Town & City Gift Cards were sold in Ireland in 2023, with around 80% of sales to organisations for staff rewards and incentives. Colin Munro is the managing director of Miconex and said: "What makes the Tipperary Gift Card unique is the technology behind it. The card is Mastercard backed so the balance gets automatically updated when customers spend. Customers can check their balance in moments using the QR code on the gift card. And there will be a digital version of the card that customers can upload to digital wallets. This all makes the process of accepting the gift card friction-free for businesses, and that is vital." Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council Cllr Declan Burgess stated: "The collaboration between County Tipperary Chamber and Tipperary County Council on the forthcoming county-wide Tipperary Gift Card is a fantastic example of organisations joining together for the benefit of their communities both socially and economically. When we look at the success of Town & City Gift Card programmes across Ireland, the potential of the new gift card to keep Tipperary money in Tipperary towns is considerable." See more stories here.

But after a life-threatening illness, many speculated that he would never return to his dominant form. He had also gone through a life-changing transition by accumulating more wealth in one year than most men acquired in a lifetime, and he was freely spending his fortune. Make sure you read/listen/watch parts one and two. Hart's six-day world record of 565 miles had been broken by Charles Rowell (1852-1909) of England by one mile in November 1880, which deeply bothered Hart. In January 1881, he accepted a challenge from Rowell to meet head-to-head later in the year. That became his focus and he tried to get back into world championship shape. But then another rival appeared on the scene full of racist hatred. Racism from a Competitor John Hughes John “Lepper” Hughes (1850-1921) of New York did not hide his racist hatred for Hart. He had been a “poor day laborer” before he found success in pedestrianism. He was born in Roscrea, Tipperary, Ireland, and was the son of a competitive runner. When he was a boy, he was a fast runner, won some races, and could run close to hounds in fox hunts. With no formal education, he emigrated to America in 1868 at eighteen, became a citizen, and worked for the city of New York in Central Park. It was said that he was “stubborn as a government mule.” He was called, “the Lepper” because of his peculiar way of walking with an odd jumping gait. 2nd Astley Belt Race - O'Leary and Hughes Hughes was known for his temper and often showed inappropriate behavior in races. He desperately wanted to be recognized as the champion pedestrian of the world. It was reported, “Hughes is a boastful and ignorant fellow, with a fine physique and unlimited confidence in his powers.” He had a deep personal hostility against fellow Irish American, Daniel O'Leary, who had beaten him soundly in the Second Astley Belt Race in 1878. Hughes blamed his backers for purposely poisoning his milk and swindling him out of all his prize money. Hughes in International O'Leary Belt Since then, Hughes had experienced some success but had failed to win any of the big six-day races. His best six-day mark was 520 miles, when he finished sixth at the Rose Belt Race in 1879, won by Hart. But finally, on January 29, 1881, Hughes had the finest race of his career when he broke the six-day world record, achieving 568 miles in the “First O'Leary International Belt Race” held at the American Institute Building in New York City. Hart did not compete in the race, choosing instead to get ready to defend the original “American” O'Leary Belt, to be held the following month. As the Third O'Leary Belt approached, Hughes desperately wanted to win that O'Leary belt too and beat Hart. He boasted he would cover 600 miles. Hart and Hughes Fight In 1881, Bernard Wood's Gymnasium and Athletic Grounds on North 9th and 2nd Street (Wythe Ave) in Brooklyn, New York, was a popular place for runners to train on an indoor sawdust track. In February 1881, both Hart and Hughes used the track to train for the upcoming O'Leary Belt. Hughes would often yell hate-filled racist slurs at Hart. Hart had nothing good to say about Hughes. One Sunday afternoon, while both were training there, they competed in an ego-based sprint together, which Hughes won. Hart joked that at the upcoming match there would be no poison soup, referring to Hughes' excuse for losing the Second Astley Belt. He added he would beat Hughes at the upcoming match. “Hughes turned around and shouted, ‘You lie, you black (n-word).' Saying this, he struck Hart with a powerful blow under the chin. Hart fell flat on his back but was up again in an instant and hit Hughes over the right eye.” They continued to deliver blows, but Hart was no match for the bigger Hughes. Trainer Happy Jack Smith jumped in and separated them. “As Hart went away,
