Tuesday, 25 April 2023   Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. Acts 16:14   Note: The tenses of the verbs used by the NKJV are not in accord with the Greek. An accurate rendering is, “And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple of the city of Thyatira, worshiping God, was listening. The Lord opened her heart to attend to the things being spoken by Paul” (BLB). This will be used.   In the previous verse, the group of missionaries went to the riverside of the city at Philippi, sitting down and speaking to the women who met there. Next, Luke records, “And a certain woman named Lydia.”   As often happens in Scripture, a figure is introduced, highlighting him or her. Even though there was an unknown number of women gathered, as evidenced by the previous verse, one is especially highlighted. Her name, Lydia, is believed by some to be connected to the Ludim recorded as early as Genesis 10:13. The Ludim were descended from Mizraim, the son of Ham. From there, Lydia would mean something like From Lud.   Abarim provides details on how this came about, saying, “Someone from לוד (Lud) would be called לודי (Luday). A female Ludite would be called לודיה (Ludyah), which transliterated into Greek would form Λυδια (Luddia). That name transliterated into Latin forms our familiar name Lydia.”   The name Lydia was apparently popular among the Greeks, and so it may or may not be that she was named this because she was a descendant of the Ludim.   Of this woman, possibly from this ancient people group descending from Ham, it next notes she was “a seller of purple.” Purple, or porphura in Greek, was considered a highly valuable color. It was very difficult to obtain, coming from shellfish. A person wearing such a color would normally be quite wealthy. It was the color often worn by royalty. HELPS Word Studies notes that there were three familiar shades of purple in the ancient world: deep violet, deep scarlet, and deep blue.   Being a dealer in this fabric meant that she would be well-connected and of good means. She is next noted as being “of the city of Thyatira.” This was a city found in the old district of Lydia which was in the Roman province of Asia. It will be mentioned three more times in Revelation 1 and 2. Albert Barnes notes the following –   “This [Thyatira] was a city of Lydia, in Asia Minor, now called Akhisar. The art of dyeing was early cultivated in the neighborhood of Thyatira, as we learn from Homer (Iliad, iv. 141), and as is confirmed by inscriptions found in that city - a circumstance which may be referred to as confirming the veracity of the statements of Luke even in his casual allusions.”   Of this woman, Lydia, it next says she was “worshiping God.” Being a present participle, it indicates that this was her regular conduct. Being a Sabbath, and being present with others who met, it may be that she was a proselyte. However, this may not be the case.   In Acts 10, it said that Cornelius was a devout man who feared God. This does not mean he was a proselyte. Like him, Lydia may have simply gone and worshipped God without knowing anything directly about Him from a Jewish context. However, with the arrival of these missionaries, it notes that she “was listening.”   The verb is imperfect. She listened and continued to listen. Her ears were attentive to what was being said, taking it in and processing it. During this time, Luke notes that, “The Lord opened her heart.”   Of this, Cambridge states, “St Luke recognizes that without this the word would have made no entrance.” There is no reason to assume this at all. They equate the reception of the word to an active participation of the Lord in opening her heart. This is completely contrary to what Paul writes elsewhere, such as, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).   Rather than an active zapping of the heart of Lydia by the Lord as suggested by Cambridge, it is a passive action resulting from hearing the word of the Lord. The Lord opened her heart through the message proclaimed. This is perfectly evident from Luke's next words. He says that her heart was opened by the Lord “to attend to the things being spoken by Paul.”   It clearly says through the use of an imperfect verb that she was listening and continued to listen. It then says that her heart was opened by the Lord. How? Through listening to the word of God being spoken forth. The word of God is an extension of who God is. He is presenting Himself through the word. If Paul and the others accurately presented the word of God to Lydia, which is what occurred, then the Lord was speaking through them. Thus, her heart was passively opened by the Lord through the process.   Life application: The Calvinistic thinking that God must actively and supernaturally intervene in each person who comes to Him dismisses the notion that the word of God is sufficient to do what it is purposed to do. Further, it dismisses the fact that the word of God is, in fact, a supernatural tool, given by God. To them, the word is insufficient to do what it was given to do. But the word itself says that it is sufficient –   “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:1   The claim of Cambridge that without the Lord's personal intervention in the process the word would have made no entrance is exactly the opposite of what is said by Jesus to the Jews in John 5. First, He says –   “Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved.” John 5:34 The point of Jesus speaking was for those who heard to be saved. He makes that perfectly obvious in His statement to them. A few verses later, He says –   “But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. 39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.” John 5:38-40   Jesus ties their rejection of Him to their failure to accept the word, not God's failure to actively change their heart through external stimulation.   God does not provide a zap with a cosmic defibrillator to suddenly jump-start a person's heart, opening it so that His word will suddenly be palatable to a person. The word is like a defibrillator all by itself. It provides all the zap a person needs to be opened so that they can respond to the call of God.   Some hearts, however, are un-zappable because they are predisposed to dismissing what the word says. The Calvinistic model of regeneration fails because it dismisses the purpose of why the word was given and it dismisses the power of the word to do what it is set forth to accomplish.   Whether you are saved or not, if your life is currently not geared towards the things of God, you need to have an attitude change. With that, pick up the word, read it, and receive the necessary zap to get you into the game or back into the game. The word is active and alive. It is ready to change you and mold you to the image of God in Jesus Christ. Let it do so!   Lord God, thank You for the wonderful word You have given us. It will make a difference in our lives if we simply allow it to do so. It is that powerful and it is that wonderful! Help us also to convey it properly so that others may hear and be saved. To Your glory, we pray. Amen.

The seven churches mentioned in the book of Revelation are ancient churches that existed in the first century in Asia Minor, which is in modern-day Turkey. Today, the sites of these churches are considered to be important pilgrimage destinations for Christians and are visited by many people each year. The exact age of these churches is not known, but it is believed that they were established in the first century, shortly after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Some of the churches were founded by the apostles themselves, and the letters to the seven churches in Revelation are among the earliest Christian documents in existence. The seven churches are located in the cities of Ephesus, Smyrna (modern-day Izmir), Pergamum (modern-day Bergama), Thyatira (modern-day Akhisar), Sardis (modern-day Sart), Philadelphia (modern-day Alaşehir), and Laodicea (modern-day Denizli). Some of these cities have substantial remains of ancient Christian buildings, including churches and basilicas, that are of great historical and architectural interest. These sites can be visited today and offer a glimpse into the early Christian world and the faith and devotion of early believers. The seven churches in the book of Revelation are seven literal churches that existed in the first century in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). They are mentioned in the first three chapters of Revelation. The book was written by John the Apostle, who was in exile on the island of Patmos when he received a vision from God. In this vision, Jesus Christ speaks to John and instructs him to write letters to these seven churches, which represent different types of churches and the challenges they faced. The seven churches are:Ephesus: The church in Ephesus was commended for their hard work and perseverance, but criticized for losing their first love.Smyrna: The church in Smyrna was persecuted and faced poverty, but was encouraged to be faithful even to the point of death.Pergamum: The church in Pergamum was criticized for allowing false teaching and immorality to flourish within their community.Thyatira: The church in Thyatira was commended for their love, faith, and service, but criticized for tolerating a false prophetess who led some members astray.Sardis: The church in Sardis was criticized for being dead and complacent, despite having a reputation for being alive.Philadelphia: The church in Philadelphia was commended for their faithfulness, despite facing opposition and persecution.Laodicea: The church in Laodicea was criticized for being lukewarm and complacent, and was encouraged to repent and be zealous for Christ. In the letters to these churches, Jesus offers encouragement, rebuke, and instruction to each community, calling them to repent and remain faithful to Him. These letters are also seen as having a broader application, as they offer guidance and insight to all Christians on how to live a faithful and obedient life in Christ.

Bosna Hersek, bu yıl 512'ncisi düzenlenen “Ayvaz Dede Şenlikleri” vesilesiyle yine renkli görüntülere sahne oldu. Ülkenin dört bir yanından yola çıkan atlı birlikler, Travnik yakınlarındaki Doni Vakuf'a bağlı Prusac kasabasında toplanarak, Bosna topraklarını İslâm'la tanıştıran şahsiyetlerden Ayvaz Dede'yi yâd ettiler. Ayvaz Dede inzivaya çekilerek, 40 gün-40 gece dua etmeye koyulur. Son günün sabahında, Kur'ân tilavet ettikten sonra uyuyakalan Ayvaz Dede, rüyasında iki beyaz koçun büyük bir gürültüye boynuz tokuşturduklarını görür. Gözlerini açtığında, kaya ortasından ikiye ayrılmış, oluşan 3-4 metre genişliğindeki yarıktan Prusac'a doğru gürül gürül bir su akmaya başlamıştır. Osmanlı asırları boyunca her yıl haziran ayının sonunda düzenlenen Ayvaz Dede'yi anma etkinliklerinin, geçtiğimiz yüzyılın başından itibaren artık Bosnalı Müslümanlar için “ispât-ı vücut” yerine geçmeye başladığını görüyoruz.

As more journalists stand trial in Turkey, the truth becomes more elusive

For nine hours on Wednesday, Özge Terkoğlu sat in the gallery of a Turkish courtroom hearing testimony against her husband, Barış Terkoğlu, the news director of OdaTV, an online TV channel. Watching her husband take the stand, she fretted about his weight loss over the past three months he spent in prison. Barış Terkoğlu is one of seven journalists from various media outlets facing charges over their coverage of the deaths of Turkish intelligence officers in Libya. An eighth defendant, a municipal worker in the western Turkish town of Akhisar, is accused of supplying pictures to the journalists of the funeral of one of the dead intelligence officers.Related: Maria Ressa: Duterte's 'weaponization of the law' is a threat to democracyThe deaths weren’t a secret — it was discussed in Turkey’s parliament and on social media. But these writers were accused of breaking state secrecy laws; the charges were deemed so serious that even during the pandemic, the journalists could not be released. Instead, they languished alone in their cells. It’s just the most recent example of how freedom of the press continues to shrink in Turkey — and the intense political pressure facing journalists to toe the line.“He’s very courageous in terms of writing on topics that are very hard to touch, that disturb people that have power. All those things that we have to go through as a family, we can handle it. But we don’t deserve it.”Özge Terkoğlu, wife of jailed journalist“He’s very courageous in terms of writing on topics that are very hard to touch, that disturb people that have power,” Özge Terkoğlu said of her husband. “All those things that we have to go through as a family, we can handle it. But we don’t deserve it.” Turkey is often cited by the Committee to Protect Journalists as the world’s largest jailer of media personnel in the world, alongside China and Egypt. Just this week, 19 Turkish journalists and media workers were scheduled for hearings for various offenses (including those on trial for breaking state secrecy laws), according to Expression Interrupted, a free speech tracking project. If things go as usual, some reporters will be released, others will pay fines and some cases will drag on for years. Related: How Turkey's Erdoğan went from populist hero to strongmanIn Terkoğlu’s case, the judges returned on Wednesday with a decision around 10 p.m. Three of the journalists, including Terkoğlu, were released while their trial continues. The others will likely remain in prison until the next hearing, which is scheduled for September.  Özge Terkoğlu and her husband, Barış Terkoğlu, are pictured with their young son. Credit: Courtesy of Özge Terkoğlu The ambiguity of the law and irregularity of how it is imposed is enough to make anyone rethink the work they do. Some reporters leave the industry or move abroad. Others establish alternative outlets online, like OdaTV. Little by little, political influence is reshaping how Turkish readers understand news about Turkey and its relationship with the world.  “Maybe 95% of national media, especially newspapers and TV stations, are owned by media companies that are close to the government,” said Eylem Yanardağoğlu, an associate professor of New Media at Kadir Has University in Istanbul. “What we call ‘mainstream media’ has almost disappeared.” On any given newsstand in Turkey, a casual reader will find several national newspapers with various political bents. On TV, viewers can flip through multiple news channels, including CNN’s Turkish affiliate. It’s easy to get the impression that Turkey has a healthy, diverse media environment, but this does not reflect reality, Yanardağoğlu said. This media consolidation ramped up as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan began to crack down on political rivals after the Gezi Park protests in 2013. At the time, network TV stations famously showed nature documentaries to avoid covering the events. Journalists who did venture out to cover the protests suffered injuries by police and threats from government officials, according to Reporters Without Borders. Three years later, following a bloody coup attempt on July 15, 2016, media arrests reached a nadir. At least 81 journalists were jailed in retaliation for their work the highest number in any one country counted at any time, according to CPJ.“Using your pen to serve international smear campaigns is not journalism,” Erdoğan claimed in 2017, after coming under fire for the number of reporters languishing in Turkish jails. Traditional media used to protect the public’s right to reliable information in Turkey, said Yanardağoğlu. Today, journalists who don’t toe the political line get pushed to alternative websites and social media, where the pay is lower, but there’s more freedom. “This is creating new debates: Whose job is it to tell the truth? And is it the truth?” Eylem Yanardağoğlu, Kadir Has University“This is creating new debates: Whose job is it to tell the truth? And is it the truth?” Yanardağoğlu said. As Turkey’s digital news organizations jockey for flashy news that gets clicks, the reliability of online content suffers. Dedicated fact-checking organizations try to create some semblance of order, but it has become more challenging for everyday readers to discern truth from propaganda. Even a Turkish-language news service funded by the Russian government has attained a level of popularity, due to its ability to freely criticize Erdoğan. Outside the courthouse, a group of colleagues and supporters of journalists on trial stood in the sun under a banner that depicts portraits of the six arrested writers with a cartoon of pencils turned into cell bars. “Every single morning, believe me, you wake up at 4 in the morning listening to the door and wondering if [the police] are about to come to get you.”   Zafer Arapkirli, journalist“Every single morning, believe me, you wake up at 4 in the morning listening to the door and wondering if [the police] are about to come to get you, said Zafer Arapkirli, a former BBC presenter who now hosts his own online news program. He wears a face mask with the phrase “susmayacağız” written over his mouth, which means “we will not be silent.” “I’ve been working as a journalist in this country for 43 years now. And we’ve gone through these sorts of stages … where journalists were … silenced, where all sorts of democratic institutions were … crushed. But in the end, democracy will win,” he said. “We believe in democracy.”Reuters contributed to this report.

The city was on the southern bank of the Lycus River, a branch of the Hermus River. Although never a large city, Thyatira was a thriving manufacturing and commercial center during New Testament times. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of many trade guilds and unions here. Membership in these trade guilds, necessary for financial and social success, often involved pagan customs and practices such as superstitious worship, union feasts using food sacrificed to pagan gods, and loose sexual morality. The Book of Revelation refers to a certain woman known as "Jezebel" who taught and beguiled the Christians at Thyatira to conform to the paganism and sexual immorality of their surroundings (Rev 2:18-29). In the church in Thyatira, one of the "seven churches which are in Asia" (Rev 1:4), Jezebel's followers seem to have been a minority because the majority of Christians in this church are commended. The apostle Paul's first convert in Europe was "a certain woman named LYDIA...a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira" (Acts 16:14).
