Thanks to the Tracing Owls podcast for this week's suggestion. Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to learn about a topic suggested by the host of the podcast Tracing Owls, because I'm actually a guest on that podcast in an upcoming episode! I think the episode releases later this week. I'll put a link in the show notes, but be aware that while the podcast is interesting and often very funny, with topics that focus on weird stuff related to science, most episodes are not appropriate for younger listeners. (I think my episode should be okay.) Several years ago now there was a movie called Madagascar, which is about a group of zoo animals that end up shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar. I love this movie, especially the lemur King Julian, but one of my favorite characters is a hippopotamus named Gloria, voiced by Jada Pinkett Smith. The island country of Madagascar is off the southeastern coast of Africa, but as we talked about in episode 77, it's been separated from the continent of Africa for millions of years and the animals of that country have mostly evolved separately from the animals of Africa. That's part of why the movie Madagascar is so funny, since the main characters in the movie are all native to Africa—a lion, a zebra, a giraffe, and Gloria the hippo—and don't know anything about the animals they encounter on Madagascar. Like this guy: [King Julian clip] But it turns out that hippos did once live on Madagascar, and that's what we're going to learn about today. We're not sure when the first humans visited Madagascar, but it was at least 2500 years ago and possibly as much as 9500 years ago or even earlier. By 1500 years ago people were definitely living on the island. It's likely that hunting parties would travel to Madagascar and stay there for a while, then return home with lots of food, but eventually people decided it would be a nice place to live. Madagascar is a really big island, the fourth largest island in the world. It's been separated from every other landmass for around 88 million years, and has been separated from Africa for about 165 million years. Many of the animals and plants that live on Madagascar are very different from the ones living anywhere else in the world as a result. To put this into perspective, here's your reminder that the closest living relative of the hippopotamus is the whale, and 60 million years ago the common ancestor of both hippos and whales was a small semi-aquatic animal. That was about 28 million years after Madagascar was on its own in the big wide ocean, and 105 million years after the landmass that we call Africa broke off from the supercontinent Gondwana and began moving very slowly into the position it's in today. When Madagascar finally broke free of the landmass we now call India, dinosaurs were still the dominant land animal. So why are there remains of small hippos on Madagascar? How did the hippos get to Madagascar and why aren't they still around? Did the hippo originate in Africa or in some other place? So many questions!

A tragédia continuava tragédia. Nada havia que a amenizasse. Mas a beleza a transfigurava. A beleza a tornava suportável! June 6, 1993 is a day that the small town of Windsor, North Carolina will never forget. With just under 2000 people in the 90s, Windsor was known for being a quiet and safe place with a very low crime rate. Unfortunately, that would change with the closing staff of the local Be-Lo Grocery Store that Sunday evening. A man hid somewhere inside the store, and sprang on the store manager after he locked the doors, demanding all the money be put into a plastic grocery bag. He would then escort all of the staff to the back of the store, tie them up, and the slaying would begin. Fortunately there were survivors that would go on to give police a description of the man, and a sketch would be distributed out to the public. 29 years later, and this case is still unsolved, and the gunman's identity remains a mystery. Will we ever know the man behind the murders that took place in this tiny town?If you have information about this case, call the WindsorPolice Department (252) 794-3111 and if you haveinformation about any unsolved case in NorthCarolina, please contact the North Carolina State Bureauof Investigation: (800) 334-3000.Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/755467142466635/Instagram: @ColacitycrimeEmail your listener stories and case suggestions: colacitycrime@gmail.comCheck out the website for our local non-profit: www.eccmpi.org Check out our collab with Crime Labs YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOZ1FRAOGm1VnzI8ow_XGcw/videosPlease subscribe, rate, and review our show on Apple Podcasts and Spotify!SourcesThe Kay Files on youtubewww.apnews.comwww.ncsbi.govscholar.lib.vt.edutrace evidence on Youtube

Of course, those things have not been fully realized in the case of McCarrick - U.S. Catholics continue to ask about McCarrick's money, and how it impacted his abuse – and they've not yet gotten answers. Nor have Catholics gotten clear answers in the cases of Zanchetta, or Bishop Franz-Josef Bode, or Bishop Rick Stika, or several others. A Dutch magazine recently revealed that Bishop Carlos Belo of East Timor, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996, is a serial rapist of teenage boys. The crimes go back decades and explain his mysterious resignation in 2002 well before he reached retirement age. But has he been defrocked since then? Of course not. The presentation focuses on the ethical dimensions of modern international conflicts in which all aspects of society have become the battlefield. The modern format of international conflicts, called 'gray zone' conflicts, rarely involve direct military-to-military confrontation. Rather, contemporary conflicts can generally be characterized as low-intensity, perpetual hostilities that involve governments, civil society, and individuals. The media, cyberspace, educational institutions, and local organizations have become an inseparable part of the global great power competition. Illiberal regimes such as China and Russia have used these as platforms to proliferate their political interests into liberal democracies like the United States. This raises the question of how can the United States, and other democracies, counter these authoritarian influences without resorting to 'democratic backsliding,' for example through censorship.

Argentina has the most US dollars in circulation of any country after the US. Argentina's high inflation rate, currency controls, and multiple devaluations make it difficult for people to plan for their future. Saving is hard, and many people don't have the tools to save efficiently. Manuel Beaudroit is co-founder and CEO of Belo, a digital wallet that helps Latin Americans plan for their financial futures by saving and spending in both fiat and crypto.Manuel started out studying biology, worked at Accenture, and then created multiple businesses, including a brand of customized USB flash drives, before starting Belo. In this episode of Crossing Borders, I sat down with Manuel to talk about Belo, his thoughts on entrepreneurship in Argentina, and how Belo is solving a pressing financial problem. We also talk about the misunderstandings surrounding cryptocurrencies. Why can it be hard to save money in Latin America?Inflation in Argentina is approximately 60-70% per year, and for many years acquiring US dollars was the most efficient way to save money. At the same time, government regulations and currency devaluation made it increasingly complex for people to buy US dollars. In this episode, Manuel explains why crypto is becoming popular among Argentines and other Latin Americans and why many are eager to try new financial technologies.Transforming people's perceptions of cryptocurrencyRetail-oriented cryptocurrency products are often built with complex technologies. Sometimes they mimic Wall Street dynamics, but very few people understand how to trade stocks without losing lots of money. Complex user experiences won't work. Manuel finds that the cryptocurrency industry insists on talking about the technology that surrounds it. Instead, he believes it should focus on discussing the problems it can solve. In this episode, Manuel shares why one of Belo's main features is its simplicity and accessibility.Outline of this episode:[01:20] - About Belo[01:59] - What does inflation look like in Latin America versus the U.S.?[04:30] - Manuel's background[06:00] - Previous ventures before Belo[10:27] - Why is bitcoin popular in Argentina?[13:25] - Why Manuel started Belo instead of anything else[16:30] - How clients use Belo[19:43] - How will Belo's use cases and products evolve?[23:11] - Misunderstandings of crypto and Web3[25:56] - Book recommendations[26:45] - Advice to younger self[28:20] - What's next for BeloResources and people mentioned:Manuel BeaudroitBeloBitexAccentureBooksBuild: An Unorthodox Guide to Making Things Worth Making by Tony FadellTechnological Revolutions and Financial Capital: The Dynamics of Bubbles and Golden Ages by Carlota Pérez

The Big Picture: Hakeem Belo-Osagie on African Entrepreneurship

Grit & Growth

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 29, 2022 43:16

What are the unique challenges facing the African entrepreneurial ecosystem? How is the rapid growth of fintech startups impacting the Nigerian economy? And what does it take to become a modern business leader? Hakeem Belo-Osagie, accomplished businessman, philanthropist, and educator, has the experience and expertise to tackle all three.Few business leaders understand the systemic challenges facing African finance as well as Hakeem Belo-Osagio. For three decades, he's been a driving force in the Nigerian economy, working across the energy, finance, and telecom sectors. He left a decade-long career in the Nigerian government for the life of an entrepreneur — and he hasn't looked back. But it didn't start well, as Belo-Osagie explains:“I think I mightily over-estimated my abilities, and my first entrepreneurial venture in finance was a complete failure, the bulk of which was entirely my own fault. It was a wonderful lesson. And I was able to pick myself up. The second venture of mine, which was a securities trading company, went very well. Subsequent to that, I staged the takeover of a large government-owned bank that I realized after buying was effectively bankrupt.”Managing a hostile workforce at that bank, UBA, and working with seemingly hostile government regulators has taught Belo-Osagie about the importance of empathy, patience, and courage. Being aware of how much your employees and regulators really understand about the situation is key to success. As he explains about the bureaucratic mindset, when government officials don't understand something, the instinctive reaction is to say no.Ultimately, Belo-Osagie defines success, especially in Africa, this way:“We have to measure how well we're doing, not by how many people are on the Forbes cover, or by how many billionaires Africa has, but basically what has happened to the bottom 40 percent.
