On the seventh episode of The Avatar Podcast, host/producer Albert Chessa hypes out over — and dives deep into — the first (of TWELVE!) #ThePathToPandora articles releasing monthly across 2025, kicking off with a thorough, speculation-filled analysis of Nick's 3-page interview with James Cameron himself, before exploring the Achievements of Avatar, the possibility of Lo'ak as a bonus skin in the upcoming (heavily rumoured) Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 6, an Apocalypto-inspired Avatar RPG, and much more! We end the episode as we do each week with our Mailbag and (new-and-improved!) Weekly Showcase. Let us continue to celebrate our home…across the sea of fog…the Lands Between…together. • Rise, Tarnished, and be guided by grace to brandish the power of the Elden Ring and become an Elden Lord in the Lands Between. In the Lands Between ruled by Queen Marika the Eternal, the Elden Ring, the source of the Erdtree, has been shattered. Marika's offspring, demigods all, claimed the shards of the Elden Ring known as the Great Runes, and the mad taint of their newfound strength triggered a war: The Shattering. A war that meant abandonment by the Greater Will. And now the guidance of grace will be brought to the Tarnished who were spurned by the grace of gold and exiled from the Lands Between. Ye dead who yet live, your grace long lost, follow the path to the Lands Between beyond the foggy sea to stand before the Elden Ring. Albert gives his analysis on the teaser for 'Avatar: The Way of Water'. • Avatar is a multimedia universe centred on the indigenous peoples of the distant planet of Pandora, a reality-based paracosm created by filmmaker-engineer-activist James Cameron. Taking inspiration from (and ultimately acting as a paean to) our own earth and its many First Nations cultures, Avatar promotes 'artivism' (activism through art) to inspire changes in how we treat ourselves, others, and the planet. Before we go forward, let us look back on the masterpiece that started it all... • When legions of monstrous creatures known as Kaiju rise from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To fight back, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots called Jaegers, controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are connected via a neural bridge, called The Drift. But in the face of a relentless enemy, even the mighty Jaegers are proving nearly defenceless. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse. • We have a special request for our listeners. Before we set upon the path to the next chapter (and new World/Culture of Myth, likely Mayan) after Ragnarök, let us revisit where God of War's rebirth and continuation began... • God of War is an iconic series renowned for its action-packed gameplay and immersive storytelling. By delving into diverse pantheons, the series fosters cultural appreciation and broaden horizons, setting the stage for its multimedia future as a streaming series and more, allowing even more people to experience its epic tales. The franchise's maturation and evolution of interactive art showcases the Santa Monica Studio's growth, and through intricate narratives, stunning visuals and emotionally complex characters, God of War pushes boundaries and exemplifies the transformative power of video games as a form of artistic expression. • We have a special request for our listeners. My conversation with @maktariarchitecture was truly captivating. We delved into her journey, defying early expectations during her upbringing by pursuing a creative professional life instead, leading her to studying architecture at @bartlettarchucl (2024 will be her fifth and final year of study). We explored her passion for @starwars and newfound love for @dunemovie, her exciting collaboration with @empiremagazine and @wbpictures / @legendary, and much more. A shared appreciation for 'Art Attack' and the importance of maintaining an eclectic and balanced perspective in a world of extremes was discovered, fast friendships were made, and an open horizon of future @topicarchives conversations looms for all involved. • Morocco Relief: https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/morocco-earthquake-relief-fund/ Libya Relief: https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/libya-flood-relief-fund/ Nada: https://www.nadamaktari.com https://www.x.com/nadamaktari https://www.instagram.com/maktariarchitecture https://www.linkedin.com/in/nadamaktari https://issuu.com/nadamaktari/docs/barc009_23_ht01_maktarinada_the_future_of_brutalis https://issuu.com/bartlettarchucl/docs/bartlett_summer_show_book_2023 Show: https://www.albertchessa.com/producing https://www.instagram.com/dunepodcast https://www.x.com/dunepodcast • Dune is a foundational science fiction universe created in 1965 by Frank Herbert, with strong elements of mythology, ontology, mysticism, religion, politics, existentialism, philosophy, ecology and more. • We have a special request for our listeners. ‘Mars. The Red Planet. Its true name…is Barsoom.' ☄️ On the first episode of The Barsoom Podcast, producer Albert Chessa delves into his boundless (and, as the years pass, ever-increasing) kinship with Edgar Rice Burroughs' genre-pioneering work, without which the likes of Star Wars, Star Trek, Avatar, Dune, Valerian and even The Lord of the Rings would either never have happened, or become as popular they did, by making liberal use of its source material: concepts, aesthetics and themes that went on to shape our popular culture as as we know it (e.g. Jeddak/Jedi). With 2012's underrated masterpiece as our springboard, we'll examine one minute at a time, exploring a range of related and adjacent subjects and tangents, analysing each frame's symbolic and formal qualities, and speculating on what Barsoom's future may hold. Albert ponders on the sheer weight of responsibility that writer-director Andrew Stanton — a future guest of the show, Issus-willing (along with Michael Giacchino, Lynn Collins, Taylor Kitsch, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Haden Church, Ryan Church, Michael Kutsche, Vance Kovacs and many more) — his crew, and his cast must have felt during development, draws parallels and highlights polarities with the current reception of Dune, and concludes with a preview of the multi-year audiovisual journey that awaits listeners and viewers of the show going forward. A special thanks to Bill Corso, creator of Barsoom's intricate traditional cultural patterns and Academy Award-winning makeup designer, for your kind support. We look forward to having you on the show some day soon. Albert Chessa is joined by Brendan Wright for a discussion on Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Jurassic World. "The interconnected fields of film, interactive medium and television are set to bring us a suite of materials that genuinely feel like they are coming from a real, honest, natural place, from a creative and storytelling standpoint. In this episode Brendan and I discuss the state of things, obviously succumb (multiple times) to Star Wars giddiness, but equally we explore just why this is all happening, how these videos and my/his content are symptomatic to changes in these industries, and how for the first time in a while, it sincerely feels like the priority is now (as it should always be) simply telling a good story without going for cash-grabbing, pandering, bigger-badder-louder and less and less in touch with what really moves us, and has done so with all the classics: they all just focused primarily on earnestly telling a story. Just as with a person, if you sense they have an agenda and are getting all up in your face (looking at you, Ultron), I just disconnect. Whereas with the likes of Colin Trevorrow and J.J. Abrams, there is some sincere, respectful and exciting creative work being done in their upcoming films."
