We still have 2 unpublished episodes for everyone, but we found after listening back that most of the details were irrelevant since shifting our upload schedule. So naturally, after completing one of the most intense challenges of my gaming career, I have to show my survival prowess elsewhere. This time it is in the form of Black Myth: Wukong. This game is a masterpiece. The combat is fluid, the visuals are breathtaking, and the storytelling is S-Tier. I encourage anyone who has the means to, to give this game a try. If this is your first game in the genre, remember to be patient and observe everything. You won't regret it! The formula for this show remains similar to what you know if you've been a long-time listener. Aside from gaming content, we also are gifted in the realm of YAP. Whether it is regarding annoying but successful marketing campaigns, or a vendetta between two gas station co-workers at a local BP gas station, this segment is sure to bring some laughs and generate even a little curiosity. Lastly, we HAVE to talk about the most recent return of the 2x. We tackle the tug-of-war between our physical & emotional moral compass, and the legal facts. I'd say we're almost done with the Elden Ring talk, but I'd be lying. What can I say, this game is really growing on me and has taken a piece of my heart. Some of you seem to enjoy me sharing my thoughts on my first playthrough of their favorite game, so I'm gonna lean into it. Hello listener, This is a "retoss"  of a January 6th (no relation) episode, where we discussed 'From Software' games, particularly Elden Ring, particularly how  Sagi sucked at it, which led to his radicalization,  with him expressing Souls-phobic, extremist positions..It's not the first time.In the meantime Sagi went on a journey -- of self-discovery and community discovery -- through the 'Souls-Borne' gamer community, in its Twitch, YouTube and dedicated websites (stayed out of Reddit).He came back to talk about it with a gleam in his eye. The games received new meaning through their mediation with a community of other gamers, a new understanding of their purpose. Apparently his search for fellow disdainers of Elden Ring led him down a deep rabbit hole  of addiction (to YouTube Souls-Borne videos). He knew it. Elden Ring WAS bad.But  is was all a scam, a gateway drug; before long he was actively enjoying Dark Souls 1. Surely we have a powerful cult here.The ideas tossed here will take us through Monotheism's various versions of the Father: Dark Souls 1 features the father who is a present-yet-untouchable persona of death, conditioning the player/son through a survival-focused care/education, where the logic is as binary as life and death and the boy learns a value of overcoming adversity; an overcoming whose value can be shared with others (other Miyazaki "sons" - the Souls-borne community).Elden Ring, on the other hand, lets the player simmer in the vacuum of the father, where the height of achievement has been flattened for the sake of a freedom of possibility; an absent father since now success is idiosyncratic, it's not shared, it circulates (like money, whose value has no singularity by definition). Like in Protestant 'Predestination,' the only  thing you can share with others is that the meaning of your "works" in the world are, as far as the living are concerned, without spiritual consequence. The 'Elden Lord,' like the protestant "Salvation," is an empty signifier of a success that is indifferent to the manner of achieving it. Finding possibilities, like in Elden Ring, is lateral and disjointed; overcoming a challenge, like in Dark Souls, is more direct and cohesive. (Do we really  need to ask which is the better phallus?)When the community screams 'Git Gud,' more than a mere adolescent brag -- which Jake represented oh-so-well in this retoss -- they are referring back to the father that was still present in the Dark Souls games, in Bloodborne and Sekiro.This also brings up the angle of these games' relation to the father as rituals of masculinity, which  we use to make fair sense of the Souls-borne community, understanding them rather than judging them. Join us as we discuss the best starting class, where to invest upgrades, and the many unspoken rules you should know as you grow from a timid target to the one and only Elden Lord. Plus, more talk on Steam Deck and Valve's surprise, free Portal spin-off.

Whenever FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki releases a project, a debate about difficulty and accessibility erupts. His games are notoriously challenging as they put players in the role of a lowly hero who must overcome hordes of adversaries and impossibly powerful bosses. Players die from ambushes. They're overwhelmed by stronger foes. They die in traps. The campaigns are merciless and frustrating because players are given a minimal amount of information and tossed into a thresher. Critics ask what's the appeal of failing 75 times in a row. They object to a game that's so impenetrable that many just quit out of frustration. They complain there's no point to title what you can't finish. CHALLENGE AND REWARD The counterargument is that they don't understand that Miyazaki titles demand a lot from players. These aren't Nintendo platformers built solely for delight. Soulsborne titles, as they're popularly known, are mountains to be conquered or James Joyce novels to be read. As challenging as they are, they're equally rewarding as players scale the steep learning curve and uncover lessons about patience, perseverance, discipline and community. Miyazaki and his team's latest work, “Elden Ring,” is the most accessible. With the help of author George R.R. Martin, the campaign has a clear story as players take on the role of a Tarnished. These are exiles who are blessed by a guiding light that directs them to pieces of the Elden Ring. The powerful artifact created a peace in the realm known as the Lands Between until it was shattered and warring demigods took the Great Rune shards. As one of the Tarnished, players will have to fight these horrific bosses and re-forge the Elden Ring to become the Elden Lord. That's easier said than done as players start off as a weakling in a world full of danger. Newbies will figure out how to defeat foes and gain experience points called runes to level up. They'll also die within the first hours and lose all their XP. If they don't go back to the site of their death and retrieve the runes, they lose that work forever. It's punishing but the mechanic also makes every encounter intense. Miyazaki games aren't meant to be easy. The difficulty is intrinsic to the message and feelings the developers intend to communicate. How those lessons come across depends on whether players meet them halfway. Those who make an effort to learn the language of play will discover a rewarding conversation worth having. Happy Friday! Today on IGN The Fix: Games, we finally know what Elden Ring is about! Sort of. During Summer Games Fest, fans were treated to a gameplay trailer and even a release date for the upcoming Miyazaki title. The game, written in partnership with George R. R. Martin, is centered around a quest to piece together shards known as the Great Runes, in order to become an Elden Lord. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has received a next-gen update for PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. The free upgrade brings higher resolution textures and improves 60 fps performance to the acclaimed Respawn game. Fallout 76 is nuking its battle royale mode due to low engagement from players. The team over at Bethesda Game Studios will reassign those resources to increase support for other game modes in the multiplayer Fallout title.
