Starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman ‘Pacific Rim' was a hit at the box office but has failed to pick up the same devotion seen by the Toho or MonsterVerse franchises. It's time to go to 2013 with a young Charlie Hunnam, and a Guillermo Del Toro who said that he laid everything out in this film, and it was just him having fun! It's pop culture classic time, speaking about Pacific Rim! Pacific Rim, while not being the "first" American made kaiju film, was probably the first blockbuster American kaiju film that took the genre more serious, and paid a lot more tribute than others in the past. "Long ago, legions of monstrous creatures called Kaiju arose from the sea, bringing with them all-consuming war. To fight the Kaiju, mankind developed giant robots called Jaegers, designed to be piloted by two humans locked together in a neural bridge. However, even the Jaegers are not enough to defeat the Kaiju, and humanity is on the verge of defeat. Mankind's last hope now lies with a washed-up ex-pilot, an untested trainee and an old, obsolete Jaeger." I think, like most of the pop culture films that we revisit, while it may not be the greatest movie, it definitely deserves its respect, and a high place in kaiju history! If you're a kaiju fan, and somehow haven't taken a look back, you're doing yourself a disservice. Go watch it, and if nothing else, you'll get to see big robots, and cool monsters! We're going back overseas with this episode, this time to Norway. The Norwegian military has a reputation for high fitness standards, and therefore their special operations forces take fitness to another level. This week we'll be digging into the training and testing of the Marinejegerkommandoen, more commonly known in English as MJK or NORNAVSOC (Norwegian Navy Special Operations Command). Directly translated they are the Marine Jaegers, and they live up to that legendary name. Our guest Paul Solberg has a Masters in sport psychology and PhD in health psychology and physiology from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. He is an accomplished athlete in his own right, having represented Norway as a javelin thrower and also competing nationally in handball, powerlifting and weightlifting. After his athletic career he Coached for several of the best track and field throwers in Norway. These days he is the Head of the Strength Department at the Norwegian Olympic Training Center and Committee, but we're going to spend most of this conversation focused on his previous role. For many years he was the human performance program director for NORNAVSOC, where he built the training program they use today. He has also published close to 40 peer reviewed articles focusing particularly on muscle adaptations, recovery, power-training, motivation and well-being, and reliability of testing. We mentioned Magnus Midtbo's videos where he took the Coastal Rangers and Long Range Reconnaissance fitness tests, so here there are: Coastal Rangers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81Dz26FboU4 LRRP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-zAeifC2sQ

Before we go forward, let us look back on the masterpiece that started it all... • When legions of monstrous creatures known as Kaiju rise from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To fight back, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots called Jaegers, controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are connected via a neural bridge, called The Drift. But in the face of a relentless enemy, even the mighty Jaegers are proving nearly defenceless. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse. • We have a special request for our listeners. Philip and Bridget discuss 'Strange World' from Walt Disney Animation Studios. The Walt Disney Company celebrates its 100th anniversary and its feature animation division's 61st animated film, coinciding with a new castle logo redesign to celebrate the centennial milestone. With a premise pulled from pulp novels of the early twentieth century, 'Strange World' places viewers in the mysterious Victorian-styled land of Avalonia. Jaeger Clade is a famous explorer whose life's mission is to find passage through the impenetrable mountains surrounding the known world. Raised to follow in his father's footsteps, Searcher Clade abandons exploration in favor of science and learns to cultivate an energy-rich plant called Pando that technologically revolutionizes Avalonia. When the power of Pando is suddenly threatened, three generations of Jaegers must attempt to solve the problem and learn to work together as a family that hasn't always seen eye-to-eye. Hello, kaiju lovers! Nate has been waiting for this Ameri-kaiju episode for a long time—he gets to discuss one of his favorite films: Pacific Rim! He's joined by the three co-hosts of The Drift Space podcast—returning guests Jack “GMan” Hudgens and J.R. Viller, plus Jack's sister, Rebecca—to gush about how much they love it. Guillermo del Toro's masterful tribute to both tokusatsu and anime is a movie that is unabashedly itself with its archetypal but strong characters, incredible worldbuilding, and mind-blowing special effects. But beneath the beyond-cool chassis beats the heart of a grossly underestimated story of surprising depth. If you don't already love Pacific Rim, Nate and the Drifters will change your mind! Beforehand, Nate discovers data files for an abandoned ad campaign for an unknown kaiju named “Chimera.” After the broadcast, as you undoubtedly heard, a mysterious kaiju attacked the Island but was killed by the Drifters in their Jaeger, Bouncing Betty. Nate's live broadcast of that battle is included here. The prologue and epilogue, “Chimera,” was written by Nathan Marchand. A tern or gull plunges headfirst into the water, then bounces aloft grasping a small fish in its bill. But before the bird can swallow its catch, a Parasitic Jaeger swoops in. The jaeger nips the bird's wing, and it drops its hard-won fish. The pirate catches the fish in mid-air and gulps it down. But unlike its progenitor, the Netflix anime series Pacific Rim: The Black is an entirely different beast, with similar emphasis on the Kaiju and Jaegers but with a more serious tone and emphasis on characters and plot compared to the original. We also highlight this show's use of the concept of drifting as well as some excellent bait-and-switches and "oh sh!t" twist moments in its two short seasons, but criticize some very poor choices in character arcs down the line. Hello and welcome to the 68th episode of Film Freakz, the podcast about movies! Each episode is all about a single movie but this episode is about Pacific Rim from 2013. This podcast features YemmytheFerret (Yemmy), justkalas (Kalas), Taymation Studios (Tay), and GreedyWaffle (Nick). This movie was chosen by Tay who loves dumb fun. Long ago, legions of monstrous creatures called Kaiju arose from the sea, bringing with them all-consuming war. To fight the Kaiju, mankind developed giant robots called Jaegers, designed to be piloted by two humans locked together in a neural bridge. However, even the Jaegers are not enough to defeat the Kaiju, and humanity is on the verge of defeat. Mankind's last hope now lies with a washed-up ex-pilot, an untested trainee and an old, obsolete Jaeger. Directed by Guillermo del Toro. Thanks for listening on all platforms! In this episode, Dr. Andrea Stephenson Won and host, Robby Ratan, analyze the film Pacific Rim (SPOILERS!) as it relates to her research in the Virtual Embodiment Lab at Cornell. We discuss the idea of many-to-one avatars (e.g., two-pilot Jaegers,) the psychological effect of proximity perceptions (e.g., does it matter if the pilot is in a mech or not) and the very definition of avatars in consideration of these concepts. She also shares some interesting findings from her research and recommendations for science fiction that help broaden our understanding of these exciting future media technologies. About this week's guest: Andrea Stephenson Won is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at Cornell University. She directs the Virtual Embodiment Lab where they research how mediated experiences change people's perceptions, especially in immersive media. About the SPARTIE Lab:The Social and Psychological Approaches to Research on Technology-Interaction Effects (SPARTIE) Lab performs research on the effects of human-technology interaction, examining how the use of media technologies (e.g., avatars, agents, automobiles) influences meaningful outcomes (e.g., education, health/safety, persuasion). The SPARTIE Lab is part of the greater academic community at the College of Communication Arts & Sciences at Michigan State University. This week we are back to discuss Pacific Rim (2013)

The Force Fed Sci-Fi Movie Podcast

This time, we we look at the 2013 sleeper hit with our Pacific Rim film review, and along the way we ask if the giant Jaegers are actually possible? Does Ron Perlman play the best character in the film? Finally, we examine Pacific Rim's complicated legacy. Let's dive in… Pacific Rim Movie Cast and Crew Written and Directed by Guillermo del Toro: Del Toro came into the project almost by accident as he was pitching a different movie, an adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft story At the Mountain of Madness, but when this didn't materialize, he read the story treatment for Pacific Rim developed by Travis Beacham and immediately signed on to direct the film. Charlie Hunnam as Raleigh Becket: At the time, Hunnam had achieved popularity after starring as the lead character on the FX series Sons of Anarchy. He had previously been considered for a role in a past del Toro film, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Mori: Kikuchi had risen to international fame following her Oscar nominated performance in Babel and has remained a star in Asian cinema in the years since Pacific Rim. Idris Elba as Stacker Pentecost: Elba has had a varied and impressive career over the past 20 years. From roles on shows like The Wire, Luther and The Office as well as films like Thor, The Jungle Book (2016) and Beasts of No Nation. The role of Pentecost was originally offered to Tom Cruise who declined due to conflicts in his shooting schedule. Also Starring: Charlie Day as Dr. Newton Geiszler Ron Perlman as Hannibal Chau Robert Kazinsky as Chuck Hansen Max Martini as Hercules Hansen Clifton Collins, Jr as Tendo Choi The Odd Journey to Pacific Rim The production of Pacific Rim actually began in 2006 when screenwriter Travis Beacham conceived of a film where giant robots battled giant monsters. While basic, the concept evolved over the next several years until he had a 25 page treatment. Then, in 2010, Guillermo del Toro was announced to be directing the aforementioned H.P. Lovecraft film, but this project was ultimately cancelled after del Toro was unwilling to compromise on the film's budget as well as the eventual “R” rating for that film. Following that cancellation, del Toro partnered with Beacham to continue working on the script for the next year. Finally, in 2012, del Toro and his team were able to begin shooting and the schedule was hectic to say the least. Del Toro is notorious for the control he exerts over his productions. He often does not employ a second unit to shoot scenes that do not include principal actors or prominent scenes, but due to a condensed shooting schedule, he had no choice but to utilize a creative scheme to get his movie completed. He decided to use what he called a “splinter unit” that would arrive on set prior to the main schedule that included several actors and crew members and they would work on off days in the production. Del Toro also worked eighteen hours per day as well as encouraged improvisation and looser movements. In addition to the crazy production cycle, the post-production cycle was also tumultuous with a last minute decision to convert the film to 3D which added 9 months to the post-production schedule. When Can We Get a Jaeger? Obviously, the literal big technology on display in Pacific Rim is that of the Jaegers, the gigantic twin piloted robots that have been built to battle the monstrous Kaiju that are emerging from the Pacific Ocean. Is the technology currently available to develop these giant robots? In short, no and there are very compelling reasons why it's not. For starters, the sheer size of the Jaegers. Just because something is bigger, doesn't mean that it's better. The amount of energy needed to move these robots would be staggering and would actually be weaker than say a robot of regular human proportions. In addition, there aren't any materials that are strong enough to create the ultra-tough Jaegers.
