Featuring a heartwarming performance by Molly Ringwald, ALL THESE SMALL MOMENTS tells the story of a teenage boy's infatuation with a woman he sees on the bus that further complicates his already tumultuous adolescence. ALL THESE SMALL MOMENTS is firmly rooted in the bewildering tangle of human relationships. A husband and wife who are trying to find their way back to themselves, because they’ve drifted too far and no longer recognize each other; an adult woman and a teenage boy who somehow fill a void in each other; and an almost accidental friendship that grows to be much more. ALL THESE SMALL MOMENTS is a portrait of adolescence and aims to capture a time period that, if we make it out unscathed, defines us. Director and screenwriter joins us for a conversation on the working with a cast of established actors like Molly Ringwald, Brian D’arcy James and Jemima Kirke and young actors like Brendan Meyer, Harley Quinn Smith and Sam McCarthy. Director and writer Melissa B. Miller Costanzo talks about getting her first feature film off the ground, enlisting actress Molly Ringwald to be a part of her project and channeling her own adolescent experiences into the performances of her talented cast. Kris Gruen writes songs about grownup life infused with a mystic wonder, softening the world’s sharp edges like a glass of exceptionally fine bourbon. Kris grew up steeped in classic records. His Americana influenced new folk is grounded in the tradition of great narrative songwriters like Cat Stevens and Paul Simon and yet Kris’s voice is strikingly current. A New York City native who’s put down roots in Vermont, Kris effortlessly blends sagacious wit and emotional depth. The new album Coast & Refuge is an album both about and created by partnerships where the sonic and thematic threads feel constant, equally at home in the old townships of Vermont where the new folk- artist lives, as it is in the new frontiers of Scandinavia, and the California coastline where much of it was written. The songs retain folk roots, but bring a contemporary urgency and a big sound. The result draws comparisons to Matthew Perryman Jones, Pete Yorn, Elbow, Griffin House and Ryan Adams. Over a four year period Kris worked with LA writer/producers Brad Gordon (Vance Joy, Dan Wilson),Justin Gray (James Bay, John Legend,) and Ramin Sakurai (Supreme Beings of Leisure), Finnish singer-songwriter Peppina, and LA artist AM. During his 2015 European tour supporting Jesse Malin, Kris was led to Stockholm to work with Peter Morén (of Peter Bjorn and John). Gruen also collaborated with filmmaker Melissa Miller- Costanzo on the song “Coming Down Around Me” for her feature film “All These Small Moments” starring Molly Ringwald and Jemima Kirke, which premiered at The Tribeca Film Festival this past April. Longtime producer Charles Newman (The Magnetic Fields, The Bones of J.R. Jones) produced the track in his Brooklyn based Cottage Sounds studio, as well as The Morén duet and the album closer, “2008,” a beautifully nostalgic ballad co-written with Los Angeles based artists Jim and Sam.
Happy Friday folks! "Eighth Grade" hits theaters this weekend and I have Picture Lock contributor Richie Wenzler on to give his thoughts on the film. So in the spirit of middle school awkwardness and judging, I have a great line up of interviews for you on the show. I talk with the hilarious Melissa Miller-Costanzo of “All These Small Moments”. We talk about our love for people to be quiet and leave us alone during movies, but more importantly the well received film. I also talk with producer/director Robin Hauser about her documentary film “Bias”. In the film, she puts her own biases on display to explore the nature of implicit bias. Finally, I speak w/ Erika Cohn, producer/director of “The Judge”. The film explores revolves around the first woman appointed to a Shari'a court in the Middle East, whose career provides rare insights into both Islamic law and gendered justice. Plus I've got your answers to the Picture Lock question of the week two weeks ago after missing last week! The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Actress Vella Lovell. For two seasons of CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, Vella's character Heather has been the fan favorite/standout comic relief alongside Golden Globe Winner Rachel Bloom. When season three returns fans will be in shock when they see Heather, the underachieving roommate of Rebecca (Bloom), change her tune and make big steps in both her professional and personal life. Vella was most recently seen in the summer smash hit THE BIG SICK, where she played Khadija, who Kumail's (Kumail Nanjiani) parents are trying to set him up with. Continuing on the film side of things, Vella will also star alongside Justin Long and Cobie Smothers in the comedy LITERALLY, RIGHT BEFORE AARON. In addition, she will have a supporting role alongside Molly Ringwald, Brian d'Arcy James and Jemima Kirke in the independent film ALL THESE SMALL MOMENTS which is set for release in early 2018. In between shooting, Vella is writing/producing a web series with friends called “Friend Therapy,” which will be coming out later this year through Meetinghouse Productions. She is also part of an all-female sketch group called “Razor Burn” where they release video sketches. Unlike her character on the series, Vella is no underachiever. She is a graduate of both NYU's Tisch School and the Juilliard School for Drama. While at Julliard, she played Anna Mae in Pulitzer Prize Winner Lynn Nottage's “By The Way, Meet Vera Stark.”
