In this week's episode of Visual Intonation, we dive into the world of Christopher Emanuel Smith, a filmmaker whose journey from Florida to the bright lights of New York City is as compelling as the stories he tells. A former Floridian with a knack for avoiding "Florida Man" infamy, Christopher swapped gators for a camera and pursued an MFA from NYU Tisch. With a career that blends screenwriting, directing, and videography, he has earned his place in the industry, crafting visuals that captivate and stories that resonate. His current gig as a Senior Director at Condé Nast Entertainment has only sharpened his unique cinematic voice, a voice that has already captured the attention of major publications like Vanity Fair and GQ.  But Christopher isn't just a director; he's a storyteller at heart. His goal? To create coming-of-age narratives that seamlessly weave together comedy and drama, stories that capture the awkwardness, beauty, and struggle of growing up. From his work on music videos and documentaries to his upcoming episodic series, Christopher's ability to blend humor with heartfelt moments places him in a class of his own. The silent storytelling technique he mastered with a 16mm Bolex camera continues to inform his work today, ensuring that every frame he shoots is packed with meaning.  We also explore Christopher's ideal projects—shows like 'Atlanta' and 'Dave', which mix razor-sharp wit with emotional depth, and action-comedy films like 'Tropic Thunder', where humor and adventure collide. His blend of sharp social commentary and visual storytelling makes him a standout in an industry often overcrowded with cookie-cutter projects. Whether it's through the lens of a camera or the page of a script, Christopher remains steadfast in his mission to tell stories that matter, stories that go beyond the bizarre encounters of a life lived in Florida.  Don't miss this episode of Visual Intonation, where we talk about Christopher's experiences, creative processes, and his exciting future projects. We'll also discuss his latest short film, 'Male Pattern Boredness', which follows a self-sabotaging musician on a hilariously rocky path toward self-discovery. Tune in to hear how one filmmaker is pushing boundaries and creating headlines that don't involve any alligators. Christopher Emanuel Smith's Website: https://www.culturewax.com/Christopher Emanuel Smith's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/c.emanuelsmith/?hl=enChristopher Emanuel Smith's Coverfly: https://writers.coverfly.com/profile/writer-541ab3bff-195734Support the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

It is the longest continuously running film festival in New York City, dedicated to showcasing the advanced work of NYU graduate and undergraduate film students."His award-winning film, PUNTER, is phenomenal but so is his own story -- growing up in South Africa and betting on himself by applying to NYU Tisch. The bet paid off, with his films being shown in as diverse locations as SNY and now taking home the top prize at his school's film festival.PUNTER is a great film for several reasons: he establishes his characters within two minutes, the place of South Africa soon after, and the story is free from the stereotypical portrayals that we are all so used to seeing. In this conversation, we talk about Jason's journey; what it's like to win at the First Run Film Festival; how best to describe South African cinema; the ruthlessness required to create a wonderful short film; the role of stereotypes in film; casting kids in film -- and getting the absolute best performance out of them; what the process of shooting in South Africa was like; the role of short films in independent film; and what's next. And we both agree -- chess is a sport. In this episode, Adam and Budi kick of the first book club episode of the year with The Dutchman, by Amiri Baraka. We welcome Taylor Barfield to the discussion, as he joins Budi and Adam in dissecting this classic. Poet, writer, teacher, and political activist Amiri Baraka was born Everett LeRoi Jones in 1934 in Newark, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University and Howard University, spent three years in the U.S. Air Force, and returned to New York City to attend Columbia University and the New School for Social Research. Baraka was well known for his strident social criticism, often writing in an incendiary style that made it difficult for some audiences and critics to respond with objectivity to his works. Throughout most of his career his method in poetry, drama, fiction, and essays was confrontational, calculated to shock and awaken audiences to the political concerns of black Americans. For decades, Baraka was one of the most prominent voices in the world of American literature.Baraka's legacy as a major poet of the second half of the 20th century remains matched by his importance as a cultural and political leader. His influence on younger writers has been significant and widespread, and as a leader of the Black Arts movement of the 1960s Baraka did much to define and support black literature's mission into the next century. His experimental fiction of the 1960s is considered some of the most significant African-American fiction since that of Jean Toomer.________________________________________________________________________________________________Taylor Barfield is a dramaturg, writer, and theater artist from Baltimore, MD. He served as the Acting Literary Manager at Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven, CT and the Literary Manager at Two River Theater in Red Bank, NJ. Taylor currently works as a freelance dramaturg and consultant working with organizations such as the Guthrie, BMG, Portland Center Stage, the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, and Yale Repertory Theatre. Taylor received his B.A. in Molecular/Cellular Biology and English Literature from Johns Hopkins University and is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, where he earned his M.F.A. and D.F.A. in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism. His scholarly work explores how contemporary Black American playwrights re-imagine and re-stage Black theater history. CARELESSLY THERE, 13min., USA, Drama Directed by Rachel Deutsch As Elaine grapples with romantic feelings for her best friend May, she begins to confront her own identity, and the lies she's told to protect it. http://www.racheldeutsch.com/ https://www.instagram.com/racheldeutschh/ Get to know the filmmaker: This is a film that was written by my best friend Isabelle Fenn Miller. I wanted to make this film because I wanted to challenge myself and take on a project as a director. Thus far I have directed my own work. My first film, Until I Met You, I had written, starred in, and directed. Which is a lot. I was excited to take a step back and focus on directing! This piece was originally an essay Isabelle Fenn Miller wrote in college. We both went to acting school together at NYU Tisch and took a class called “devised work” where we were encouraged to write about anything. I knew I wanted to direct her writing because I could still remember specific lines I saw as images in my head many years later. I never had forgotten the piece. I believed in her work so much. We both took a chance by trusting each other to make it. I couldn't have been happier when working with Isabelle. I felt fully trusted by her to bring my own vision to the writing as a director. It helped that we were already close as friends. Our friendship fostered an environment where we were able to really listen to each other when it came to making hard decisions. Beyond our working relationship, a theme in my work (and life) so far is creating art about romantic female friendship. I found the character of Elaine challenging. (Which is what I liked about her.) It was challenging to create a character who doesn't DO anything, but just allow life to happen to her. If I'm being honest with myself, I feel like this often. I also feel that most of the time we think we are in control of our life when we are not at all. I was excited about exploring all these ideas when it came to making this film! With leagues of experience operating across the Detroit and NYC scenes, Rimarkable is known for her unwavering knowledge of where electronic music comes from and where it is going.  As a first generation Puerto Rican, the Afro-Latin sound continues to have a huge impact on her sonic leanings, alongside the unmistakable ear training of the city's techno legacy. Growing up heavily influenced by Black gospel music, her selections as a DJ, producer and broadcaster bring together a wider understanding of funk, jazz, rock, gospel and soul that is unlike any other in the biz...   Rimarkable started professionally DJing in 1997, first doing private events and then clubs in the early 2000s. She started producing in 2006, after she grew tired of male producers either not understanding how she wanted to sound, or luring her into the studio to hang out, then asking her to freestyle on the mic, while hitting ‘record' and releasing music without her consent. A multi-hyphenate musician who has found various creative outlets over the years, Rimarkable believes in DJing and producing as a spiritual practice, exploring alchemy through the DJ art form as well as African spiritualism, healing, mental health and self- care. It's a philosophy that eventually manifested as a lecture and classroom series called ‘The Alchemy of DJing', a means for her to creatively engage in social justice, and empower women and youth. It's taken her to various cities such as Nairobi and Berlin, and US institutions such as Yale and Queens Museum, and now has landed her as an Adjunct Professor at NYU-Tisch in the Clive Davis Institute, where she teaches the younger minds this sacred art of alchemy of the DJ. Quite literally a party starter, she's produced an abundance of successful, long-running nightlife events in NYC, SF Bay Area, Detroit, and beyond over the past 20 years. Rimarkable has been signed to UK house music institution Defected since 2021 including the Defected Music publishing arm, and stepped up as a presenter for the weekly Defected Radio show. 2023 is Rimarkable's year for new releases but 2022 did not go a miss, as she hopped in the Studio with Honey Dijon to write and perform for Honey's latest album ‘Black Girl Magic'. Recorded on April 28, 2023 in Long Island City, Queens NY. Hosted & produced by Mari Ella. And she discusses the many educational paths she took to land some of her dream gigs, including Wicked on Broadway and her current work as a web engineer at Spotify. Carla Stickler is perhaps best known for her news-making return to the role of Elphaba in Wicked in 2022, after a 7-year hiatus away from the show. That return single-handedly, helped keep Wicked open in a Covid-weary industry. Her story and advocacy ideas about Artists in STEM have been featured in Marie Claire, NPR, Huffington Post, Vulture, Inside Editon, Nightline - among others. As an actor, Carla toured the nation with Mamma Mia (covering Sophie) and toured Asia playing Liesel in the The Sound of Music. She has also performed her own cabaret as a guest entertainer onboard Norwegian and Disney Cruise Lines. Carla has a BFA in acting from NYU-Tisch and masters degree in theater education from NYU-Steinhardt, and she was a voice teacher in New York City on the faculties of Marymount Manhattan College and Molloy College/CAP21. And she also attended The Flatiron School in New York City, a software engineering bootcamp, that helped her as she career transitioned from the entertainment industry to the tech sector.  Carla mentors high school students through their college application journey through iMentor in Chicago as well as artists looking to make a career change into tech through Artists Who Code. Today on Crushing Classical, you'll hear my interview with Ariel Grossman, Founder & Artistic Director of Ariel Rivka Dance. I've never talked with a choreographer before and I just loved finding all of the parallels between our worlds.  This episode is brought to you today by Happiest Musician Coaching. You are amazing, and I believe in you. What are you trying to create?  What do you need your career to be and do for you? What are you not seeing that you need to do and work on?  I love these conversations and supporting musicians like you. For a limited time, I'm offering a free 30-minute call to get you some clarity around your next steps, and see how I might help you get unstuck!  Ariel Rebecca (Rivka) Grossman is a native New Yorker, who trained at LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts and Joffrey Ballet School. In 2008, she founded an all-female contemporary company, Ariel Rivka Dance. Most recently, Ariel received a 2023 Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Ariel's work has been presented worldwide, including BAM Fisher, NJPAC, Bryant Park, NYLA, Baruch Performing Arts Center, Martha Graham Studio Theater, NYU Tisch, Rutgers University, Roxbury Performing Arts Center, and in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Houston, Cleveland, Florida, Oklahoma, Detroit, Memphis, Istanbul, Turkey, and in 2023, Perigord, France and Bari, Italy. She has been commissioned by Dance Lab NY, Konverjdans, Ballet Vero Beach, and Skidmore College. Collaborations include Rioult Dance NY, Taylor 2, Heidi Latsky, Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, and Sean Curran. Ariel is a past recipient of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (New) Moves Fellowship, Monira Performance Residency, and a Nimbus Arts Center artist residency. ARD is an awardee of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Nathan Cummings Foundation, The Charles & Joan Gross Family Foundation, the O'Donnell-Green Music & Dance Foundation, Jersey City Council of the Arts, and New Jersey State Council on the Arts and more. Ariel draws inspiration from the struggles and joys of the human experience, particularly through being a woman and mother of two. Through collaboration, Ariel encourages her artists to bring themselves to the work—molding pieces that are striking, evocative, and multi-layered. This conversation was fascinating. Firstly, because I loved hearing Ariel talk about her art in a way that was both brand new to me and also completely relatable. The connections are so clear and it's amazing to think about movement, interpretation, and leadership in a totally different field than my own.  Secondly, because I loved hearing her take real ownership of her own strengths - I don't hear this nearly often enough from people, even the amazingly accomplished people I'm interviewing right here, and ESPECIALLY from working musicians.  I know you will love this interview. If you are in NYC, catch Ariel Rivka Dance's 15th Annual Season presented by NYU Tisch at the Jack Crystal Theater on May 31st-June 2nd, and a special family matinee co-presented by 14Y Theater on June 3rd.  Here's a teaser for her upcoming collaboration, Never Fade Away Follow Ariel Rivka Dance on Instagram at @arielrivkadance or @arielgrossman; or on Facebook Thanks for joining me on Crushing Classical!  Theme music and audio editing by DreamVance. We're delighted to welcome Cate Osborn, Andrew Nome, and Sharang Biswas to discuss worldbuilding for and in games. (We usually overload your TBRs, but our guests are guaranteed to overload your To-Be-Played list.) In this conversation, we talk a lot about how the communal nature of ttrpgs creates a very different worldbuilding process than a writer creating a world more or less in isolation. The great joy of gaming is in the collaboration of the storytelling! We also examine how the worldbuilding can both inform and be informed by the gaming mechanics. Stephanie Hsu is a newly minted Oscar nominee—one of 11 historic nods for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” the madcap multiverse epic with a primarily AAPI cast. But for the NYU Tisch graduate, this recognition from the Academy is far more than a personal milestone. “Ever since I was coming up in New York, I was taught that anytime you have a voice, you have to use it for good,” she says. “That doesn't mean the art has to be wholesome. But you have to really know why the story is being told. Especially because I was often one of so few people who looked like me who got in through the door, I always felt like every opportunity was an opportunity to bring ten other people alongside me… I will continue, always, to carry the responsibility and the beautiful chance to bring other people into the fold.
