Host Jo Reed talks with contributor Leslie Fine about three audiobooks that range from memoir to thriller to literary biography. They begin with Unread: A Memoir of Learning (and Loving) To Read on TikTok by Oliver James, where narrator James Shippy brings warmth and enthusiasm to the author's account of achieving literacy as an adult and discovering the enduring pleasures of books. Then, they turn to Tiffany Crum's This Story Might Save Your Life. Driven by the energetic, emotionally layered narration of Julia Whelan and Sean Patrick Hopkins, its use of podcast clips, voicemail messages, and layered audio production heightens a suspenseful missing-person mystery. And they end with Judy Blume: A Life by Mark Oppenheimer; Molly Ringwald's warm, quietly authoritative narration guides listeners through the career of an author whose books have shaped generations of readers. Together, these audiobooks prove that the right narrator can turn a good story into an irresistible listen. Audiobooks Discussed: Unread: A Memoir of Learning (and Loving) To Read on TikTok by Oliver James, read by James Shippy (Hachette Audio) This Story Might Save Your Life by Tiffany Crum, read by Julia Whelan and Sean Patrick Hopkins (Macmillan Audio) Judy Blume: A Life by Mark Oppenheimer, read by Molly Ringwald and Mark Oppenheimer (Penguin Random House Audio) Support for Behind the Mic comes from HarperCollins Focus, and HarperCollins Christian Publishing, publishers of some of your favorite audiobooks and authors, including Reba McEntire, Bob Goff, Savannah Guthrie, Max Lucado, Lysa TerKeurst, and more. Megan Gaul is a weight loss coach from Staten Island. Her mission is to support women age 30 and up, 200 lbs. and up, achieve their weight-loss goals without shrinking their lives. She came to this mission through her own 100-lb weight loss in 2018, where she discovered food freedom, healthier emotional boundaries, self-trust, and a richer life. She's now in her 5th year of business, and she and her clients focus on small habit-change, self-compassion, and authenticity. Megan Gaul Vroom Vroom Veer Show Summary Intro and welcome — Jeff introduces Megan and they ease into the conversation with some Staten Island background and shared pop culture references (John Hughes, Molly Ringwald). Megan's new Slack community — a supportive space for women working on weight loss who aren't ready for one-on-one coaching. Members post daily food plans, check in at night, swap meal-prep ideas, and join a weekly group coaching class. Megan shares why she loves using Slack for something this personal. Growing up in Staten Island — feeling like an outsider among Italian families, being a band/nerd kid rather than a club kid, and how her home food environment (three square meals, limited snacking) quietly shaped her relationship with food for years to come. The "freshman forty-five" — unlimited cafeteria access, vending machines, and a photo she almost didn't recognize. Megan shares how that moment pushed her to start tracking calories, eventually losing about 40 lbs (185 → 145) — but without a maintenance plan. The scarcity mindset and night overeating — when you grow up feeling like food access is controlled, freely available food becomes hard to resist. Megan traces this pattern through college, working life, and reaching 235 lbs by age 28. The wake-up moment — post-eating guilt, feeling out of control, and recognizing that food had become a numbing mechanism. Megan talks honestly about the parallels with addictive behavior, without labeling it as addiction. You don't have to give up Cheetos — Megan's coaching philosophy centers on portioning, structure, and meal planning rather than banning favorite foods. Peanut butter, Reese's, and all. Jeff shares his own parallel experience with military weigh-ins, strict low-calorie phases, and eventually finding green smoothies. Small habits that actually stick — Jeff's practical toolkit: "optic flow" walks, the 100-steps minimum, 10 minutes of morning sunlight for circadian rhythm, brief morning meditation to lower cortisol, and ramping into the day rather than diving into email. Megan affirms why consistency beats all-or-nothing every time. Life opens up before you hit goal weight — more stamina, saying yes to hiking and standing events, not shrinking your world to avoid discomfort. Megan shares her Sunday bean salad ritual and how weekly meal prep keeps stress from driving impulsive eating choices. Wrap-up, laughs, and a John Candy documentary recommendation. Megan shares how to find her and what she offers. Connections Partake Meal Planning

Brat Pack luminary Molly Ringwald made a string of thrillers in the mid to late 90's, playing the villain, the victim, and some lady who works in an office. Was she able to replicate her teen idol success of the 80's? The answer may or may not surprise you! MALICIOUS (1995, Ian Corson) OFFICE KILLER (1997, Cindy Sherman) REQUIEM FOR MURDER (1999, Douglas Jackson)
She wrote laugh-out-loud funny books about the hardest parts of life : infertility, friendships, the seasons that don't go according to plan. Then she wrote horror screenplays for Creepshow, including episodes starring Joey King and Molly Ringwald. Then she shambled around as a zombie on The Walking Dead. Then she wrote a young adult horror novel about a girl whose greatest fear turns out to be completely real.On paper, none of that belongs together. In this conversation, it all makes perfect sense. In this episode we get into the pivot from nonfiction to fiction and what finally made her make it, what surviving cancer changed about what she was willing to write and how honestly she was willing to write it, why she thinks humor and horror are actually doing the same emotional work, how she wrote a character whose OCD makes danger feel real before the real danger arrives, and what it means to finally tell the story you've been circling for years. This one is for anyone who has ever felt like their interests are too different to belong together. They do. You just haven't found the through line yet.

“You said you couldn't believe in someone who didn't believe in you.” Join Ian, Liam & Megs for our 319th episode as we dive headfirst into lace gloves, record store shifts, and 1980s romantic angst with John Hughes' Pretty in Pink (1986). It's class divides, prom politics, and the eternal question of who really deserves Andie Walsh. This week we discuss: Molly Ringwald as Andie — resilience, insecurity, and whether she's a fully realised protagonist or a Hughes archetype dressed in vintage. Blane's behaviour — romantic lead or emotional liability? Does the film let him off too easily? Duckie's devotion — lovable underdog, manipulative “nice guy,” or something more complicated? The class tension at the heart of the story — is the film actually saying something about wealth and identity, or just dressing teen drama up as social commentary? Megs unpacks the fashion — iconic, chaotic, deeply 80s. Does the final dress deserve its reputation? Ian explores the alternate ending — what changed, why test audiences intervened, and whether the original choice would have made for a stronger film. Liam questions the soundtrack supremacy — is this peak 80s needle-drop culture, or nostalgia doing heavy lifting? The father-daughter dynamic — quiet emotional centre or underdeveloped subplot? Are certain viewers predispositioned to be on board with this - or not? The prom climax — catharsis, compromise, or cultural time capsule? We debate whether the film romanticises inequality — and whether Andie's final choice feels empowering or regressive. And finally, whether Pretty in Pink is the Best Film Ever — or simply one of the most enduring teen romances of the 1980s. Join Lionel for an unapologetic deep dive into the legal and cultural absurdities of the modern world. Lionel dismantles the concept of hate crimes, arguing that the justice system should punish intent and action, not thoughts and motivations. He explains why adding "hate" to a charge violates due process and turns prosecutors into mind readers. The conversation shifts to a blistering critique of fading celebrities like Molly Ringwald and Marjorie Taylor Greene desperately clinging to relevance, alongside a look at the bizarre world of bad plastic surgery. The Breakfast Club (1985) was chosen by Patreon supporter Lucky LouLou Green, and it stands as one of the defining films of 1980s American cinema. Written, produced, and directed by John Hughes, the movie was made during an incredibly prolific period for the filmmaker, as he reshaped teen movies with a more honest, character-driven approach. Shot on a modest budget of around $1 million, the film was produced quickly, with Hughes deliberately stripping away flashy set pieces to focus on dialogue, performance, and atmosphere. Principal photography took place at Maine North High School in Des Plaines, Illinois — a real, unused school that Hughes would return to multiple times throughout his career. The production schedule was famously short — just 28 days — and Hughes encouraged collaboration, allowing the young cast to contribute ideas and personal experiences to their roles. Several moments of dialogue were improvised or rewritten on set, helping give the film its natural, conversational feel that set it apart from other teen movies of the era. Composer Keith Forsey provided the now-iconic soundtrack, perfectly capturing the mood of mid-80s youth culture. Upon release, The Breakfast Club became both a commercial and cultural success, cementing Hughes' reputation and turning its cast into defining faces of a generation. Today, the film is widely regarded as a landmark of 1980s filmmaking — proof that a small budget, a single location, and strong creative confidence can produce something timeless.

Tread Perilously's month of backdoor pilots turns the spotlight on, arguably, the most successful backdoor pilot ever made: an episode of Diff'rent Strokes called "The Girls School." When the dorm mother at Eastlake quits over an argument with the headmaster, Mrs. Garrett volunteers to help Kimberly make costumes for the upcoming play. Once at the school, Mrs. Garrett meets some of Kimberly's classmates who live at the dorm, including Blair Warner, Dorothy "Tootie" Ramsey, Nancy Olson, and Molly Parker. If this sounds like an episode of The Facts of Life, that's because it is. The first episode, to be precise, even if it's not quite right. Paul Pakler joins Erik and Justin for another Facts of Life discussion. The trio marvel at the choice to spin Mrs. Garrett off after just 20 episodes of Diff'rent Strokes. Justin and Paul also break down just how uncomfortable the premise of Diff'rent Strokes really is ... and that's before Erik reiterates that they will never talk about that one two-parter. The off-screen dramas are also discussed and the "pleasant chuckle" theory of sitcom writing is once again on display. The third Fanning sister is revealed. The absence of Natalie Green is quite noticeable. Erik points out the most labored "men can't cook" joke. Paul notices Arnold and Willis still go to public school, Justin argues the Blair in this episode is not the real Blair Warner, and Molly Ringwald's character gets re-examined through a 2025 lens. Also, the truth about Our Town is revealed.
“That dude is Dracula, man…” The entire month of October is Halloween. And you can't do October without TYPE-O-NEGATIVE, as they are the official soundtrack to the month of Halloween. Released August 20, 1996, OCTOBER RUST, their 4th studio album (or 3rd if you count “Origin of the Feces” as a “live” album, which we actually do, even though it's technically not) is much more gothy, textured, and atmospheric than previous TYPE-O albums while still maintaining the same gothic, heavy, doom laden aesthetic of their previous albums, making it the perfect sonic representation of all things Halloween: vampires, werewolves, haunted houses, haunted relationships, hot bisexual goth girls who are into threesomes, bottles of red wine, and lonely forests bathed in the colorful, seasonal transformation that is autumn. It's time to imagine Molly Ringwald dressed as a goth girl for Halloween as you feast your ears on the creepiest, evilest sounding keyboards in metal while summoning Bacchus (the god of wine and revelry and/or tits) to help prepare for this season's “fistivities”. Discover the actual definition of “zoanthropic paranoia”, find out what happens when you make a goth girl squirt, and learn about Peter Steele's lesser known “nickname” when you JOIN US as we rrrrrrroll our R's rrrrrrright on through creepy season with OCTOBER RUST. What'sa happenin' hot stuff? Bob, Brad, Carla and Mark are back to discuss one of our favorite movies, John Hughes' first feature film, Sixteen Candles. This movie did not have an official soundtrack, but the songs featured in it are a killer combination of new wave, post punk and rock 'n' roll. Molly Ringwald is her own fairy godmother, a Cinderella stuck in a love triangle between her best friend and a wealthy classmate, in this teen dramady from John Hughes. Did we like it? More than we thought, but not without some reservations. But hey, it has a killer soundtrack, a very sleazy James Spader, and Annie Potts in a beehive wig. Starring Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, Andrew McCarthy, Annie Potts, Harry Dean Stanton, and James Spader. Written by John Hughes. Directed by Howard Deutch.
Mama mia, 300 episodes! Insane to have been doing this for 11 years and 300+ episodes. Thank you all for listening! We had to do a BIG one for this, and what better re-visit than John Hughes' coming-of-age classic? This is a movie with some *electric* performances, but oof-a-doof some rough moments. These movies didn't just entertain, they helped define Generation X adolescence. Why did these films resonate so much? Because the '80s were overflowing with disposable teen cash, hungry studios, and an army of rising stars like Michael J. Fox, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, John Cusack, and more. They gave us escapism, identity, and some truly quotable lines. Did one of these movies speak to you? Did you own the soundtrack? Turns out he was only half-right.The original ending of Pretty in Pink has Molly Ringwald's Andie politely shutting down Andrew McCarthy's Blane, and dancing in solidarity with Cryer's Duckie (to Davie Bowie's Heroes) -- but test audiences HATED it! So, the ending was changed making sure that Andie ended up with cute and sensitive, rich-boy, Blane.GETTING MOSHED: While filming Dudes, Penelope Spheeris had Jon and castmate Dan Roebuck thrown into the mosh pit at a Vandals concert -- and they barely lived to tell about it!So, join Susan and Sharon -- and Jon -- as they talk Morgan Freeman, Escape From Alcatraz, Richard Gere, Wonder Woman, Al Pacino, Cher, Annie Potts, Mark Hamill, The Bad News Bears -- and getting naked for laughs on Two And A Half Men!AUDIO-OGRAPHYListen to Suzanne Rico's podcast The Man Who Calculated Death (produced by Jon Cryer and Lisa Joyner) at TheManWhoCalculatedDeath.comAnd Jon's other podcast, Lawyers, Gun & Money at Apple. Send us a textKatie and Bridget make their own prom dresses as they re-watch the 80's classic: Pretty in Pink! Come along as we meet Andie, a teenage girl who's POOR. DON'T FORGET IT! She's got style, she's got a job, she's got full time mother responsibilities to her out of work father, and she's got her own personal stalker! Aka her "friend" Duckie! When Andie gets asked out by Blane, one of the "richies" from her school, they have the worst first date ever and after they make out she says she loves him! Also he immediately invites her to prom! Wtf! But this movie asks the deep questions we all have wondered at some point in our lives, such as: Can a poor girl date a rich dude? Should we call the police and/or the guidance counselor about Duckie and the fact that he's been held back for the last couple of years? Is prom the most important event in a young girls life or is dumping all the loser men around you and going to fashion school the most important instead!? Released in 1986, it was written by John Hughes and stars Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, Harry Dean Stanton, Annie Potts, Andrew McCarthy, and James Spader.
The 1980s was not only a time of genre excellence, but also one of romantic comedies about surly tone-deaf white men and their indefatigable struggle to remain that way. To this semi golden age of toxic masculinity, we consign “Paul Mazursky's Tempest,” in which an otherwise sensitive and big-hearted filmmaker somehow marshals the talents of John Cassavetes, Gena Rowlands, Susan Sarandon, Raul Julia, and (in her big screen debut) Molly Ringwald, to deliver some of the least likable characters in screen history. And it's (vaguely) based on Shakespeare's “The Tempest”, which only leaves Paul, Javi, and - indubitably - Producer Brad filling the much needed void with some of the finest comedy commentary of their careers!Follow us!InstagramBlueskyemail: Multiplexoverthruster@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. What a CreepSome of the Creepiest Plots to John Hughes FilmsSeason 28, Episode 1John Hughes accomplished the remarkable feat of being a quintessential Baby Boomer while still resonating with Generation X and Millennials through his films. Movies—such as 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pretty in Pink, and She's Having a Baby—became essential viewing for generations that felt overlooked by mainstream media. He genuinely seemed like “one of us.”However, when we examine his work through a modern lens, it is difficult to overlook an alarming pattern of racism, homophobia, white privilege, and sexism, as well as some questionable behavior exhibited by the male leads in his films from the 1980s and 1990s. Some of his movies also reveal a rather creepy element when viewed today.Sources for this episode:New Yorker essay by Molly Ringwald, 2018CrackedThe Franklin PostSplice TodayFar Out MagazineThe Daily BeastLooperHollywood ElsewhereRankerVanity FairYouTube Shrink Tank Literate ApeElle AustraliaScreen Rant MediumBustle Trigger warning: Sexual Assault, Grooming, Sexism, Racism, Ableism, and HomophobiaFor our non-creep, check out https://save-la.org/ for ways to help or be helped in the Los Angeles area. There was a time when Molly Ringwald knew she had to get out of America for a while so she didn't have to be That Girl anymore. Now, with a career that includes being a jazz singer, a novelist, and a translator of French literature, Molly is much more than That Girl. Molly and Marc talk about her early days on The Facts of Life, her global stardom in the John Hughes movies, and her current day projects, including the recent season of Feud: Capote vs The Swans.
