In this episode of Dance Talk, host Joanne Carey interviews Isabella Lafreniere, a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. Isabella LaFreniere was born in Lambertville, Michigan, and began her dance training at the age of seven at the Northeast Academy of Dance under Giuseppe Canale and Scott Heinrich. At 11, she began studying with Anna Reznik and Alexei Kremnev, first at the Southold Dance Theatre in South Bend, Indiana, and then at the Joffrey Academy of Dance in Chicago, Illinois. She began studying at the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, during the 2008 summer course, and enrolled as a full-time student during the 2010 winter term. She received additional training at the Chautauqua Institution and Pacific Northwest Ballet summer programs. Ms. LaFreniere became an apprentice with NYCB in August 2013 and joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in June 2014. Hello Everyone, I am so excited for you all to listen to this really pleasant conversation I had with Tiler Peck. The world renowned, incredibly dynamic, musical and versatile dancer of today. People have said about her "I don't even have to hear the music to be able to know what it sounds like when I watch you dance." Tiler Peck started dancing at her mother's studio at the age of two and was introduced to various dance styles. She worked with former Bolshoi principal dancer Alla Khaniashvili and former New York City Ballet dancers Patricia Neary and Yvonne Munsey. Peck's journey led her to the School of American Ballet (SAB) and eventually to New York City Ballet. She had to navigate the transition from jazz to ballet and overcome feelings of comparison and insecurity. P eck's musicality is a defining characteristic of her dancing, and she describes it as being an extension of the music. She believes in breaking the rules and being fearless on stage. In this conversation, Tiler Peck discusses the importance of musicality in ballet and how it can be taught. Can it be taught to the degree Tiler is gifted? She emphasizes the need for dancers to listen to the music and become comfortable with it, allowing it to guide their movements. Tiler also shares her experience as a perfectionist and how it has both helped and hindered her progress. She highlights the importance of finding a balance between striving for perfection and letting go to fully express oneself. “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and special guest, Lauren Lovette, Resident Choreographer for Paul Taylor Dance Company In this episode of  “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey,  join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest, Lauren Lovette. Joanne sat in on a rehearsal of a new piece for all male dancers that Lauren created for The Paul Taylor Dance Company prior to this episode.  Here they not only talk about this new piece, but Lauren's career as a ballerina and the transition Lauren made into the modern/contemporary dance world as well as her current position as resident choreographer.  During their conversation, you will also hear that they share the belief that dance belongs to everyone. Lauren Lovette  personifies the intertwining of dance and choreography, moving seamlessly from one to the other. Her work has been commissioned and performed by leading dance companies and festivals, including the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Vail International Dance Festival, American Ballet Theatre Studio Company, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Nevada Ballet Theatre, as well as a self-produced evening entirely of her own work in which she also danced, Why It Matters.She began creating dance as a ballet student, for a 2007 choreographic workshop showing at the School of American Ballet (SAB). Another ballet, for the 2008 workshop, was soon followed by her being selected to create a work for the 2009 New York Choreographic Institute.In 2016, Lovette, then a relatively new principal dancer, was asked to choreograph her first piece, that then premiered at the New York City Ballet Fall Fashion Gala. In 2017, she choreographed for the Vail International Dance Festival, the NYCB Fall Season Gala, and the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company. She was awarded the Virginia B. Toulmin Fellowship at the Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University in fall of 2018, and a year later created a work for the 2019 Fall Fashion Gala at NYCB. Her work at NYCB is noteworthy, forging a path for other female choreographers in an area of dance that has notably been predominantly male.Born in Thousand Oaks, CA, Lovette began studying ballet at the age of 11 at the Cary Ballet Conservatory in Cary, NC. She enrolled at SAB as a full-time student in 2006. In October 2009, Ms. Lovette became an apprentice with NYCB and joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in September 2010. Promoted to soloist in February 2013 and to principal dancer in June 2015, she stepped down from her position at the company in 2021 to embark on a career devoted to dance and choreography in more equal measure. Ms. Lovette received the Clive Barnes Award for dance in December 2012 and was the 2012-2013 recipient of the Janice Levin Award. Tiler Peck was born in Bakersfield, California. She began her dance training at the age of seven, studying privately with former Bolshoi Ballet Principal Dancer Alla Khaniashvili in Hollywood. At the age of 11 she began studying at Conjunctive Point in Culver City, California, with former New York City Ballet dancers Colleen and Patricia Neary. During this time she also studied with former NYCB Principal Yvonne Mounsey at Westside School of Ballet in Santa Monica. At the age of 12, Ms. Peck entered the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet, for most of the 2000-2001 Winter Term. She returned to SAB during the summers of 2002 and 2003, and that fall began as a full time student. In September 2004, Ms. Peck became an apprentice with New York City Ballet. In February 2005 she joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet and was promoted to soloist in December 2006 and principal dancer in October 2009. Robert Fairchild was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and began his dance training at Dance Concepts at the age of four with Rebecca Bateman and Kaelynne Oliphant. His formal ballet training began at the age of ten at the Ballet West Conservatory with Sharee Lane. Other various teachers include: Laura King, Trey Barber, Brooke Healy, and Jaqueline and Heather College of Utah Regional Ballet.   Mr. Fairchild attended the 2002 and 2003 summer courses at the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, and enrolled as a full time student in the fall of 2003. In June 2005, Mr. Fairchild became an apprentice with NYCB, and the following June, he joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet. He was promoted to soloist in May 2007, and in October 2009 was promoted to principal dancer.

Isabella is a graduating high school senior who is also dancing professionally as an apprentice with NYCB a prestigious honor provided to few.  Isabella grew up living in many states but wound up for many years living in Illinois in a suburb outside of Chicago.  She would travel 1 1/2 hours each way into the city to train at the Joffrey Ballet.  When Isabella was entering into her 9th grade year she auditioned for the School of American Ballet (SAB) winter term and was accepted.  SAB which is the official training academy of the New York City Ballet. After the SAB Workshop performances in her 11th grade year, Isabella was asked to be an Apprentice.  During her senior year of high school Isabella has been juggling a full load of school and dancing professionally with the NYCB company.  Today we learn more about what it is like to be an apprentice in one of the top companies in the world. Nearly all of the current members of New York City Ballet received training at the School of American Ballet and entered the Company through the Apprentice Program, which is jointly administered by NYCB and SAB. Only students enrolled at the School are eligible for apprenticeships. NYCB does not hold auditions. Each year, NYCB Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins invites a small number of advanced students, usually ranging in age from 16 to 18, to become apprentices, providing the first stage of their professional careers. Apprentices take class and rehearse with the Company six days a week at NYCB’s Lincoln Center facilities.     

Claire Kretzschmar is a member of New York City Ballet's corps de ballet. Claire began her dance training at the Academy of Dance Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She later studied at the Wake Forest Community Ballet and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Ms. Kretzschmar began studying at the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, during the summers of 2006 through 2009, and enrolled as a full time student in 2009. In November 2010 she became an apprentice with NYCB and joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in August 2011. Since joining NYCB Claire has danced featured roles in George Balanchine's Nutcracker as well as originated featured roles in Peter Martins: Mes Oiseaux and Justin Peck: Paz de la Jolla.

Megan Fairchild is a principal dancer with New York City Ballet. She seemingly catapulted through the ranks into the role of Principal with one of the most prestigious companies in the world in just a few short years. Despite her star appeal, Megan is humble and appreciative of her life and those who have helped her along the way. She began her dance training at the age of four, and then studied ballet at the Ballet West Conservatory in Salt Lake City. While at the Ballet West Conservatory, Ms. Fairchild was also a Ballet West trainee. At the age of 16, Ms. Fairchild moved to NYC to study at the School of American Ballet (SAB) in the fall of 2000. Her rise to principal dancer has been notably fast. She became an apprentice with New York City Ballet in November of 2001. In October 2002, she joined the NYCB company as a member of the corps de ballet. Two years later, Ms. Fairchild was promoted to the rank of soloist in February 2004, and in January 2005, at the age of 20 she was promoted to principal dancer. Megan thoughtfully shares her story with us, openly and honestly. We learn of her triumphs along her journey, from the studio to the stage and her recent marriage. She also shares with us her very real and challenging moments as a dancer.
