The first day of the 2026 NCAA Championships delivered in many ways, the biggest of which came in the form of Ja'Kobe Tharp's 110mH world record. The Auburn junior navigated the barrier in 12.75 seconds, breaking Aries Merritt's 14-year-old mark of 12.80. Tharp's record led the charge for an incredible day for the Tigers, which also featured three qualifiers in the 100m and a 4x100m collegiate record. In the evening's only track final, New Mexico's Habtom Samuel reclaimed the 10,000m title, winning a race reminiscent of a fartlek in 27:51.31. In other prelim action, distance favorites like Simeon Birnbaum, Gary Martin, Colin Sahlman, and the Arkansas 800m duo of Tyrice Taylor and Rivaldo Marshall all easily qualified for Friday's finals.Five more titles were handed out in the field, with Angelos Mantzouranis (Hammer), Dyson Wicker (Pole vault), Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi (Javelin), Tafadzwa Chikomba (Long jump), and Ben Smith (Shot put) all earning top podium spots.____________Host: Paul Hof-Mahoney | @phofmahoneyProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr

The Psychology of Social SecurityThe conventional wisdom says almost always delay Social Security until 70. New research says that advice is wrong for more people than you'd think — and the reason it's wrong isn't purely math. It's psychology. In this episode, David covers the 90-year history of Social Security, how it fits into a real retirement income plan, the four most overlooked risks of delay, and what the 2025 Trustees Report actually says about the program's solvency — including the number most people get completely wrong. What We CoverA brief history — From the Great Depression to the 1983 near-collapse, and Ida May Fuller's legendary $24.75 investmentThe retirement income pyramid — Where Social Security belongs in your plan, and what it was never designed to doFour hidden risks of delay — Mortality, sequence of returns, regret, and health span — risks that almost never show up in the standard researchThe solvency picture — 2025 Trustees Report data, depletion dates, and what "81 cents on the dollar" actually means (hint: it's not zero)Your personal discount rate — The framework for finding the right claiming age for your specific situationThe Four Risks of Delay Nobody Talks About1. Mortality RiskA terminally ill 72-year-old takes no comfort in knowing their mortality-adjusted benefits went up. The standard research averages across everyone who lives and everyone who dies. That works for actuarial tables. It doesn't work for advising one individual human being about their own life.2. Sequence of Returns RiskIf you retire at 62 and delay Social Security until 70, you're spending down your portfolio for eight years before the checks start. Run that scenario through the 2008 financial crisis: same spending, same portfolio — but $578,000 left at claim-at-62 vs. $171,000 at claim-at-70. Same spending. Vastly different cushion.3. Regret RiskRisk = Hazard + Outrage. Two scenarios with the same expected value can feel completely different. If a client's psychological wellbeing matters to us — and it should — we can't ignore the emotional weight of the decision.4. Health Span + Spending OptionalityA dollar at 62 is worth more than a dollar at 95. At 62 you can take the trip, help your kids with a down payment, do the things that require energy and mobility. Social Security won't advance you five months of benefits to take your daughter on the trip she'll talk about forever. Previously, Matthew was VP of Worldwide Retention at LogMeIn, where he owned NRR across nine products—giving him a rare masterclass in retention challenges at different stages and scales. In this episode, we uncover why retention isn't a problem you solve when growth stalls—it's DNA you build from day one. Matthew shares the paradox of his career: building a company with 95%+ annual retention that got acquired, versus joining a high-growth PLG business with churn issues that needed solving before scaling further. We explore why over-indexing on either growth or retention creates problems, how to identify the usage patterns that predict churn in the first three weeks, and why every company that tries to fix retention late struggles. The lesson: balance from the beginning beats transformation later. We also discuss how Hunter achieved 3X growth this year by going back to basics—running a rigorous ICP analysis, choosing battles they could win instead of markets where competitors were spending $100M, and layering new customer segments without creating product bloat. Finally, we dig into cold outreach data: why email lists under 100 people dramatically outperform larger ones, why shorter emails force the clarity that drives replies, and how constraints—not scale—are the real performance lever in outbound. As always, I'd love to hear from you. What do tariffs, Communist China, and central bank digital currencies have in common? They're all part of the rapidly unfolding war over America's economic soul. This isn't just about tariffs or trade, it's about whether the U.S. survives as a free-market nation or slides into centralized financial control. The trio dives headfirst into the growing backlash against the Biden administration's scattered tariff policies, which are now triggering widespread price hikes, supply chain breakdowns, and small business panic, especially in the farming and construction industries. Tharp, with direct ties to a global tractor manufacturer, reveals just how deeply these tariffs are impacting real-world operations, from parts delays to soaring costs. Meanwhile, Walker breaks down how Trump's strategy, though well-intended, is being miscommunicated and politically sabotaged by opponents, and even some allies. But the episode doesn't stop there. The conversation takes a sharp turn as Briggs exposes the quiet but devastating removal of anti-CBDC language from the latest National Defense Authorization Act. Why did establishment Republicans side with Elizabeth Warren to strip protections against programmable currency from the bill? What does this say about Washington's willingness to hand financial control to unelected bureaucrats? And what does it mean when stablecoins, neither stable nor coins, are being pushed as the future of money? From suicidal farmers losing everything after China retaliated on soybeans, to skyrocketing construction costs driven by tariff volatility, to AI-driven social media psy-ops pushing civil division in America, this is the podcast episode that connects all the dots, from the store shelf to the Federal Reserve to Beijing. Briggs and his guests make one thing clear: tariffs without a long-term plan are destructive, and a programmable digital dollar may be the single greatest threat to American liberty since the founding. In this hard-hitting episode of On The Record, Christian Briggs sits down with political strategist Christopher Walker and marketing insider Jeremy Tharp to pull the curtain back on one of the most chaotic and consequential economic shifts of our time. If you care about your paycheck, your privacy, or your future, this is the episode you can't afford to miss.

Andrew Humberman BioSnap a weekly updated Biography. This is Biosnap AI, and Andrew Huberman has spent the past few days doing exactly what has turned him from Stanford neuroscientist into full-blown public figure: dropping tightly packaged science content while quietly expanding his media footprint and commercial ecosystem. The biggest long term biographical note is the continuing rollout of new Huberman Lab programming. On December 8, the Huberman Lab site released Master the Creative Process with legendary choreographer Twyla Tharp, a two and a half hour deep dive into routine, discipline, and creative work. Huberman positions himself not just as a brain explainer but as a kind of high performance curator, using Tharp to underscore his evolving brand as a coach of elite creativity as much as health.Just days later, on December 11, Huberman Lab Essentials issued How to Build, Maintain and Repair Gut Health with Stanford microbiome researcher Justin Sonnenburg. In this format, Huberman repackages earlier longform conversations into protocol driven, almost clinical briefings on diet, fiber, fermented foods, antibiotics, and probiotics. The Essentials line is increasingly central to his business model, feeding premium memberships, transcripts, and newsletter signups through the Huberman Lab platform and iHeart distribution, which still markets him as a top tier global podcast host.On the softer news side, Hindustan Times reported that Huberman's Instagram advice on how to study effectively has been circulating again, highlighting four habits used by high performing students: teaching others, eliminating distractions, structured time blocks, and active recall. For a scientist, having Indian mainstream press amplify old exam season clips is not trivial; it shows the stickiness of his protocols among students far outside his core U.S. tech and fitness audience.Lifestyle and wellness media continue to recycle one of his most viral ideas: NSDR, or Non Sleep Deep Rest. A recent explainer in the health and running outlet Runlovers credits Huberman with popularizing NSDR as a ten to twenty minute, neuroscience backed reset that mimics deep sleep brain states without grogginess, aimed at stressed professionals and learners. That kind of coverage cements NSDR as a signature Huberman concept in the broader self optimization culture. There are no credible reports in major outlets over the past few days of scandals, new Stanford roles, major investments, or public controversies involving him. Any claims beyond podcast releases, repurposed social clips, and third party explainers of his protocols appear, at this time, to be unverified chatter rather than established fact.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

Andrew Humberman BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.I am Biosnap AI, and over the past few days Andrew Huberman has been in classic form, blending lab-coat seriousness with lifestyle shock value in ways that will likely stick to his biography long after this news cycle fades. According to Huberman Lab, he released a new long-form episode with legendary choreographer Twyla Tharp titled Master the Creative Process, a two and a half hour conversation tying neuroscience to artistic discipline, daily rituals, and the mechanics of sustained creativity. The show notes emphasize tools for structuring creative work, the role of deliberate practice, and how movement and aging interplay with brain function; given Tharp's stature, this is a notable addition to Huberman's ongoing pivot from pure physiology into the broader culture of high performance. Huberman Lab Essentials simultaneously pushed out a shorter episode, Essentials The Science of Making and Breaking Habits, in which he repackages his core habit-formation framework: phase based scheduling across the 24 hour day, the 21 day program for wiring in behaviors, and the concept of linchpin habits that make all other goals easier. The Essentials release is more than filler; it reinforces his brand as the protocols guy and keeps his behavioral toolkit in heavy rotation on YouTube and podcast feeds. The Hindustan Times reports on a recent Huberman Lab conversation with UCL neuroscientist Glen Jeffery about LED lighting, quoting the headline grabbing line that some researchers view chronic indoor LED exposure as an asbestos level health crisis and amplifying Huberman's own Instagram caption warning that LED bulbs damage mitochondria while praising full spectrum and incandescent light as healthier for cellular energy. That piece, based largely on social media clips, has spun his light and circadian niche into a broader public health talking point, even as the outlet notes it has not independently verified all claims. On social channels, Huberman Lab continues to promote these episodes across Instagram, X, and other platforms, though detailed metrics and any behind the scenes business moves such as new sponsors or partnerships have not been publicly documented in reliable outlets in the last few days and remain speculative at best.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

Two Experts Debate When You Should Take Social Security—But here's the TRUTH!

The Power Of Zero Show

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 19, 2025 10:45

Today's episode revolves around one of the biggest financial debates among pre-retirees and retirees: When should you take Social Security? Host David McKnight touches upon the recent debate of two of the smartest voices in the field – Dr. Laurence "Larry" Kotlikoff and Dr. Derek Tharp – on this exact question. Dr. Tharp, out of the University of Southern Maine, notes that economists commonly recommend delaying social security benefits until age 70. Boston University's Dr. Kotlikoff agrees and explains that delaying can give you a 76% higher monthly benefit compared to taking it at age 62.  Since Social Security is inflation-adjusted and guaranteed for life, it acts as longevity insurance. Hence, Dr. Kotlikoff thinks that waiting doesn't only help you but your loved ones too. Dr. Tharp isn't convinced: he points out that only about 10% of workers actually wait until age 70 to claim benefits. Overall, he sees studies that recommend delaying rely on overly conservative assumptions – they assume that retirees earn returns similar to Treasury inflation-protected securities. With this line of thinking, if your portfolio is earning 5% real returns instead of 2%, then delaying your benefits might not look as attractive mathematically… Dr. Kotlikoff cites Menahem Yaari's 1965 paper, which suggests looking at delaying social security like buying insurance. It protects you from the catastrophic risk of living too long and running out of money.  The debate continues with Dr. Tharp talking about the sequence of return risk.  If the market drops early in retirement and you're forced to withdraw more from your investments to delay Social Security, you can permanently damage your "nest egg". Even though he acknowledges Dr. Tharp's point, Dr. Kotlikoff points out that most retirees have options, such as continuing to work longer, cutting spending, downsizing, or borrowing temporarily instead of taking benefits early. Plus, he adds, the people most affected by sequence of returns risk are, generally, wealthier households… Dr. Tharp concludes the debate by citing a study showing that retirees tend to spend about 80% of predictable income streams like Social Security or pensions, but only about 50% of portfolio income. He also brings up Bill Perkins' book Die With Zero into the conversation. Perkins believes that Americans often focus too much on lifespan and not enough on health span. Dr. Kotlikoff responds by stressing that some people underspend, while others overspend… and that's exactly why there's a need for good planning software. For David, both Dr. Kotlikoff and Dr. Tharp make valid points, and it all boils down to a key question: how long are you going to live? If you're likely to die at 63, then you should probably take Social Security at 62. If you're going to live to age 100, it makes sense to wait until you're 70. While there's no accurate way to determine that, there's currently a group of people who are in the business of figuring that out: life insurance actuaries. David shares two reasons why you may want to consider the additional benefits of life insurance, especially Indexed Universal Life (IUL).       Mentioned in this episode: David's new book, available now for pre-order: The Secret Order of Millionaires David's national bestselling book: The Guru Gap: How America's Financial Gurus Are Leading You Astray, and How to Get Back on Track Tax-Free Income for Life: A Step-by-Step Plan for a Secure Retirement by David McKnight DavidMcKnight.com DavidMcKnightBooks.com PowerOfZero.com (free video series) @mcknightandco on Twitter  @davidcmcknight on Instagram David McKnight on YouTube Get David's Tax-free Tool Kit at taxfreetoolkit.com

Delay to 70? Not So Fast - The New Case for Claiming Early

Only about 4% of retirees actually wait until age 70 to claim Social Security, despite the financial benefits of delaying them. This comes from an article by Derek Tharp at Kitces.com titled “The Flaws In Using A 0% Discount Rate To Justify Delaying Social Security”. It takes a hard look at why the common advice to “wait until 70” might not always hold up in the real world.  Tharp argues that the assumptions baked into much of the research—especially the idea that a future Social Security dollar is worth the same as a dollar today—can tilt the math toward delay, while ignoring very real risks like mortality, sequence of returns, policy changes, and even health-span. I'll share the points and give my commentary on the topic. Thanks for hitting the Play button! Then in our listener question segment: We'll talk about whether it ever makes sense to use a SPIA to bridge the gap until Social Security. What are the pros and cons, and would I ever recommend one? The recent worker strike at a Monroe cheesemaker highlights a larger issue regarding immigration. This is according to Wisconsin Cheese Maker Association Executive Director John Umhoefer. Last month, workers at W&W Dairy went on strike after new ownership required employees to verify their immigration status through E-Verify. John explains that E-Verify is a national program required for dairy plants that make products for the government. But he says the situation is highlighting a larger issue: America’s immigration system and what it means for the future of food production.Weather's a little cooler today but things are improving for the weekend. Harvest season is under way, although with some recent rains farmers are slowed down. Dr. Brent Tharp is a Technical Product Manager for Wyffels Hybrids. He says right now farmers should get out and check the stalk integrity. Tharp says farmers should target the fields they put fungicide on first because they will have decreased stalk integrity. He says that in Wisconsin he is seeing greater numbers of southern rust and tar spot. Overall Tharp says that the yield should remain good overall, but there may be up to a 20-bushel loss due to the diseases.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When Carson Tharp got his first Labrador retriever in college, he had no idea it would lead to creating one of waterfowl hunting's most innovative decoy systems. But that's exactly what happened when his frustration with existing motion decoys sparked an entrepreneurial journey that's now revolutionizing how hunters approach bringing birds to the spread.Carson joins us to share the remarkable story behind Jahpoo Outdoors and its game-changing motion decoy. Far from the typical hunting industry origin story, Carson's path took him from international relations studies at the University of Texas to developing a completely new approach to decoy technology. What makes this conversation particularly fascinating is how organic his progression was – driven purely by his passion for creating something he wanted for his own hunting, not initially as a business venture. The Jahpoo name itself comes with an unexpectedly charming backstory involving Carson's dog Sadie, mischievous roommates, and a misheard line from "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas." This personal touch underscores how the most authentic innovations often emerge from real experiences in the field rather than corporate boardrooms. Carson takes us through the challenging journey of product development – from crude prototypes and 3D printing to the complexities of injection molding and developing scratch-resistant paint that can withstand the harsh conditions waterfowlers face. What truly stands out is Carson's persistence in the face of rejection and setbacks. When engineering friends initially dismissed his idea as impossible, he pushed forward anyway. When early trade show presentations featured not-quite-working prototypes, he adapted and persevered. This resilience speaks to the entrepreneurial spirit driving innovation throughout the outdoor industry and offers valuable lessons for anyone pursuing their own passion projects. Pre-orders for Jahpoo revolutionary decoys are available now at www.jahpoo.com – but with inventory expected to arrive in late August and limited quantities available, serious waterfowlers should act quickly to secure theirs for the upcoming season.Companies we LOVE | Ways to Support the Podcast ↓froggtoggs - USE CODE ZD315 FOR 15 PERCENT OFF @ www.froggtoggs.com *Cannot be used in combination with any other promo code. Should you email or call prospects? Which method is best for effectively reaching your clients? To find out, listen to my chat with Matt Tharp, the CEO of Hunter.io. He provides data and insights on why businesses should focus more on cold email than cold calling.Meet Matt TharpMatt might be perceived as biased towards email since he's the CEO of Hunter.io, but he was drawn to the company precisely because of its commitment to email. He enjoys working with fast-moving businesses that prioritize high velocity and product-led growth strategies. He believes this approach helps build a robust pipeline with marketing, while the sales motion supports and supplements that pipeline.Sales-driven models, heavily dependent on closing the next deal, can make it challenging for new sellers or businesses to find their footing. Relying solely on cold calling makes pipeline building particularly difficult, and the current business environment is only making cold calling harder.Matt shares his own experience as a decision-maker: if someone cold calls him unexpectedly, he's likely to get annoyed because it almost always interrupts something he's doing.Marketing Strategy for Email OutreachMatt and his team conducted research to determine which marketing strategy prospects prefer. The results showed that 61% prefer cold emails, while less than 10% prefer cold calling. He also found that individuals in the US prefer digital outreach 71% more than calling. To successfully begin email outreach, Matt suggests keeping two key things in mind:1. How you build and segment your email list.2. How you write your content. He advises against trying to reach everyone when building your list. Instead, personalize it and make it relevant to your target audience. Keep your audience segments under 100 contacts to help maintain message relevance.Subject Line TrendsTo create subject lines that generate clicks, Matt emphasizes the importance of addressing a problem the buyer is facing. It's better not to be overly playful. Instead, speak to a problem that prospects genuinely care about, and in the first one or two sentences, demonstrate that you are there to solve it. Then, explain how you will solve their problem. The final step involves adding a clear and easy call to action at the bottom of the email."Looking at current trends for business scaling investments, it's clear: phone calls are becoming less and less effective." - Matt Tharp.ResourcesIf you need help scaling your business with email outreach, consider Hunter.io (I highly recommend it). Fellow “Asian tigers” South Korea and Taiwan share strikingly similar modern histories: Chinese influence, Japanese colonization, Cold War struggles, rule by military strongmen, economic miracles, and transitions to democracy. But there are also plenty of differences, too, especially when it comes to the fate of ex-presidents! Chris Tharp, author of the newly-released Plum Rain Press novel, “The Cuttlefish,” has spent over 20 years in Korea. He and John have a fun and wide-ranging discussion about these two dynamic nations.Read reviews of “The Cuttlefish” HERE and HERE.
