Kathryn Morgan is in the studio this month! She is a trailblazing ballerina - or bunhead - as she described herself in this interview - who has redefined what a ballet career can look like beyond traditional company life. She began her professional career in 2006 with the New York City Ballet, rising to the rank of soloist before making the difficult decision to leave the company to focus on personal health challenges. She made a return to the stage with Miami City Ballet in 2019. In 2020, in the midst of pandemic shutdowns that challenged every industry — including the performing arts — she went to work to transform the ballet landscape by founding her brand, Kathryn Morgan & Friends. This is a community dedicated to celebrating dancers for who they are, beyond only their technical skills. Her platform offers online classes, workshops, and retreats, emphasizing the joy of dance and creating a supportive environment for adult ballet dancers in particular.Through her online classes, YouTube channel, social media platform, and workshops, Kathryn continues to inspire and empower dancers at all levels, challenging traditional norms for ballet and advocating for a more inclusive culture within the art form. Her willingness to speak out against toxic ballet culture and instead create a welcoming environment in her classes has not only enriched ballet but has sparked meaningful conversations about what being a successful, healthy and well rounded dancer truly looks like. This conversation discusses body image and health struggles particularly related to diet culture and weight, which can be a sensitive topic for some listeners. Those topics are throughout this conversation, so please be kind to yourself and fast forward if you hear something that's difficult for you. There are two places where that discussion is particularly detailed — around minutes 4:00-11:00 and again during minutes 21:00-27:00. Check out what Kathryn had to say!Follow Kathryn on Instagram: @kathryn_morganVisit Kathryn's website: www.kathrynmorganonline.comLearn more about Kathryn Morgan & Friends: www.kmandfriends.comSubscribe to Kathryn's YouTube channel: @kathryn_morganSign up for Kathryn's upcoming adult ballet retreats: https://www.kmandfriends.com/retreats Music in this episode:Waltz of the Flowers - TchaikovskyBarroom Ballet - Silent Film Light - Kevin MacLeodBarroom Ballet - Silent Film Light by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100310Artist: http://incompetech.com/@eblosfield  | theadultballetstudio@gmail.comAd: Support Author Meg Groff and her book Not If I Can Help It: A Family Lawyer's Battles for Justice for Victims of Domestic Violence and the Poor. Pierce discusses her early dance experiences and how her passion for dance led her to notable positions at the New York City Ballet and Miami City Ballet, where she spent seven years honing her craft.   But at the same time, there was much to negotiate: Pierce discusses the challenges of navigating gender and sexual identity in the ballet community. She reflects on the rigid gender-specific roles taught in partnering classes and her desire to break down these traditional dynamics through her choreography. This led, during the pandemic, to the creation of Queer the Ballet, a pioneering initiative aimed at creating inclusive spaces, work, and choreography for queer artists. Pierce talks about some of the work she's created, including the evening-length piece “Dream of a Common Language” which she directed, and the positive reception from the ballet community and audiences. She also shares her vision for the future of Queer the Ballet, emphasizing the need for ongoing support from the ballet community and inclusive training.

Adriana Pierce is a dancer, choreographer, and director based in New York City, and she joined the studio to talk about her work elevating queer artists in ballet, creating community, and her career in classical ballet as well as musical theater!  Adriana is the founder of Queer the Ballet, an initiative with the mission to widen the scope of classical ballet by producing queer work by queer dance artists. Queer the Ballet says on its website that it seeks to “queer” our ballet spaces and explore choreography often absent from ballet stages. After training at School of American Ballet, Adriana began her dancing career with New York City Ballet and Miami City Ballet before realizing another dream of hers - working in Broadway, film and tv! She appeared in the 2018 Broadway revival of Carousel, in Steven Spielberg's 2021 West Side Story film, and in the 2019 limited series on FX, Fosse/Verdon.  She's currently the associate director and associate choreographer for Justin Peck's “Illinoise" on Broadway. Adriana's other choreographic work features movement and partnering that allows dancers of all genders equal agency, dismantling the traditional gender dynamics of dance. Her choreography has been performed by American Ballet Theatre, Carolina Ballet, Columbia Ballet Collaborative, Ashley Bouder Project, and more. She's also completed residencies with Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU and Bridge Street Theatre, and she was recognized by Dance Magazine as one of 25 to watch in 2022. Alex recounts his reluctant start in ballet, his win at the Prix de Lausanne competition, and his tenure with prestigious ballet companies. The discussion also covers his successful pivot to TikTok during the pandemic, contrasting his traditional dance roles with the more profitable social media sphere. The episode concludes by exploring the broadening avenues for dancers in the digital era, with Alex's story providing both inspiration and actionable insights. By the age of 10, he was honing his ballet skills at the renowned Goh Ballet Academy in Vancouver, Canada. His prowess in ballet was further recognized when he became the first Canadian to win the prestigious Prix de Lausanne competition in Switzerland in 2004. Alex briefly danced with the American Ballet Theatre before joining the Miami City Ballet. By 2007, he had been promoted to the rank of soloist at MCB. His repertoire is vast, having performed leading roles in renowned productions such as Balanchine's Symphony In Three Movements, Twyla Tharp's Push Comes to Shove, and many more. In 2009, Alex's journey took an exciting turn when he auditioned for the FOX dance series, "So You Think You Can Dance." Although he made it to the final Top 20, contractual obligations with the Miami City Ballet forced him to withdraw. However, his impressive audition led to a promotion to the rank of principal soloist at MCB. In 2010, he took another shot at SYTYCD and made it to the Top 10 contestants for season seven. Unfortunately, an injury during a rehearsal forced him out of the competition. He has appeared on shows like "Glee," "Smash," "The Voice," and "Dancing with the Stars." He even made it to the semi-final Hollywood rounds of "American Idol." Alex's versatility is further highlighted by his dance single "Crave" and his role as Sniper in the Original Broadway Cast of "Newsies." Gene shares how he savors the relationships he has made and the individuals he has met, summing up his career by his treasured box of thank you notes, saying in his own words, "You measure your life, in some way,  by how many thank you notes you got."   Gene Schiavone became interested in photography as a child.  With no formal training, he went on to become a sought after Dance Photographer. What began as a childhood curiosity became a budding career,  photographing some of the worlds best ballet dancers. Gene attributes his introduction to the world of ballet to his wife through her involvement with ABT (American Ballet Theater). His informal conversation with renowned ballerina, Julie Kent, piqued his interest in the art form and then began to attend more ballet performances. Around that same time, Gene was given permission to photograph performances of ABT's studio company and after two years was invited to photograph the main company, which led to other requests for similar work. Gene's work and images includes Boston Ballet, Mariinsky Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet, Washington Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and The Radio City Rockettes among others. Music can play a powerful role in helping patients find strength and comfort both during and after treatment. During this engaging episode, Dr. Kauffman will demonstrate several methods for using music to train concentration, reduce reactivity, and induce a relaxation response. Mary Adelyn Kauffman, conductor, vocal coach, and pianist, studied at the University of Miami, earning master's and doctoral degrees in Collaborative Piano. Upon completion of her studies, Dr. Kauffman was a young artist at the Greater Miami Opera and performed with the Miami City Ballet before moving to Europe. While in Germany, she worked extensively with both adult and youth choirs and instrumental ensembles, instructing and leading both amateur and professional singers and musicians. An intense desire to find out just what it is about music that makes everyone feel so good led Dr.Kauffman back to Miami to pursue a master's degree and board certification in Music Therapy, as well as completing Neurologic Music Therapy certification. She now provides Music Therapy for patients, staff, and caregivers as a part of the Cancer Support Services team at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and is collaborating with colleagues in multiple disciplines on projects exploring the effects of music performance and music listening on mental and physical wellness. I'm going to let Kathryn share her story in her own words, but I will share that after being diagnosed with a thyroid condition she had no choice but to leave the world of ballet and its unreasonable demands behind. Getting married and thinking she would live out the rest of her life as a happy wife, Kathryn endured immense heartbreak and used ballet to cope with the pain of her divorce. The remarkable part of Kathryn's story is her return to the stage at the age of 30 as a soloist with Miami city Ballet. An absolutely remarkable accomplishment after so much time off and a testament to her talent and skill. I have wanted to host Kathryn on the podcast for a very long time now, but I'll often wait to approach a potential guest until they have something really important to say, celebrate or share. In this case Kathryn released a now famous video titled 'Why I left Miami City Ballet' and after watching I immediately reached out. This video hit a lot of raw nerves for me. Kathryn should be beyond proud of her career. As I mention in our conversation, as someone who is also trying to turn an industry upside down and forge my own path, I look up to and admire people that through the power of social media and sheer determination manage to be the architect of their own life by designing a career and personal brand that previously hasn't really existed. This is a long, but important conversation. So let's get into it! But first, I'd just like to say thank you so much Kathryn for baring your soul, sharing your story with the world and for giving a voice to all the ballerinas who suffer in silence. ____________________ Get your FREE Balanced Ballerinas 'Intention Setting' worksheet HERE and start kicking GOALS: https://www.balancedballerinas.com/product/balanced-ballerinas-intention-setting-worksheet/ You can find more resources at www.balancedballerinas.com Instagram @thebalancedballerina Podcast @balancedballerinas Facebook - Balanced Ballerinas (ensure you join the *SECRET* Facebook group too!)

Jess Spinner is the Founder of The Whole Dancer and an ex-professional ballerina with Louisville Ballet. Jess began her journey into nutrition and health coaching when she had to leave behind the world of professional ballet due to an injury. Jess is a fully qualified Health Coach with over eleven years of experience behind her working with dancers from top companies such as New York City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Miami City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet Company as well as aspiring young ballerinas and adult ballet dancers from around the world. Jess and I have a lot in common. Our businesses were both born out of a gap in the industry. A gap that we only discovered because we experienced the pain and anguish of not feeling balanced... or whole. I love how the two are interchangeable throughout this conversation... Like myself, Jess struggled with body positivity, confidence and food choices as a young professional dancer and through research, study, discipline and innovation with her business has created a community that supports and encourages young dancers to find their wholeness, their balance... their best body (which you'll find out in this discussion is different for everyone). In this conversation Jess and I do focus on the additional challenges during this particular time whilst navigating food choices and body positivity. But Jess also helps us define health and success in the broader sense with a sprinkle of confidence boosters, common sense advice and helpful suggestions. _____________ Get your FREE Balanced Ballerinas 'Intention Setting' worksheet HERE and start kicking GOALS: https://www.balancedballerinas.com/product/balanced-ballerinas-intention-setting-worksheet/ You can find more resources at www.balancedballerinas.com Instagram @thebalancedballerina Podcast @balancedballerinas Facebook - Balanced Ballerinas (ensure you join the *SECRET* Facebook group too!)
