These episodes amplify the voices of healthcare providers at the intersection of disability and BIPOC identity, enlightening our understanding of challenges for multiple marginalized populations. Getting comfortable talking with patients or other healthcare professionals about disabilities can be challenging. It's not something that is typically covered in school, and if you don't have personal experience with the subject, you may find yourself floundering trying to find the right thing to say – or to avoid saying the wrong thing. And when you don't feel comfortable, how can you expect your patient to feel comfortable? We asked our Real World NP community their questions for working collaboratively with disabled patients. In this week's episode, we got answers from Andrea Dalzell, Disability Rights Influencer to those questions and more. · What is person-first language, and why it is so important· Things that you may not have considered about accessibility· What workplace accommodations are – and are not· How to advocate for people with disabilitiesWords matter. The way that we, as clinicians, receive and interact with our patients with disabilities translates to how they (and their disability) are perceived in so many other aspects of their life. Working to develop an understanding, in a deep way, of how a patient's disability impacts their overall life is a vital part of this. Likewise, improving understanding of how the language we use can positively or negatively impact patients, along with the ways that we interact with those same patients, is an important part of our roles as clinicians. She advocates for the inclusion of disabled healthcare providers, as well as better care for disabled patients. Not to mention, she is so much more than a nurse! Andrea is an activist, social media influencer, educator, nonprofit founder, athlete, and more. Follow Andrea on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @theseatednurse. Andrea is a Registered Nurse, Healthcare Advocate, Disability Rights Influencer, and most importantly, Survivor! She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 5, she was diagnosed with transverse myelitis which is an inflammation of the spinal cord that causes pain, muscle weakness, and paralysis. She was using a wheelchair full-time by the age of 12. Although this diagnosis was very critical, Andrea let absolutely nothing get in the way of being all that she could be. Andrea received her degree from the City University of New York, College of Staten Island. However, life after graduation for Andrea was the beginning of a long disappointing journey of trying to convince employers that she could handle the job duties of being a nurse in a wheelchair. While diligently trying to secure a position in a hospital, Andrea worked as a health director, case manager, and school nurse to make ends meet.  After 76 interviews, she was finally given the opportunity to prove herself when she was hired as the first Registered Nurse in a wheelchair in New York state. Today's guest is someone very special who is working tirelessly to change the field of nursing.  Andrea Dalzell is a registered nurse and a pioneering activist for people with disabilities. At five years old, she was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a neurological disorder that left her unable to walk. Despite spending most of her life in a wheelchair, Andrea has been determined to make a difference, graduating with honors and receiving many awards for her advocacy work and leadership, including the Cindy Loo Disability Rights Advocate Award.  In 2018, Andrea became not only a registered nurse, but the only nurse in all of New York City who is in a wheelchair. After the school where she was working closed down in March, Andrea heeded Governor Cuomo's call for help and began working on the frontlines with the city's COVID patients.  Throughout her professional journey, Andrea has had to fight against the preconceived notions that her professors, bosses and colleagues have had about her disability. She has worked tirelessly to promote health inclusion and advocate for people with disabilities. Last month, she was awarded the inaugural Craig H. Neilsen Visionary Prize, which she'll be using to start a foundation to encourage people with disabilities to get into the field of nursing and to ensure that nursing schools are equipped to handle students with disabilities.  Dr. Dan speaks with Andrea about her experiences, what she plans to do next and what she wants nurse leaders and other individuals working in the healthcare industry to know.  Links to recommended reading:  Craig H.
