For generations, nations around the world admired America, even as they quietly resented her. They wanted our prosperity, our innovation, our culture, and our influence. They watched the American dream become the world's dream. And instead of asking, "How do we become more like America?" too many asked, "How do we bring America down a notch?" That's where the Left found willing partners. For decades, they worked to convince Americans that our success wasn't earned, it was stolen. That our strength was oppression. That our confidence was arrogance. They taught us to apologize for our history instead of building on it. And for a while, it worked. We started exporting self-doubt instead of self-confidence. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen once said, "Jealousy is the tribute mediocrity pays to genius." There's a lot of wisdom packed into that one sentence. Because America's influence is undeniable. The real question isn't whether we'll influence the world. We always will. The question is whether we'll export weakness or rediscover strength. Whether we'll apologize for American exceptionalism or remind the world why it admired this country in the first place. I was reminded of that during a recent conversation with a group of Canadians. Listening to them talk about President Trump, America, and the challenges facing their own country, I realized something important. Canada's story isn't really about Canada. Venerable Fulton J. Sheen was one of the greatest spiritual leaders and entertainers in America's tumultuous twentieth century. His television shows, for which he eventually won an Emmy Award, reached millions of viewers, and in the 1950s and ‘60s, “Fulton Sheen” was a household name. But his greatest gift was in finding lost sheep. Through his thought, wit, and compassion, many thousands of people likely entered the Church, from all walks of life. Among them were jazz legend Ada “Bricktop” Smith, journalist Heywood Broun, Communist activist Louis Budenz, U.S. Congresswoman Clare Boothe Luce, spy Elizabeth Bentley, composer Fritz Kreisler, Communist Bella Dodd, and Hollywood starlet Virginia Mayo. In 1974, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen expressed his intention to write a book on the demonic, but the project never materialized. Fr. Dave Tomaszycki, a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit and current priest-secretary to Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, took on the task of compiling and editing Sheen's intended work, using Sheen's own words to bring the vision to life.
