His biography is filled with basketball. What's not in Ricado Patton's bio is his childhood which included being raised by his grandmother after his mom left him and his sister when he was just 9 months old. His father wasn't present either, so Ricardo figured out how to navigate life through basketball.   His college career at Belmont kept him close to home in Nashville. After college, he stayed in the south for many years as a middle school and high school coach and assistant coaching jobs at Middle Tennessee, Arkansas Little-Rock and Tennessee State. Then came his trek to Colorado where he started as an assistant and three years later, got his break as a head coach.  From 1996 to 2007, Ricardo had three 20-win seasons and took the Buffs to the postseason six times. He also landed a huge recruit in Chauncey Billups who would go on to be a #3 overall draft pick.   Ricardo left CU on his own terms and continued to coach here and there, including a return to the state of Colorado when he was an assistant for Chauncey's brother Rodney at the University of Denver. It seems Mr. Big Shot is never too far removed from Ricardo.   That trend continues today as Ricardo is now the Executive Director of the Porter-Billups Leadership Academy, where he loves the challenge of raising money to help young people from underserved communities become future leaders.

Governor Brian Kemp picked a Duluth-based attorney to fill the newly created seventh Gwinnett County State Court Judge seat, starting in January. Kemp's office announced on Friday night that the governor has appointed Jaletta Long Smith to fill the seat, which was created by the Georgia General Assembly earlier this year. Smith is a Gwinnett native and a litigation associate at Andersen, Tate and Carr PC in Duluth. Smith's focus area at Andersen, Tate and Carr has been on civil litigation and appellate matters, according to the governor's office. She earned her bachelor's degree in communication studies and Spanish from Clemson University and her law degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's William H. Bowen School of Law. Smith served as a law clerk for three judges: U.S. District Court for Eastern District of Arkansas Judge Kristine G. Baker, retire Arkansas Supreme Court Justice Robert L. Brown and former Georgia Supreme Court Justice Britt C. Grant. She handled civil and criminal appeals for Brown and Grant and federal civil and criminal trial matters for Baker. Smith was a Bowen Scholar, which is a full academic scholarship, at Arkansas-Little Rock and graduated in 2010 with high honors and among the top three students in her class. She was also the executive editor of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review. During her time at Arkansas-Little Rock, she was also one of six students who were picked to compete on the Bowen Trial team and received a Dean's Certificate of Distinguished Service. She was a member of he Judge Henry Woods Inn of Court in Little Rock as well. Smith was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and a Tiger Feature Twirler at Clemson, according to her biography on the Andersen, Tate and Carr website. Smith and her husband, Andy, have two children. The Atlanta Regional Commission awarded funding for seven transportation-related projects in Gwinnett County, including a Satellite Boulevard Bus Rapid Transit line, on Wednesday. The projects are part of a list of 77 metro Atlanta transportation projects that will split $235 million in federal transportation funding that the ARC is tasked with distributing. The funding is part of the Transportation Improvement Program, also known as TIP. The proposed BRT line on Satellite Boulevard is one of the biggest projects from Gwinnett, and it is set to receive $6.4 million in federal funding through the ARC. It is expected to run from the OFS property off Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross to the Sugarloaf Mills Park and Ride lot in Lawrenceville. The federal funding will be used to begin environmental and design work on the proposed BRT line. Gwinnett officials have been looking at how to improve mobility adjacent to the Interstate 85 corridor. BRT, which is a setup where buses act somewhat similar to trains in that they travel in dedicated lanes, is one of the options that has been discussed in recent years. The county is putting up $1.6 million as a local matching share on the federal dollars, meaning a total of $8 million will be used to kick off the environmental and design work. But, BRT is not the only big project in Gwinnett that is expected to get funding. There is $6 million in federal funding going to the Georgia Department of Transportation for the widening of Scenic Highway, also known as State Route 124, between U.S. Highway 78 in Snellville and Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville. State and county officials have been planning to add an additional lane in each direction for years. For a list of the other projects receiving funds, please visit Gwinnett Daily Post dot Com.   Duluth senior Sean Kimani will play his college football in the Ivy League, committing Sunday to Columbia University. Kimani, a 6-foot-5, 290-pound offensive lineman, was a first-team all-county selection this season by the Touchdown Club of Gwinnett. He also has a 4.0 GPA. He joins a Lions program that finished 2022 with a 6-4 record, going 3-4 against Ivy League competition. The backdrop for Lions home games is different than what you might see on most college campuses, as Columbia plays its home games in Manhattan, at Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium. Columbia's 2023 football season kicks off on September 16th at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. Ivy League teams traditionally begin their football seasons a few weeks later than other colleges to help accommodate players doing summer internships across the county and world. Shiloh Elementary School is getting a new principal — who parents, students and teachers are already familiar with — while Gwinnett County Public Schools will see new faces in two positions, including a new chief financial officer and executive director of leadership development. Jennifer Mercedes, who has been an assistant principal at Shiloh Elementary School since 2018, will become the school's new principal. Meanwhile, Masana L. Mailliard has been hired as Gwinnett County Public Schools' new chief financial officer and Chandra Walker will become the district's new executive director of leadership development. In addition to being Shiloh's assistant principal for the new four years, Mercedes has held positions at two other schools in the district, according to a background provided by GCPS. Mailliard is coming to GCPS from the DeKalb County School District, where she has been the deputy chief financial officer since 2020. And, Walker has been a GCPS employee since 2003, and has served as the district's director of leadership development since 2013.   A fire that officials said was caused by an electrical issue destroyed a Loganville home Friday night. Just before 6 p.m., firefighters responded to a fire at the 800 block of Creek Cove Way South East. A neighbor called 911 to report the house fire and believed that the homeowner was absent. When fire crews arrived they found heavy fire blowing through the roof. Once the fire was knocked down searches were completed that confirmed the house was vacant during the fire, McGiboney said. The scene was brought under control by 7:20 p.m. Twenty-nine firefighters responded to the incident. A Dacula man has been arrested and charged in the murder of a Gwinnett County senior corrections officer who was killed in the parking lot of the county's corrections facility earlier this week. The Gwinnett County Police Department's SWAT Team arrested Yahya Abdulkadir, in Lithonia on Friday afternoon. He faces felony murder and aggravated assault charges in the death of Scott Riner, who was killed on Tuesday morning. The Gwinnett Police Homicide Unit has been working this case around the clock since early Tuesday when the incident occurred. The SWAT Team was backed up by Gwinnett Sheriff's deputies, U.S. Marshals, ATF agents and officials from the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office as they made the arrest. The suspect was arrested without incident. #GwinnettDailyPost #Georgia #LocalNews        --          -         -          The Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast is local news for Lawrenceville, Norcross, Duluth, and all of Gwinnett County. Register Here for your essential digital news.             This podcast was produced and published for the Gwinnett Daily Post and GwinnettDailyPost.com by BG Ad Group    For advertising inquiries, please email j.southerland@bgadgroup.com For more information be sure to visit www.bgpodcastnetwork.com   https://www.lawrencevillega.org/  https://www.foxtheatre.org/  https://guideinc.org/  https://www.psponline.com/  https://www.kiamallofga.com/  https://www.milb.com/gwinnett  https://www.fernbankmuseum.org/           See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tanner Rockwell is the Head Baseball Coach at Southern Arkansas University Tech, a Junior College in Camden, Arkansas. His college playing career started at Arkansas Baptist College where he played two seasons and then finished his career at the Division I University of Arkansas Little Rock. In his playing career, he was a standout two-way player putting up incredible numbers in both hitting and pitching. He graduated from the University of Arkansas Little Rock in 2015 and began his coaching career just a few years later, accepting the Head Coaching job at Arkansas Baptist College in 2018. Then, from 2019-2021 he was the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator for Division II Ouachita Baptist University. In April of 2021, he accepted the Head Coaching position at Southern Arkansas University Tech. In this episode, we start off talking about Coach Tanner's decision to become the Head Coach of a JUCO baseball program that is brand new. As well as the JUCO recruiting process, specifically his experiences selling his JUCO program to recruits. Coach Tanner also goes into depth on the value of playing multiple positions as a high-school athlete, giving players the analytics they want, and evaluating infielders and which tools are the most important in this process. We also talk about the process of how to find the right fit when choosing a college and its baseball program. Coach Tanner believes that you should find a school that you're valued and wanted rather than somewhere where you're fighting for a roster spot. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fiob/support

Those who have had a college experience, whether it was a single class or a full degree program, would likely admit that the college environment provided countless new experiences. In this episode, Dr. P. talks with Dr. Darryl Holloman about how college experiences can influence students' personal development in multiple ways. Darryl is Vice President for Student Affairs at Spelman College, where he is responsible for supporting a student life agenda that promotes the growth, development, and academic success of every Spelman student. He oversees program development, financial management, and personnel administration for all student development functions including the Office of the Dean of Students, Housing and Residence Life, Counseling Services and Student Access Center, Student Health Services and Campus Wellness, Student Life and Engagement, and student judicial processes. Prior to Spelman, Darryl worked as the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Georgia State University, Assistant Vice President for Student Life and Assistant Professor at Columbus State University, and Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Paul Robeson Campus Center at Rutgers University-Newark. He has also served as a full-time faculty member at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. Darryl has presented more than 80 research papers at conferences hosted by the Association for the Study of Higher Education, the American Educational Research Association, the Association of College Unions International, and the National Academic Advising Association, to name a few. Dr. Holloman's research agenda examines how cultural identities and cultural distinctions shape college experiences and he has authored several articles and book chapters. Darryl is an Atlanta native and has earned three degrees from Georgia State University: a doctorate in educational policy studies; a master's degree in human resource development; and a bachelor's degree in English with a concentration in creative writing. When cycling wasn't fully panning out, he dug into running more, landed a scholarship at Univ of Arkansas Little Rock, and eventually ran professionally (cycling's Cat 1 level) in Sweden. Johnny drops some knowledge on what it takes to go from running to cycling, gets into being early and prepared for race day, and has some great stories along the way. While he's often at the pointy end of the crit, he's also a phenomenal road racer and newly crushing the gravel scene. If you want to get good at racing, Johnny will tell you that it takes a lot of time: you need to race, study racing, watch other riders, and learn as much and as often as you can. A conversation between him and Colin Strickland helped him learn to roll the dice a bit more and go for 1st as opposed to a more guaranteed top 10. As we talked about in the previous video, no one is going to remember your 4th place finish except for you. Everyone will remember when you went off the front and got caught on the line for dead last though. Or, if you win! The legal industry relies upon the writings and communications of lawyers, judges, and lawmakers. For the citizens and clients who are subject to these legal writings, understanding the legalese is painfully frustrating. We were asked by a fan of the show (in full disclosure, it was Greg's sister-in-law Wendy) why lawyers can't write in plain English. We pulled together a panel of four experts on legal communications and asked them just that. It turns out that writing in plain English is not only possible, but it is the preferred method of legal writing. Our guests on this episode are: Neil Guthrie - Director, Professional Development, Research, and Knowledge Management, at Aired & Berlis LLP in Toronto. Author of Guthrie's Guide to Better Legal Writing. Chris Trudeau – Law and Medical Professor at the University of Arkansas/ Little Rock and author of The Public Speaks: An Empirical Study of Legal Communication. As well as journal articles on plain English writing for lawyers in Healthcare. Jesse Katz – Litigation Editor at O'Melveny and Myers, as well as a Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist before taking on his editing role. Sara Harris – Jackson Walker associate who is known for her writing skills, and is an editor for the American Lawyer's Young Lawyer Editorial Board. Suggested Reading List Typography for Lawyers Plain English for Lawyers Letting Go of the Words Information Inspirations Greg got to drop in on a Houston Young Lawyer Association meeting for First-Generation Lawyers on the topic of lawyer recruiting. The meeting was great, but the biggest impact was made by a question a minority law student was asked on why his experience as a person of color would bring value to the firm. Is that something a firm should even be asking? Marlene geeks out over Evan Parker's article on How to Talk Data and Influence People, Including Lawyers. This dovetailed nicely with our guests' discussion on presenting the information in a way that tells a story and presents information in a way that is understandable by the reader. Data analytics is just another method of communicating. The trick is communicating in a way that actually makes sense and informs.

Monday, the worst day of the week if you’re a college wrestling fan. I believe each year, there are less than 10 total dual meets across all divisions on Mondays. In a sense, wrestling Mondays give you a case of the Mondays, and I do believe you’d get your ass kicked for saying something like that. Pack up your red staplers and burn down the building, this is Short Time Shots, a look at the day’s wrestling scores and more from around the world of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant. And while I’m getting you reacquainted with the show or if I’m introducing you do it, I’ll typically do these on days where there’s at least 10 duals around the country. One of the podcast newsletters I subscribe to, James Cridland’s Podnews, does a weekday show and they’re about two minutes long. I did Shots long before that show launched, but in days where there isn’t scores, might as well tell you what’s in the newsletter so I can entice you to sign up for it – it’s free – and pitch a plug for this network, since I’d rather strip out the pre-roll ads here if I can get enough support for the program. That’s a hint. And no, the regular Short Time hasn’t gone away, but this was the format the show started with and my enterprise features will be sprinkled in a few times a month. That feed still exists, a Shots-only feed exists, and if you’re a glutton for punishment, the main Mat Talk feed exists and that literally feeds you with in excess of 30 shows a month. So here’s the items you’ll be reading about. From the DWN:   Shannon Scovel from NCAA.com breaks down what we learned from the U23 World Championships and how it will impact this year’s college wrestling season. Shannon’s been writing some solid stuff for NCAA.com the last two years. She was a swimmer at American U. during her college years and is worth reading. In recruiting news from IAwrestle, Colorado state champion Cam Lucero has committed to Iowa. The junior at Pagosa Springs was a state champion at 145 pounds last season. West Virginia will have an unofficial girls state wrestling tournament in February at Parkersburg High School to gauge interest in girls wrestling. The full story via Jessica Wilt at The Journal. Speaking of Parkersburg, congrats to Kyle Bratke and his wife Olivia on the arrival of their first born, Hayden. I’ll send you a Diaper Genie. com profiles several of the state’s native wrestling sons on the roster at North Dakota State University. The Centre Daily Times in State College and Lauren Muthler tells wrestling fans what they should expect from Penn State’s 2019-20 college wrestling season. Baldwin Wallace’s Stanley Bleich was the Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week after he won the Ithaca Invitational and was named the tournament’s OW in the process. Paul Santomarco of Lycoming had three falls at the Lycoming Invitational and was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Wrestler of the Week. Not trying to make fun of the young man, but I couldn’t help but think about Three Amigos and the small village of Santo Poco. Just don’t shoot the invisible swordsman. Joining Santomarco with MAC honors was Chase Smith of the first-year program at Alvernia. He too was 3-0 with three falls at the Lycoming Invitational at 174 pounds. Wisconsin native Tres Leon from the University of the Cumberlands was the Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Week. The All-American went 5-0 and pinned Bluefield’s Creed Lumpp in the finals at 157 pounds. Nolan Saxton of Reinhardt was the Appalachian Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week after he defeated Division II’s fourth-ranked Kevin Almond of Emmanuel last week. In what used to be the Iowa Conference, Nebraska Wesleyan’s Eron Haynes was the American Rivers Conference Wrestler of the Week after winning the Yellowjacket Open down in Rochester, Minnesota. He was the school’s first All-American when he placed last year in Roanoke. They’re coached by Brandon Bradley, a past Virginia state runner-up from Henrico. Yup, Virginia references, they’re everywhere. Finally, wrestling fan Ted Carreras writes a blog called Hand Raised. He does weekly columns with his thoughts on wrestling. These are reminiscent of things I’ve written for InterMat, Wrestling 411, TheMat and basically any other wrestling job I’ve had the last 20 years. Ted, this is good stuff, so I’m including it in today’s newsletter and Shots.   On The Network: Episode 9 of my groundbreaking, earth-shattering, monumental, award-nominated #ROCKedUp podcast chronicling the foundation and formation of the new wrestling program at Arkansas-Little Rock has dropped. This episode talks with head coach Neil Erisman and U. of the Ozarks head coach LeRoy Gardner about scheduling in year one and how the two schools came together to schedule Little Rock’s first home dual on November 24. All those things I said in the beginning are true. It’s probably the reason I’m spitting out less formulated interview shows and taking a more creative look into the storytelling aspect of wrestling. Seriously. In the Game of Throws fantasy football league, here are the SAFE FOR WORK team scores we can report: The Lorath Bay Buccanneers beat Never Go Full Eli 82-79. Kuhsti Kings beat Straight Cash Homie 76-66, Team Payne beat A Gurley Has No Name 131-91 and Teet Brand Giants Milk beat Game of Jones 108-72. The other two games were not reported due to team names befitting of fantasy football, but not a wrestling podcast. All scores unofficial until Tuesday, which Richard Immel knows all too well. There’s a lot of moving parts in a college athletics department. It’s more than just an Athletic Director and some coaches. There’s support staff, administrative assistants, academic support, compliance, sports information, marketing and promotions, ticket sales, donor relations – so when the University of Arkansas-Little Rock announced its new Division I wrestling program in March of 2018, there was a lot more work involved from an athletic administration standpoint after the announcement than just hiring a coach and recruiting some wrestlers. While the landscape of big time college sports today seems to be enamored with pay-for-play and athlete likenesses, sports outside of basketball and football stay out of that mainstream spotlight. For administrators at most places, the focus on a successful college athletics program isn’t always just about championships – it’s about their belief in what athletics can bring to a campus – a real sense of community. For Little Rock, a coach has been hired and a start time has been set. But it’s not just up to newly hired head coach Neil Erisman to get things done – there’s a lot of moving parts that don’t directly involve wrestling mats and headgear. It’s not all falling on people like AD Chasse Conque, either. That’s where people like Molly Castner come in. Welcome to Rocked Up, the story of the foundation and formation of the first Division I college wrestling program in Arkansas, starting in November of 2019 at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. This is the seventh edition of this story. The first six set the table, because to tell the story of the Little Rock Trojans wrestling program, you had to start from the ground up – with the foundation of Arkansas high school wrestling, which didn’t even exist 11 years ago. She strives to continue to share positive news and information to help her community through a servant’s heart. Nicole Walker’s Interview Commentary I really enjoyed this interview with Terri and I hope you did as well! I agree with Terri’s viewpoint on the importance of being organized to successfully map out and complete our goals. Goal setting affords us the opportunity to achieve our objectives, if we put in the work needed. If you want to avoid distractions and procrastination, focus, measure progress, and stay motivated then explore organized goal setting. Organizing the attainment of our goals is essential to stay on target while exuding the least amount of energy possible to achieve success. To achieve optimal performance our goals need to be broken down into the tasks and steps required for attainment. Using products such as Terri’s Goal Digger Journal are indeed a great asset to help with the journey! I admire Terri’s servant heart, which is shown in her efforts to give back and help others grow. Choosing to have an Outreach Ministry is definitely a great way to service the community and ignite the future generation of leaders. Successful leaders give back, by serving those in need! Social entrepreneurship is on the rise, and I am happy to see Terri doing her due diligence in this arena. A quote by J. Buchman reads, “The role of a GREAT LEADER is not to give greatness to human beings, but to help them extract the greatness they already have inside them.” I can relate to Terri’s viewpoint on the importance of mental health and her service in improving the mindsets of those within her circle of influence, as I believe and practice the same. Mental health and mindset are the foundation to success. Terri and I push the same agenda of embracing mental health and seeking ways to stay healthy mentally, such as journaling and going to therapy. How we view life shapes what we see. Having a healthy mindset gives us the foundation needed to see things in a more positive manner. A quote by Steve Maraboli reads, “Once your mindset changes, everything on the outside will change along with it.” Nicole Walker’s Takeaway of the Week Terri shared her personal journey to learning the importance of consistent promotion to increase response rate, when she failed to do so within her business. Taking the advice from someone who has realized a gap in operations and worked to close it, is a no brainer for me! I am proud of myself in knowing that I understand the importance of consistency and practice it in some areas of my business, and I also realize that I have areas where I can improve my consistency efforts. In an effort to continually improve, I will make it my business to figure out how I can be more consistent in the areas I am lacking, because my goal is to increase my response rate in all that I do. A quote by Dwayne Johnson reads, “Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come.” Nicole Walker’s Leadership Challenge My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life.  I know it’s hard to absorb too much information at one time and it’s even harder to try and implement too many changes at once.  When I attend a training or listen to podcasts I aim to walk away with a least one thing that stuck out to me and one way that I can change as a result.  I challenge you to do the same!  If you decide to take me up on my challenge I would love to know about your key take way.  If you care to share please go to the She Leads Podcast Discussion Group on FB and leave your comment under the Takeaway Thursday post for Season 4 Episode 10. Beard was the coach at Arkansas-Little Rock when they knocked out the Boilermakers in a 12-over-5 upset.   Texas Tech advances to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history. Tech takes down Purdue 78-65 in pretty convincing fashion. Tech got to a 5-point halftime lead and never let up. The Red Raiders closed the first half on a 10-0 run and kept the pressure on Purdue the entire second half.  Justin Gray was HUGE in this game, scoring 12 points and grabbing 7 boards. Keenan Evans played a solid game, scored a little under his season average but 3 other Red Raiders scored in double figures around him. Such an impressive win all the way around. These guys are making history, getting hot and riding momentum in the right direction at the right time.  Texas Tech is set to take on Villanova on Sunday at 1:20 p.m. for a shot to advance to the Final Four in San Antonio.
