What do we lose when our food comes from nowhere in particular? For Cole Mannix, that question is at the heart of his work. He's part of Old Salt Co-op, a group of ranchers outside Helena, Montana working to unseat Big Beef—not with billion-dollar backing or slick marketing, but with community, collaboration, and a commitment to place. In today's episode, we talk about what it means to break out of the commodity system, the power of cooperation in an industry dominated by consolidation, and how reconnecting food production to place might just be the key to restoring rural and small town life. This is a story about beef—but really, it's about belonging. In this episode, we dive into: How Old Salt Co-op is using a cooperative model to rebuild local meat economies. Why the beef you buy at the store often has no traceable connection to where—or how—it was raised. What we lose when we prioritize cheap, consistent food over community and ecology. The hidden costs of a commodity system that favors efficiency over stewardship. What it takes to rebuild local processing, distribution, and marketing from the ground up. The creative mix of restaurants, festivals, and direct-to-consumer sales that make Old Salt's model work. Why betting on local food systems might be the least risky path forward.More about Cole and Old Salt Co-Op:Cole is part of an extended family that has ranched together since 1882 near Helmville, MT. He did an undergrad in biology, then another in philosophy at Carroll College, then a masters in theology at Boston College. From ‘12-'16 he worked for a valiant startup called Salt of the Earth Ranchers Cooperative. From '17-'20 he worked for Western Landowners Alliance to advance policies and practices that sustain working lands, connected landscapes, and native species. As a co-founder of Old Salt Co-op, he is helping to build a regenerative economy for damn fine Montana meat. He was part of Helena's 20 under 40 class of ''22 and in '23 was named Montana Ambassadors Entrepreneur of the Year. He and spouse Eileen Brennan live in Helena with two sons, Finn and Charlie.Agrarian Futures is produced by Alexandre Miller, who also wrote our theme song. This is our first-ever LIVE podcast recording! This episode was recorded on the main stage of the 2024 Main Street Summit in Watford City, ND and features guests Pat Bertagnolli of Job Service North Dakota and Mike Knutson of Dakota Resources.   When we got asked to host this live show during the summit, we took to the socials—as we do—to ask what our people needed the most help with. Overwhelmingly, the idea of how to get more people involved in making our communities great emerged as the topic, so that's what this episode is about and we're so excited for you to hear from these two amazing guests!   About Pat:   A native of Montana, and a North Dakota resident since 2011, Bertagnolli earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Carroll College in Helena in 1990 and has held his certification as a Senior Certified Professional in Human Resources since 2015. Prior to his appointment, Bertagnolli served in a variety of leadership roles in both human resources and operations, and most recently was the Community Enhancement Director in Watford City, ND.   Bertagnolli was first appointed to the Workforce Development Council in 2014 by then-Governor Jack Dalrymple. He continues to serve on this council, as well as the State Board for Career and Technical Education, Interagency Council on Homelessness, the Administrative Committee for Veterans Affairs, State Information Technology and Advisory Board, Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems committee, and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies.   In February of 2022, Governor Doug Burgum appointed Patrick Bertagnolli to serve as the Executive Director of Job Service North Dakota. Job Service North Dakota has a statewide footprint and impacts North Dakota's workforce through many workforce programs to connect employers and job seekers, through the unemployment insurance program to provide benefits to eligible workers, and through the labor market information department which provides education and insights for informed decision making.   About Mike: Mike facilitates and orchestrates the Dakota Resources Community Learning Network. He also serves as a community coach for rural communities. He has spent 15 plus years working in rural community development. His commitment to rural communities began when he recognized that his own behaviors (i.e. – the lack of community involvement and buying locally) were contributing the decline of his community. Since 2008, Mike has operated his own business, MAK(e) Strategies, working primarily as a facilitator and coach in rural settings. Among his volunteer activities, Mike has served as the chairman of the board for Glacial Lakes Tourism, Dakota Wesleyan University Alumni Association, Rural Schools Collaborative, and Southeast SD Tourism. Mike grew up outside of Hartford, SD, and graduated summa cum laude from Dakota Wesleyan University.   In this episode, we cover:  Why the “Same Ten People” can be frustrating for people on both sides The idea of civic apathy and how it develops How to combat civic apathy What to do about Gen-Z (hint: they're not really that different from generations prior) How recruiting volunteers goes hand-in-hand with recruiting new community members Links and Resources Mentioned: Ben Winchester's episode: https://www.growingsmalltowns.org/post/episode75 Jeff Sigler's episode about combating apathy in small towns: https://www.growingsmalltowns.org/post/episode99 Jeff Sigler's episode about growing communities for humans: https://www.growingsmalltowns.org/post/episode120 Job Service North Dakota: https://www.jobsnd.com/ Dakota Resources: https://dakotaresources.org/

319 Cultures, Conversations, and Community   The beauty of humanity is that we all share different cultures, from the differences in our food to whether we take our shoes off in the house, culture shapes how we interact with our community and our career which is why it is vital we have conversations about culture, so that we may find our community, teach others, and learn about another person's beliefs and values, in doing so we will all be stronger together as a community. In this episode Sarah Elkins and Kevin Hamm discuss the importance of community, culture, and the conversations that need to happen in order for us all to have a better understanding and respect for one another. Kevin offers valuable insight, intelligent conversation, and a healthy dose of humor, approaching this difficult topic with humanity and dignity.    Highlights A love for new and exciting things starts early and fosters growth and admiration for other cultures and ideas. What memories from your past impact your decisions to this day? Everyone sees the world through different lenses, be sure to encourage the growth and curiosity to see outside of your current lens.  Being yourself is vital to your survival and to being able to thrive as a human being. Fostering community through compassion and pride. Making sure the whole world knows you and your community exist.  Understand the cultural differences between yourself and other places, and understand that these differences can foster growth and connection between yourself and those of a different culture.  What access to other cultures do you have in your own community that you can explore right now. Ask questions! There is no harm in wanting to know more.   Quotes “At the time Governor Schwinden- I think it was Governor Schwinden, God I hope it was Governor Schwinden. Had just started the Sister State program with Kumamoto in Japan and so I joined a choir and discovered my love of sushi because we ended up going to Japan when I was a kid. And it's really fun to think about being an ambassador for the state of Montana going over when you're 12 years old or 11 years old, however old I was. Going over and being in front of the aristocracy, the Imperial Family, and all that in Japan, you know performing and being a soloist and homestays and meeting all these people, and having this incredibly intense, delightful introduction to how vast and different our world is, how diverse things are. When you're a kid and finding out some of those things that are common in other cultures we never even hear of, like at the time we didn't have a sushi restaurant in the state of Montana.” “The truth of the matter is I found a thriving and robust queer community up there as well and it was really interesting to see that this community that I knew existed in major metropolitan areas because Portland and Phoenix had given me that, also exists in these little tiny towns where people on a regular basis are like, “I'm going to move to the big city because I can't be here!” and then they move away. But there were some that were still there and wanted to live there and really loved it, and that was part of the realization that I was like, “Oh my community, the queer community, crosses every other boundary, whether it's racial or societal or economic, we're everywhere. And because we are everywhere we have community everywhere.” And that took me a little bit to figure out, but once I figured it out I was like “Oh I can move back to Montana because my community exists!”.” “It's not only that you don't want to be insulting in a lot of cases. I don't know that it would be insulting. They would just look at you like, “Oh you're not trying to be like us.” And I want to try to be like them. When I'm on their lands, in their place, in their house, I want to fit in, I want to belong, I don't just want to be there.” “The one thing I would tell anybody going into a new culture is don't be afraid to ask everything, ask the question that seems a little weird that you're like, “Oh I can't ask that.” You absolutely can.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, Are you going to go explore a culture that you haven't explored before as a result of hearing this conversation? I know I'm going to and it could be just down the street, I have friends who own a Cuban restaurant here in town they are originally from Cuba. I have met them, I've spent time with them, but I'm not sure I explored their culture quite enough yet. I could even go to one of the upcoming Pow Wow adventures, I would love to do that with one of my friends from the tribes. I'm going to do that this year and I hope Listeners that you will find a culture you're not familiar with, somewhere within a few hours of your home and go explore it. Your mind and your heart will be better for it.  And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Kevin Kevin Hamm, 50, is a small business owner, battle-tested community organizer, fearless activist, and lifelong advocate for the rights and dignity of all Montanans. He has had the privilege of calling Montana his home state from the age of five; that's 45 years, for anyone counting. Armed with an appreciation for the importance of community investment that can only come from a childhood in a rural state, Kevin has spent his adult life investing in ways to give back to the place that built him. He has served on the boards of Queen City Ballet and Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies, and founded the Happiness & Joy Foundation, a 501(c)3 that puts on Montana Pride — Montana's statewide Pride celebration, which Kevin has run for the last nine years. In addition to his deep commitment to community investment, Kevin is a skilled businessman with a strong track record in tapping into economic potential. Through his marketing work, he assisted in ATX's transition from a $5 million company to a $20 million company and later capitalized on the skills he learned there to start two small businesses from scratch that continue to thrive today. Through Studio 19, his first company founded in 2010, he took on the responsibility of managing live production for the athletics departments at all Frontier Conference schools in the state; he continues to work with Carroll College leading their stream team to this day. By 2018, his reputation as a skilled problem solver had grown his customer base to such a degree that he was able to start Auxilyum, a second company that lightens the tech support load. Most importantly, though, Kevin's background is that of a typical working Montanan. He has firsthand experience doing the real work that powers our state as a matter of necessity, not just as a hobby or a means of making friends with the neighbors. He knows what it's like to sacrifice sleep working alongside good people in hot kitchens, and to give up sleeping entirely while turning a dream into a business. Kevin also knows this place in a way that everyone with a Montana childhood will understand; he grew up alongside people who valued character over politics, and formed lifelong friendships with people who disagreed with him on issues that might raise some people's hackles. He attended his first day of kindergarten on Four Georgians Elementary School's first day of operation, and found community in the halls of public schools and community theaters that gifted him with an education of which he is deeply proud. These experiences shaped Kevin into the man he is, but they are not unique to him — most Montanans will recognize these stories, and have their own versions to share. In Kevin, Montanans will find a candidate able to stand in a kind of solidarity shared only by those who know the value of hard work done on their own, without a trust fund to fall back on. So while he may not have unlimited funds with which to pay for billboards advertising his name or lobbyists on speed dial ready to pull strings on his behalf, Kevin does have something that matters more: a lifetime of solidarity with working Montanans, and decades of experience advocating for all of them in every way that he possibly can. About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. French President Emmanuel Macron said that French army general Jean-Louis Georgelin's death meant “the nation lost one of its great soldiers” and “one of its great servants,” while Notre-Dame had lost “the architect of its rebirth.” Macron had appointed Georgelin to the role shortly after the fire, in April 2019. Georgelin in 2021 was confident that the restoration would be able to meet Macron's proposed five-year working schedule. “The deadlines will be met!” he said that year during a media interview. The cathedral is scheduled to be reopened in 2024. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/255142/jean-louis-georgelin-architect-of-notre-dame-s-rebirth-dies-during-hiking-trip Albany Bishop Emeritus Howard Hubbard, who confessed to covering up clergy abuse, was accused of committing sexual abuse himself, and announced this month that he entered into a civil marriage with a woman, has died from a stroke at the age of 84, according to his publicist. Hubbard made headlines last year after he announced that he asked the Vatican if he could return to the lay state, claiming he is not able to function publicly as a priest while under investigation for sexual abuse. Following Hubbard's announcement of his civil marriage, Albany Bishop Edward Scharfenberger said Hubbard remained a bishop and that his “marriage” was invalid. Warfel, who will turn 75 on September 16, will be automatically succeeded by his coadjutor, 57-year-old Bishop Jeffrey Fleming, who was appointed last year. In an April 2022 statement, Warfel said that the year prior he had asked Pope Francis to appoint a coadjutor bishop “to help me in the administration of our diocese and to begin a transition for the eventual new ordinary.” Warfel, who lived for over 25 years in Alaska and has spent the last 15 years in Montana, is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hiking and backpacking. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Vietnam for 18 months and in Korea for 13 months before being honorably discharged in 1971. Fleming, who now succeeds Warfel as bishop, was born in Billings, Montana, in 1966. He studied religious education and theology at Carroll College in Helena and completed his priestly studies at Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon, where he also received a master's degree in theology. Pope Pius XII in the Papal Encyclical Ad Coeli Reginam proposed the traditional doctrine on the Queenship of Mary and established this feast for the Universal Church. Pope Pius IX said of Mary's queenship: "Turning her maternal Heart toward us and dealing with the affair of our salvation, she is concerned with the whole human race. Constituted by the Lord Queen of Heaven and earth, and exalted above all choirs of Angels and the ranks of Saints in Heaven, standing at the right hand of Her only-begotten Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, she petitions most powerfully with Her maternal prayers, and she obtains what she seeks." https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/queenship-of-mary-343

For every young American under the age of 18, there are about two cats or dogs receiving free food and lodgings in US homes and that pattern is replicated in many other countries. So why do so many of us keep pets? Why do we name them, consider them part of the family? Companionship, pleasure, status symbol and kinship with all life have been offered as explanations but it's easy to forget that mass keeping of pets - as opposed to working animals - is a recent development of the last two centuries or so. (Riverton, WY) - Mark Lenhardt is poised to take over the Riverton High School football program this year. The Wolverines are seeking their first winning season since 2015, and their first playoff appearance since 2020. Background At just 41-years-old, Lenhardt has an extensive background coaching at both Torrington High School and Rock Springs High School. In 2021, he led RSHS to a championship game appearance, where ultimately they fell short to Sheridan. Lenhardt played college football at Mesa State from 2000-2002. After his playing time, he took on a student assistant job at Mesa, helping them become the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions. Lenhardt spent more time in the college ranks, helping coach certain positions at Carroll College. Carroll went to national championships in 04, 05, and 07. "Where I learned how to run a football program came from there," Lenhardt said. "I was fortunate to be apart of three national championships and four conference championships at the NAIA." After his time at Carroll, Mark would head to North Dakota at the University of Mary. He would spend two seasons with the program before moving closer to his Wyoming home. Mark entered the the high school coaching ranks in 2011 becoming an assistant coach for the Torrington Trailblazers. Mark helped lead the team to six playoff appearances for eight seasons, including runners-up in two straight seasons in 2018 and 2019. "The program was struggling to get wins and in the last five seasons, we would go 41-10," Lenhardt said. "We were pretty proud of what we accomplished in Torrington!" The New Chapter Following his time in Torrington, Lenhardt would move to Rock Springs for four seasons and now comes to Riverton. Lenhardt moved to Riverton as a way to get close to family but in addition, Mark has always enjoyed the area. "From my time I was in Torrington and play Riverton, I have always truffley marveled that I saw as the athletes that live here. Every time we played them it kept me up at night," Lenhardt reflect when playing against Riverton. He likes how the community is itching for more athletic success. "I like what Baeu Sheets has done with the basketball team, and the community seems to be hungry for success." Lenhardt added that "a strong central administration is vital. When you get the support you need, and you feel a community wants to have success and build a perfect storm. I wanted to make sure those pieces were in place that I saw." Lenhardt added on why he choose the Wolverines. Football Mark is excited to get the program going. This summer he has the team scheduled for camps including the Black Hills State football camp in South Dakota later in the summer. Lenhart will also be doing summer workouts including weight lifting. "Lifting will be a 365-a-day year job, we are lucking to have Ross Anderson and a great administration who had provided those weight lifting programs!" In addition this first year Mark is going to be active in both the offense and defense. "This first year here, I'm going to be heavily involved with the defense even though that is not ideal," Lenhard said about how he will approach his first year calling for the cardinal red and black. "I want the staff to be on the same page and I want to train a defensive coordinator. For the varsity games, I want the guys to be next to me and use it as an on-the-job training opportunity to learn." Lenhart adds that this is a fresh start for everybody and wants to use this first year as a way to see where everyone clicks and what the best roles are for everyone. You can listen to the full interview here! The football season will start in August with County 10 having coverage of Wolverine football!

With a fertility expert and a pelvic floor expert in the same family, one can only imagine the discussions over the dinner table at family reunions…. But fortunately, in this episode, Ruby, Anne, and guest Dr. Abby Dunning are letting us have a little listen-in. And please do listen in, because this is a VERY important conversation for anyone with a pelvic floor. (Hint: that's ALL of us – even those who weren't born with a uterus.) Dr. Abby Dunning is a Doctor of Physical Therapy from Ruby's own home state of Montana. She received her bachelor's degree at Carroll College and her doctorate degree at the University of Montana. She specializes in treating pelvic pain conditions, pelvic organ prolapse, bowel and bladder dysfunction, orthopedic conditions of the pelvis, hip, and spine; as well as specific concerns unique to pregnant and/or postpartum individuals and the pediatric population.  The pelvic floor supports a whole lot of important organs and functions, and yet most of us really need to learn how to keep this part of the body strong and healthy. Of course pregnancy involves the pelvic floor, but it's also critical to waste retention and release, orgasm, core strength, posture, breathing, and more, so it's pretty important to know how to exercise it and treat it well. As with all complicated things, there are ways things can go pretty wrong: pelvic pain, incontinence, prolapse. That pain may be associated with penetrative intercourse, but it can also occur at other times or just exist as a lingering, consistent discomfort. And for many people, having pelvic exams is uncomfortable enough for so many reasons, including past physical or emotional trauma, so the idea of seeing a physical therapist for treatment seems impossible. Which is why it's important to find a PT you connect with and trust. Many people believe that pelvic floor issues are limited to people who have had multiple pregnancies, but that's just not true. Everyone can benefit from being in tune with that part of their body and checking with a PT for the right way to keep the pelvic floor healthy (hint: not just Kegels, and NOT CRUNCHES). Find out more about Dr. Dunning at Lone Peak Physical Therapy lonepeakpt.com - Dr. Abby Dunning and about our own Anne and Ruby at thewholepineapple.com.
