Ein Laubkompost liefert innerhalb von 6 Monaten feine Walderde für die Setzlingsanzucht oder zur Bodenverbesserung. Das Laub auf dem Blumenrasen und kiesig-mageren Wiesenstellen wird weggerecht, damit die Blattrosetten der Blütenpflanzen genügend Licht erhalten. Das gesammelte Laub wird in Hecken und unter Sträucher gestreut. Trockene Nischen z.B. unter Nadelgehölzen, unter dem Gartenhaus oder an der Ostseite des Hauses eignen sich als Winterquartiere für Igel. Deshalb wird dort trockenes Laub aufgeschüttet.  * Laub von Kern- und Steinobst, Haselnuss, Linde, Weide, Ahorn, Vogelbeere, Erle und Esche wird ganz verwendet. * Laub von Buche, Birke, Eiche, Walnuss, Edelkastanie, Pappel und Platane wird gehäckselt oder flächig ausgebreitet und mit dem Rasenmäher zerkleinert. * * Pro ½ m3 Laub wird 5kg Hornspäne oder Schafwollpellets und 2.5 kg Algenkalk untergemischt. Der Laubkompost wird als Walm aufgeschüttet und mit einem Kompostvlies abgedeckt.

Nach den ersten Frösten ist der richtige Zeitpunkt gekommen um Rosenstämme, Kletterrosen und Strauchrosen einzuwintern.  Nach einigen Frostnächten stellt die Rose ihr Wachstum ein und geht in Winterruhe. Vorher sollten folgende Arbeiten gemacht werden: * Mit einer Ausnahme werden alle veredelten Rosen um ein Drittel mit der Gartenschere eingekürzt. So brechen sie bei Schneelast oder heftigen Stürmen nicht auseinander. * Das am Boden liegende Laub wird mit einem Hand-Laubrechen entfernt, denn darauf hat sich der Sternrusstau-Pilz eingenistet. Er überwintert sonst auf den Blättern und steckt im nächsten Frühling die jungen Blätter an. * Alle Rosen werden angehäufelt: ihre am Wurzelhals liegende Veredlungsstelle wird mit 10 cm Erde überdeckt. Es darf auch Rosenerde oder Universalerde sein. * Bei den Rosenbäumchen wird die Veredlungsstelle in der Krone mit Holzwolle umwickelt und dann die ganze Krone mit einem hellen Wintervlies eingepackt.
