This weekend is the 30th year of Art-a-Whirl, a free arts festival in northeast Minneapolis. The neighborhood has long been a hub for artists and creatives. Throughout the event it transforms as artists open their studio doors and northeast businesses host local music and food trucks. Organizers say it is the largest open artist studio tour in the country. Anna Becker is executive director of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association, which organizes Art-a-Whirl. MPR News host Nina Moini talked with her along with Kari Maxwell, a painter and one of this year's 30 featured artists.

As practicing Catholics, we see the fingerprints of God in our lives wherever we encounter the true, the good, and the beautiful. A local parish is giving you the opportunity to trip-the-light-transcendent, as well as give local artists a chance to showcase their talents and gifts! St. Clement's in NE Minneapolis is playing one of the hosts for this year's Art-a-Whirl. Joining us to tell us more are Christopher Santer, who is both an artist and an art teacher at Providence Academy; and Ann Marie Cosgrove, an artist-photographer and Art-a-Whirl contributor.

Kate Lawson, a former arts administrator and current arts enthusiast living in Minneapolis, is excited for Art-A-Whirl, the sprawling northeast Minneapolis open studio art tour that begins Friday. In particular, she wants to point people to Hossle Woodworks. Founder Justin Hossle creates mid-century modern furniture and home decor. “The clean lines and natural finishes of his pieces really let the beauty of the woods stand out,” she said. “And it's a really fun experience to get to see how the pieces are put together in his workshop.” Hossle Woodworks will offer demonstrations and classes throughout the weekend. Sarah McGrill is an art consultant and educator in Minneapolis. She is a fan of visual artist Tammy Ortegon, who she says “has been a force in south Minneapolis, as she's owned her own gallery for 20 years and realized that she had never had a solo exhibition.” To remedy this, Ortegon is offering a retrospective of her work in her own space, called the ColorWheel Gallery. The exhibit is called “30years Reflect Back/30years Inspired Forward,” and, according to McGrill, “it's just an experience to walk in and see the inspiration that she has in her shop to support local and regional artists.” The exhibit begins Saturday. Shannon Twohy is a curator and fiber artist from Minneapolis. She recommends “Living on the Edge,” presented by the North Shore Artists League. “As an artist myself, I think events that are pro-artists are so important,” she says. “I also love that the artwork and the exhibition are featuring the beauty of the North Shore.” The exhibition runs Friday through July 9 at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wis.

Episode 16 – A Conversation with Margo Ashmore When it comes to NE Minneapolis, perhaps no one has played a role in so many varying aspects in making this fine neighborhood what it is, than today's guest. Margo Ashmore is many things and has, like I said, played many roles, from being the coordinator of the nations largest open air studio tour, Art A Whirl, back in its early days, to being the coordinator of the Minneapolis/St Paul Home tour since 2005, sitting on the boards of the NE Minneapolis Arts District, the NE Community Development Corporation and Art To Change the World. Somewhere she also finds time for her own art, wether it be photography, writing, story telling and even taking the stage for stand up comedy. Most notably, Margo has been the owner and publisher of the Northeaster Newspaper since 1981. While the paper covers all things news related in NE and immediate vicinity, more importantly, it keeps a spotlight on all things arts related being generated in our fair neighborhood. And theres a lot of arts going on here. I hope you enjoy and Cheers! Be sure to check us out online at www.roguebuddha.com
With so much on hold because of COVID-19, the arts community in Minnesota is struggling. Theaters are canceling and rescheduling their seasons, musicians are turning to social media to put on virtual concerts and visual artists are losing income because of canceled art fairs. The pandemic has created short-term and long-term uncertainty for artists and arts organizations, but it has also spurred creativity about ways to make and share art. For example, Art-A-Whirl, an annual art festival in northeast Minneapolis, opens virtually on Friday. Members of Minnesota's arts community join MPR News host Angela Davis to talk about their new realities and what the future might hold. Guests: Laura Zabel is the executive director of Springboard for the Arts, an economic and community development organization for Minnesota’s artists. Leah Cooper is the co-artistic director of Wonderlust Productions, a theater company based in St. Paul. Shantel Dow is the executive director of the Reif Performing Arts Center in Grand Rapids, Minn. Use the audio player above to listen to the program. Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or RSS.

A dollar for every pint sold goes toward a different charity no matter what kind of beer you get! Stephanie & Kelsey also told us about new one-off beers they'll be canning monthly and how excited they are for Art-A-Whirl! *Bonus* An extra long outtake at the end with some tips on how to get your dog or cat to photograph well for Instagram!

Today I'll be speaking about my own neck of the woods, which is Northeast Minneapolis. There is a lot to do around here, whether you like sports, music, art, or just a cold beer. This area boasts a strong arts district which hosts something called Art-A-Whirl every year that brings in a lot of local artists and musicians. You can learn more about this festival here.Northeast Minneapolis is sometimes referred to as Nordeast, and a lot has changed in the last 10 years. However, a lot of old institutions are still here like Jax Cafe, Stanley's, and Elsie's Bowling Alley. There is also a fairly new place called The Anchor, which serves fish and chips and is one of the highest-rated restaurants in the area. Betty Danger's Country Club has a Ferris Wheel attached to their restaurant, so this is a perfect destination for your family. You can even dine in one of the cars on the Ferris Wheel! One of the major reasons that the Nordeast is prized is because we have very good schools in this part of the city. Waite Park Elementary School has been ranked extremely high, as well as Northeast Middle School, and then there is Edison High School. If you're thinking of buying a home in Northeast Minneapolis, I recommend you come out and take a look. It's a very relaxed, family-friendly area. Please don't hesitate to ask me about this part of Minneapolis because I would love to talk to you about it!
