In honor of National Cancer Survivor Month, guest host Christina Monaco, LMSW, sits down with young adult survivor Neema Philippe for an unflinching conversation about being diagnosed with cancer at age 29—and what comes next. Neema revisits the shock of her diagnosis, the whirlwind of treatments, and the grief of watching life plans shift overnight. She shares how vulnerability became a healing tool, why self-advocacy matters at every stage, and the small rituals that help her reclaim joy. Whether you're a survivor, caregiver, or clinician, Neema's reflections on self-care, community, and life “after” will leave you inspired—and better equipped to navigate your own path beyond cancer. Key takeaways: A cancer diagnosis at any age can be shocking and life-altering. The words “you have cancer” often bring intense emotional overwhelm. Life stage can deeply shape how someone experiences cancer, especially when it disrupts expectations or milestones. Medical decisions—like fertility preservation—carry emotional complexity and long-term considerations. Support systems play a vital role in coping with the isolation that can come with a cancer diagnosis. Embracing vulnerability can foster healing and a deeper connection. It's common to grieve the loss of imagined futures while navigating illness. Fear of recurrence can linger long after treatment ends. Finding moments of joy and meaning can help support emotional well-being during and after cancer treatment. Self-advocacy is essential when navigating the healthcare system and making informed decisions.

In recent years, the relationship between Chinese mining companies and local communities in many African countries has been very contentious over allegations of environmental damage, a lack of transparency, and tensions with local civil society groups. In Zimbabwe, a new initiative—the China-Africa Dialogue on Green Minerals for Responsible Investment (CADRI)—is taking a different approach. Rather than relying on confrontation, CADRI brings together civil society organizations, policymakers, and Chinese companies to push for greater accountability, transparency, and sustainable mining practices. This week, CGSP Africa Editor Géraud Neema speaks with Obert Bore, business and human rights program lead at the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (ZELA), to discuss why this initiative appears to be working and what other African countries can learn from Zimbabwe's experience. There's a new production in Toronto that explores the very first musical instrument: the voice. “The Wolf in the Voice” features three singers, including the acclaimed Canadian soprano, dancer and performer Neema Bickersteth. She joins Tom Power to talk about the show, how it investigates the relationship between singing and the human voice, and the joy — and deep anxieties — faced by professional singers.
Neema doesn't want to help out at home, she just wants to rollerblade. Who can blame her, chores are boring, right? Things come to a head with her dad. He thinks helping out is exactly what she should be doing. Thankfully Shelly is on hand to assist Neema, as she works through this contentious family issue. Utilizing songs and chat, Shelly tries to show Neema that helping out matters. Why is it important that everyone works as a team in a family? Are there lessons to be learnt from doing basic household tasks? How can ‘helping out' make you feel? Listen to find out. Highlights include – harried and harassed worker bees, a pair of antipodean-former-clubbing-twin-owls, a catchy tune extolling the virtues of teamwork. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee this week on what the U.S. needs to do to better compete with China in Africa and other developing regions. Campbell bluntly told senators Washington "has to do better" to match Chinese finance, trade, and military engagement around the world. But the problem for Campbell and other U.S. stakeholders is that it's been difficult to define what success looks like in their bid to out-compete China. Jendayi Frazer, a distinguished visiting fellow at Hoover Institution and adjunct senior fellow for Africa studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, is one of Washington's foremost experts on U.S. foreign policy towards Africa. She speaks from firsthand experience as a former assistant secretary of state and joins CGSP Africa Editor Géraud Neema to explain why it's critical for the U.S. to devote more attention to Africa. Back in the early 2000s, when Chinese engagement in Africa started to ramp up, China was enjoying double-digit growth and devoured vast quantities of African oil, minerals, and timber to feed its surging manufacturing sector. Fast-forward to the present, and China no longer relies on African resources as it once did. The Chinese economy has matured, and those heady growth days are long past. And now, with the BRI in place, China doesn't rely on Africa for resources anywhere near as much as it did 20 years ago. A new paper published by two of the world's leading scholars on China-Africa ties, Zainab Usman from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Professor Tang Xiaoyang from Tsinghua University in Beijing, details five key economic trends re-shaping the relationship between these two regions. Zainab joins CGSP Africa Editor Géraud Neema to discuss how this evolving economic relationship will impact African countries, in particular.
