In 1937, Kansas native and pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart sought to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate the world. It was a daring adventure but one that ended in tragedy. Almost 9 decades later, a company named Deep Sea Vision produced evidence of a plane closely resembling Amelia's at the bottom of the Pacific. Recovery attempts are ongoing and offer the potential for resolution to the enduring mystery of how and where Amelia's journey came to an end. However, this apparent discovery while exciting is just the latest in a series of theories – backed by photographs or eye witness reports that suggest she died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, crashed in Papua New Guinea, or that she starved to death on a tiny remote island. We may or may not ever now how her adventure ended but we do know how it began. And it was right here in Atchison Kansas. In this episode I uncover the equally intriguing story of Amelia's early life as I speak with Heather Roesch Executive Director and Madison Paul Director of Archives at the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum. This week, in Atchison, Kansas, Relationships intertwine like ropes, among three local people. Not only are their relationships like ropes, but ropes play a big part in these relationships. It seems that everyone in this town is into bondage, and can't wait to tell friends/family/co-workers about it. The problem comes when one of these folks is found, covered in leaves, and mud, with an intricate system of ropes, from feet, to wrists, to neck. Was it a callous act of violence, or a very horny accident??Along the way, we find out that you can be President of the United States for just a day, that bondage makes a great conversation starter, and that once you try to hide a dead body, it's hard to say the whole thing was an accident!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! We definitely accuse (probably falsely) someone of murder while Joyce talks about the many wives of William Haymond and how many of them are still hanging around at the super scary Haymond House in Sutton West Virginia. Also, Joyce is definitely going to be a paranormal investigator. Then we ask the age old question of "Can demons be cherubic?" while Nikki retells the story of the Sallie House in Atchison Kansas. Division Street ran through Atchison, Kansas. It divided the community along racial lines until a local advocacy group, Atchison United, lobbied to change it. But some Catholics in the city resisted the effort. Kevin Hill, an attorney and member of Atchison United, speaks with Gloria about how racism has become politicized in the United States, including in small cities like Atchison with sizable Catholic populations. Kevin and Gloria recount the story of George Johnson, a Black man from Atchison who was lynched by a white mob in 1870, and make the case that racism is a fundamental life issue for Catholics. This week look into one of the most famous & historic Killers ever known and a haunted house found in Kansas that is sure to give you nightmares. Get ready for Scary Mysteries, Twisted Two’s #1 Jack the Ripper Nearly every person in the world is familiar with the name Jack the Ripper. While no one knows who this crazed individuals real name was, the moniker was given to a serial killer who terrorized the streets of London begginging in 1888. London during that time was very different. Prostitution and brothels were on almost every street and only deemed illegal if they interfered with the general public. There was so much violence, racism, crime and immorality there that much of the public refered to it as a "den of immorality." It was here that Jack the Ripper chose to kill and murder 5 women who’s bodies were found between August 31st and November 9th of 1888. #2 The Sallie House Built in Atchison Kansas in1867, the Sallie House was once owned by a man named Michael Finney. He moved in with his wife, two sons and daughter and up until 1947, the property and the land were owned by the family and its descendants. After that for the next few decades it was rented to various people who never seemed to stay long and there’s no solid records of who they were. Then up Until the 90s, a lady named Ethel Anderson lived there before Tony and Debra Pickman moved in to call it their own. And this is when the trouble began. As soon as the Pickmans moved, they began experiencing unusual occurences. Tony especially began by hearing unexplained voices, and shortly after that would claim to have been attacked and scratched buy some unseen entity.

“Hopefully I can motivate kids to go out and try new things. Here I am at sixty-three, in a single engine aircraft, flying around the world. You can go out and do something amazing, too.” -Brian Lloyd Brian Lloyd is the first solo aviator to complete the historic Earhart equatorial route. Spirit has endured fierce winds, blasting sandstorms, and severe tropical weather along the equator. It has not been an easy flight, due to the long flight hours and complex logistics. On July 14th, Spirit’s engine failed momentarily at 21,000 feet over the Pacific ocean, forcing Brian Lloyd to land in New Zealand for repairs. Everywhere he went, he invited ground crew and friends to sign the airplane with a marker pen. It became a mission of outreach and goodwill. The plane’s fuselage and wings are now covered in signatures that bear witness to the huge network of support that it takes to fly around the world. At the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum in Atchison Kansas, Lloyd was awarded the medal from the Ninety-Nines, the famous international organization of women pilots founded in 1929, of which Amelia Earhart was its first president. Several world records were set by Brian Lloyd and Spirit on this flight: First solo flight of the Historic Earhart Equatorial Route and first male pilot to fly the Historic Earhart Equatorial Route in a propeller aircraft. Tonight on this special 50th episode of the Chasing Earhart podcast, Brian joins us via Zoom to break down and discuss his historic world flight, Project Amelia and why Amelia Earhart continues to have a lasting impact on aviation, and aviators all over the world.
