Cynthia and Daniel discuss the toxically fluffy endorphins of the 2021 romantic comedy The Hating Game, starring Lucy Hale and Austin Stowell. Is writing Smurfs fan fiction quirky or disturbing? Should you decorate your home based on your crush? Is risking norovirus the ultimate romance, and is a bedroom chess nook the ultimate flex? And most importantly: does this movie give endorphins? This is another special bonus, or "lost" episode of The Endorphin Report - we will post new ones every once in a while when inspiration strikes! Cover art by Paul Saunders, theme song written and performed by by Ali Lipman. Support LRR: http://Patreon.com/loadingreadyrun Romantic movies give us endorphins - even when they suck. Each episode, Cynthia and Daniel (Fight the Future with Dan and Paul) talk about a romantic comedy or romantic drama, digging into both the plot and the romance, and answering questions like: What happens the day after the end of the movie? Which romantic gestures are endearing (ooo!) and which are just creepy (eww!)? Will the couple make it? And does this movie, regardless of quality, deliver the happy-making endorphins we could all use right now? Popular romance Bookstagrammer @ReadinRomance makes her authorial debut with NOT IN MY BOOK (Alcove Press). This hotly anticipated romance is The Hating Game meets Beach Read.  In this sexy and hilarious enemies-to-lovers writers' romance, Rosie, an idealistic and passionate Peruvian American, leaves her Tennessee hometown to pursue her dream of making it in New York as a writer. But her plan is derailed when she ends up in class with her archnemesis and ex-crush, Aiden Huntington—an obnoxious, surly, and gorgeous literary fiction writer who doesn't have much patience for the romance genre or for Rosie.  Rosie and Aiden regularly go to verbal battle in workshop until their professor reaches her breaking point. She allows them to stay in her class on one condition: they must cowrite a novel that blends their genres. The reluctant writing duo can't help but put pieces of themselves into their accidentally steamy novel, and their manuscriptin-progress provides an outlet for them to confess their feelings—and explore their attraction toward each other.  When Rosie and Aiden find themselves competing against each other for a potentially career-changing opportunity, the flames of old rivalry reignite, and their once-in-a-lifetime love story is once again at risk of being shelved—unless they can find a way to end the book on their own terms.  This book is especially suited for readers who will enjoy the banter of two rival writers, slow-burn chemistry, Taylor Swift, and lots of bookish culture all rolled into one epic love story ABOUT THE AUTHOR Katie Holt is a New York City resident but a Tennessee native. She studied English with a concentration in creative writing at NYU and fought with every professor to prove that romance novels were worthy of their time. She's a Nora Ephron fanatic, Swiftie, and warm chocolate chip enthusiast. Not in My Book is her first novel.

Ever wondered how "The Hating Game" fares in a classroom setting? Dr. Diana Filar is back to discuss her experiences teaching The Hating Game book and film in a class about popular genre fiction. We discuss the challenges of translating romance novels into films, how stereotypes of genres are formed and challenged, and what it's like introducing non-genre readers to romance. Learn about Dr. Filar's approach to incorporating popular genre fiction like romance, horror, and suspense into her curriculum, how class conversations resembled a Battle of the Sexes as they explored texts that engaged with gender in different ways, and why it's so hard to both adapt romance and teach romance novels as a genre in the classroom.Class texts also included Gone Girl, Arrival, and The Exorcist. Guest: Dr. Diana FilarWebsite | TwitterListen to Dr. Diana Filar on the #1 most-downloaded episode of Shelf Love: 092. In our second episode, we take a hard look at the quintessential romance hero: Fitzwilliam Darcy and how his character has crafted so many that came after him in what Ines (not Leslye!) likes to call the Darcy Arc. Ines postulates that the Darcy Arc can be found in the evolution of characters like Edward Cullen from Twilight and Christian Grey from Fifty Shades of Grey. These characters begin as misunderstood and emotionally distant figures who eventually reveal a deeper capacity for love and kindness. This transformation, triggered by their relationships with strong-willed heroines, sees them shift from aloofness to passionate commitment. The discussion highlights common elements across these stories, such as the challenges of wealth and status, the heroes' moral complexities, and their ultimate transformation through love, which captivates readers and makes these stories enduringly appealing.   Read Pride and Prejudice Want to watch it? Summary: Hop on board, buckle up, and stow your luggage, folks - we're in transit today! Whether by plane, train or automobile, travel can open up a lot of possibilities for characters across genres. Holly and Devin talk through the “closed door” atmosphere transit can bring to a story, and how physical travel can augment the metaphorical evolution of character arcs with a more unique twist.  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (9:10): Holly discussed Bullet Train by Kotaro Isaka, a novel that follows the perilous train ride of five highly motivated assassins, the principal of which is Nanao, aka Ladybug. Boarding a bullet train from Tokyo to Morioka, Ladybug is given one simple task - grab a suitcase and get off at the next step. Things quickly devolve as he is met with competition, challenge, and various murder attempts. Holly's key takeaways were: This novel takes the time to take us inside characters to understand the shame, motivations, and quirks of a grisly set of over-the-top assassins. The depth Isaka achieves adds to the satirical tone while also increasing reader investment in the outcome of the wild train ride.  While rife with murder, Bullet Train is also full of humor. Nanao keeps trying and failing to get off at the next stop, people get killed and characters have to prop them up to seem like they're still alive, and accidents lead to additional problems throughout the novel. The 2022 Brad Pitt film version changed a lot of the characters' racial and gender identities, but overall it captured the spirit, plot, and humor of the original story well.  The Heart (24:50): Devin discussed The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren, a novel of mishaps and undesired outcomes that leads to a destiny no one ever imagined. Olive Torres has always seen herself as unlucky, and having to survive her sister's wedding next to her arch nemesis (and the brother of the groom) Ethan is just one more bit of evidence that she's right. When all the guests (and the happy couple) get food poisoning except for Olive and Ethan, they agree to go on the honeymoon so as not to waste the trip. Devin's key takeaways were:  Olive and Ethan's mutual animosity was born from a misunderstanding and simple miscommunication. By traveling to Hawaii together and escaping their typical routines, they're both afforded space and a different perspective to begin to reconcile their differences.  A combination of The Hating Game and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, this novel is full of hijinks, forced proximity, and miscommunication that ultimately allows both protagonists to reframe and transform their perception of reality. All it took was bad buffet food and a faux honeymoon to Hawaii.  Trigger Warning: there are consistent references to body, physical beauty, and allusions to body dysmorphia that any reader, and especially those with a history or sensitivity to eating disorders, should be aware of.  Hot On the Shelf (42:24): Holly: Three Assassins by Kotaro Isaka Devin: River of Consciousness by Oliver Sacks  What's Making Our Hearts Race (45:27): Holly: The Last of Us on HBO Devin: Heavenly Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe, CA   Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

The cinematic world of love and laughter had rom-com enthusiast Madison head over heels from the time Harry met Sally. For genre skeptic Chelsea, however, it's been a grueling enemies-to-lovers plot. Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real talk! We are joined this week by Christine Riccio and Natasha Polis from Those Forking Fangirls to discuss the significant uptick in interest (and sales) of literary romance and YA novels. Today's conversation was inspired by this NPR article:From meet-cutes to happy endings, romance readers feel the love as sales heat up.  Christine and Natasha help us dig in on the pipeline from Young Adult to Romance, how the genres somewhat overlap, and how the culture has shifted to make open enjoyment of the Romance genre more socially accepted. Might some of the shifts in cover art portrayals have made the genre more comfortable and accessible to readers? Are there any cases where the cute, cartoony covers fail to communicate the spicy, smutty passages between the covers? Fan Fiction seems to have played a major role in these developments, with more people participating in online fan spaces to create new content. There are even recent examples of very successful fan fic authors going on to become published, like Christina Lauren, EL James, Alice Clayton, and Ali Hazelwood. Is there any direct correlation between the rise in interest for romance novels as a genre and the uptick in romance-based reality TV shows? What sort of escapism do they provide? What recommendations do Christine and Natasha have for current romance readers, or those hoping to get started? "From Blood and Ash" by Jennifer L Aremntrout, "Spoiler Alert" by Olivia Dade, "A Court of Silver Flames" by Sarah J Maas, "Part of Your World" by Abby Jimenez, "Verity" by Colleen Hoover, "Anna & the French Kiss" by Stephanie Perkins, "The Soulmate Equation" by Christina Lauren, "The Hating Game" by Sally Thorne, "A Court of Thorns and Roses" by Sarah J. Maas. And of COURSE - "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer.  This week's recommendations are all over the map: Andrew's shameless plug to use his Visible by Verizon referral code to get $20 off your first month, "Sons of the Forest" (Laura), 'Daisy Jones & The Six' on Prime Video (Pam), "Ninth House" (Christine), and "Sanditon" on Masterpiece airing 3/19/23 (Natasha). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon: Last week we revealed all the bad things we did as kids and teens, but this week we're revealing the much more scandalous escapades our parents thought we were into. Weed orgies, illicit drug use on a church playground, underage sex, and all sorts of really interesting things none of us were actually cool enough to be doing.

Summary: Holly and Devin dove into a super fun theme this week - workplace drama. Rarely in the podcast have they discussed a theme that pans out so differently in romances vs. thrillers, and the books they brought highlighted those differences well. Holly was pleasantly surprised by her book, as she is often left feeling like workplace dramas drag. Workplace romances are a common trope in the books Devin reads, and the inherent taboo of coworkers falling in love creates a tension she always enjoys.  Topics Discussed: The Heart (1:43): Devin discussed The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. The book follows two executive assistants - Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman - who hate each other loudly, aggressively, and passionately. When a Managing Director role opens up at the recently merged Bexley & Gamin publishing house, their animosity is taken to the next level - and becomes mixed with another kind of passion. Her key takeaways were: The tension and banter in this novel are next-level, with great dialogue and intriguing evolution of Lucy and Joshua's dynamic. The make-out session in the elevator is one of her favorite elevator moments of all time. The story is told from Lucy's POV, which keeps Joshua's feelings and intensions in the dark and maintains the “will they, won't they” dynamic until the climactic end - sometimes to the point where you question Lucy's empathy and perspective on Joshua, however.  This book is great for someone looking for a light romantic read. The character's lives don't extend much beyond work, with almost all of the scenes taking place in the office until the 3rd act.  The Dagger (19:34): Holly discussed All Her Little Secrets by Wanda M. Morris. The book starts off with a bang, as protagonist Ellice Littlejohn finds her boss dead in his office - the boss with whom she's been having an affair. From there, Ellice is caught up in a world of police investigations, corporate plots and cover-ups, and reckoning with her own past. Holly's key takeaways were: This propulsive corporate thriller has it all - Morris explores racism, white supremacy, childhood trauma, corporate corruption, and more. While Holly sometimes fears workplace thrillers can be dry or dense, Morris executed well in this instance.  Set in Atlanta, the tense sense of office atmosphere keeps the reader moving through the story and reflecting on who we are in the office and our personal lives, and if reinventing ourselves is even possible. Holly recommends this book to anyone who enjoys thrillers that weave more complex themes and social commentary throughout - Ellice is not only combating against a murder investigation, but also climbing the corporate ladder as a Black woman.  Hot On the Shelf (36:16): Devin: The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood Holly: Magic Steeped in Poison by Judy I. TRIGGER WARNING this episode contains topics that may be sensitive to some viewers The girls had a long weekend in, which means many updates, impulse decisions, and movie reviews. Shortstop is sneaking his way back, which leads the girls into a conversation about the Megan Fox and MGK aesthetic. It can come off a little intense. Also, mystery man only has one calf? Riv and Elle are always balling on a budget and decided never to get their nails done again. They chat about this new nail adventure and attempt to justify it by channeling the Kim K natural nails. Moving into the episode, Riv and Elle talk about some movies they recently watched. The two movies in question are After and The Hating Game. Both fall under the category of romance but are quite the opposite. The girls notice little to no communication in the relationships showcased and tons of toxic energy. Maybe there's a better genre for these movies like uhhh thrillers? They close out the episode with a listener question about lo the limo driver but suspect they may have fallen victim to a little prank.
