John welcomes writer, director and playwright Leslye Headland (The Acolyte, Russian Doll) to ask, why are stage plays so challenging for screenwriters? Using her recent Broadway play Cult of Love, they look at different approaches to scene description, heightened and simultaneous dialogue, and strategies for adapting stage plays to film. We also chart Leslye's career from theater kid to auteur filmmaker, her approach to time loops (because how could we not?), and answer listener questions about music cues and long scripts. In our bonus segment for premium members, John and Leslye compare notes on how to keep up with what's on stage, and what to do if you missed a production. Although coming into the story confused because of the blurb, Ines and Leslye dissect this dual love story, of sorts in Resonance Surge. The main love story revolves around a Changeling bear with foresight and a wounded Psy with a past filled with childhood trauma. Woven with real life stories of Psy siblings before silence, as well as tales from the present day consequences of Silence falling, this addition to Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series packs an emotional punch.
In this episode, we explore Nalini Singh's Storm Echo, in which we visit both the amnesia and second chance at love tropes. The story centers on Lei, a Changeling healer with little memory of her past, and Ivan Mercant, a man whose own turbulent past haunts him. As their paths cross, they not only navigate the complexities of their emerging feelings but also piece together the scattered fragments of Lei's memory—and a past that once included Ivan. One of the most sure ways to have "Zero Friends Again" in the Star Wars community is to bring up Rian or Leslye. People are going to have opinions and things are going to get as heated as a scrapper's maw. If you just stopped and listened, you wouldn't have to hit the self-destruct button, although stopping might mean you end up food for Tet'niss.Episode 6 of Skeleton Crew wasn't action packed, but it was packed with character moments for KB and Wim. Fern managed to learn a lesson without even trying and Neel kept it real by trying to keep the "core four" together even if he won't be manager material on his home planet. Speaking of At Attin, the coordinates are burned into KB's occipital link...or is that melted wires? Wim and KB shared a moment, didn't they? Too bad about the crabs. Neel is always worried about his bones, except when he's getting dragged up a cliff on a rope. Good thing Fern knows how to ride a speeder, because how else was she going to pilot a trash drone? Jod might want to take a deep breath next time he goes for a parlay with space pirates. After all, it might be the last air he gets if Brutus has his way. Oh, Lanupa! Two episodes at a spa and all we got was a lousy space shanty. We hope you are enjoying 2025. In this episode, we tackle the "messy middle" of the second act. One of the solutions we offer involves a series of Try Fail cycles, where the protagonist encounters a carefully designed obstacle course that tests their resolve and pushes the plot forward. Ines emphasizes the importance of a structured approach to these cycles, suggesting that each cycle should include a plan, an obstacle, a setback, a scene of growth, and a regrouping phase to maintain narrative momentum and character development. While Leslye insists the best way to get out of the middle is with the "Yes, But" or "No, And" formula. This method ensures that each scene contributes to escalating the stakes—when a character succeeds ('Yes'), there's a complicating factor ('But'), and when they fail ('No'), the situation worsens or changes direction ('And'). This episode is packed with practical advice and approaches to help authors refine their storytelling skills, keep readers engaged through the mid-point of their books, and effectively develop their narratives towards a satisfying climax. Pulitzer Prize-winning and Emmy- and Grammy-nominated composer Michael Abels joins our guest host, music journalist Jon Burlingame, to discuss the music of “Star Wars: The Acolyte.” The music for the series was a massive undertaking, made even more formidable by the knowledge that every cue would be compared to the work of legendary composer John Williams. But as a longtime fan of “Star Wars,” Abels jumped into the project eagerly.“I'm one of those people who saw the original trilogy in the theater, so I've grown up with ‘Star Wars' and with the music of John Williams… I think every fan actually has an assessment of what makes ‘Star Wars' ‘Star Wars.' So Leslye [Headland, creator and showrunner] and I talked about that… And we quickly aligned on that the music of ‘Star Wars,' while it's not necessary that it be old-school or traditional or orchestral, that's something that we both valued. And so it was our intention to have the score be very traditional in places where it called for that and where that would work. And at the same time, there are definite ways in which this series explores new ground. It's all new characters. There's a method to the storytelling that's distinctly Leslye's own. And so in those places, the score does what it needs to do to bring this new element to the story.” —Michael Abels, Composer, “Star Wars: The Acolyte”Be sure to check out “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” now streaming on Disney+.Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. Two sisters on opposite sides of the Force; one terrible trauma that sent them on those divergent paths... This new series, from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland, asks the question: what if there's more to that nobility than we've come to understand? In a spoiler-filled interview, recorded days after the show's finale, Leslye breaks down its major surprises, key scenes and crucial characters – explaining how Fight Club, Frozen and Kill Bill played a significant part in its conception...Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Preaching for Good Friday, Leslye Colvin offers a reflection on resisting systems of power and oppression: "History teaches that those who speak from the margins are targeted to suffer cruelties, and, quite often, to suffer death. Jesus was a man with a target on his back. He was born and lived on the margins of a powerful and oppressive system that placed no value on his life. He resisted the dehumanization of this system by recognizing each person as being made in the image and likeness of his beloved Abba, and he acted accordingly. For him, this was God's law written on his heart, and his life testified to this truth." Leslye Colvin is a writer, spiritual companion, retreat facilitator, and contemplative activist. Inspired by the tradition of Catholic social teaching, she is passionate about encouraging diversity of thought especially as it relates to those often marginalized within the community. Currently in the apprenticeship program of the Guild for Spiritual Guidance, Leslye is a graduate of the Living School and the Haden Institute. She holds an M.A. in Communication from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an undergraduate degree from Xavier University of Louisiana. Leslye serves on the Boards of FutureChurch, and NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice. Visit www.catholicwomenpreach.org/preaching/03292024 to learn more about Leslye, to read her preaching text, and for more preaching from Catholic women.
Today, we discuss the crux of romantic comedies: the deception and the revelation. Ines postulates that there are four types of Romantic Comedy Deceptions: the Merry War, Identity Deception, Bet or Wager Deception, and the Magic Potion Deception. Each of these deceptions creates obstacles for the characters to overcome on their journey to finding true love. The eventual revelation and resolution of these deceptions not only provide satisfying conclusions, but also highlight themes of authenticity, vulnerability, and the transformative power of love. And the humor comes as the characters continually try to conceal the deception.
