Data shows one in five people are neurodivergent. That means it is very likely that a number of your customers fall within that spectrum. As a result, it is important to understand more about this community and ways in which your brand can show them they belong with you. In this episode, I chat with neurodiversity experts Ludmila Praslova, Aviva Legatt, and Caroline Stokes -- who share their expertise as well as their own lived experience on this topic. We are so privileged to have Dr. Aviva Legatt on the podcast today to share some of her invaluable advice! Dr. Legatt is a college admissions expert who has amazing insight on getting into college and the application process. Her book is a must read for any student applying to college! ig: @avivalegatt website: https://ivyinsight.com/ book: https://ivyinsight.com/get-real-and-get-in/
Decades ago, I wrote my college application essays, and then went through the process again—twice in fact—when I applied to two different graduate school programs. While things have changed over the years—the numbers of applicants have exploded thanks to the common app and the internationalization of the applicant pool—one thing has remained the same: the importance of writing well-crafted essays that tell your story in a compelling way, in a way that sets you apart from the thousands of other applicants also vying for a spot at the school of your dreams. To offer some advice on this topic, I sat down recently with Dr. Aviva Legatt. Dr. Legatt is the founder of Ivy Insight Group, where she advises high school and college students on getting into competitive colleges and graduate programs. She's also the author of a brand new book, “Get Real and Get In: How to Get Into the College of Your Dreams by Being Your Authentic Self" (St. Martin's Griffin). In our conversation she explains how the college application process has changed over the years, and she shares some of the frameworks and tips she writes about in her book. To watch the video of our conversation, head over to my new learning community, Write With Impact Academy, and enter your email to sign-up. There you'll find lots more free videos, podcasts, and articles with writing advice.

When a highly selective school receives ten or more times as many applications as available seats, the applicant pool seems like an anonymous, homogenous horde. How can any single student hope to stand out from the crowd? Amy and Mike invited admissions consultant Aviva Legatt to explain how--and why--to build relationships with colleges. What are five things you will learn in this episode? How is building relationships for college different from showing "demonstrated interest"? How should students create a list of college representatives to connect with? What are the nuts and bolts of forming a connection? What are effective strategies for following up and staying in touch? How important is proximity in the relationship-building process? Click for full show notes, exercises, and parenting scripts from this episodeWe've always been told that the secret to getting a teen into college is for them to look perfect on paper. We nag them to join the honors society, sign them up for a hundred SAT tests, or even convince them to quit guitar lessons to make time for academic decathlon. But what if simply checking all the right boxes of what colleges are “looking for” isn't the right approach anymore? Could it be that admissions officers are getting a little bored of reading essay after essay about the challenges of AP biology? We might just be so focused on helping teens fit the mold we aren't encouraging them to think outside of the box! More than just routine extracurriculars or high test scores, admissions officers want to see that kids have unique talents and passions. Instead of pushing kids to drop dance for the debate team, maybe it's time we talked to them about how their natural interests can propel them towards a brighter future. To get a behind-the-scenes peek at what college admissions officers are really looking for, we're talking to Aviva Legatt, author of Get Real and Get In: How to Get Into the College of Your Dreams by Being Your Authentic Self. She's also the founder of Ivy Insight, the gold standard in college admissions consulting! Her advice for your teen? Forget what they've been taught about being the “perfect” college applicant, and be themselves instead!Aviva and I are talking about what she calls the “impressiveness paradox”, or why fancy-shmancy credentials alone might not help your teen get into the school of their dreams. We're also covering how teens can tap into their passions to find their potential, and the value of making connections with people on campus before even submitting their application...Click for full show notes, exercises, and parenting scripts from this episode
